Abstract

Lead free calcium and zirconium co-doped barium titanate (Ba0.85Ca0.15Zr0.1Ti0.9)O3 (BCZT) ceramic has been prepared by conventional sol gel method. 50Ba0.7Ca0.3TiO3 –50BaZr0.2Ti0.8O3 [BCT-BZT] composite sample was prepared by mixing BCT and BZT powders in required stoichiometric concentration. The structural and micro structural analysis has been carried out by X-ray Diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images. Dielectric studies have been performed at room temperature and with temperature. Ferroelectric to paraelectric phase transitions has been observed in both ceramics. Higher values of dielectric parameters are obtained for co-doped BCZT as compared to its composite BCT-BZT. Further under the electric study, conduction mechanism for both ceramic study at room temperature and at different temperature. Activation energy is also calculated for both ceramics. Abstract

Ce 1 − x Pr x O2 (x = 0 , 0.02, 0.04, 0.06, and 0.08) nano-materials synthesized using co-precipitation method have been investigated mainly for electronic structure properties in this manuscript. Findings and supporting studies are presented to understand the role of valence states of host and dopant cations information of F + centers through X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Sustained cubic fluorite system confirmed by X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis and red-shifting of energy gap by UV–Vis spectroscopy in all the samples are our findings. Samples further implored by XPS indicate incidence of cerium and Pr cations in both the oxidation states of 4 + and 3 + , respectively. Finally, it has been observed that optical, electronic structure and magnetic properties of CeO2 nanomaterials can be modified by Pr-doping, promising better yield samples with good amount of ferromagnetism for potential uses in the technological applications like spintronics, optoelectronics, and photocatalytic. The electronic structure properties of co-precipitated undoped CeO2 and Ce 1 − x Pr x O2 (x = 0 , 0.02, 0.04, 0.06, and 0.08) nanoparticles are investigated using XPS techniques, and the role of valence states of dopant and host cations in the formation of F+-centers complex is discussed to explain the ferromagnetic behavior of these nanomaterials. Abstract

The present study reports the effect of Fe-doping on the structural, optical, magnetic and electronic properties of polycrystalline CeO2 (for 5 and 10% doping concentration of Fe-cation) samples synthesized by low-temperature solid-state reaction method. Rietveld refinement of the X-ray diffraction patterns establishes fluorite-type face-centred cubic structure of the Fe-doped CeO2 samples and also confirms successful incorporation of Fe ions in the CeO2 lattice. The UV-Vis-NIR absorption spectra displays reduce band gap energy with rising fluency of Fe-ions, which confirm red shifts in the Fe-doped CeO2 samples. The electronic structure of the pure CeO2 and Fe-doped CeO2 polycrystalline samples have been investigated by X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS). The XPS spectra of Ce 3d reveals the reduction of Ce4+ to Ce3+ states Fe-doped CeO2 samples, which are well supported by the Fe 2p and O 1s spectra. Pure polycrystalline CeO2 displays diamagnetic behaviour at room temperature. Interestingly, 5% Fe-doped CeO2 sample displays S-shape hysteresis loop and establishes room temperature ferromagnetism, whereas, 10% Fe-doped CeO2 sample shows weak ferromagnetic behaviour. A decrement is observed in the magnetization on increasing the doping concentration. The possible reason for ferromagnetism in the Fe-doped CeO2 samples may be incorporation of oxygen vacancies, which are further discussed using F-centre exchange mechanism and double exchange interaction. These experimental findings offer potential opportunities for spintronics and optoelectronics applications by integrating them into device structures and evaluating their performance as a function of their material properties. Abstract

Metronidazole, a 5-nitroimidazole drug has been reported to decrease testicular weight, testicular and epididymal spermatid counts and causes abnormal sperm morphology with degeneration of seminiferous tubules with 6 weeks treatment of metronidazole (400 mg/kg, day). In contrast to DNA flow cytometry (FCM), the histological and gravimetric parameters do not allow a rapid, sensitive, objective and multiparameteric evaluation of reproductive toxicants on spermatogenesis. Moreover, the exact mechanisms for such an effect are not entirely clear. The present study was therefore undertaken to assess the effects of intraperitoneal (i.p.) administration of metronidazole 400 mg/kg daily for 30 days on testicular germ cell changes assessed by DNA (FCM) and hormone levels of testosterone, FSH and LH in pre-pubertal rats. A significant reduction in the haploid cell population in metronidazole treated groups as compared to saline treated controls was observed. The mean serum FSH, LH and testosterone value were also lowered in treated animals. Thus, the spermatotoxic effects of metronidazole were probably mediated by decrease in the circulating hormones responsible for spermatogenesis.

Abstract

The Sargasso Sea is a fundamentally important part of the world’s ocean, located within the North Atlantic sub-tropical gyre with its boundaries defined by the surrounding currents. It is the only sea without land boundaries with water depths ranging from the surface coral reefs of Bermuda to abyssal plains at 4500 m. The Sargasso Sea’s importance derives from the interdependent mix of its physical structure and properties, its ecosystems, its role in global scale ocean and earth system processes, its socio-economic and cultural values, and its role in global scientific research. Despite this, the Sargasso Sea is threatened by a range of human activities that either directly adversely impact it or have the potential to do so. Being open ocean, the Sargasso Sea is part of the High Seas, the area of ocean that covers nearly 50% of the earth’s surface but which is beyond the jurisdiction and responsibility of any national government, and as such it enjoys little protection. To promote the importance of the Sargasso Sea, the Sargasso Sea Alliance was created under the leadership of the Government of Bermuda in 2010. This report provides a summary of the scientific and other supporting evidence for the importance of the Sargasso Sea and is intended to develop international recognition of this; to start the process of establishing appropriate management and precautionary regimes within existing agreements; and to stimulate a wider debate on appropriate management and protection for the High Seas. Nine reasons why the Sargasso Sea is important are described and discussed. It is a place of legend with a rich history of great importance to Bermuda; it has an iconic ecosystem based upon floating Sargassum, the world’s only holopelagic seaweed, hosting a rich and diverse community including ten endemic species; it provides essential habitat for nurturing a wide diversity of species many of which are endangered or threatened; it is the only breeding location for the threatened

Abstract

The present study is aimed to assess the therapeutic potential of sulfonylurea drug glimepiride in comparison with Nerium oleander plant extract on insulin, glucose levels and some liver enzymes activities in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats. Rats were rendered diabetic by intraperitoneal injection of a single dose of 50 mg kg-1 body weight streptozotocin. Rats with serum glucose levels >200 mg dL-1 were subdivided into three sub-groups: the first sub-group were remained without treatment and considered as diabetics. The second and third subgroups were orally administered 0.1 mg kg-1 body weight/day glimepiride and 250 mg kg-1 body weight/day Nerium oleander, respectively for 4 weeks. Streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats showed hypoinsulinemia and hyperglycemia compared to controls.
