Background: Postpartum depressive (PPD) symptoms in mothers of preterm NICU infants are a health crisis. Mothers are at risk for mental suffering and infants are at risk for negatively altered development. Purpose: To investigate relationships between mothers' PPD symptoms and parent - infant contact in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). Methods: Design: mixed- methods, sequential, explanatory study Participants: Convenience sample: 26 NICU mothers of infants 28-32 6/7 weeks. Setting: 2 level IV NICUs. Data Collection: The Postpartum Depression Screening Scale (PDSS) administered at 14 and 28 postnatal days of life to measure PPD symptoms. Parent-infant contact recorded for 4 weeks. A qualitative interview was conducted with mother on day of life 28. Analysis: Descriptive statistics: demographic data, parent-infant contact, PDSS scores; correlations: parent-infant contact with PDSS scores; Krippendorff's content analysis: interviews. Results: Mothers: 31.2 ± (SD 6) years, infants: 30.6 ± (SD 1.6) weeks; mothers had overall more contact with infant than fathers; hours of maternal and paternal contact were significantly correlated: (r = .424 - .810; p < .05 - < .001); types of maternal and paternal contacts were significantly correlated: (r = .499 - .658; p < .05 -< .01); 70% of mothers had elevated PDSS scores at 14 and 28 days. Younger maternal age and less education was significantly correlated with higher PDSS subscale scores; maternal diaper changing and paternal holding and skin-to-skin were significantly correlated with PDSS scores. Combined maternal-paternal infant contacts were significantly correlated with PDSS subscale scores. Qualitative themes independent of PDSS scores: contact with infant, infant itself, NICU staff, mother herself, support, and NICU environment. Conclusions/Implications: NICU mothers are suffering from elevated PPD symptoms. Several maternalY paternal-infant contacts indicate strong relationships to PPD symptoms. Implications: Research needs to focus on NICU maternal PPD symptoms and the impact of parental-infant contacts. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This special issue of Information, Communication, and Society (ICS) is edited by the Communication, Information Technologies, and Media Sociology (CITAMS) section of the American Sociological Association and includes papers that were first presented at either the 2021 or 2022 ASA meetings or Media Sociology Symposia. For this special issue, an innovative editorial approach was taken that brought the editing process into a graduate classroom. That process is described below along with a brief introduction to themes of the selected articles. Objective Maternal skin-to-skin contact (M-SSC) has been found to reduce adverse consequences of prematurity, however, its neurobiological mechanisms have been unknown. The purpose of the study was to examine oxytocin mechanism in modulating parental stress and anxiety during M-SSC and P-SSC (paternal SSC) with their pre-term infants. Methods Twenty-eight stable pre-term infants and their parents (triads) were recruited in a 2-day cross-over study and 26 mothers and 19 fathers completed the study protocol. Each triad was randomly assigned to one of the two sequences: M-SSC was conducted on day-1 and P-SSC on day-2; and P-SSC on day-1 and M-SSC on day-2. Parents' saliva samples for oxytocin and cortisol assays and visual analog anxiety levels were collected pre-SSC, 30-min during-SSC, and 30-min post-SSC. Results Both maternal and paternal oxytocin levels were significantly increased during-SSC from baseline. Maternal oxytocin dropped post-M-SSC, but paternal oxytocin continued to be maintained at a higher level during post-P-SSC. Both maternal and paternal cortisol levels significantly decreased during-SSC from baseline. Maternal cortisol continuously dropped post-M-SSC, but paternal cortisol increased post-P-SSC. Both mothers' and fathers' anxiety levels decreased during-SSC from baseline, and then increased post-SSC. Mother–father dyads also showed correlated or synchronized stress and anxiety responses in the NICU. Conclusion M-SSC and P-SSC activated the oxytocin release and reduced stress and anxiety responses in mothers and fathers of pre-term infants. Practice implications SSC plays a positive role in early post-partum period and patterns of maternal and paternal bio-behavioral responses to SSC with pre-term infants might be different.
