2. Band structure and transport studies on PdAl2Cl8-intercalated graphite

Abstract

The 2D Fermi surface of 1st stage PdAl2Cl8 acceptor-type graphite intercalation compounds (GICs) has been investigated using the Shubnikov-de Haas (SdH) effect. One fundamental frequency is observed, the angular variation of which confirms its strongly 2D nature, as previously found through electrical conductivity measurements. The energy spectrum can be described by the 2D band structure model proposed by Blinowski et al. We obtain the following parameter values: intraplane C-C interaction energy gamma_0 = 2.7 eV, Fermi energy E_F = -1.1 eV and carrier density n_SdH= 1.1x10^27 m^-3. Abstract

Abstract

We present the results of X-ray and magnetic neutron diffraction studies on a single crystal of a first stage CoCl2intercalated graphite which is a 2D XY system in which the Kosterlitz-Thouless theory can be tested. The correlation length of the in-plane ferromagnetism increases as the temperature is lowered and diverges at 4.5 K. The c-axis antiferromagnetic order appears first at 6.5 K, but the mechanism of the 2D ordering is not modified. For this reason the 2D analysis is justified. We have then analysed the magnetic intensities and the correlation lengths as functions of temperature and shown the presence of defects (vortices) which lower the measured magnetization in the ferromagnetic planes as predicted in the 2D XY systems.

Abstract

Abstract: The formation of the vapor complex DyAl3Cl12 by action of gaseous Al2Cl6 on dysprosium chloride has been performed to synthesize a stage-2 DyCl3‐Graphite Intercalation Compound (GIC). EDS experiments prove that no AlCl3 is co-intercalated and 00l X-rays analysis leads to the chemical formula C17.36DyCl3.66. The c-axis repeat distance I C=1314±5pm and the stacking sequence of intercalated DyCl3 along the c-axis corresponds to the layer sandwich Cl–Dy–Cl where the distance between Dy and Cl layers is 149pm. The DyCl3 in-plane structure is oblique with lattice parameters a=1486pm, b=1746pm, γ=66.3°. It presents two different micro-domains disorientated from graphite lattice by θ 1=±9°. Free and intercalated DyCl3 present paramagnetic behaviour following Curie–Weiss law. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract

Abstract: A stage-2 HoCl3-GIC has been synthesized and characterized by XRD experiments and magnetic measurements. EDS and 00l X-ray analyses lead to the chemical formula C23.8HoCl3.7.The c-axis repeat distance is 1313±5pm, and the stacking sequence of intercalated HoCl3 along the c-axis corresponds to the layer sandwich Cl–Ho–Cl, where the distance between Ho and Cl layers is 157pm. The HoCl3 in-plane structure is oblique with lattice parameters a =689pm, b =1177pm, γ =149.6° close to those in the pristine crystal. It presents two different micro-domains disorientated with respect to graphene planes by θ 1 =±19°. Magnetic studies show that Ho3+ ions obey the Curie–Weiss law for both pristine HoCl3 and stage-2 HoCl3-GIC. The presence of graphene planes between HoCl3 intercalated layers leads to an increased Curie–Weiss temperature and to a decrease in the weak antiferromagnetic interactions between Ho3+ ions. 48. New Data Concerning the Graphite-CuAl2Cl8 Compound (Stage 1)

Abstract

The intercalation of CuAl2Cl8 into graphite by action of the gaseous heterocomplex begins with the preintercalation of AlCl3 to form a first stage AlCl3-GIC. Subsequently, the copper dichloride is cointercalated by chemical transport via a gaseous complex in a iso-stage process to give the saturated C22CuAl2Cl8.5 compound. Thermal analyses (TGA and DTA) show a high stability decrease of the intercalated heteromolecule CuAl2Cl8 as compared to that in the free state. Studies of the in-plane structure of the intercalant (Laue technique and electron diffraction on single crystals) indicate an oblique cell with the lattice constants a=2.566nm, b=0.658nm and γ=112°.
