Background. Celiac disease (CD) is significantly underdiagnosed, despite significant efforts made in the last decades to increase its diagnostic rate. This has lead to a high need for developing new diagnostic strategies. Our aim was to evaluate the diagnostic performance of two routine hematologic indices for CD. Methods. In a prospective observational study, 34 newly diagnosed CD patients, 34 age-sex matched controls with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and 16 treated CD patients were assessed regarding the differences in mean lymphocyte count (LY), red blood cell distribution width (RDW) and their ratio (RDW/LY). Neuroendocrine carcinomas of the uterine cervix are rare, but extremely aggressive, gynecological malignancies that are associated with an overall poor prognosis. The present study reports the case of a 41-year-old patient diagnosed with large cell neuroendocrine cervical tumor. A radical total hysterectomy with bilateral adnexectomy, pelvic and lymph node dissection was performed. Background: Gastrointestinal stromal tumors are the most common primary mesenchymal tumors of gastrointestinal, more frequently located in the stomach (60-70%), followed by small intestine (20-25%), colon and rectum (5%), and esophagus (< 5%). They typically express CD117, CD34, S100 and SMA. This study is aiming to characterize GISTs immunoprofile and to establish correlations between morpho-patological and immunohistochemical parameters. Material and methods: Tissue samples of 141 GISTs, from "Victor Babes" Institute files, were evaluated using H&E stain and immunohistochemistry for CD117, CD34, SMA and S100. Statistical analysis was made by Student t-test, "paired two samples for mean" variant. Results: The patients (M : F = 77 : 64), aged from 32 to 84 (mean = 56, SD = 1.6), had spindle cells GISTs in 53.18 %, epithelioid in 29.8% and mixed pattern in 17.02% of tumors. Immunohistochemically, CD117 was positive in 72.34% of GISTs, CD34 in 79.4%, SMA in 56.02% and S-100 in 69.5% of cases. A female predominance was encountered in all antibodies immunohistochemical expressions, except S100. The fusiform pattern was the most frequent for all tested antibodies and the small intestine was the favorite site for all studied markers. Statistical analysis revealed no significant correlation between antibodies. Conclusions: Our results confirm CD117 and CD34 as sensitive markers for GISTs diagnosis. Immunohistochemical expressions of all tested markers, except S100, were more frequently encountered in women and in the spindle cell type GISTs; the small intestine was the most frequent localization. Introduction: Lung cancer is the leading cause of death among neoplasias, worldwide. Non-small cell lung carcinomas (NSCLC) represent the majority of lung epithelial malignancies (>75%). Compared to other malignant tumors, lung cancer pathology is very heterogeneous; currently, there are no generally accepted proteic and molecular markers for prediction and prognosis related to these tumors. The aim of this study is to characterize the proteic and molecular aspects of some factors with major role in solid tumors carcinogenesis in our geographical area, to look for possible correlations between the proteic expressions of EGFR, Cerb-B2 and EGFR gene amplification in lung cancer, and to analise their potential prognostic implications. Material and method: We studied 72 tissular samples of NSCLC stages I-IV. After the histopathological diagnosis, these cases were analized by immunohistochemistry (IHC) for EGFR and Cerb-B2 proteins, and by fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) for EGFR gene amplification. The IHC and FISH results were statistically analized for possible correlations with histological type, stage and clinical evolution. Results: EGFR overexpression was more frequently encountered in adenocarcinomas (34.02%). The Cerb-B2 protein had an approximativelly uniform distribution between the different studied histological types: adenocarcinomas (39.02%), squamous carcinomas (34.78%), and adenosquamous carcinomas (33.33%). Only eight cases presented both Cerb-B2 and EGFR positive IHC reactions (11.11%). EGFR gene overexpression (FISH) was detected in 11 cases (15.27%). FISH positive cases associated short survival intervals or early metastases. Conclusion: EGFR gene amplification detected by FISH may be considered a prognostic marker in lung carcinomas. The histopathological and immunohistochemical diagnosis represents an essential stage in the management of lung tumours. Bronchoscopy is compulsory - it offers data regarding tumour extension and may lead to histo-/cytological diagnosis. When the endobronchial tumour expression is missing, the transbronchial biopsy at the level of the tumour may offer the tissue necessary for histological typing. The method is rarely used and usually guidance is performed through one of the following methods: fluoroscopy, computed tomography, endobronchial ultrasound, electromagnetic navigation. Through these guidance methods, the transbronchial biopsies has a rate of success, according to literature, of 62-77%. In the Thoracic Surgery Clinic of the Bucharest Oncology Institute, in the period January 2015 - February 2017, we performed peripheral transbronchial biopsies in 36 patients with an imaging diagnosis of lung tumour, without histopathologic diagnosis. Biopsies have not been guided during the procedures, using as a reference only the pre-procedure CT guidance. The histopathologic diagnosis could be stated based on tissue appropriately collected from 26 patients. The diagnosis rate for the tumoral transbronchial peripheral biopsies performed in this period is 72.22%, an excellent value considering that biopsies have been performed without any guidance method. INTRODUCTION Secondary amyloidosis is a serious disease characterized by abnormal protein deposition in various organs, with high mortality by kidney and heart failure. The causes of amyloidosis vary, as do treatment options. CASE PRESENTATION We report the case of a patient of 48 years old who presented to the emergency department for intense dyspnea, orthopnea and generalized edema, saying a weight gain of 30 kg in the last month; the patient was previously obese (130kg/186cm). Myxedema, nephrotic syndrome and cirrhosis were excluded; NT proBNP and uric acid suggested heart failure in a patient with preserved systolic function, Impairment of diastolic cardiac function, microvolt standard ECG, associated with biological hyperproteinemia , mild anemia , spontaneous change INR, raised the suspicion of amyloidosis confi rmed histologically by subcutaneous tissue biopsy with specifi c staining in polarized light . Immunogram performed later shows marked increase in all immunoglobulins , suggesting secondary amyloidosis ( patient had a perianal fi stula with recurrent abscesses, frequently drained and neglected lately ) . Combined antibiotic treatment associated with heart failure treatment was established, with progressive regression of symptoms, which allowed surgery and the successful resolution of the perianal fi stula, after about six months of conservative treatment. Clinical and biological exams one year after surgery were normal. CONCLUSION Although amyloidosis is considered a rare disease, its probably underdiagnosed because it escapes medical thinking and patients can die without even having a clear diagnosis.
