Abstract

Background: The eye is an important sensory organ occupationally exposed to ionizing radiation (IR) in healthcare workers (HCWs) engaged in medical imaging (MI). New evidence highlights the possible induction of cataract at IR exposure levels to be much lower than expected in the past. Objective: Conduct an updated review on the current evidence on cataract risk in healthcare workers exposed to IR. Methods: Published scientific studies on cataract risk in IR exposed healthcare workers were collected through a systematic search of two biomedical databases (MEDLINE and Scopus). Data from included studies was extracted and summarized. Study quality was also assessed. Results: All 21 eligible studies reported an increased prevalence of cataract, especially posterior subcapsular cataract, in IR exposed HCWs with a higher prevalence in interventional cardiology staff. Discussion: Our review synthesizes the latest evidence to support the hypothesis of a significantly increased risk of occupational cataract in healthcare workers operating MI and exposed to IR, especially in interventional cardiologists. Data also support a dose-response relationship between IR exposure and the prevalence of opacities, especially posterior subcapsular opacities. Conclusions: Findings highlight the need for effective control measures including appropriate training, adherence to protective procedures, and a constant use of shields and eye personal protective equipment in healthcare workers with optical exposure to IR. Periodic health surveillance programs, possibly including lens evaluation, are also important to monitor cataract risk in these MI operators.

Abstract

Citrus fragrances have been used in aromatherapy for the treatment of anxiety, and the essential oil of Citrus sinensis (sweet orange) has shown promising results, although its mechanism of action was not known. The objective of this study was to evaluate the involvement of nitric oxide (NO) neurotransmission in the anxiolytic-like effect of C. sinensis essential oil. Swiss male mice were submitted to 15 min of C. sinensis essential oil inhalation (1%, 2.5%, 5%, and 10%) and tested in the marble-burying test, neophobia-induced hypophagia, and light/dark test. Locomotor activity was evaluated in an automated locomotor activity box. The coadministration of C. sinensis essential oil with L-arginine (200 mg/kg, i.p.), an NO precursor, was used for the behavioral evaluation of nitrergic system mediation. Additionally, the NO synthase activity was measured by nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate diaphorase (NADPH-d) analysis in the cerebral cortex. C. sinensis essential oil exerted anxiolytic-like effect at dose that did not change locomotor activity. Moreover, L-arginine pretreatment prevented this anxiolytic-like effect on marble-burying test. Finally, C. sinensis essential oil reduced the NADPH-d positive cells. Thus, the nitrergic neurotransmission plays a relevant role in the anxiolytic-like effect C. sinensis essential oil. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

O Nordeste é a principal região produtora de melão do País, contribuindo com mais de 90% da produção nacional. Entretanto, o “amarelão do meloeiro”, doença associada à presença de um novo vírus, o Melon yellowing-associated virus (MYaV), vem afetando a cultura desde 1999. Este trabalho teve como objetivo detectar a ocorrência do MYaV em meloeiros exibindo sintomas suspeitos da doença nos estados que são os maiores produtores da Região Nordeste. Em novembro de 2007, plantios comerciais de melão foram inspecionados para avaliar a ocorrência do “amarelão”. Um total de 374 plantas foi coletado em áreas produtoras dos estados do RN (54) e CE (37) e também, do Submédio do Vale do São Francisco (283), situado nos Estados da BA e PE. A detecção do MYaV nas amostras foi realizada por DAS-Elisa utilizando-se anticorpos policlonais desenvolvidos pela Embrapa Hortaliças. Extratos preparados a partir de folhas e de hastes das plantas coletadas foram utilizados como antígeno. O MYaV foi detectado em 58,0% do total de plantas avaliadas, sendo que a concentração viral foi maior em hastes do que em folhas. A quantidade de plantas infectadas foi maior em amostras coletadas no RN (96,3%) e CE (75,7%) que no Submédio do Vale do São Francisco (PE e BA, com 48,4%). Estes resultados revelaram a ampla disseminação do MYaV nas principais áreas produtoras de melão da Região Nordeste e demonstraram a eficiência dos anticorpos na detecção viral.

Abstract

The use of reference materials (RMs) and certified reference materials (CRMs) is essential to guarantee the reliability of measurement procedures ‐ a major factor motivating the efforts of the geoanalytical community. This work quantifies trends and patterns in the scientific literature concerning RMs and CRMs in geochemistry for specific timespans, with the aim of evaluating historical developments, research fields, geographic shifts of research centres, and current trends. The Scopus database was surveyed for peer‐reviewed full‐texts (14,201 documents), which were subsequently exploited for statistical description, bibliometric mapping and cluster analysis. Mineral exploration and trace element geochemistry stimulated early research, whereas environmental subjects have grown in importance mainly since the year 2000. International standardisation was coincident with an increase of publications covering CRMs and geochemistry, and is thought to reflect the impact of ISO guidelines in this scientific activity. Other factors include investments in research facilities, creation of specialised geoanalytical journals and organisation of international meetings. The analysis shows that RMs are typically used for petrogenetic research topics, whereas CRMs are equally important for environmental sciences, chemistry and geosciences. Environmental sciences are mostly concerned with anthropogenic contamination of ecosystems by heavy metals, whereas geological interest is mainly driven by isotope geochemistry. Scientific frontiers in geoanalytical research comprise microanalytical methodologies, unconventional isotopes, rare earth elements and environmental monitoring. Abstract

Here we report that aloe-emodin (AE), a hydroxyanthraquinone present in Aloe vera leaves, has a specific in vitro and in vivo antineuroectodermal tumor activity. The growth of human neuroectodermal tumors is inhibited in mice with severe combined immunodeficiency without any appreciable toxic effects on the animals. The compound does not inhibit the proliferation of normal fibroblasts nor that of hemopoietic progenitor cells. The cytotoxicity mechanism consists of the induction of apoptosis, whereas the selectivity against neuroectodermal tumor cells is founded on a specific energy-dependent pathway of drug incorporation. Taking into account its unique cytotoxicity profile and mode of action, AE might represent a conceptually new lead antitumor drug.

Abstract

The present paper deals with the preliminary design of a general aviation Commuter 11 seat aircraft. The Commuter aircraft market is today characterized by very few new models and the majority of aircraft in operation belonging to this category are older than 35 years. Tecnam Aircraft Industries and the Department of Aerospace Engineering (DIAS) of the University of Naples "Federico II" are deeply involved in the design of a new commuter aircraft that should be introduced in this market with very good opportunities of success. This paper aims to provide some guidelines on the conception of a new twin-engine commuter aircraft with eleven passengers. Aircraft configuration and cabin layouts choices are shown, also compared to the main competitors. The research activity also deals with the aerodynamic design that has been performed at DIAS during 2011 and it was focused on a general aerodynamic analysis and a deep investigation on some particular effects (such as the wing-fuselage interference or the nacelle lift contribution and their effect on wing span loading). The aerodynamic analysis was also essential to have an accurate estimation of aircraft stability and control derivatives (both longitudinal and lateral-directional) and to lead to a right sizing of tail surfaces. The aerodynamic analysis have been carried out through the use of a 3-D panel code internally developed and the aerodynamic analysis performed through 3-D panel code calculations have been also supported by semi-empirical estimation methodologies. Design of winglets to improve climb performance will be presented.

Abstract

The paper presents wind-tunnel tests and CFD numerical aerodynamic analysis of Tecnam P2012 Traveller aircraft. An extensive wind tunnel tests campaign of several different modular aircraft configurations analyzed has been performed on a scaled model in order to experimentally estimate both longitudinal and lateral-directional stability, control derivatives, and to improve the aircraft aerodynamic performances. Simultaneously numerical investigations through a CFD software has been performed, both at wind-tunnel tests Reynolds number (Re=0.6millions) and at free flight Reynolds number of the full scale aircraft (Re=4 or 9 millions). Finally results are compared showing a good agreement in the lift and pitching moment coefficient both with and without control surfaces or flap deflections, and an underestimation of drag coefficient in the CFD numerical analysis. Horizontal tail positions are also tested in wind-tunnel and compared to CFD analysis highlighting how an accurate design leads to improvement both in stability and control. Results will be very useful in the final design of the aircraft and to perform dynamic simulations.

Abstract

Experimental results of triaxial tests performed on unsaturated soil samples of statically compacted Boom clay are presented. Boom clay samples we re subjected to radial stress paths at two different constant water contents: w= 15%, the as-compacted one, and w= 18%, achieved by vapour transfer technique from the as-compacted condition. The dependence of volumetric compliance on the stress ratio and on the water content is evidenced. The results of the experimental investigation are interpreted in terms of anisotropy of the mechanical response, as a consequence of the induced anisotropy during static compaction, and in terms of the dependence of the compressibility on the micro-fabric of the material. The intrinsic link between the phenomenological soil behaviour and the evolution of its fabric is evidenced, and a normalising variable to take it into account at the constitutive level is proposed.

Abstract

In this contribution, new data concerning the distribution of native vascular flora in Italy are presented. Abstract

The economic cuts suffered by public health have in many cases led to the reduction of beds. In order to optimize the available resources, the length of stay (LOS) can be used as an efficiency parameter. The objective of this study is to predict the value of LOS using the clinical information that is generally supplied by a patient who is hospitalized following a fracture of the neck of the femur and to make a comparison with results obtained after the implementation of the new diagnostic-therapeutic-assistance pathway (DTAP). The analysis was conducted on data extrapolated from the information system of the University Hospital “San Giovanni di Dio and Ruggi d’Aragona” of Salerno (Italy). The results show promising outcome in the use of the proposed prediction models as a tool for determining an estimate of the LOS and support the decision making process and the management of hospital resources in advance. In addition, the comparison of between the two models can be used as an indicator to assess the efficiency of the implemented DTAP.

Abstract

During the period January 2004 to December 2005 four different ostrich farms were investigated to evaluate the presence of thermotolerant Campylobacter. A total of 150 ostriches were examined and all were found to be clinically healthy. Campylobacter spp. were isolated from 60/150 cloacal swabs. Among the isolates, 48 were identified as Campylobacter jejuni whereas the remainder were identified as Campylobacter coli. Campylobacter lari was not isolated. The ostriches, although apparently in a healthy body condition, can be considered, theoretically, as potential Campylobacter carriers.

Abstract

Adenovirus (AdV), enterovirus (EV), genogroup A rotaviruses (GARV) and Torque teno virus (TTV) are non-enveloped viral agents excreted in feces and so may contaminate water bodies. In the present study, the molecular detection of these viruses was performed in samples of surface water collected from the Arroio Dilúvio, a waterstream that crosses the city of Porto Alegre, RS, Brazil, receiving great volumes of non-treated sewage from a large urban area. Sampling was performed during 2009, in three different occasions (January, April and September). The highest detection rate was observed for EV (64.28%), followed by TTV (28.57%) and AdV (21.43%). Rotaviruses were not detected. More than on kind of tested virus was detected in five (35. 71%) of 14 samples. January was the month with the highest viral detection rate, being all samples, collected in this month, positive for at least one group of tested virus. The correlation between the detection of these different viral agents and environmental factors is discussed. To the knowledge of the authors, this is the first description of viral genomes in water samples taken from the Arroio Dilúvio, Porto Alegre (Brazil).
