ZnTiO3 nanopowder as a constitutive component in compact production was primarily characterized. Scanning electron micrographs of as received powder were recorded. Mercury porosimetry and nitrogen adsorption were also performed on loose powder. Particle size distribution in a water powder suspension was determined with a laser particle size analyser. Compaction was performed on different pressures in a range from 100 to 400 MPa using the uniaxial double sided compaction technique without binder and lubricant. Micrographs of compacted specimens were obtained using scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy. Pore size distribution was also determined by mercury porosimetry and nitrogen adsorption. Results revealed that with increasing pressure during compaction interagglomerate pores diminish in size until they reach some critical diameter related to the intra-agglomerate pore size.

The Bray-Liebhafsky (BL) oscillatory reaction generated in the batch reactor at 62- 68 oC was perturbed by cobalt(II)-nitrate, supported on the macroreticular copolymer of poly-4-vinylpyridine with divinylbenzene (Co-PVPDVB). The kinetic data was analyzed of the complex pathways of the hydrogen peroxide decomposition in the examined BL reaction. The obtained results confirm that the kinetics of the BL reaction in the presence Co-PVPDVB comes partially from the Co-catalyst and partially from the macroreticular copolymer support.

Owing to their surface plasmon-based operation, arrays of subwavelength holes show extraordinary electromagnetic transmission and intense field localizations of several orders of magnitude. Thus they were proposed as the basic building blocks for a number of applications utilizing the enhancement of nonlinear optical effects. We designed and simulated nanometer-sized subwavelength holes using an analytical approach. In our experiments we used the scanning probe method for nanolithographic fabrication of subwavelength hole arrays in silver layers sputtered on a positive photoresist substrate. We fabricated ordered nanohole patterns with different shapes, dispositions and proportions. The smallest width was about 60 nm. We characterized the fabricated samples by atomic force microscopy.

Chromium dissolution in aqueous sulfuric acid solutions in the pH range 0.5 –3 was studied electrochemically by the potentiostatic or very slow potentiodynamic method, and by the analyses of the Cr ion concentrations in the electrolyte formed during the experiments. It was shown that the electrochemical anodic dissolution follows a common Tafel line with a slope of ca. 120 mVdec-1, independent of the solution pH and the hydrodynamics while the passivation potentials and passivation currents were independent on hydrodynamics but strongly dependent on the pH. In parallel with the electrochemical dissolution, a considerable "anomalous" or chemical Cr dissolution process occurs, as evidenced by the spectrophotometric analyses of the electrolytes for Cr ions after prolonged potentiostating of the electrodes at different potentials, as well as by measuring the electrode weight losses. All these results indicate the existence of a potential independent reaction of Cr dissolution occurring in parallel to the anodic dissolution process. Mechanisms for both the electrochemical and the chemical process are proposed. The consequences of these phenomena on the behavior of some practical systems where chromium or a chromium alloy (e.g., stainless steels) are used are discussed.

The possibility of characterization of aluminium powders using a horizontal coherer has been considered. Al powders of known dimension were treated with a high frequency electromagnetic field or with a DC electric field, which were increased until a dielectric breakdown occurred. Using a multifunctional card PC-428 Electronic Design and a suitable interface between the coherer and PC, the activation time of the coherer was measured as a function of powder dimension and the distance between the coherer electrodes. It was also shown that the average dimension of powders of unknown size could be determined using the coherer.

Far infrared reflection spectra, at room and liquid nitrogen temperature, of PbTe single crystals doped with iron are presented. Plasma minima were observed at about 160 cm–1 and 180 cm–1 for room and liquid nitrogen temperature, respectively. Using the reflectivity diagrams and their minima the values of the hole concentrations and their mobility at both temperatures were calculated and compared with galvanomagnetic measurements. All these results indicated that when PbTe is doped with a small concentration of Fe, the hole concentration is reduced by one order of magnitude and the free carrier mobility is larger when compared to pure PbTe.

In this study, a novel procedure, based on application of the Chicot–Lesage (C–L) composite hardness model, was proposed for the determination of an absolute hardness of electrolytically produced copper coatings. The Cu coatings were electrodeposited on the Si(111) substrate by the pulsating current (PC) regime with a variation of the following parameters: the pause duration, the current density amplitude and the coating thickness. The topography of produced coatings was characterized by atomic force microscope (AFM), while a hardness of the coatings was examined by Vickers microindentation test. Applying the C–L model, the critical relative indentation depth (RID)c of 0.14 was determined, which is independent of all examined parameters of the PC regime. The mechanical properties of systems consisting of copper coatings electrodeposited on both brass sheet (BS) and thick electrodeposited nickel coating (ED Ni) substrates have been investigated. The electrodeposition of copper coatings was performed with and without the ultrasound assistance. The ultrasound application decreases root mean square (RMS) roughness of deposited Cu coating on both applied substrates, as obtained from non-contact AFM measurement. The coating roughness is highly dependent on the substrate roughness, being the smallest for the Cu coatings deposited on ED Ni substrate with the ultrasound mixing. The hardness and adhesion properties were characterized using the Vickers microindentation test. Model of Korsunsky was applied to the experimental data for determination the film hardness and the model of Chen-Gao was used for the adhesion evaluation. The introduction of ultrasonic agitation caused the changes in the film microstructure, and consequently in the mechanical properties. The copper coatings on both substrates, have higher hardness when deposited from electrolyte with ultrasound agitation. Although the type of the substrate has the major influence on the adhesion strength, it can be said that Cu electrodeposition with ultrasonic mixing contributes to an increase in adhesion.
