New particle formation (NPF) in the tropical free troposphere (FT) is a globally important source of cloud condensation nuclei, affecting cloud properties and climate. Oxidized organic molecules (OOMs) produced from biogenic volatile organic compounds are believed to contribute to aerosol formation in the tropical FT, but without direct chemical observations. We performed in situ molecular-level OOMs measurements at the Bolivian station Chacaltaya at 5240 m above sea level, on the western edge of Amazonia. For the first time, we demonstrate the presence of OOMs, mainly with 4-5 carbon atoms, in both gas-phase and particle-phase (in terms of mass contribution) measurements in tropical FT air from Amazonia. These observations, combined with air mass history analyses, indicate that the observed OOMs are linked to isoprene emitted from the rainforests hundreds of kilometers away. Based on particle-phase measurements, we find that these compounds can contribute to NPF, at least the growth of newly formed nanoparticles, in the tropical FT on a continental scale. Thus, our study is a fundamental and significant step in understanding the aerosol formation process in the tropical FT. In-situ molecular-level measurements demonstrate the presence of oxidized organic molecules, mainly with 4-5 carbon atoms, in both gas-phase and particle-phase in tropical free troposphere air from Amazonia. These molecules are linked to isoprene emitted from the rainforests hundreds of kilometers away, and can contribute to new particle formation.

The chemical composition of PM10 and non-overlapping PM2.5 was studied at the summit of Mt. Chacaltaya (5380 m a.s.l., lat. −16.346950°, long. −68.128250°) providing a unique long-term record spanning from December 2011 to March 2020. The chemical composition of aerosol at the Chacaltaya Global Atmosphere Watch (GAW) site is representative of the regional background, seasonally affected by biomass burning practices and by nearby anthropogenic emissions from the metropolitan area of La Paz–El Alto. Concentration levels are clearly influenced by seasons with minima occurring during the wet season (December to March) and maxima occurring during the dry and transition seasons (April to November). Ions, total carbon (EC + OC), and saccharide interquartile ranges for concentrations are 558–1785, 384–1120, and 4.3–25.5 ng m−3 for bulk PM10 and 917–2308, 519–1175, and 3.9–24.1 ng m−3 for PM2.5, respectively, with most of the aerosol seemingly present in the PM2.5 fraction. Such concentrations are overall lower compared to other high-altitude stations around the globe but higher than Amazonian remote sites (except for OC). For PM10, there is dominance of insoluble mineral matter (33 %–56 % of the mass), organic matter (7 %–34 %), and secondary inorganic aerosol (15 %–26 %). Dimethyl sulfide (DMS) is the primary natural contributor to the atmospheric sulfur burden. Observations concerning the fate of DMS oxidation products after long-range transport in the remote free troposphere are, however, sparse. Here we present quantitative chemical ionization mass spectrometric measurements of DMS and its oxidation products sulfuric acid (H2SO4), methanesulfonic acid (MSA), dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO), dimethylsulfone (DMSO2), methanesulfinic acid (MSIA), methyl thioformate (MTF), methanesulfenic acid (MSEA, CH3SOH), and a compound of the likely structure CH3S(O)2OOH in the gas phase, as well as measurements of the sulfate and methanesulfonate aerosol mass fractions. The measurements were performed at the Global Atmosphere Watch (GAW) station Chacaltaya in the Bolivian Andes located at 5240 m above sea level (a.s.l.). DMS and DMS oxidation products are brought to the Andean high-altitude station by Pacific air masses during the dry season after convective lifting over the remote Pacific ocean to 6000–8000 m a.s.l. and subsequent long-range transport in the free troposphere (FT). Most of the DMS reaching the station is already converted to the rather unreactive sulfur reservoirs DMSO2 in the gas phase and methanesulfonate (MS−) in the particle phase, which carried nearly equal amounts of sulfur to the station. The particulate sulfate at Chacaltaya is however dominated by regional volcanic emissions during the time of the measurement and not significantly affected by the marine air masses. In one of the FT events, even some DMS was observed next to reactive intermediates such as methyl thioformate, dimethylsulfoxide, and methanesulfinic acid. Also for this event, back trajectory calculations show that the air masses came from above the ocean (distance >330 km) with no local surface contacts. Abstract. Aerosol particles are a complex component of the atmospheric system which influence climate directly by interacting with solar radiation, and indirectly by contributing to cloud formation. The variety of their sources, as well as the multiple transformations they may undergo during their transport (including wet and dry deposition), result in significant spatial and temporal variability of their properties. Documenting this variability is essential to provide a proper representation of aerosols and cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) in climate models. Using measurements conducted in 2016 or 2017 at 62 ground-based stations around the world, this study provides the most up-to-date picture of the spatial distribution of particle number concentration (Ntot) and number size distribution (PNSD, from 39 sites). A sensitivity study was first performed to assess the impact of data availability on Ntot's annual and seasonal statistics, as well as on the analysis of its diel cycle. Thresholds of 50 % and 60 % were set at the seasonal and annual scale, respectively, for the study of the corresponding statistics, and a slightly higher coverage (75 %) was required to document the diel cycle. Although some observations are common to a majority of sites, the variety of environments characterizing these stations made it possible to highlight contrasting findings, which, among other factors, seem to be significantly related to the level of anthropogenic influence. The concentrations measured at polar sites are the lowest (∼ 102 cm−3) and show a clear seasonality, which is also visible in the shape of the PNSD, while diel cycles are in general less evident, due notably to the absence of a regular day–night cycle in some seasons. In contrast, the concentrations characteristic of urban environments are the highest (∼ 103–104 cm−3) and do not show pronounced seasonal variations, whereas diel cycles tend to be very regular over the year at these stations. Aerosol particles are essential constituents of the Earth's atmosphere, impacting the earth radiation balance directly by scattering and absorbing solar radiation, and indirectly by acting as cloud condensation nuclei. In contrast to most greenhouse gases, aerosol particles have short atmospheric residence times, resulting in a highly heterogeneous distribution in space and time. There is a clear need to document this variability at regional scale through observations involving, in particular, the in situ near-surface segment of the atmospheric observation system. This paper will provide the widest effort so far to document variability of climate-relevant in situ aerosol properties (namely wavelength dependent particle light scattering and absorption coefficients, particle number concentration and particle number size distribution) from all sites connected to the Global Atmosphere Watch network. High-quality data from almost 90 stations worldwide have been collected and controlled for quality and are reported for a reference year in 2017, providing a very extended and robust view of the variability of these variables worldwide. The range of variability observed worldwide for light scattering and absorption coefficients, single-scattering albedo, and particle number concentration are presented together with preliminary information on their long-term trends and comparison with model simulation for the different stations. The scope of the present paper is also to provide the necessary suite of information, including data provision procedures, quality control and analysis, data policy, and usage of the ground-based aerosol measurement network. It delivers to users of the World Data Centre on Aerosol, the required confidence in data products in the form of a fully characterized value chain, including uncertainty estimation and requirements for contributing to the global climate monitoring system.

Objective: to describe availability of pediatric cardiovascular surgeons and to identify factors influencing accreditation for this specialty in Peru. Materials and methods: this is a cross-sectional and descriptive study. A discriminating exponential snowball sampling procedure was performed in pediatric cardiovascular surgeons working in the Peruvian National Cardiovascular Institute. This was carried out in April 2019. Their participation was requested and virtual surveys were carried out. Data collected from closed questions were processed using descriptive statistics. Data from open questions were processed on the basis of their systematization, order, and relationship, so conclusions could be drawn. Results: twenty surgeons were surveyed. Of them, 5 reported having had training for their subspecialty, and they declared their main motivation was having undergone a training period during pregraduate or specialty studies, as well as their interest in surgery. Three accredited subspecialists declared they wanted to formalize their practice in Peru, and the other two declared not having formalized their training because of lack of time. Also, eleven surgeons expressed their desire for achieving accreditation. On the other hand, seventeen surveyed professionals declared that Peru requires more subspecialists. Conclusion: there is lack of pediatric cardiovascular surgeons in Peru; so increasing posts for such subspecialists is necessary, and also there is an urgent need for increasing, improving, and articulating specialized centers., RESUMEN Objetivo: describir la disponibilidad de los cirujanos cardiovasculares pediátricos e identificar los factores que influyen en la situación de la certificación de esta subespecialidad en el Perú. Materiales y métodos: estudio transversal y descriptivo. Se realizó un muestreo por bola de nieve discriminatorio exponencial partiendo de los cirujanos cardiovasculares pediátricos que trabajan en el Instituto Nacional Cardiovascular hacia abril, 2019. Se solicitó su participación y posteriormente se aplicaron encuestas virtuales. Los datos recolectados de las preguntas cerradas se procesaron con estadísticos descriptivos y los de las preguntas abiertas, en base a su sistematización, orden y relación, obteniéndose así las conclusiones. Resultados: se encuestó a 20 cirujanos. De ellos, 5 refirieron haber estudiado la subespecialidad, teniendo como principales motivaciones una rotación durante el pregrado o la especialidad, y la vocación quirúrgica. Los tres subespecialistas certificados refirieron haberlo realizado debido al deseo de formalizar su práctica quirúrgica en el Perú y los otros dos refirieron no haberlo realizado por falta de tiempo. Asimismo, 11 cirujanos manifestaron el deseo de certificarse. Por otro lado, 17 encuestados refirieron que el Perú necesita más subespecialistas. Conclusión: existe una carencia de oferta de cirujanos cardiovasculares pediátricos en el Perú, lo cual muestra la necesidad de un aumento de las plazas para la subespecialidad; además, aumentar, mejorar y articular los centros resolutivos.
