The paper is devoted to the study of the backward behavior of solutions of the initial boundary value problem for the chevron pattern equations under homogeneous Dirichlet's boundary conditions. We prove that, as $t\rightarrow \infty$, the asymptotic behavior of solutions of the considered problem is completely determined by the dynamics of a finite set of functionals. Furthermore, we provide numerical evidence for the blow-up of certain solutions of the backward problem in finite time in 1D.

Magnetic field is a powerful tool for the manipulation of material's electronic and optical properties. In the domain of transition metal dichalcogenide monolayers, it allows one to unveil the spin, valley, and orbital properties of many-body excitonic complexes. Here we study theoretically the impact of normal-to-plane magnetic field on trions and trion-polaritons. We demonstrate that spin and orbital effects of a magnetic field give comparable contributions to the trion energies. Moreover, as magnetic field redistributes the free electron gas between two valleys in the conductance band, the trion-photon coupling becomes polarization and valley dependent. This results in an effective giant Zeeman splitting of trion-polaritons, in-line with the recent experimental observations.

We study the problem of global exponential stabilization of original Burgers' equations and the Burgers' equation with nonlocal nonlinearities by controllers depending on finitely many parameters. It is shown that solutions of the controlled equations are steering a concrete solution of the non-controlled system as $t\rightarrow \infty$ with an exponential rate.

The confined variational method in conjunction with the orthogonalizing pseudo-potential method and the stabilization method is used to study the low energy elastic scattering between two spin-polarized metastable positronium Ps(2\,$^{3}\!S_1$) atoms. Explicitly correlated Gaussian basis functions are adopted to properly describe the complicated Coulomb interaction among the four charged particles. The calculated $s$-wave scattering length ($\approx8.5\,a_0$) is positive, indicating the possibility of forming a stable Bose-Einstein condensate of fully spin-polarized $\text{Ps}(2\,^{3}\!S_1)$ atoms. Our results will open a new way of experimental realization of Ps condensate and development of $\gamma$-ray and $\text{Ps}(2\,^{3}\!S_1)$ atom lasers., Comment: 6 pages, 1 figure

We formulate a hyperspherical approach within standard configuration interaction calculations aiming at a description of large-scale dynamics of $N$-particle system. The channel wave function and the adiabatic channel energy are determined by solving a hyperradius-constrained eigenvalue problem of the adiabatic Hamiltonian. The needed matrix elements are analytically evaluated using correlated Gaussians with good orbital angular momentum and parity. The feasibility of the approach is tested in three-$\alpha$ system. A spectrum of the adiabatic channel energies is determined depending on the degree of localization of the basis functions.

An iterative optimization approach that simultaneously minimizes the energy and optimizes the Lagrange multipliers enforcing desired constraints is presented. The method is tested on previously established benchmark systems and it is proved to be efficient and accurate. The approach can also be efficiently used when the constraint is not a scalar quantity but a spatially varying function like the charge density distribution., Comment: 12 pages

The confined variational method is applied to investigate the low-energy elastic scattering of ortho-positronium from $\text{H}_2$ by first-principles quantum mechanics. Describing the correlation effect with explicitly correlated Gaussians, we obtain accurate $S$-wave phase shifts and pick-off annihilation parameters for different incident momenta. By a least-squares fit of the data to the effective-range theory, we determine the $S$-wave scattering length, $A_s=2.06a_0$, and the zero-energy value of the pick-off annihilation parameter, $^1\!\text{Z}_\text{eff}=0.1858$. The obtained $^1\!\text{Z}_\text{eff}$ agrees well with the precise experimental value of $0.186(1)$ (J.\ Phys.\ B \textbf{16}, 4065 (1983)) and the obtained $A_s$ agrees well with the value of $2.1(2)a_0$ estimated from the average experimental momentum-transfer cross section for Ps energy below 0.3 eV (J.\ Phys.\ B \textbf{36}, 4191 (2003))., Comment: 5 pages

In this paper we introduce a finite-parameters feedback control algorithm for stabilizing solutions of the Navier-Stokes-Voigt equations, the strongly damped nonlinear wave equations and the nonlinear wave equation with nonlinear damping term, the Benjamin-Bona-Mahony-Burgers equation and the KdV-Burgers equation. This algorithm capitalizes on the fact that such infinite-dimensional dissipative dynamical systems posses finite-dimensional long-time behavior which is represented by, for instance, the finitely many determining parameters of their long-time dynamics, such as determining Fourier modes, determining volume elements, determining nodes , etc..The algorithm utilizes these finite parameters in the form of feedback control to stabilize the relevant solutions. For the sake of clarity, and in order to fix ideas, we focus in this work on the case of low Fourier modes feedback controller, however, our results and tools are equally valid for using other feedback controllers employing other spatial coarse mesh interpolants.

In this paper, we study the interaction between a nonlinear focusing Robin type boundary source, a nonlinear defocusing interior source, and a weak damping term for nonlinear Schr\"odinger equations posed on the infinite half line. We construct solutions with negative initial energy satisfying a certain set of conditions which blow-up in finite time in the $H^1$-sense. We obtain a sufficient condition relating the powers of nonlinearities present in the model which allows construction of blow-up solutions. In addition to the blow-up property, we also discuss the stabilization property and the critical exponent for this model.

In this paper we introduce a finite-parameters feedback control algorithm for stabilizing solutions of various classes of damped nonlinear wave equations. Specifically, stabilization the zero steady state solution of initial boundary value problems for nonlinear weakly and strongly damped wave equations, nonlinear wave equation with nonlinear damping term and some related nonlinear wave equations, introducing a feedback control terms that employ parameters, such as, finitely many Fourier modes, finitely many volume elements and finitely many nodal observables and controllers. In addition, we also establish the stabilization of the zero steady state solution to initial boundary value problem for the damped nonlinear wave equation with a controller acting in a proper subdomain. Notably, the feedback controllers proposed here can be equally applied for stabilizing other solutions of the underlying equations.

Electron-phonon coupling (EPC) in bilayer graphene (BLG) at different doping levels is studied by first-principles calculations. The phonons considered are long-wavelength high-energy symmetric (S) and antisymmetric (AS) optical modes. Both are shown to have distinct EPC-induced phonon linewidths and frequency shifts as a function of the Fermi level $E_F$. We find that the AS mode has a strong coupling with the lowest two conduction bands when the Fermi level $E_F$ is nearly 0.5 eV above the neutrality point, giving rise to a giant linewidth (more than 100 cm$^{-1}$) and a significant frequency softening ($\sim$ 60 cm$^{-1}$). Our \emph{ab initio} calculations show that the origin of the dramatic change arises from the unusual band structure in BLG. The projection method is used to demonstrate the existence of positron attachment to three doubly excited states of helium. The e^+He(2s^2 1Se), e^+He(3s^2 1Se), and the e^+He(2s2p 3Po) states have binding energies of 0.447eV, 0.256eV and 0.486eV respectively. These energies were computed with the stochastic variational method and the configuration interaction method. These states will exist as resonances in the e^+ + He continuum and the e^+He(2s^2 1Se) state could be detectable in the e^+ + He collision spectrum. A resonance width of 0.068eV was computed for the e^+He(2s^2 1Se), state by using the complex rotation method. The existence of a series of e^+He(ns^2 1Se) resonances associated with the He(ns^2) double Rydberg series is also predicted and an explicit calculation demonstrating the existence of the e^+He(3s^2 1Se) state is reported., Comment: 4+bit pages, 1 figure. We prove the existence of regular dissipative solutions and global attractors for the 3D Brinkmann-Forchheimer equations with the nonlinearity of an arbitrary polynomial growth rate. In order to obtain this result, we prove the maximal regularity estimate for the corresponding semi-linear stationary Stokes problem using some modification of the nonlinear localization technique. The applications of our results to the Brinkmann-Forchheimer equation with the Navier-Stokes inertial term are also considered.

The confined variational method is used to generate a basis of correlated gaussians to describe the interaction region wave function for positron scattering from the H$_2$ molecule. The scattering length was $\approx -2.7$ $a_0$ while the zero energy $Z_{\rm eff}$ of 15.7 is compatible with experimental values. The variation of the scattering length and $Z_{\rm eff}$ with inter-nuclear distance was surprisingly rapid due to virtual state formation at $R \approx 3.4$ $a_0$.

Recently, the Navier-Stokes-Voight (NSV) model of viscoelastic incompressible fluid has been proposed as a regularization of the 3D Navier-Stokes equations for the purpose of direct numerical simulations. In this work we prove that the global attractor of the $D NSV equations, driven by an analytic forcing, consists of analytic functions. A consequence of this result is that the spectrum of the solutions of the 3D NSV system, lying on the global attractor, have exponentially decaying tail, despite the fact that the equations behave like a damped hyperbolic system, rather than the parabolic one. This result provides an additional evidence that the 3D NSV with the small regularization parameter enjoys similar statistical properties as the 3D Navier-Stokes equations. Finally, we calculate a lower bound for the exponential decaying scale -- the scale at which the spectrum of the solution start to decay exponentially, and establish a similar bound for the steady state solutions of the 3D NSV and 3D Navier-Stokes equations. Our estimate coincides with similar available lower bound for the smallest dissipation length scale of solutions of the 3D Navier-Stokes equations.

We investigate the long-term dynamics of the three-dimensional Navier-Stokes-Voight model of viscoelastic incompressible fluid. Specifically, we derive upper bounds for the number of determining modes for the 3D Navier-Stokes-Voight equations and for the dimension of a global attractor of a semigroup generated by these equations. Viewed from the numerical analysis point of view we consider the Navier-Stokes-Voight model as a non-viscous (inviscid) regularization of the three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations. Furthermore, we also show that the weak solutions of the Navier-Stokes-Voight equations converge, in the appropriate norm, to the weak solutions of the inviscid simplified Bardina model, as the viscosity coefficient $\nu \to 0$.

The structure of the unnatural parity states of PsH, LiPs, NaPs and KPs are investigated with the configuration interaction and stochastic variational methods. The binding energies (in hartree) are found to be 8.17x10-4, 4.42x10-4, 15.14x10-4 and 21.80x10-4 respectively. These states are constructed by first coupling the two electrons into a configuration which is predominantly 3Pe, and then adding a p-wave positron. All the active particles are in states in which the relative angular momentum between any pair of particles is at least L = 1. The LiPs state is Borromean since there are no 3-body bound subsystems (of the correct symmetry) of the (Li+, e-, e-, e+) particles that make up the system. We consider non-relativistic systems in quantum mechanics interacting through the Coulomb potential, and discuss the existence of bound states which are stable against spontaneous dissociation into smaller atoms or ions. We review the studies that have been made of specific mass configurations and also the properties of the domain of stability in the space of masses or inverse masses. These rigorous results are supplemented by numerical investigations using accurate variational methods. We report on quantum Monte Carlo calculations of the ground and low-lying excited states of $A=9,10$ nuclei using realistic Hamiltonians containing the Argonne $v_{18}$ two-nucleon potential alone or with one of several three-nucleon potentials, including Urbana IX and three of the new Illinois models. The calculations begin with correlated many-body wave functions that have an $\alpha$-like core and multiple p-shell nucleons, $LS$-coupled to the appropriate $(J^{\pi};T)$ quantum numbers for the state of interest. After optimization, these variational trial functions are used as input to a Green's function Monte Carlo calculation of the energy, using a constrained path algorithm. We find that the Hamiltonians that include Illinois three-nucleon potentials reproduce ten states in $^9$Li, $^9$Be, $^{10}$Be, and $^{10}$B with an rms deviation as little as 900 keV. In particular, we obtain the correct 3$^+$ ground state for $^{10}$B, whereas the Argonne $v_{18}$ alone or with Urbana IX predicts a 1$^+$ ground state. A variational calculation of the lower singlet and triplet states of positively charged excitons (trions) confined to a single quantum well and in the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field is presented. We study the dependence of the energy levels and of the binding energy on the well width and on the magnetic field strength. Our results are compared with the available experimental data and show a good qualitative and quantitative agreement. In the past, several efficient methods have been developed to solve the Schroedinger equation for four-nucleon bound states accurately. These are the Faddeev-Yakubovsky, the coupled-rearrangement-channel Gaussian-basis variational, the stochastic variational, the hyperspherical variational, the Green's function Monte Carlo, the no-core shell model and the effective interaction hyperspherical harmonic methods. In this article we compare the energy eigenvalue results and some wave function properties using the realistic AV8' NN interaction. A variational calculation of the spin-singlet and spin-triplet state of a negatively charged exciton (trion) confined to a single quantum well and in the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field is presented. We calculated the probability density and the pair correlation function of the singlet and triplet trion states. The dependence of the energy levels and of the binding energy on the well width and on the magnetic field strength was investigated. We compared our results with the available experimental data on GaAs/AlGaAs quantum wells and find that in the low magnetic field region (B<18 T) the observed transition are those of the singlet and the dark triplet trion (with angular momentum $L_z=-1$), while for high magnetic fields (B>25 T) the dark trion becomes optically inactive and possibly a transition to a bright triplet trion (angular momentum $L_z=0$) state is observed., Comment: 9 pages, 10 figures submitted to Phys. A variational calculation of the ground-state energy of neutral excitons and of positively and negatively charged excitons (trions) confined in a single-quantum well is presented. We study the dependence of the correlation energy and of the binding energy on the well width and on the hole mass. The conditional probability distribution for positively and negatively charged excitons is obtained, providing information on the correlation and the charge distribution in the system. A comparison is made with available experimental data on trion binding energies in GaAs-, ZnSe-, and CdTe-based quantum well structures, which indicates that trions become localized with decreasing quantum well width., Comment: 9 pages, 11 figures

The spectra of quantum dots of different geometry (``quantum ring'', ``quantum cylinder'', ``spherical square-well'' and ``parabolic confinement'') are studied. Mathematically rigorous theory of the two-body contact interaction in three dimension is reviewed. Local potential realizations of this proper contact interaction are given in terms of Poschl-Teller, exponential and square-well potentials. It is shown that the instanton-induced interaction in qq pairs, iterated in t-channel, leads to a meson-exchange interactions between quarks. In this way one can achieve a simultaneous understanding of low-lying mesons, baryons and the nuclear force. The discussion is general and does not necessarily rely on the instanton-induced interaction. Any nonperturbative gluonic interaction between quarks, which is a source of the dynamical chiral symmetry breaking and explains the $\pi$ - $\rho$ mass splitting, will imply an effective meson exchange picture in baryons. Due to the (anti)screening there is a big difference between the initial 't Hooft interaction and the effective meson-exchange interaction. It is demonstrated that the effective meson-exchange interaction, adjusted to the baryon spectrum, does not bind the scalar diquark and does not induce any significant quark-diquark clustering in the nucleon because of the nontrivial role played by the Pauli principle., Comment: Final version to appear in Phys. A variational calculation of the ground state energy of a biexciton in a GaAs/AlGaAs quantum well is presented. The well width fluctuations leading to trapping of the biexcitons are modeled by a parabolic potential. The results obtained for different well widths are compared with recent experimental data. Good agreement is obtained both for the biexciton binding energy and for the Haynes factor. We find that the structure of a biexciton is similar to the one of the H_2 molecule., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures

The positronium molecule (Ps$_2$) has not been experimentally observed yet because its tiny (4.5 eV) binding energy cannot be detected when the molecule annihilates by emitting two photons with energy of 0.51 MeV each. It is shown in this paper that the electric dipole transition between the recently found L=1 excited-state and the L=0 ground-state with its characteristic photon energy of 4.94 eV is a clear signature of the existence of the positronium molecule and the possibility of its experimental observation is realistic. The probability of this transition is about 17 % of the total decay rate. We re-examine the results of A. Thilagam [Phys. Rev. B 55, 7804 (1997)], who calculated the ratio of the binding energies of the two dimensional exciton complexes. We point out that, for charged biexciton complexes, this calculation is oversimplified, and these systems do not always form bound states if they interact via pure Coulomb interaction. If experiment proved the existence of these objects, their bindings would have to be explained by other mechanisms., Comment: 2 pages

A new, hitherto unknown bound state of the positronium molecule, with orbital angular momentum L=1 and negative parity is reported. This state is stable against autodissociation even if the masses of the positive and negative charges are not equal. The existence of a similar state in two-dimension has also been investigated. We discuss the isospin-breaking mass differences among baryons, with particular attention in the charm sector to the $\Sigma_c^{+}-\Sigma_c^0$, $\Sigma_c^{++}-\Sigma_c^0$, and $\Xi_c^+-\Xi_c^0$ splittings. Simple potential models cannot accommodate the trend of the available data on charm baryons. We present a chiral constituent quark model for light and strange baryons providing a unified description of their ground states and excitation spectra. The model relies on constituent quarks and Goldstone bosons arising as effective degrees of freedom of low-energy QCD from the spontaneous breaking of chiral symmetry. The spectra of the three-quark systems are obtained from a precise variational solution of the Schr\"odinger equation with a semirelativistic Hamiltonian. We study the performance of some recent potential models suggested as effective interactions between constituent quarks. In particular, we address constituent quark models for baryons with hybrid Q-Q interactions stemming from one-gluon plus meson exchanges. Upon recalculating two of such models we find them to fail in describing the N and \Delta spectra. Our calculations are based on accurate solutions of the three-quark systems in both a variational Schr\"odinger and a rigorous Faddeev approach. It is argued that hybrid {Q-Q} interactions encounter difficulties in describing baryon spectra due to the specific contributions from one-gluon and pion exchanges together. In contrast, a chiral constituent quark model with a Q-Q interaction solely derived from Goldstone-boson exchange is capable of providing a unified description of both the N and \Delta spectra in good agreement with phenomenology., Comment: 21 pages, LaTeX

The energy and the width of resonance states are determined by analytic continuation of bound-state energies as a function of the coupling constant (potential strength). The advantage of the method is that the existing techniques for calculation of bound states can be applied, without any modifications, to determine the position of resonances. This paper presents a fortran program to solve diverse few-body problems with the stochastic variational method. Depending on the available computational resources the program is applicable for $N=2-3-4-5-6-...$-body systems with $L=0$ total orbital momentum. The solution with the stochastic variational method is ``automatic'' and universal. One defines the system (number of particles, masses, symmetry, interaction, etc. ) and the program finds the ground state energy and wave function. The examples include nuclear (alpha particle: four-body, $^6$He: six-body), atomic (td$\mu^-$ and $e^+e^-e^+e^-$) and subnuclear (the nucleon and the delta in a nonrelativistic quark model) systems. The solutions are accurate for excited states as well, and even the Efimov-states can be studied. A new formulation is presented for a variational calculation of $N$-body systems on a correlated Gaussian basis with arbitrary angular momenta. The rotational motion of the system is described with a single spherical harmonic of the total angular momentum $L$, and thereby needs no explicit coupling of partial waves between particles. A simple generating function for the correlated Gaussian is exploited to derive the matrix elements. The formulation is applied to various Coulomb three-body systems such as $e^-e^-e^+, tt\mu, td\mu$, and $\alpha e^-e^-$ up to $L=4$ in order to show its usefulness and versatility. This paper extends the application of the stochastic variational method to noncentral interactions. Several examples are presented for three- and four-nucleon systems with realistic nuclear forces. The correlated Gaussians easily cope with the strong short range repulsion of the potential and the stochastic variational method efficiently selects the most important spin, isospin and orbital angular momentum components of the wave function. The structure of the light proton and neutron rich nuclei is studied in a microscopic multicluster model using the stochastic variational method. This approach enables us to describe the weakly bound nature of these nuclei in a consistent way. Applications for various nuclei $^{6-9}$Li, $^7$Be, $^8$B, $^9$C, $^{9-10}$Be, $^{9-10}$B presented.
