Abstract

Background Nymphaeid macrophytes, rooting in the sediment of water bodies and characterized by floating leaves, play an important role in wetland ecosystems. The present research deals with the effects of limited space, limited nutrient availability, water temperature and an unexpected inundation on the production, turnover and plasticity of floating leaves of the globally widespread species Nymphoides peltata (Fringed waterlily). Methods The effects of these environmental conditions were studied in two plots in outdoor concrete tanks (CT1, CT2, mesocosms simulating occurrence in small ponds) and in two plots in the floodplain oxbow lake Bemmelse Strang (BS1, BS2). Plot CT1 was situated in a stand coexisting with helophytes, plot CT2 in a monospecific stand, plot BS1 in the center and plot BS2 at the open water border of a monospecific stand. All floating leaf blades within the plots were marked at appearance at the water surface and subsequently length, width and damage of each leaf and maximum and minimum water temperatures were measured bi-weekly. Area and biomass of leaf blades were calculated based on leaf length and width and were used to calculate turnover rates and production. Results The growth period started in May and ended mid-October with continuous production of floating leaves during nearly the whole vegetation period. In the tanks the water level was very stable, but the lake underwent an inundation by river water, causing a sudden loss of existing leaves. Considering environmental conditions and based on the assumed ranking from low to high nutrient availability, the ranking of the plots was CT1, CT2, BS1, BS2. This order was found for maximum leaf life span and maximum leaf length, and the reverse order was found for number of leaves, new leaves per day and duration of the vegetation period. Turnover rates appeared to be relatively similar for plots CT1, CT2 and BS1, but for the deeper border plot BS2 lower ratios were found. These results indicate that increased enclosure with expected nutrient limitation causes (1) the production of high numbers of small leaves with larger totals for leaf area and biomass, (2) a shift towards increased sexual reproduction by the production of more flowering stem leaves.

Malindi-Watamu reefs in Kenya reveal a strong correlation between the terrigenous sediment load and consequent combined coral stress response. Coral stress response is a combination of the proportion of injured colonies, cover of soft corals and rocky substrate unsuited for corals. Coral stress response is advantageous as it is a means of bio-monitoring.

En este trabajo se estudia la deformación por compresión de un filamento delgado inmerso en un fluído. Se estudia la forma del filamento variando la magnitud de la compresión aplicada y las propiedades reológicas del medio: puramente viscoso, puramente elástico y con comportamiento viscoelástico. Se observan transiciones entre regímenes de diferente estabilidad. In this work we study the deformation of a thin filament immersed in different fluids when subjected to a compressive force. The filament shape is analyzed for different magnitudes of the applied compression and for different rheological properties of the medium: purely viscous, purely elastic and displaying viscoelastic behavior. Item does not contain fulltext The importance of mangroves as feeding grounds for fish and other macrozoob-enthos in the Indian Ocean and elsewhere has been a subject of debate. This could partly be due to the fact that studies describing this role have been conducted in mangrove systems that differed in their settings. By using stable isotope analysis of carbon and nitrogen, we investigated two different settings of mangroves along the Tanzanian coast, to establish if mangrove setting influences the extent to which this habitat is utilized as a potential feeding ground by fish. The two mangrove settings were: mangrove-lined creeks which retain water during low tides and fringing mangroves that drain completely during low tides. The δ13C signatures of most fishes from the mangrove-lined creeks were similar to those of food items from the mangrove habitat, which suggests that these fishes feed from the mangrove habitats. In contrast, the overlap in δ13C of some food items from the fringing mangroves with those from adjacent habitats, and the more enriched δ13C signatures of fishes from the fringing mangroves with respect to most typical food items from the mangrove habitat could be an indication that these fishes feed from both habitats but to a lower extent from the fringing mangroves. The results suggest that fishes feed more from the mangrove-lined creeks as compared to fringing mangroves which is probably related to differences in the degree of mangrove inundation. The more or less continuous access provided more time for fishes to stay and feed in the mangrove-lined creeks compared to fishes from the fringing mangroves, which have access to these mangroves only during high tide and have to migrate to adjacent habitats with the ebbing tide.

In Europa zijn zeker 24 uitheemse springzaadsoorten in de handel. De reuzenbalsemien (Impatiens glandulifera) is al wijd verspreid in Nederland en België en veroorzaakt problemen door dominantie van de vegetatie. De Europese Commissie nomineert deze plantensoort voor de lijst van invasieve exoten van EU belang. Na plaatsing op de zogenoemde Unielijst zijn omvangrijke beheerinspanningen verplicht, maar is uitroeiing van deze exoot of indammen van zijn verspreiding nog wel mogelijk? Welke andere risicovolle springzaden kunnen zich in het wild vestigen?
