Abstract

We present a campaign designed to train the GRANDMA network and its infrastructure to follow up on transient alerts and detect their early afterglows. In preparation for O4 II campaign, we focused on GRB alerts as they are expected to be an electromagnetic counterpart of gravitational-wave events. Our goal was to improve our response to the alerts and start prompt observations as soon as possible to better prepare the GRANDMA network for the fourth observational run of LIGO-Virgo-Kagra (which started at the end of May 2023), and future missions such as SM. To receive, manage and send out observational plans to our partner telescopes we set up dedicated infrastructure and a rota of follow-up adcates were organized to guarantee round-the-clock assistance to our telescope teams. To ensure a great number of observations, we focused on Swift GRBs whose localization errors were generally smaller than the GRANDMA telescopes' field of view. This allowed us to bypass the transient identification process and focus on the reaction time and efficiency of the network. During 'Ready for O4 II', 11 Swift/INTEGRAL GRB triggers were selected, nine fields had been observed, and three afterglows were detected (GRB 220403B, GRB 220427A, GRB 220514A), with 17 GRANDMA telescopes and 17 amateur astronomers from the citizen science project Kilonova-Catcher. Here we highlight the GRB 220427A analysis where our long-term follow-up of the host galaxy allowed us to obtain a photometric redshift of $z=0.82\pm0.09$, its lightcurve elution, fit the decay slope of the afterglows, and study the properties of the host galaxy.

Abstract

GRB~230812B is a bright and relatively nearby ($z =0.36$) long gamma-ray burst (GRB) that has generated significant interest in the community and has thus been observed over the entire electromagnetic spectrum. We report over 80 observations in X-ray, ultraviolet, optical, infrared, and sub-millimeter bands from the GRANDMA (Global Rapid Advanced Network for Multi-messenger Addicts) network of observatories and from observational partners. Adding complementary data from the literature, we then derive essential physical parameters associated with the ejecta and external properties (i.e. the geometry and environment) of the GRB and compare with other analyses of this event. We spectroscopically confirm the presence of an associated supernova, SN2023pel, and we derive a photospheric expansion velocity of v $\sim$ 17$\times10^3$ km s$^{-1}$. We analyze the photometric data first using empirical fits of the flux and then with full Bayesian Inference. We again strongly establish the presence of a supernova in the data, with a maximum (pseudo-)bolometric luminosity of $5.75 \times 10^{42}$ erg/s, at $15.76^{+0.81}_{-1.21}$ days (in the observer frame) after the trigger, with a half-max time width of 22.0 days. We compare these values with those of SN1998bw, SN2006aj, and SN2013dx. Our best-fit model favours a very low density environment ($\log_{10}({n_{\rm ISM}/{\rm cm}^{-3}}) = -2.38^{+1.45}_{-1.60}$) and small values for the jet's core angle $\theta_{\rm core} = 1.54^{+1.02}_{-0.81} \ \rm{deg}$ and viewing angle $\theta_{\rm obs} = 0.76^{+1.29}_{-0.76} \ \rm{deg}$. GRB 230812B is thus one of the best observed afterglows with a distinctive supernova bump.

Abstract

GRB 221009A is the brightest Gamma-Ray Burst (GRB) detected in more than 50 years of study. In this paper, we present observations in the X-ray and optical domains after the GRB obtained by the GRANDMA Collaboration (which includes observations from more than 30 professional and amateur telescopes) and the Insight-HXMT Collaboration. We study the optical afterglow with empirical fitting from GRANDMA+HXMT data, augmented with data from the literature up to 60 days. We then model numerically, using a Bayesian approach, the GRANDMA and HXMT-LE afterglow observations, that we augment with Swift-XRT and additional optical/NIR observations reported in the literature. We find that the GRB afterglow, extinguished by a large dust column, is most likely behind a combination of a large Milky-Way dust column combined with moderate low-metallicity dust in the host galaxy. Using the GRANDMA+HXMT-LE+XRT dataset, we find that the simplest model, where the observed afterglow is produced by synchrotron radiation at the forward external shock during the deceleration of a top-hat relativistic jet by a uniform medium, fits the multi-wavelength observations only moderately well, with a tension between the observed temporal and spectral evolution. This tension is confirmed when using the extended dataset. We find that the consideration of a jet structure (Gaussian or power-law), the inclusion of synchrotron self-Compton emission, or the presence of an underlying supernova do not improve the predictions, showing that the modelling of GRB22109A will require going beyond the most standard GRB afterglow model. Placed in the global context of GRB optical afterglows, we find the afterglow of GRB 221009A is luminous but not extraordinarily so, highlighting that some aspects of this GRB do not deviate from the global known sample despite its extreme energetics and the peculiar afterglow evolution., Comment: Accepted to ApJL for the special issue, 37 pages, 23 pages main text, 6 tables, 13 figures

Abstract

OJ 287 is a BL Lacertae type quasar in which the active galactic nucleus (AGN) outshines the host galaxy by an order of magnitude. The only exception to this may be at minimum light when the AGN activity is so low that the host galaxy may make quite a considerable contribution to the photometric intensity of the source. Such a dip or a fade in the intensity of OJ 287 occurred in November 2017, when its brightness was about 1.75 magnitudes lower than the recent mean level. We compare the observations of this fade with similar fades in OJ 287 observed earlier in 1989, 1999, and 2010. It appears that there is a relatively strong reddening of the B$-$V colours of OJ 287 when its V-band brightness drops below magnitude 17. Similar changes are also seen V$-$R, V$-$I, and R$-$I colours during these deep fades. These data support the conclusion that the total magnitude of the host galaxy is $V=18.0 \pm 0.3$, corresponding to $M_{K}=-26.5 \pm 0.3$ in the K-band. This is in agreement with the results, obtained using the integrated surface brightness method, from recent surface photometry of the host. These results should encourage us to use the colour separation method also in other host galaxies with strongly variable AGN nuclei. In the case of OJ 287, both the host galaxy and its central black hole are among the biggest known, and its position in the black hole mass-galaxy mass diagram lies close to the mean correlation., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Abstract

Since July 2014, the ESA Gaia mission has been surveying the entire sky down to magnitude 20.7 in the visible. In addition to the millions of stars, thousands of Solar System Objects (SSOs) are observed daily. By comparing their positions to those of known objects, a daily processing pipeline filters known objects from potential discoveries. However, owing to Gaia's specific scanning law designed for stars, potential newly discovered moving objects are characterized by very few observations, acquired over a limited time. This aspect was recognized early in the design of the Gaia data processing. A daily processing pipeline dedicated to these candidate discoveries was set up to release calls for observations to a network of ground-based telescopes. Their aim is to acquire follow-up astrometry and to characterize these objects. From the astrometry measured by Gaia, preliminary orbital solutions are determined, allowing to predict the position of these potentially new discovered objects in the sky accounting for the large parallax between Gaia and the Earth (separated by 0.01 au). A specific task within the Gaia Consortium has been responsible for the distribution of requests for follow-up observations of potential Gaia SSO discoveries. Since late 2016, these calls for observations (called alerts) are published daily via a Web interface, freely available to anyone world-wide. Between November 2016 and July 2020, over 1700 alerts have been published, leading to the successful recovery of more than 200 objects. Among those, six have provisional designation assigned with the Gaia observations, the others being previously known objects with poorly characterized orbits, precluding identification at the time of Gaia observations. There is a clear trend for objects with a high inclination to be unidentified, revealing a clear bias in the current census of SSOs against high inclination populations., Comment: Submitted to Astronomy & Astrophysics

Abstract

GRANDMA is an international project that coordinates telescope observations of transient sources with large localization uncertainties. Such sources include gravitational wave events, gamma-ray bursts and neutrino events. GRANDMA currently coordinates 25 telescopes (70 scientists), with the aim of optimizing the imaging strategy to maximize the probability of identifying an optical counterpart of a transient source. Abstract

We present the results of short observational program for asteroid 6478 Gault with using of V and R Johnson filters realized at the Kyiv Comet Station during January-April 2019. Color indices and distribution of brightness in the comet-like tail were calculated. We made a comparative analysis of circumstances of the asteroid 6478 Gault activity with others morphologically similar active Main Belt asteroids.

Abstract

GRANDMA is a network of 25 telescopes of different sizes, including both photometric and spectroscopic facilities. The network aims to coordinate follow-up observations of gravitational-wave candidate alerts, especially those with large localisation uncertainties, to reduce the delay between the initial detection and the optical confirmation. In this paper, we detail GRANDMA's observational performance during Advanced LIGO/Advanced Virgo Observing Run 3 (O3), focusing on the second part of O3; this includes summary statistics pertaining to coverage and possible astrophysical origin of the candidates. To do so, we quantify our observation efficiency in terms of delay between gravitational-wave candidate trigger time, observations, and the total coverage. Using an optimised and robust coordination system, GRANDMA followed-up about 90 % of the gravitational-wave candidate alerts, i.e. 49 out of 56 candidates. This led to coverage of over 9000 deg2 during O3. The delay between the gravitational-wave candidate trigger and the first observation was below 1.5 hour for 50 % of the alerts. We did not detect any electromagnetic counterparts to the gravitational-wave candidates during O3, likely due to the very large localisation areas (on average thousands of degrees squares) and relatively large distance of the candidates (above 200 Mpc for 60 % of BNS candidates). We derive constraints on potential kilonova properties for two potential binary neutron star coalescences (GW190425 and S200213t), assuming that the events' locations were imaged., Comment: 31 pages, 15 figures

We present the Global Rapid Advanced Network Devoted to the Multi-messenger Addicts (GRANDMA). The network consists of 21 telescopes with both photometric and spectroscopic facilities. They are connected together thanks to a dedicated infrastructure. The network aims at coordinating the observations of large sky position estimates of transient events to enhance their follow-up and reduce the delay between the initial detection and the optical confirmation. The GRANDMA program mainly focuses on follow-up of gravitational-wave alerts to find and characterise the electromagnetic counterpart during the third observational campaign of the Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo detectors. But it allows for any follow-up of transient alerts involving neutrinos or gamma-ray bursts, even with poor spatial localisation. We present the different facilities, tools, and methods we developed for this network, and show its efficiency using observations of LIGO/Virgo S190425z, a binary neutron star merger candidate. We furthermore report on all GRANDMA follow-up observations performed during the first six months of the LIGO-Virgo observational campaign, and we derive constraints on the kilonova properties assuming that the events' locations were imaged by our telescopes., Comment: 26 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

CCD photometric observations of the dwarf nova V1006 Cyg were carried out in 2015-2017 with 11 telescopes located at 7 observatories. They covered the 2015 superoutburst with rebrightening, five normal outbursts of ~4-day duration and one wide outburst that lasted at least seven days. The interval between normal outbursts was 16 and 22 days, and between superoutbursts is expected to be longer than 124 days. The positive superhumps with the mean period of 0^d.10544(10) and 0^d.10406(17) were detected during the 2015 superoutburst and during the short-term quiescence between rebrightening and the start of the first normal outburst, respectively. During a wide 2015 outburst the orbital period 0^d.09832(15) was found. The amplitude of this signal was ~2.5 times larger at the outburst decline than at its end. During the quiescence stage between the first and the second normal outbursts in 2017 we possibly detected the negative superhumps with the period of 0^d.09714(7). In all other cases of quiescence we found only the quasi-periodic brightness variations on a time scale of 20-30 minutes with a different degree of coherence and a variable amplitude reaching 0.5 mag in extremal cases., Comment: 17 pages, 10 figures, two tables, accepted for publication in COASP

Abstract

We present the results of our power spectral density analysis for the BL Lac object OJ\,287, utilizing the {\it Fermi}-LAT survey at high-energy $\gamma$-rays, {\it Swift}-XRT in X-rays, several ground-based telescopes and the {\it Kepler} satellite in the optical, and radio telescopes at GHz frequencies. The light curves are modeled in terms of continuous-time auto-regressive moving average (CARMA) processes. Owing to the inclusion of the {\it Kepler} data, we were able to construct \emph{for the first time} the optical variability power spectrum of a blazar without any gaps across $\sim6$ dex in temporal frequencies. Our analysis reveals that the radio power spectra are of a colored-noise type on timescales ranging from tens of years down to months, with no evidence for breaks or other spectral features. The overall optical power spectrum is also consistent with a colored noise on the variability timescales ranging from 117 years down to hours, with no hints of any quasi-periodic oscillations. The X-ray power spectrum resembles the radio and optical power spectra on the analogous timescales ranging from tens of years down to months. Finally, the $\gamma$-ray power spectrum is noticeably different from the radio, optical, and X-ray power spectra of the source: we have detected a characteristic relaxation timescale in the {\it Fermi}-LAT data, corresponding to $\sim 150$\,days, such that on timescales longer than this, the power spectrum is consistent with uncorrelated (white) noise, while on shorter variability timescales there is correlated (colored) noise., Comment: ApJ accepted

Abstract

The research reveals the main reasons that prevent the extension of commercial apricot plantations in Ukraine and worldwide. This brief description includes eight cultivars from Ukrainian and foreign breeding programmes. The trials conducted in the Right-Bank subzone of the Western Forest Steppe of Ukraine. The plants from Ukrainian breeding programme 'Melitopolskyi Ranni?', 'Botsadivskyi', 'Siaivo', 'Kumir', 'Osoblyvyi Denysiuka', as well as the foreign one - 'Robada', 'Harogem', 'HJA-19', were distinguished by high adaptability to the complex of adverse overwintering factors in the above-mentioned region. These samples did not lose the acquired level of frost resistance under the influence of provoking thaws. A comprehensive assessment of drought resistance, based on water-holding capacity, turgor recovery degree, water deficiency, and leaves' hydration of the presented varieties, established that all variants of the experiment were not inferior to the best popular cultivars. According to the the biological feature of buds' formation at an early age, the cultivars 'Robada' and 'HJA-19' were characterized as early-fruiting. The yield and quality indicators for the 2021-2022 years of research were evaluated. Average fruit weight was noted in all samples, with the cultivar 'Siaivo' exceeding the average. To improve the assortment and enrich the apricot gene pool collections with the best samples suitable for cultivation in the Forest-Steppe Zone of Ukraine, according to the results of the study, the following researched cultivars were included in the collection of valuable samples of the common apricot gene pool of the Institute of Horticulture of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine: 'Melitopolskyi Ranni?,' 'Botsadivskyi,' 'Siaivo,' and 'Osoblyvyi Denysiuka'. These cultivars are sources of productivity and adaptability to abiotic factors of cultivation (winter and frost resistance, drought resistance). Abstract

Object GRB 221009A is the brightest gamma-ray burst (GRB) detected in more than 50 yr of study. In this paper, we present observations in the X-ray and optical domains obtained by the GRANDMA Collaboration and the Insight Collaboration. We study the optical afterglow with empirical fitting using the GRANDMA+HXMT-LE data sets augmented with data from the literature up to 60 days. We then model numerically using a Bayesian approach, and we find that the GRB afterglow, extinguished by a large dust column, is most likely behind a combination of a large Milky Way dust column and moderate low-metallicity dust in the host galaxy. Using the GRANDMA+HXMT-LE+XRT data set, we find that the simplest model, where the observed afterglow is produced by synchrotron radiation at the forward external shock during the deceleration of a top-hat relativistic jet by a uniform medium, fits the multiwavelength observations only moderately well, with a tension between the observed temporal and spectral evolution. This tension is confirmed when using the augmented data set. We find that the consideration of a jet structure (Gaussian or power law), the inclusion of synchrotron self-Compton emission, or the presence of an underlying supernova do not improve the predictions. Placed in the global context of GRB optical afterglows, we find that the afterglow of GRB 221009A is luminous but not extraordinarily so, highlighting that some aspects of this GRB do not deviate from the global known sample despite its extreme energetics and the peculiar afterglow evolution.

Abstract

The paper considers the origin of the Magnus force and torque in the course of the projectile flight; analytical dependencies for their determination are given and justified. The mutual orientation of the Magnus force and angular torque vectors with respect to those of the drag and lift forces, as well as with respect to the stalling, polar quenching and equatorial damping torques acting on the projectile in flight is discussed. The effect of the Magnus force and torque on the firing characteristics of artillery systems is assessed. A mathematical model of the projectile flight is presented, as well as constraints that are imposed on it and that do not considerably affect the accuracy of the description of the spatial motion of the projectile. The mathematical model is implemented programmatically on the basis of a standard subroutine for numerical integration of differential equations written in the Maple software and contains the motion equations for the projectile mass center, the motion equations with respect to the projectile mass center and equations that allow one to determine the coordinates of the projectile fall points in the base reference system. To assess the effect of Magnus force and torque on the projectile flight range, the difference method is employed, which consists in solving the system of differential equations of the spatial motion of the projectile such that changing the magnitude of the Magnus force and torque (at the assumption of the constancy of the aerodynamic forces and torques), one obtains the variation in the projectile flight range. A protocol and a scheme for assessing the effect of deviation of the projectile range on the accuracy of determination of the Magnus force strength and torque, as well as the results of numerical simulation of the deviation of the flight range for the ОФ-462Ж projectile of the 122-mm howitzer Д-30 depending on the accuracy of determination of aerodynamic force coefficients and Magnus torque are presented. It is shown that the largest deviations in the projectile flight range are observed when shooting at large launching angles and full charge (projectile speed 690 m / s); the smallest corresponding values are observed for the fourth charge (projectile speed 276 m / s) at small launching angles., В статті проведений аналіз виникнення сили та моменту сили Магнуса при польоті снаряда; наведені аналітичні залежності їх визначення. З використанням методу різниць проведена оцінка впливу сили та моменту сили Магнуса на характеристики стрільби артилерійських систем. Наведена математична модель польоту снаряда та представлені результати чисельного моделювання залежностей відхилення в дальності польоту снаряда ОФ-462Ж 122-мм гаубиці Д-30 від точності визначення аеродинамічних коефіцієнтів сили і моменту сили Магнуса. Показано, що найбільші відхилення в дальності польоту снаряда відбуваються при стрільбі на великих кутах кидання, при збільшенні швидкості польоту снаряда.

Abstract

On the basis of the analysis of the provisions of the governing documents on the concept, content, principles of logistical support for the activities of military formation, the need to develop methodological recommendations aimed at obtaining the expected result of the functioning of the logistics system for the minimum cost of resources, that is, solving the problem of determining the rational cost of resources for the implementation of logistics.The initial conditions, the content and mathematical model of the problem of determining the rational expenditure of resources are formulated, and the algorithm of its solution is developed based on the use of the step-by-step method.Indicators are proposed to evaluate the outcome of logistical support by applying an expert-analytical approach, which includes the justification of the scoring scale of the results of individual actions within the types of security and the criteria that they must meet, as well as the procedure for summarizing them to obtain an overall score of each type of security and logistics in general.The order of formation of dependence between the points of the rating scale and the necessary expenses for their maintenance is considered. For this purpose, on the basis of the formed evaluation criteria for each score by means of meaningful analysis, the list of necessary actions and, accordingly, the necessary resources for their fulfillment in cost dimension is determined.The procedure for determining the rational costs of logistical support is developed by using the step-by-step method, according to which within the limits of certain restrictions on the required results of logistical support and allocated resources, the maximum value of the logistical result is formulated sequentially by the next value in cost dimension (next step) overall, and the appropriate resource costs.Formed a graph of the relationship between the magnitudes of the results of logistics and costs, analyzes the possibility of its use., Сформульовано вихідні умови, змістовна та математична моделі задачі визначення раціональних витрат ресурсів на здійснення логістичного забезпечення військового формування. Вибрано метод і розроблено алгоритм розв’язання цієї задачі, проведено аналіз одержаних результатів.

Abstract

The paper considers the origin of the Magnus force and torque in the course of the projectile flight; analytical dependencies for their determination are given and justified. The mutual orientation of the Magnus force and angular torque vectors with respect to those of the drag and lift forces, as well as with respect to the stalling, polar quenching and equatorial damping torques acting on the projectile in flight is discussed. The effect of the Magnus force and torque on the firing characteristics of artillery systems is assessed. A mathematical model of the projectile flight is presented, as well as constraints that are imposed on it and that do not considerably affect the accuracy of the description of the spatial motion of the projectile. The mathematical model is implemented programmatically on the basis of a standard subroutine for numerical integration of differential equations written in the Maple software and contains the motion equations for the projectile mass center, the motion equations with respect to the projectile mass center and equations that allow one to determine the coordinates of the projectile fall points in the base reference system. To assess the effect of Magnus force and torque on the projectile flight range, the difference method is employed, which consists in solving the system of differential equations of the spatial motion of the projectile such that changing the magnitude of the Magnus force and torque (at the assumption of the constancy of the aerodynamic forces and torques), one obtains the variation in the projectile flight range. A protocol and a scheme for assessing the effect of deviation of the projectile range on the accuracy of determination of the Magnus force strength and torque, as well as the results of numerical simulation of the deviation of the flight range for the ОФ-462Ж projectile of the 122-mm howitzer Д-30 depending on the accuracy of determination of aerodynamic force coefficients and Magnus torque are presented, В статті проведений аналіз виникнення сили та моменту сили Магнуса при польоті снаряда; наведені аналітичні залежності їх визначення. З використанням методу різниць проведена оцінка впливу сили та моменту сили Магнуса на характеристики стрільби артилерійських систем. Наведена математична модель польоту снаряда та представлені результати чисельного моделювання залежностей відхилення в дальності польоту снаряда ОФ-462Ж 122-мм гаубиці Д-30 від точності визначення аеродинамічних коефіцієнтів сили і моменту сили Магнуса. Показано, що найбільші відхилення в дальності польоту снаряда відбуваються при стрільбі на великих кутах кидання, при збільшенні швидкості польоту снаряда.

Abstract

We present the Global Rapid Advanced Network Devoted to the Multi-messenger Addicts (GRANDMA). The network consists of 21 telescopes with both photometric and spectroscopic facilities. They are connected together thanks to a dedicated infrastructure. The network aims at coordinating the observations of large sky position estimates of transient events to enhance their follow-up and reduce the delay between the initial detection and optical confirmation. The GRANDMA programme mainly focuses on follow-up of gravitational-wave alerts to find and characterize the electromagnetic counterpart during the third observational campaign of the Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo detectors. But it allows for follow-up of any transient alerts involving neutrinos or gamma-ray bursts, even those with poor spatial localization. We present the different facilities, tools, and methods we developed for this network and show its efficiency using observations of LIGO/Virgo S190425z, a binary neutron star merger candidate.We furthermore report on allGRANDMAfollow-up observations performed during the first six months of the LIGO-Virgo observational campaign, and we derive constraints on the kilonova properties assuming that the events' locations were imaged by our telescopes. © 2019 The Author(s).

Abstract

The article presents the dynamics of social networks users increase, depending on the total world population from 2010 to 2018. It also identifies the most popular social networks in Ukraine. The systematic risk indicator of using social networks relative to the total number of Internet resources users is determined. Types of social intercourse in the process of the higher education institution image creation are presented. The peculiarities of using social networks in the formation of a positive image of an educational institution are highlighted. The statistical indicators of user actions in the official group of the Faculty of Mathematics and Information Technologies of Vasyl Stus Donetsk National University in January, February and March 2019 are presented, as well as the average attraction coefficient of users depending on the subject of publications. Abstract

Results from regular monitoring of relativistic compact binaries like PSR 1913+16 are consistent with the dominant (quadrupole) order emission of gravitational waves (GWs). We show that observations associated with the binary black hole (BBH) central engine of blazar OJ 287 demand the inclusion of gravitational radiation reaction effects beyond the quadrupolar order. It turns out that even the effects of certain hereditary contributions to GW emission are required to predict impact flare timings of OJ 287. We develop an approach that incorporates this effect into the BBH model for OJ 287. This allows us to demonstrate an excellent agreement between the observed impact flare timings and those predicted from ten orbital cycles of the BBH central engine model. The deduced rate of orbital period decay is nine orders of magnitude higher than the observed rate in PSR 1913+16, demonstrating again the relativistic nature of OJ 287's central engine. Finally, we argue that precise timing of the predicted 2019 impact flare should allow a test of the celebrated black hole "no-hair theorem" at the 10% level. © 2018.
