1. Differentiating dilatons from the axions by their mixing with photons

Abstract

Abstract The quanta of scalar fields like the dilaton ( $$\phi $$ ϕ ) of scale symmetry origin and those of pseudoscalar fields like the axion ( $$\phi '$$ ϕ ′ ) of Peccei–Quinn symmetry origin couple to di-photons through dimension-5 operators. In a magnetized medium (MM), they in principle can interact with the two transverse ( $$A_{\parallel ,\perp }$$ A ‖ , ⊥ ) and one longitudinal ( $$A_{L}$$ A L ) degree of freedom of photons ( $$\gamma $$ γ ) as long as the total spin is conserved. However, of $$\phi $$ ϕ and $$\phi '$$ ϕ ′ , only one interacts with $$A_{L}$$ A L . We found that the ambient external magnetic field B and media break the intrinsic Lorentz symmetry of the system affecting the dispersion relation of the propagating modes. The boost and the rotational symmetry along and around B are however the ones that are preserved. Invoking C, P, and T symmetries, we analyze the mixing dynamics of $$\phi \gamma $$ ϕ γ and $$\phi '\gamma $$ ϕ ′ γ systems and the structural difference in their mixing pattern. It is noted that while the $$\phi \gamma $$ ϕ γ mixing matrix is $$3\times 3$$ 3 × 3 , the $$\phi ^{\prime }\gamma $$ ϕ ′ γ is governed by a $$4\times 4$$ 4 × 4 mixing matrix. Using the exact solutions of both systems in MM, we estimate the strength of the electromagnetic (EM) signals available due to these interactions, which are found to be different in strength. We conclude by commenting on (a) the possibility of detecting this difference in polarimetric observables of the EM signal, (b) the implications of these different mixing patterns with respect to the minimum detectable signal for astrophysical observations, and (c) the variation in the energy of the dispersed photons of different polarization with the variation in B.

Abstract

In the presence of a thermal medium or an external electro-magnetic field, neutrinos can interact with photon, mediated by the corresponding charged leptons (real or virtual). The effect of a medium or an electromagnetic field is two-fold—to induce an effective νγ vertex and to modify the dispersion relations of all the particles involved to render the processes kinematically viable. It has already been noted that, in a medium, neutrinos acquire an effective charge, which in the standard model of electroweak interaction comes from the vector type vertex of weak interaction. On the other hand, in a magnetized plasma, the axial vector part also starts contributing to the effective charge of a neutrino. This contribution corresponding to the axial vector part in the interaction Lagrangian is denoted as the axial polarisation tensor. In this note, we outline the calculation of the axial polarization tensor to odd and even powers in eB. We further show its gauge invariance properties. Finally, we infer upon the zero external momentum limit of this axial polarisation tensor.

8. Development and Fabrication of an Autonomous Seed Sowing Robot

Abstract

Automisation of agricultural processes provides the benefits of increased efficiency, productivity, healthy crops, efficient use of resources & material and labour cost savings. In this paper, an autonomous seed-sowing robot is designed to cope up the above goals. The robot divides the field into a grid with intersection points as places where the seeds are sown. The depth of the hole, the distance between points where the seeds are sown is calculated according to government data and is fed to the logic board of the robot. The robot goes to the starting points and makes a hole using a toothed wheel with teeth of increasing height. The delivery system makes sure that only one seed is dispensed per hole and the back plate mechanism fills the hole after sowing is done. Sensors are used for obstacle detection and robot changes its path accordingly. There are several robots available in the market and research has been done on many more, that perform the above functions separately but no one has integrated all the above functions in one system. The proposed robot does this and provides a better solution for low productivity nations.

Abstract

The current status of the India-based Neutrino Observatory (INO) is summarized. The main physics goals are described followed by the motivation for building a magnetized iron calorimetric (ICAL) detector. The charge identification capability of ICAL would make it complementary to large water Cerenkov and other detectors worldwide. The status of the design of the 50 kt magnet, the construction of a prototype ICAL detector, the experience with resistive plate chambers which will be the active elements in ICAL and the status of the associated electronics and data acquisition system are discussed.

12. Production and decay of the73Ge*(1/2−) metastable state in a low-background germanium detector

Abstract

The $\ge73m$ metastable states decay with a very characteristic signature which allow them to be tagged event-by-event. Studies were performed using data taken with a high-purity germanium detector in a low-background laboratory near a nuclear power reactor core where $\nuebar$-flux was $\rm{6.4 \times 10^{12} ~ cm^{-2} s^{-1}}$. The measured average and equilibrium production rates of $\ge73m$ were $\rm{(8.7 \pm 0.4)}$ and $\rm{(6.7 \pm 0.3) ~ kg^{-1} day^{-1}}$, respectively. The production channels were studied and identified. By studying the difference in the production of $\ge73m$ between the reactor ON and OFF spectra, the limiting sensitivities at the range of $\rm{\sim 10^{-42} - 10^{-43} ~ cm^2}$ for the cross-sections of neutrino-induced nuclear transitions were derived. The dominant background are due to $\beta$-decays of cosmic-ray induced $^{73}$Ga. The prospects of enhancing the sensitivities at underground locations are discussed.

Abstract

This document describes the conceptual design for the Offline Software and Computing for the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE). The goals of the experiment include 1) studying neutrino oscillations using a beam of neutrinos sent from Fermilab in Illinois to the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) in Lead, South Dakota, 2) studying astrophysical neutrino sources and rare processes and 3) understanding the physics of neutrino interactions in matter. We describe the development of the computing infrastructure needed to achieve the physics goals of the experiment by storing, cataloging, reconstructing, simulating, and analyzing $\sim$ 30 PB of data/year from DUNE and its prototypes. Rather than prescribing particular algorithms, our goal is to provide resources that are flexible and accessible enough to support creative software solutions and advanced algorithms as HEP computing evolves.
