One of the prominent decay modes of heavy nuclei which are produced in astrophysical environments at temperatures of the order of $10^9$ K is the $\alpha$ ($^4$He) decay. Thermally enhanced $\alpha$ decay rates are evaluated within the standard scheme of a tunneling decay where the $\alpha$ particle tunnels through the potential barrier formed by its interaction with the daughter nucleus. Following the observation that there exist several excited levels with the possibility of an $\alpha$ decay when the daughter nucleus is at a shell closure, we focus in particular on decays producing daughter nuclei with the neutron number, N = 126. Within a statistical approach we find that the half-lives, $t_{1/2}(T)$, for temperatures ranging from $T$ = 0 to 2.4 GK can decrease by 1 - 2 orders of magnitude with the exception of the decay of $^{212}$Po which decays to the doubly magic daughter $^{208}$Pb, where $t_{1/2}(T)$ decreases by 5 orders of magnitude. The effect of these thermally enhanced $\alpha$ decays on the $r$-process nucleosynthesis can be significant in view of the mass build up at the waiting point nuclei with closed neutron shells., Comment: 18 pages, 1 figure

It is common to study the strong decay of a heavy nucleus as a tunneling phenomenon where the $\alpha$ ($^4$He) or a light nuclear cluster tunnels through the Coulomb barrier formed by its interaction with the heavier daughter nucleus. The position and width of the Coulomb barrier are determined by the total interaction potential between the two daughter nuclei. We examine the effects of including nonlocality and deformation in the interaction potential by calculating the half-lives, $t_{1/2}$, and thereby phenomenological preformation factors of several nuclei which have the possibility of decaying by emitting either an $\alpha$ or a light nuclear cluster. The effect of deformation manifests itself by a decrease in $t_{1/2}$ for all the decays studied. The effect of nonlocality is studied within two different models of the nuclear potential: the energy-independent but angular momentum ($l$) dependent Mumbai (M) potential and the energy-dependent Perey-Buck (PB) potential. The nonlocal nuclear interaction leads to a decrease in all half-lives studied. Though the decrease is larger due to the Perey-Buck potential, half-lives evaluated using the Mumbai potential show a strong sensitivity to the $l$ value in the decay. This feature of the $\alpha$ and cluster decay half-lives can provide a complementary tool in addition to scattering data which are more commonly used to fix the parameters of a nonlocal potential in literature., Comment: 19 pages, 5 figures

In this work, starting from a spherically symmetric polytropic black hole, a rotating solution is obtained by following the Newman--Janis algorithm without complexification. Besides studying the horizon, the static conditions and causality issues of the rotating solution, we obtain and discuss the shape of its shadow. Different models for the nonlocal description of the nuclear interaction are compared through a study of their effects on the half-lives of radioactive nuclei decaying by the emission of alpha particles. The half-lives are evaluated by considering a pre-formed alpha particle ($^4$He nucleus) which tunnels through the Coulomb barrier generated by its interaction with the daughter nucleus. An effective potential obtained from a density dependent double folding strong potential between the alpha and the daughter nucleus within the nonlocal framework is found to decrease the half-lives as compared to those in the absence of nonlocalities. Whereas the percentage decrease within the older Perey-Buck and S\~ao Paulo models ranges between 20 to 40\% for medium to heavy nuclei, a recently proposed effective potential leads to a decrease of only 2 - 4 \%. In view of these results, we provide a closer examination of the approximations used in deriving the local equivalent potentials and propose that apart from the scattering data, the alpha decay half-lives could be used as a complementary tool for constraining the nonlocality models., Comment: 10 pages, 2 figures

In this paper, we present the classical Bondi accretion theory for the case of non-isothermal accretion processes onto a supermassive black hole (SMBH), including the effects of X-ray heating and the radiation force due to electron scattering and spectral lines. The radiation field is calculated by considering an optically thick, geometrically thin, standard accretion disk as the emitter of UV photons and a spherical central object as a source of X-ray emission. In the present analysis, the UV emission from the accretion disk is assumed to have an angular dependence, while the X-ray/central object radiation is assumed to be isotropic. This allows us to build streamlines in any angular direction we need to. The influence of both types of radiation is evaluated for different flux fractions of the X-ray and UV emissions with and without the effects of spectral line driving. We find that the radiation emitted near the SMBH interacts with the infalling matter and modifies the accretion dynamics. In the presence of line driving, a transition resembles from pure type 1 & 2 to type 5 solutions (see Fig2.1 of Frank etal. 2002), which takes place regardless of whether or not the UV emission dominates over the X-ray emission. We compute the radiative factors at which this transition occurs, and discard type 5 solution from all our models. Estimated values of the accretion radius and accretion rate in terms of the classical Bondi values are also given. In this work we study steady and spherical relativistic dust accretion onto a static and spherically symmetric scale--dependent black hole. In particular we consider a polytropic scale--dependent black hole as a central object and obtain that the radial velocity profile and the energy density are affected when scale--dependence of the central object is taken into account and such a deviation is controlled by the so called running parameters of the scale--dependence models., Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures

We present three-dimensional calculations of spherically symmetric Bondi accretion onto a stationary supermassive black hole (SMBH) of mass $10^{8}$ $M_{\odot}$ within a radial range of $0.02-10$ pc, using a modified version of the smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) \gad \sp code, which ensures approximate first-order consistency (i.e., second-order accuracy) for the particle approximation. First-order consistency is restored by allowing the number of neighbours, $n_{\rm neigh}$, and the smoothing length, $h$, to vary with the total number of particles, $N$, such that the asymptotic limits $n_{\rm neigh}\to\infty$ and $h\to 0$ hold as $N\to\infty$. The ability of the method to reproduce the isothermal ($\gamma =1$) and adiabatic ($\gamma =5/3$) Bondi accretion is investigated with increased spatial resolution. In particular, for the isothermal models the numerical radial profiles closely match the Bondi solution, except near the accretor, where the density and radial velocity are slightly underestimated. However, as $n_{\rm neigh}$ is increased and $h$ is decreased, the calculations approach first-order consistency and the deviations from the Bondi solution decrease. The density and radial velocity profiles for the adiabatic models are qualitatively similar to those for the isothermal Bondi accretion. Steady-state Bondi accretion is reproduced by the highly resolved consistent models with a percent relative error of $\lesssim 1$\% for $\gamma =1$ and $\sim 9$\% for $\gamma =5/3$, with the adiabatic accretion taking longer than the isothermal case to reach steady flow. We study the consistency and convergence of smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH), as a function of the interpolation parameters, namely the number of particles $N$, the number of neighbors $n$, and the smoothing length $h$, using simulations of the collapse and fragmentation of protostellar rotating cores. The calculations are made using a modified version of the GADGET-2 code that employs an improved scheme for the artificial viscosity and power-law dependences of $n$ and $h$ on $N$, as was recently proposed by Zhu et al., which comply with the combined limit $N\to\infty$, $h\to 0$, and $n\to\infty$ with $n/N\to 0$ for full SPH consistency, as the domain resolution is increased. We apply this realization to the "standard isothermal test case" in the variant calculated by Burkert & Bodenheimer and the Gaussian cloud model of Boss to investigate the response of the method to adaptive smoothing lengths in the presence of large density and pressure gradients. The degree of consistency is measured by tracking how well the estimates of the consistency integral relations reproduce their continuous counterparts. In particular, $C^{0}$ and $C^{1}$ particle consistency is demonstrated, meaning that the calculations are close to second-order accuracy. As long as $n$ is increased with $N$, mass resolution also improves as the minimum resolvable mass $M_{\rm min}\sim n^{-1}$. This aspect allows proper calculation of small-scale structures in the flow associated with the formation and instability of protostellar disks around the growing fragments, which are seen to develop a spiral structure and fragment into close binary/multiple systems as supported by recent observations., Comment: 34 pages, 15 figures, ApJ in press

We report on the performance of the statistical, X-ray absorption lines identification procedure XLINE-ID. As illustration, it is used to estimate the time averaged gas density $n_H(r)$ of a representative AGN's warm absorber ($T\approx 10^5$~K) X-ray simulated spectrum. The method relies on three key ingredients: (1) a well established emission continuum level; (2) a robust grid of photoionisation models spanning several orders of magnitude in gas density ($n_H$), plasma column density ($N_H$), and in ionization states; (3) theoretical curves of growth for a large set of atomic lines. By comparing theoretical and observed equivalent widths of a large set of lines, spanning highly ionized charge states from O, Ne, Mg, Si, S, Ar, and the Fe L-shell and K-shell, we are able to infer the location of the X-ray warm absorber., Comment: 18 pages, 10 figures. Eight X-ray observations of V4743 Sgr (2002), observed with Chandra and XMM-Newton are presented. The nova turned off some time between days 301.9 and 371, and the X-ray flux subsequently decreased from day 301.9 to 526 following an exponential decline time scale of $(96 \pm 3)$ days. We use the absorption lines present in the SSS spectrum for diagnostic purposes, and characterize the physics and the dynamics of the expanding atmosphere during the explosion of the nova. The information extracted from this first stage is then used as input for computing full photoionization models of the ejecta in V4743 Sgr. The SSS spectrum is modeled with a simple black-body and multiplicative Gaussian lines, which provides us of a general kinematical picture of the system, before it decays to its faint phase (Ness et al. 2003). In the grating spectra taken between days 180.4 and 370, we can resolve the line profiles of absorption lines arising from H-like and He-like C, N, and O, including transitions involving higher principal quantum numbers. Except for a few interstellar lines, all lines are significantly blue-shifted, yielding velocities between 1000 and 6000 km/s which implies an ongoing mass loss. It is shown that significant expansion and mass loss occur during this phase of the explosion, at a rate $\dot{M} \approx (3-5) \times 10^{-4} ~ (\frac{L}{L_{38}}) ~ M_{\odot}/yr$. Our measurements show that the efficiency of the amount of energy used for the motion of the ejecta, defined as the ratio between the kinetic luminosity $L_{\rm kin}$ and the radiated luminosity $L_{\rm rad}$, is of the order of one., Comment: 25 pages, 9 figures. We present measurements of $\nu_{\mu}$ charged-current cross section ratios on carbon, iron, and lead relative to a scintillator (CH) using the fine-grained MINERvA detector exposed to the NuMI neutrino beam at Fermilab. The measurements utilize events of energies $2=8~GeV$, which have a reconstructed $\mu^{-}$ scattering angle less than $17^\circ$ to extract ratios of inclusive total cross sections as a function of neutrino energy $E_{\nu}$ and flux-integrated differential cross sections with respect to the Bjorken scaling variable $x$. These results provide the first high-statistics direct measurements of nuclear effects in neutrino scattering using different targets in the same neutrino beam. Measured cross section ratios exhibit a relative depletion at low $x$ and enhancement at large $x$. Both become more pronounced as the nucleon number of the target nucleus increases. The data are not reproduced by GENIE, a conventional neutrino-nucleus scattering simulation, or by the alternative models for the nuclear dependence of inelastic scattering that are considered., Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures, 7 pages of supplemental material. The MINERvA experiment is designed to perform precision studies of neutrino-nucleus scattering using $\nu_\mu$ and ${\bar\nu}_\mu$ neutrinos incident at 1-20 GeV in the NuMI beam at Fermilab. This article presents a detailed description of the \minerva detector and describes the {\em ex situ} and {\em in situ} techniques employed to characterize the detector and monitor its performance. The detector is comprised of a finely-segmented scintillator-based inner tracking region surrounded by electromagnetic and hadronic sampling calorimetry. The upstream portion of the detector includes planes of graphite, iron and lead interleaved between tracking planes to facilitate the study of nuclear effects in neutrino interactions. Observations concerning the detector response over sustained periods of running are reported. The detector design and methods of operation have relevance to future neutrino experiments in which segmented scintillator tracking is utilized.

We report a study of muon neutrino charged-current quasi-elastic events in the segmented scintillator inner tracker of the MINERvA experiment running in the NuMI neutrino beam at Fermilab. The events were selected by requiring a {\mu}^- and low calorimetric recoil energy separated from the interaction vertex. We measure the flux-averaged differential cross-section, d{\sigma}/dQ^2, and study the low energy particle content of the final state. Deviations are found between the measured d{\sigma}/dQ^2 and the expectations of a model of independent nucleons in a relativistic Fermi gas. We also observe an excess of energy near the vertex consistent with multiple protons in the final state., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures. We have isolated muon anti-neutrino charged-current quasi-elastic interactions occurring in the segmented scintillator tracking region of the MINERvA detector running in the NuMI neutrino beam at Fermilab. We measure the flux-averaged differential cross-section, d{\sigma}/dQ^2, and compare to several theoretical models of quasi-elastic scattering. Good agreement is obtained with a model where the nucleon axial mass, M_A, is set to 0.99 GeV/c^2 but the nucleon vector form factors are modified to account for the observed enhancement, relative to the free nucleon case, of the cross-section for the exchange of transversely polarized photons in electron-nucleus scattering. Our data at higher Q^2 favor this interpretation over an alternative in which the axial mass is increased., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures. Beams of neutrinos have been proposed as a vehicle for communications under unusual circumstances, such as direct point-to-point global communication, communication with submarines, secure communications and interstellar communication. We report on the performance of a low-rate communications link established using the NuMI beam line and the MINERvA detector at Fermilab.
