Large Language Models (LLMs) have shown useful applications in a variety of tasks, including data wrangling. In this paper, we investigate the use of an off-the-shelf LLM for schema matching. Our objective is to identify semantic correspondences between elements of two relational schemas using only names and descriptions. Using a newly created benchmark from the health domain, we propose different so-called task scopes. These are methods for prompting the LLM to do schema matching, which vary in the amount of context information contained in the prompt. Using these task scopes we compare LLM-based schema matching against a string similarity baseline, investigating matching quality, verification effort, decisiveness, and complementarity of the approaches. We find that matching quality suffers from a lack of context information, but also from providing too much context information. In general, using newer LLM versions increases decisiveness. We identify task scopes that have acceptable verification effort and succeed in identifying a significant number of true semantic matches. Approximate functional dependencies (AFDs) are functional dependencies (FDs) that "almost" hold in a relation. While various measures have been proposed to quantify the level to which an FD holds approximately, they are difficult to compare and it is unclear which measure is preferable when one needs to discover FDs in real-world data, i.e., data that only approximately satisfies the FD. In response, this paper formally and qualitatively compares AFD measures. We obtain a formal comparison through a novel presentation of measures in terms of Shannon and logical entropy. Qualitatively, we perform a sensitivity analysis w.r.t. structural properties of input relations and quantitatively study the effectiveness of AFD measures for ranking AFDs on real world data. Due to the importance of linear algebra and matrix operations in data analytics, there is significant interest in using relational query optimization and processing techniques for evaluating (sparse) linear algebra programs. In particular, in recent years close connections have been established between linear algebra programs and relational algebra that allow transferring optimization techniques of the latter to the former. In this paper, we ask ourselves which linear algebra programs in MATLANG correspond to the free-connex and q-hierarchical fragments of conjunctive first-order logic. Both fragments have desirable query processing properties: free-connex conjunctive queries support constant-delay enumeration after a linear-time preprocessing phase, and q-hierarchical conjunctive queries further allow constant-time updates. By characterizing the corresponding fragments of MATLANG, we hence identify the fragments of linear algebra programs that one can evaluate with constant-delay enumeration after linear-time preprocessing and with constant-time updates. To derive our results, we improve and generalize previous correspondences between MATLANG and relational algebra evaluated over semiring-annotated relations. Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) are a form of deep learning that enable a wide range of machine learning applications on graph-structured data. The learning of GNNs, however, is known to pose challenges for memory-constrained devices such as GPUs. In this paper, we study exact compression as a way to reduce the memory requirements of learning GNNs on large graphs. In particular, we adopt a formal approach to compression and propose a methodology that transforms GNN learning problems into provably equivalent compressed GNN learning problems. Modern graph database query languages such as GQL, SQL/PGQ, and their academic predecessor G-Core promote paths to first-class citizens in the sense that paths that match regular path queries can be returned to the user. This brings a number of challenges in terms of efficiency, caused by the fact that graphs can have a huge amount of paths between a given node pair. We introduce the concept of path multiset representations (PMRs), which can represent multisets of paths in an exponentially succinct manner. After exploring fundamental problems such as minimization and equivalence testing of PMRs, we explore how their use can lead to significant time and space savings when executing query plans. We show that, from a computational complexity point of view, PMRs seem especially well-suited for representing results of regular path queries and extensions thereof involving counting, random sampling, unions, and joins.

Complex Event Recognition (CER) systems are a prominent technology for finding user-defined query patterns over large data streams in real time. CER query evaluation is known to be computationally challenging, since it requires maintaining a set of partial matches, and this set quickly grows super-linearly in the number of processed events. We present CORE, a novel COmplex event Recognition Engine that focuses on the efficient evaluation of a large class of complex event queries, including time windows as well as the partition-by event correlation operator. This engine uses a novel automaton-based evaluation algorithm that circumvents the super-linear partial match problem: under data complexity, it takes constant time per input event to maintain a data structure that compactly represents the set of partial matches and, once a match is found, the query results may be enumerated from the data structure with output-linear delay. We experimentally compare CORE against state-of-the-art CER systems on real-world data. We show that (1) CORE's performance is stable with respect to both query and time window size, and (2) CORE outperforms the other systems by up to five orders of magnitude on different workloads., Comment: 30 pages, 11 figures

Modern application domains such as Composite Event Recognition (CER) and real-time Analytics require the ability to dynamically refresh query results under high update rates. Traditional approaches to this problem are based either on the materialization of subresults (to avoid their recomputation) or on the recomputation of subresults (to avoid the space overhead of materialization). Both techniques have recently been shown suboptimal: instead of materializing results and subresults, one can maintain a data structure that supports efficient maintenance under updates and can quickly enumerate the full query output, as well as the changes produced under single updates. Unfortunately, these data structures have been developed only for aggregate-join queries composed of equi-joins, limiting their applicability in domains such as CER where temporal joins are commonplace. In this paper, we present a new approach for dynamically evaluating queries with multi-way theta-joins under updates that is effective in avoiding both materialization and recomputation of results, while supporting a wide range of applications. To do this we generalize Dynamic Yannakakis, an algorithm for dynamically processing acyclic equi-join queries. In tandem, and of independent interest, we generalize the notions of acyclicity and free-connexity to arbitrary theta-joins and show how to compute corresponding join trees. We instantiate our framework to the case where theta-joins are only composed of equalities and inequalities and experimentally compare our algorithm to state of the art CER systems as well as incremental view maintenance engines. Our approach performs consistently better than the competitor systems with up to two orders of magnitude improvements in both time and memory consumption.

Many applications from various disciplines are now required to analyze fast evolving big data in real time. Various approaches for incremental processing of queries have been proposed over the years. Traditional approaches rely on updating the results of a query when updates are streamed rather than re-computing these queries, and therefore, higher execution performance is expected. However, they do not perform well for large databases that are updated at high frequencies. Therefore, new algorithms and approaches have been proposed in the literature to address these challenges by, for instance, reducing the complexity of processing updates. Moreover, many of these algorithms are now leveraging distributed streaming platforms such as Spark Streaming and Flink. In this tutorial, we briefly discuss legacy approaches for incremental query processing, and then give an overview of the new challenges introduced due to processing big data streams. We then discuss in detail the recently proposed algorithms that address some of these challenges. We emphasize the characteristics and algorithmic analysis of various proposed approaches and conclude by discussing future research directions.

Regular expressions and automata models with capture variables are core tools in rule-based information extraction. These formalisms, also called regular document spanners, use regular languages in order to locate the data that a user wants to extract from a text document, and then store this data into variables. Since document spanners can easily generate large outputs, it is important to have good evaluation algorithms that can generate the extracted data in a quick succession, and with relatively little precomputation time. Towards this goal, we present a practical evaluation algorithm that allows constant delay enumeration of a spanner's output after a precomputation phase that is linear in the document. While the algorithm assumes that the spanner is specified in a syntactic variant of variable set automata, we also study how it can be applied when the spanner is specified by general variable set automata, regex formulas, or spanner algebras. Finally, we study the related problem of counting the number of outputs of a document spanner, providing a fine grained analysis of the classes of document spanners that support efficient enumeration of their results.

Motivated by the continuing interest in the tree data model, we study the expressive power of downward navigational query languages on trees and chains. Basic navigational queries are built from the identity relation and edge relations using composition and union. We study the effects on relative expressiveness when we add transitive closure, projections, coprojections, intersection, and difference; this for boolean queries and path queries on labeled and unlabeled structures. In all cases, we present the complete Hasse diagram. In particular, we establish, for each query language fragment that we study on trees, whether it is closed under difference and intersection.

Big Data architectures allow to flexibly store and process heterogeneous data, from multiple sources, in their original format. The structure of those data, commonly supplied by means of REST APIs, is continuously evolving. Thus data analysts need to adapt their analytical processes after each API release. This gets more challenging when performing an integrated or historical analysis. To cope with such complexity, in this paper, we present the Big Data Integration ontology, the core construct to govern the data integration process under schema evolution by systematically annotating it with information regarding the schema of the sources. We present a query rewriting algorithm that, using the annotated ontology, converts queries posed over the ontology to queries over the sources. To cope with syntactic evolution in the sources, we present an algorithm that semi-automatically adapts the ontology upon new releases. This guarantees ontology-mediated queries to correctly retrieve data from the most recent schema version as well as correctness in historical queries. Complex Event Recognition (CER for short) refers to the activity of detecting patterns in streams of continuously arriving data. This field has been traditionally approached from a practical point of view, resulting in heterogeneous implementations with fundamentally different capabilities. The main reason behind this is that defining formal semantics for a CER language is not trivial: they usually combine first-order variables for joining and filtering events with regular operators like sequencing and Kleene closure. Moreover, their semantics usually focus only on the detection of complex events, leaving the concept of output mostly unattended. In this paper, we propose to unify the semantics and output of complex event recognition languages by using second order objects. Specifically, we introduce a CER language called Second Order Complex Event Logic (SO-CEL for short), that uses second order variables for managing and outputting sequences of events. This makes the definition of the main CER operators simple, allowing us to develop the first steps in understanding its expressive power. We start by comparing SO-CEL with a version that uses first-order variables called FO-CEL, showing that they are equivalent in expressive power when restricted to unary predicates but, surprisingly, incomparable in general. Nevertheless, we show that if we restrict to sets of binary predicates, then SO-CEL is strictly more expressive than FO-CEL. Then, we introduce a natural computational model called Unary Complex Event Automata (UCEA) that provides a better understanding of SO-CEL. We show that, under unary predicates, SO-CEL captures the subclass of UCEA that satisfy the so-called *-property. Finally, we identify the operations that SO-CEL is lacking to capture UCEA and introduce a natural extension of the language that captures the complete class of UCEA under unary predicates.

While services such as Amazon AWS make computing power abundantly available, adding more computing nodes can incur high costs in, for instance, pay-as-you-go plans while not always significantly improving the net running time (aka wall-clock time) of queries. In this work, we provide algorithms for parallel evaluation of SGF queries in MapReduce that optimize total time, while retaining low net time. Not only can SGF queries specify all semi-join reducers, but also more expressive queries involving disjunction and negation. Since SGF queries can be seen as Boolean combinations of (potentially nested) semi-joins, we introduce a novel multi-semi-join (MSJ) MapReduce operator that enables the evaluation of a set of semi-joins in one job. We use this operator to obtain parallel query plans for SGF queries that outvalue sequential plans w.r.t. net time and provide additional optimizations aimed at minimizing total time without severely affecting net time. Even though the latter optimizations are NP-hard, we present effective greedy algorithms. Inspired by the recent working effort towards a recommendation by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) for tabular data and metadata on the Web, we present in this paper a concept for a schema language for tabular web data called SCULPT. The language consists of rules constraining and defining the structure of regions in the table. These regions are defined through the novel formalism of region selection expressions. We present a formal model for SCULPT and obtain a linear time combined complexity evaluation algorithm. In addition, we consider weak and strong streaming evaluation for SCULPT and present a fragment for each of these streaming variants. Finally, we discuss several extensions of SCULPT including alternative semantics, types, complex content, and explore region selection expressions as a basis for a transformation language., Comment: 16 pages

Motivated by both established and new applications, we study navigational query languages for graphs (binary relations). The simplest language has only the two operators union and composition, together with the identity relation. We make more powerful languages by adding any of the following operators: intersection; set difference; projection; coprojection; converse; and the diversity relation. All these operators map binary relations to binary relations. We compare the expressive power of all resulting languages. We do this not only for general path queries (queries where the result may be any binary relation) but also for boolean or yes/no queries (expressed by the nonemptiness of an expression). For both cases, we present the complete Hasse diagram of relative expressiveness. Motivated by applications in databases, this paper considers various fragments of the calculus of binary relations. The fragments are obtained by leaving out, or keeping in, some of the standard operators, along with some derived operators such as set difference, projection, coprojection, and residuation. For each considered fragment, a characterization is obtained for when two given binary relational structures are indistinguishable by expressions in that fragment. Inferring an appropriate DTD or XML Schema Definition (XSD) for a given collection of XML documents essentially reduces to learning deterministic regular expressions from sets of positive example words. Unfortunately, there is no algorithm capable of learning the complete class of deterministic regular expressions from positive examples only, as we will show. The regular expressions occurring in practical DTDs and XSDs, however, are such that every alphabet symbol occurs only a small number of times. As such, in practice it suffices to learn the subclass of deterministic regular expressions in which each alphabet symbol occurs at most k times, for some small k. We refer to such expressions as k-occurrence regular expressions (k-OREs for short). Motivated by this observation, we provide a probabilistic algorithm that learns k-OREs for increasing values of k, and selects the deterministic one that best describes the sample based on a Minimum Description Length argument. The effectiveness of the method is empirically validated both on real world and synthetic data. Furthermore, the method is shown to be conservative over the simpler classes of expressions considered in previous work.

Two natural decision problems regarding the XML query language XQuery are well-definedness and semantic type-checking. We study these problems in the setting of a relational fragment of XQuery. We show that well-definedness and semantic type-checking are undecidable, even in the positive-existential case. Nevertheless, for a ``pure'' variant of XQuery, in which no identification is made between an item and the singleton containing that item, the problems become decidable. We also consider the analogous problems in the setting of the nested relational calculus.

Regular expression patterns are a key feature of document processing languages like Perl and XDuce. It is in this context that the first and longest match policies have been proposed to disambiguate the pattern matching process. We formally define a matching semantics with these policies and show that the generally accepted method of simulating longest match by first match and recursion is incorrect. We continue by solving the associated type inference problem, which consists in calculating for every subexpression the set of words the subexpression can still match when these policies are in effect, and show how this algorithm can be used to efficiently implement the matching process., Comment: 22 pages

We describe a meta-querying system for databases containing queries in addition to ordinary data. In the context of such databases, a meta-query is a query about queries. Representing stored queries in XML, and using the standard XML manipulation language XSLT as a sublanguage, we show that just a few features need to be added to SQL to turn it into a fully-fledged meta-query language.
