Abstract

Abstract Background Robotic cystectomy is the mainstay surgical intervention for treatment‐refractory nonmuscle‐invasive and muscle‐invasive bladder cancer. However, paralytic ileus may complicate the postoperative recovery and may be a consequence of an inflammatory response associated with transient gut ischaemia. We have therefore investigated clinical, operative and inflammatory biomarker associations between paralytic ileus in the context of robotic cystectomy and intracorporeal ileal conduit urinary diversion. Methods Prospective consective patients referred for robotic cystectomy were consented and included in the study, while patients >75 years old and converted to open procedure were excluded. The pneumoperitoneum pressure (PP) for carbon dioxide insufflation required to perform the procedure efficiently and safely was recorded (12 or 15 mmHg). We also recorded the postoperative days patients passed flatus and stools, whether they developed ileus, as well as other standard clinical and demographic data. The expression of select proinflammatory and anti‐inflammatory cytokines was determined by multiplex analysis using a cytometric bead array with changes in profiles correlated with the pressures applied and with the existence of an ileus. Results Twenty‐seven patients were recruited, but only 20 were used in the study with 10 patients in each PP group. Seven patients were excluded all of whom had an extracorporeal ileal conduit formation. There were differences in the 40‐min shorter operative time and 1 day shorter length of stay, as well as passing flatus 1 day and stools 1.5 days earlier in the 12 mmHg compared with the 15 mmHg group. More patients had ileus in the 15 mmHg group vs 12 mmHg group (30% vs. 10.0%). These were not statistically significant. Similarly, there were no statistical differences in the expression of proinflammatory cytokines at the two different pressures or between patient groups, but there were outliers, with the median indicating nonsymmetrical distribution. By comparison, anti‐inflammatory cytokines showed some significant differences between groups, with IL‐6 and IL‐10 showing elevated levels postsurgery. No statistical difference was observed between pressures or the existence of an ileus, but the maximum levels of IL‐6 and IL‐10 detected in some patients reflect a pressure difference. Conclusions The initial findings of this novel scientific study indicated a higher risk of paralytic ileus postrobotic cystectomy and robotic intracorporeal urinary diversion when a higher pressure of 15 mmHg is used compared with 12 mmHg. Although further studies are required to establish the linkage between cytokine profile expression, pressure and ileus, our initial data reinforces the advantages of lower pressure robotic cystectomy and intracorporeal urinary diversion in patient outcomes.

Abstract

Heat stress caused due to increasing warming climate has become a severe threat to global food production including rice. Silicon plays a major role in improving growth and productivity of rice by aiding in alleviating heat stress in rice. Soil silicon is only sparingly available to the crops can be made available by silicate solubilizing and plant-growth-promoting bacteria that possess the capacity to solubilize insoluble silicates can increase the availability of soluble silicates in the soil. In addition, plant growth promoting bacteria are known to enhance the tolerance to abiotic stresses of plants, by affecting the biochemical and physiological characteristics of plants. The present study is intended to understand the role of beneficial bacteria viz. Rhizobium sp. IIRR N1 a silicate solublizer and Gluconacetobacter diazotrophicus, a plant growth promoting bacteria and their interaction with insoluble silicate sources on morpho-physiological and molecular attributes of rice (Oryza sativa L.) seedlings after exposure to heat stress in a controlled hydroponic system. Joint inoculation of silicates and both the bacteria increased silicon content in rice tissue, root and shoot biomass, significantly increased the antioxidant enzyme activities (viz. superoxidase dismutase, catalase and ascorbate peroxidase) compared to other treatments with sole application of either silicon or bacteria. The physiological traits (viz. chlorophyll content, relative water content) were also found to be significantly enhanced in presence of silicates and both the bacteria after exposure to heat stress conditions. Expression profiling of shoot and root tissues of rice seedlings revealed that seedlings grown in the presence of silicates and both the bacteria exhibited higher expression of heat shock proteins (HSPs viz., OsHsp90, OsHsp100 and 60 kDa chaperonin), hormone-related genes (OsIAA6) and silicon transporters (OsLsi1 and OsLsi2) as compared to seedlings treated with either silicates or with the bacteria alone. The results thus reveal the interactive effect of combined application of silicates along with bacteria Rhizobium sp. IIRR N1, G. diazotrophicus inoculation not only led to augmented silicon uptake by rice seedlings but also influenced the plant biomass and elicited higher expression of HSPs, hormone-related and silicon transporter genes leading to improved tolerance of seedling to heat stress.

Abstract. Background:. To evaluate intraoperative and postoperative cytokines in patients who underwent robotic prostatectomy (RP) at a pressure of 12 or 15 mm Hg, and the risk of postoperative ileus. Materials and methods:. We presented the first series evaluating intraoperative and postoperative cytokines in patients undergoing RP at a pressure of 12 or 15 mm Hg by a single surgeon. Changes in cytokine concentrations were shown to correlate with surgical outcomes and pathological states. The study investigated the changes in cytokine concentrations (interferon-γ, tumor necrosis factor-α, interleukin-1β [IL-1β], IL-2, IL-4, IL-6, IL-12, and IL-17) at different pneumoperitoneum pressures and their potential role in the development of postoperative ileus. Results:. The data on 10 consecutive patients confirmed that a lower pneumoperitoneum pressure was associated with lower cytokine levels and a lower risk of ileus. There were increased levels of postoperative interferon-γ, tumor necrosis factor-α, IL-12p70, IL-1β, IL-2, IL-4, and IL-17a at 15 mm Hg when compared to 12 mm Hg. Conclusions:. The data indicated that lower pressure RP reduced intra-/postoperative cytokine levels confirming our hypothesis. Larger patient numbers are required to further validate this but the implications of this data will benefit not only urological patients but also other speciality patients undergoing minimally invasive surgery.

Abstract

The use of robotic-assisted laparoscopic techniques has transformed the face of urological surgery in the last decade, with demonstrable benefits over both unassisted laparoscopic and traditional open approaches. For example, robotic-assisted partial nephrectomy is associated with lower morbidity, improved convalescence, reduced postoperative pain, shorter length of hospital stay, and a superior cosmetic result when compared to an open procedure. This review discusses the various perioperative influences on the renal physiology of patients undergoing robotic-assisted urological procedures.

Abstract

The anatomical form of a tooth can undergo changes leading to loss of tooth form. The loss of tooth surface can be due to varying etiology. Dental caries, attrition, abrasion, erosion, involving any surface of the tooth can lead to loss of tooth structure. The rate of tooth destruction may proceed to such an extent that the esthetics, function and comfort may be lost. The role of a practioner lies in identification and screening of such case and motivate for oral rehabilitation that includes habit cessation. Computerized dentistry has raised the bar as far as esthetic restorations are concerned. Demanding esthetics has made zirconia crowns as the material of choice in full mouth rehabilitations. However, appropriate treatment planning with scientific evidence and a recommended treatment protocol with careful implementation results in successful restorations and satisfied patients.

Abstract

Background: Despite advances in surgery and pharmacotherapy, there remains significant residual ischemic risk after coronary artery bypass grafting surgery. Methods: In REDUCE-IT (Reduction of Cardiovascular Events With Icosapent Ethyl–Intervention Trial), a multicenter, placebo-controlled, double-blind trial, statin-treated patients with controlled low-density lipoprotein cholesterol and mild to moderate hypertriglyceridemia were randomized to 4 g daily of icosapent ethyl or placebo. They experienced a 25% reduction in risk of a primary efficacy end point (composite of cardiovascular death, myocardial infarction, stroke, coronary revascularization, or hospitalization for unstable angina) and a 26% reduction in risk of a key secondary efficacy end point (composite of cardiovascular death, myocardial infarction, or stroke) when compared with placebo. The current analysis reports on the subgroup of patients from the trial with a history of coronary artery bypass grafting. Results: Of the 8179 patients randomized in REDUCE-IT, a total of 1837 (22.5%) had a history of coronary artery bypass grafting, with 897 patients randomized to icosapent ethyl and 940 to placebo. Baseline characteristics were similar between treatment groups. Randomization to icosapent ethyl was associated with a significant reduction in the primary end point (hazard ratio [HR], 0.76 [95% CI, 0.63–0.92]; P =0.004), in the key secondary end point (HR, 0.69 [95% CI, 0.56–0.87]; P =0.001), and in total (first plus subsequent or recurrent) ischemic events (rate ratio, 0.64 [95% CI, 0.50–0.81]; P =0.0002) compared with placebo. This yielded an absolute risk reduction of 6.2% (95% CI, 2.3%–10.2%) in first events, with a number needed to treat of 16 (95% CI, 10–44) during a median follow-up time of 4.8 years. Safety findings were similar to the overall study: beyond an increased rate of atrial fibrillation/flutter requiring hospitalization for at least 24 hours (5.0% vs 3.1%; P =0.03) and a nonsignificant increase in bleeding, occurrences of adverse events were comparable between groups. Conclusions: In REDUCE-IT patients with a history of coronary artery bypass grafting, treatment with icosapent ethyl was associated with significant reductions in first and recurrent ischemic events. Abstract

Background:. To evaluate intraoperative and postoperative cytokines in patients who underwent robotic prostatectomy (RP) at a pressure of 12 or 15 mm Hg, and the risk of postoperative ileus. Materials and methods:. We presented the first series evaluating intraoperative and postoperative cytokines in patients undergoing RP at a pressure of 12 or 15 mm Hg by a single surgeon. Changes in cytokine concentrations were shown to correlate with surgical outcomes and pathological states. The study investigated the changes in cytokine concentrations (interferon-γ, tumor necrosis factor-α, interleukin-1β [IL-1β], IL-2, IL-4, IL-6, IL-12, and IL-17) at different pneumoperitoneum pressures and their potential role in the development of postoperative ileus. Results:. The data on 10 consecutive patients confirmed that a lower pneumoperitoneum pressure was associated with lower cytokine levels and a lower risk of ileus. There were increased levels of postoperative interferon-γ, tumor necrosis factor-α, IL-12p70, IL-1β, IL-2, IL-4, and IL-17a at 15 mm Hg when compared to 12 mm Hg. Conclusions:. The data indicated that lower pressure RP reduced intra-/postoperative cytokine levels confirming our hypothesis. Larger patient numbers are required to further validate this but the implications of this data will benefit not only urological patients but also other speciality patients undergoing minimally invasive surgery.

Abstract

Heat stress caused due to increasing warming climate has become a severe threat to global food production including rice. Silicon plays a major role in improving growth and productivity of rice by aiding in alleviating heat stress in rice. Soil silicon is only sparingly available to the crops can be made available by silicate solubilizing and plant-growth-promoting bacteria that possess the capacity to solubilize insoluble silicates can increase the availability of soluble silicates in the soil. In addition, plant growth promoting bacteria are known to enhance the tolerance to abiotic stresses of plants, by affecting the biochemical and physiological characteristics of plants. The present study is intended to understand the role of beneficial bacteria viz. Rhizobium sp. IIRR N1 a silicate solublizer and Gluconacetobacter diazotrophicus, a plant growth promoting bacteria and their interaction with insoluble silicate sources on morpho-physiological and molecular attributes of rice (Oryza sativa L.) seedlings after exposure to heat stress in a controlled hydroponic system. Joint inoculation of silicates and both the bacteria increased silicon content in rice tissue, root and shoot biomass, significantly increased the antioxidant enzyme activities (viz. superoxidase dismutase, catalase and ascorbate peroxidase) compared to other treatments with sole application of either silicon or bacteria. The physiological traits (viz. chlorophyll content, relative water content) were also found to be significantly enhanced in presence of silicates and both the bacteria after exposure to heat stress conditions. Expression profiling of shoot and root tissues of rice seedlings revealed that seedlings grown in the presence of silicates and both the bacteria exhibited higher expression of heat shock proteins (HSPs viz., OsHsp90, OsHsp100 and 60  kDa chaperonin), hormone-related genes (OsIAA6) and silicon transporters (OsLsi1 and OsLsi2) as compared to seedlings treated with either silicates or with the bacteria alone. The results thus reveal the interactive effect of combined application of silicates along with bacteria Rhizobium sp. IIRR N1, G. diazotrophicus inoculation not only led to augmented silicon uptake by rice seedlings but also influenced the plant biomass and elicited higher expression of HSPs, hormone-related and silicon transporter genes leading to improved tolerance of seedling to heat stress. Abstract

In this paper, an improved Re-Compressed H- Matrix is presented. Improvement with respect to accuracy and memory saving is shown compared to conventional H-Matrix. Improvement is obtained by extracting the orthogonal components of the compressed matrices for higher error tolerance and re-compressing it with Singular Value Decomposition (SVD) for the desired tolerance. The method maintains the compression cost of r2 (m + n) , storage and matrix-vector product cost of r(m + n) for a low-rank matrix block of rank r and size mXn.

Data offloading at the network with less time and reduced energy consumption are highly important for every technology. Smart applications process the data very quickly with less power consumption. As technology grows towards 5G communication architecture, identifying a solution for QoS in 5G through energy-efficient computing is important. In this proposed model, we perform data offloading at 5G using the fuzzification concept. Mobile IoT devices create tasks in the network and are offloaded in the cloud or mobile edge nodes based on energy consumption. Two base stations, small (SB) and macro (MB) stations, are initialized and the first tasks randomly computed. Then, the tasks are processed using a fuzzification algorithm to select SB or MB in the central server. The optimization is performed using a grasshopper algorithm for improving the QoS of the 5G network. The result is compared with existing algorithms and indicates that the proposed system improves the performance of the system with a cost of 44.64 J for computing 250 benchmark tasks. Abstract

Nerve sparing during robotic radical prostatectomy (RRP) considerably improves post-operative potency and urinary continence as long as it does not compromise oncological outcome. Excision of the neurovascular bundle (NVB) is often performed in patients with intermediate and high risk prostate cancer to reduce the risk of positive surgical margin raising the risk of urinary incontinence and impotence. We present the first UK series outcomes of such patients who underwent an intra-operative frozen section (IOFS) analysis of the prostate during RRP allowing nerve sparing.We prospectively analysed the data of 40 patients who underwent an IOFS during RRP at our centre from November 2012 until November 2014. Our IOFS technique involved whole lateral circumferential analysis of the prostate during RRP with the corresponding neurovascular tissue. An intrafascial nerve spare was performed and the specimen was removed intra-operatively via an extension of the 12 mm Autosuture™ camera port without undocking robotic arms. It was then painted by the surgeon and sprayed with "Ink Aid" prior to frozen section analysis. The corresponding NVB was excised if the histopathologist found a positive surgical margin on frozen section.Median time to extract the specimen, wound closure and re-establishment of pneumoperitoneum increased the operative time by 8 min. Median blood loss for IOFS was 130 ± 97 ml vs. 90 ± 72 ml (p = NS). IOFS was not associated with major complications or with blood transfusion. PSM decreased significantly from non-IOFS RRP series of 28.7 to 7.8% (p0.05). Intra-operative PSM on the prostate specimen was seen in 8/40 margin analysis (20%) leading to an excision of the contra-lateral nerve bundle. On analysis of the nerve bundle on a paraffin embedded block, 6 nerve bundle matched tumor on the specimen whereas 2 NVB were retrospectively removed unnecessarily in our series. All 40 patients have undetectable PSA at a mean follow up of 21.2 months (SD 7.79). Functional data at 18 months confirms a reduction in the urinary incontinence from 37% in the IOFS group vs 57% in the non-IOFS group (p = NS). IOFS technique has resulted in a significant increase in intravesical nerve sparing in both T2/T3 patients with intermediate and high risk prostate cancer when appropriately counselled and selected (T2 from 100% in the IOFS group versus 67% and T3 from 100% in the IOFS group to 42%) (p0.05).Introduction of the IOFS analysis during intrafascial nerve spare RRP has reduced PSM and the rate of urinary incontinence.

Abstract

The objective of this paper is to evaluate and analyze the performance of a suite of in-house developed parallel Integral Equation solvers using Method of Moments on a massively parallel-processing supercomputer system Cray XC40 named as SAHASRAT. The developed solvers can be used to accurately analyze composite structures, Radar Cross Section computation and antenna parameters for electrically large radar targets. With this methodology, large problems that were impossible to solve on a single-processor platform can be solved in a reasonable time on shared and distributed memory machines consisting of several thousands of cores. The size of the problem that can be extended to be as large as the amount of main memory on the available platform. In order to fill and perform dense linear algebra computations on the matrix, Message Passing Interface (MPI) with the state-of the art numerical library ScaLAPACK is used.

In this paper, a rigorous numerical technique of atmospheric wave propagation and scattering from an inhomogeneous medium is considered and simulated using Integral Equation in conjunction with Method of Moments. The inhomogeneous medium is the result of flow over an aircraft, which calls for the numerical solution of multiphysics and multiscale problem governed by Euler equations describing the acoustics/fluid-dynamics and Maxwell's equations for electromagnetic wave propagation. An important relation between flow inhomogeneities and the direction of incident electromagnetic field is presented by solving numerically the Volume-Surface Integral Equation and spatiotemporal scattering is discussed. The method presented here can also be easily adapted to many important problems in electromagnetics and scattering from large complex shaped inhomogeneous bodies such as biological systems.

Abstract

To evaluate if early unclamping (EUC) of the renal pedicle compromises perioperative outcomes in minimally invasive partial nephrectomy (PN). The cohort study includes all robot-assisted PN performed between September 2012 and September 2015 by a single surgeon at the Lister Hospital, Stevenage, UK. The systematic review and meta-analysis was performed according to the PRISMA guidelines identifying studies comparing EUC and standard unclamping (SUC) in either laparoscopic or robot-assisted PN. The Lister cohort prospectively reported 84 cases of robot-assisted PN (SUC = 22, EUC = 62) with a mean age of 58 years (SD = 11). The operative time (OT), estimated blood loss (EBL) and warm ischaemia time (WIT) were 186.5 min (SD = 33.8), 125.5 mls (SD = 188.91) and 16.7 min (SD = 5.6), respectively. The data from the Lister cohort were included in the meta-analysis. The systematic review identified four studies, encompassing 666 cases (313 SUC, 353 EUC), for inclusion in the final analysis. There was a statistically significant difference in WIT in favour of the EUC group [−10.59 min (95% CI −16.58, −4.60)]. Specifically, the reduction in WIT was more pronounced in laparoscopic PN (−15.43 min (95% CI −19.05, −11.81)), when compared with the robotic PN [−5.60 min (95% CI −5.70, −5.50)]. There was no statistical difference in OT [−3.97 min (95% CI −14.22, 6.28)]. EBL was found to be increased in the EUC group [71.39 ml (95% CI −0.78, 143.56)]. There was no statistically significant difference in transfusion rates or complications between the two groups. The EUC technique for robot-assisted PN appears to offer a safe limited period of WIT without compromising perioperative outcomes and morbidity.

A 33-year-old primigravida presented with severe sepsis, severe pre-eclampsia, peripartum cardiomyopathy and the haemolysis, elevated liver enzymes and low platelets syndrome manifesting over the course of 24 h causing a diagnostic conundrum and a difficult sequence of physiological problems to overcome. We describe a previously unreported sequence of events involving a pre-eclamptic, septic parturient to improve anaesthetic and intensive care physician awareness of confounding factors that complicate assessment and management of these patients.

Abstract

Robotic radical prostatectomy (RRP) is an established treatment for prostate cancer in selected centres with appropriate expertise. We studied our single-centre experience of developing a RRP service and subsequent training of 2 additional surgeons by the initial surgeon and the introduction of United Kingdom's first nationally accredited robotic fellowship training programme. We assessed the learning curve of the 3 surgeons with regard to peri-operative outcomes and oncological results.Three hundred consecutive patients underwent RRP between November 2008 and August 2012. Patients were divided into 3 equal groups (Group 1, case 1-100; Group 2, case 101-200; and Group 3, case 201-300). Age, ASA score, preoperative co-morbidities and indications for laparoscopic radical prostatectomy were comparable for all 3 patient groups. Peri-operative and oncological outcomes were compared across all 3 groups to assess the impact of the learning curve for laparoscopic radical prostatectomy. All surgical complications were classified using the Clavien-Dindo system.The mean age was 60.7 years (range 41-74). There was a significant reduction in the mean console time (p0.001), operating time (p0.001), mean length of hospital stay (p0.001) and duration of catheter (p0.001) between the 3 groups as the series progressed. The two most important factors predictive of positive surgical margins (PSM) at RRP were the initial prostate specific antigen (PSA) and tumor stage at diagnosis. The overall PSM rate was 26.7%. For T2/T3 tumors the incidence of PSM reduced as the series progressed (Group 1-22%, Group 2-32% and Group 3-26%). The incidence of major complications i.e. grade Clavien-Dindo system score ≤ III was 2% (6/300).RRP is a safe procedure with low morbidity. As surgeons progress through the learning curve peri-operative parameters and oncological outcomes improve. This learning curve is not affected by the introduction of a fellowship-training programme. Using a carefully structured mentored approach, RRP can be safely introduced as a new procedure without compromising patient outcomes.

Introduction External validation of four nephrometry scores (NS): Centrality index (C-index), arterial based complexity (ABC), preoperative aspects and dimensions used for an anatomical (PADUA) and radius expohytic/endophytic nearness anterior/posterior location (RENAL) scoring systems in patients who have undergone trans-peritoneal robotic assisted partial nephrectomy (RAPN). Material and methods A prospective database for RAPN has been maintained. Individual NSs were performed on 3-dimensional reconstructions of MDCT/MRI studies retrospectively by a board certified uroradiologist. Univariate Cox Proportional-Hazard Regression Analysis was performed for each NSs to valuate its predictability for the following parameters: Warm Ischemia Time (WIT), Estimated Blood Loss (EBL), Operative Time (OT), Complication Rates and Positive Margin Rates. Results 78 RAPNs were performed for suspected renal malignancies. The mean OT, EBL and WIT time was 186.5 minutes (SD – 33.8), 125.5 mls (SD – 188.91) and 16.7 minutes (SD – 5.6) respectively. The overall complication rate was 20.5% (16/78) of which only 2.6% (2/78) were Clavien Grade 3 or higher complications. The mean change in creatinine change at Day – 1 was 12.54 μmol/L (SD – 18.05). On the Cox regression analysis only the Centrality index predicted prolonged WIT with statistical significance: C-Index (0.02), ABC (0.2), PADUA (0.2), RENAL (0.9). ABC predicted operative time with statistical significance: C-index (0.45), ABC (0.0004), PADUA (0.25), RENAL (0.3). None of the NSs could predict overall complication: C-index (0.5), ABC (0.2), PADUA (0.13), RENAL (0.5). None of the NSs predicted EBL: C-index (0.3)0, ABC (0.8), PADUA (0.2), RENAL (0.7). None of the NSs predicted Positive Margin Rates: C-index (0.4), ABC (0.4), PADUA (0.9), RENAL (0.8). Conclusions C-index was able to predict prolonged WIT. ABC was a strong predictor of OT. PADUA and RENAL were poor predictors for all measured parameters.

Poly(N′-isopropylacrylamide-co–methacryl amide) has been prepared by free-radical emulsion polymerization. The copolymer was transformed into thermoresponsive microspheres by chemical crosslinking with N′, N′ Methylenebis-acrylamide (NNMBA). Enalpril maleate (ENAM), an anti-hypertensive drug, was successfully loaded into these microspheres during in-situ polymerization. DSC and X-RD analysis of the drug-loaded and plain microspheres have confirmed partial dispersion of ENAM in the microspheres. SEM confirmed the spherical nature of the particles with a mean particle size of 100 µm. Drug release profiles of these microspheres exhibited a prolonged release of ENAM for more than 12 h.

With the advances of techniques for RCS reduction, it has become practical to develop aircraft which are invisible to modern day radars. In order to detect such low visible targets it is necessary to explore other phenomenon that contributes to the scattering of incident electromagnetic wave. It is well known from the developments from the clear air scattering using RASS induced acoustic wave could be used to create dielectric constant fluctuation. The scattering from these fluctuations rather than from the aircraft have been observed to enhance the RCS of clear air, under the condition when the incident EM wave is half of the acoustic wave, the condition of Bragg scattering would be met and RCS would be enhanced.

In this article, we investigate the performance of a volume integral equation code on BlueGene/L system. Volume integral equation (VIE) is solved for homogeneous and inhomogeneous dielectric objects for radar cross section (RCS) calculation in a highly parallel environment. Pulse basis functions and point matching technique is used to convert the volume integral equation into a set of simultaneous linear equations and is solved using parallel numerical library ScaLAPACK on IBM's distributed-memory supercomputer BlueGene/L by different number of processors to compare the speedup and test the scalability of the code.

Fixed partial denture has become the treatment of choice in conditions which showed absolute or relative contraindications for other prosthetic options. Though there are evidences that shows mean incidence of success of FPDs, there are also various failures associated with it. The common failures include loss of retention, fracture of abutment, fracture of bridgework and including the periodontal complications. According to Ante's law "the root surface area of the abutment teeth has to be equal or surpass that of teeth being replaced with pontic". Hence as a prerequisite for the selection of abutment tooth, it should have a healthy supporting tissue surrounding it and should be devoid of inflammation. Nyman et al documented good long range survival of periodontally compromised abutment teeth that had undergone long term follow-up of perio-prosthetic treatment.
