1. Modelling the Dissipation Range of von K\'arm\'an Turbulence Spectrum

Abstract

Noise pollution caused by inflow turbulence is a major problem in many applications, such as propellers and fans. Leading edge noise models, e.g., Amiet's model, are widely applied to predict the noise produced by these applications. This noise prediction model relies on the accuracy of the turbulence spectrum, which is usually assumed to be the von K\'arm\'an energy spectrum for isotropic turbulence. However, the von K\'arm\'an spectrum does not model accurately the dissipation range of the turbulent energy, resulting in incorrect far-field noise predictions for the high-frequency range. An exponential correction can be applied to the spectrum to model the dissipation range. This correction depends on the dissipation frequency, which is the frequency where the energy spectrum changes from a dependence of $k^{-5/3}$ to an exponential decay. This study experimentally investigates nearly isotropic inflow turbulence and determines the flow field characteristics that affect the dissipation frequency in order to model this frequency and the dissipation range. Experiments have been conducted with two passive grids and hot-wire anemometry in the Aeroacoustic Wind Tunnel of the University of Twente. The turbulence uniformity in the test section and the turbulence development in the streamwise direction were analyzed, showing that the grid generated turbulence was mostly uniform and nearly isotropic. The dissipation frequency was observed to depend on the turbulence intensity, the free-stream velocity, and the turbulence length scale. An expression to compute this frequency is proposed, as well as a formula to predict the dissipation range. The predicted leading edge noise is affected by the dissipation range modelling in the high-frequency range, presenting a decrease in level up to 17 dB for the highest frequencies.

3. Critical review of Murray's theory for optimal branching in fluidic networks

Abstract

Murray's theory of constrained minimum-power branchings is critically reviewed in a generalised framework for a range of cases: channels with arbitrary cross-section shape, laminar flows of Newtonian and non-Newtonian fluids, and low and high Reynolds-number turbulent flows of Newtonian fluids. The theory states that the sum of hydraulic and metabolic power is minimised if and only if all channels satisfy the same relation between flow rate and effective radius. This relation leads to a generalised form of Murray's law. It is shown that, satisfying Murray's law is a necessary requirement for power minimisation, but not a sufficient requirement. The generalisation of Kamiya & Togawa's law that holds for minimum-volume branchings, also holds for minimum-power branchings. It is a necessary requirement but not a sufficient requirement for both minimum-power and minimum-volume branchings. 4. Multilevel Evaluation of Multidimensional Integral Transforms with Asymptotically Smooth Kernels

Abstract

In many practical applications of numerical methods a substantial increase in efficiency can be obtained by using local grid refinement, since the solution is generally smooth in large parts of the domain and large gradients occur only locally. Fast evaluation of integral transforms on such an adaptive grid requires an algorithm that relies on the smoothness of the continuum kernel only, independent of its discrete form. A multilevel algorithm with this property was presented in [A. Brandt and C.H. Venner, SIAM J. Sci. Stat. Comput. 19 (1998) pp.468-492] [Bra1998]. Ref. [Bra1998] shows that already on a uniform grid the new algorithm is more efficient than earlier fast evaluation algorithms, and elaborates the application to one-dimensional transforms. The present work analyses the extension and implementation of the algorithm for multidimensional transforms. The analysis conveys that the multidimensional extension is nontrivial, on account of the occurence of nonlocal corrections. However, by virtue of the asymptotic smoothness properties of the continuum kernel, these corrections can again be evaluated fast. By recursion, it is then possible to obtain the optimal work estimates indicated in [Bra1998]. Currently, only uniform grids are considered. Detailed numerical results will be presented for a two dimensional model problem. The results demonstrate that with the new algorithm the evaluation of multidimensional transforms is also more efficient than with previous algorithms.

Abstract

The purpose of this research study is to determine whether customer service affects the loyalty of Acumaster Manufacturing Corporation's customers. This paper uses existing findings to identify factors that may affect customer loyalty. Further reading the content will give the readers and future researchers essential details. The study utilized a descriptive research method and convenience sampling where the researchers focused on fifty (50) customers of Acumaster Manufacturing Corporation and created five (5) parts of the survey questionnaire based on the problem of the studies, separating each problem accordingly. The researcher uses frequency and percentage to determine the respondents and description according to age and gender and used weighted mean to define the response of customer service to customers in terms of convenience, response time, employee personality, and the effects of customer service on customer’s loyalty of Acumaster in terms of customer satisfaction, customer needs, and complaints and feedback. From the findings, conclusions, and recommendations, Acumaster Manufacturing Corporation was evaluated as “Very Strongly Effective “by the respondents. Acumaster should always ask customers for feedback and complaints to fill the business gap and be more productive in assessing customers. They must implement new strategies. The business should build good customer relationships to know their needs and fulfil customer satisfaction. Acumaster must keep setting goals to improve their customer service, which leads to customer satisfaction, and provide training programs. The business must look up to its business image internally and externally. This study shows the effects of customer service on customer loyalty.

Abstract

In the phase 3 ANDROMEDA trial, patients treated with daratumumab, bortezomib, cyclophosphamide, and dexamethasone (D-VCd) had significantly higher rates of organ and hematologic response compared with patients who received VCd alone. Here, we present patient-reported outcomes (PROs) from the ANDROMEDA trial. PROs were assessed through cycle 6 using three standardized questionnaires. Treatment effect through cycle 6 was measured by a repeated-measures, mixed-effects model. The magnitude of changes in PROs versus baseline was generally low, but between-group differences favored the D-VCd group. Results were generally consistent irrespective of hematologic, cardiac, or renal responses. More patients in the D-VCd group experienced meaningful improvements in PROs; median time to improvement was more rapid in the D-VCd group versus the VCd group. After cycle 6, patients in the D-VCd group received daratumumab monotherapy and their PRO assessments continued, with improvements in health-related quality of life (HRQoL) reported through cycle 19. PROs of subgroups with renal and cardiac involvement were consistent with those of the intent-to-treat population. These results demonstrate that the previously reported clinical benefits of D-VCd were achieved without decrement to patients' HRQoL and provide support of D-VCd in patients with AL amyloidosis. © 2022 Wiley Periodicals LLC.

Abstract

Exercise Doppler echocardiography (EDE) is a well-validated tool in ischemic and valvular heart diseases. However, its use in the assessment of the right heart and pulmonary circulation unit (RH-PCU) is limited. The aim of this study is to assess the semi-recumbent bicycle EDE feasibility for the evaluation of RH-PCU in a large multi-center population, from healthy individuals and elite athletes to patients with overt or at risk of developing pulmonary hypertension (PH). From January 2019 to July 2019, 954 subjects [mean age 54.2 ± 16.4years, range 16–96, 430 women] underwent standardized semi-recumbent bicycle EDE with an incremental workload of 25 watts every 2min, were prospectively enrolled among 7 centers participating to the RIGHT Heart International NETwork (RIGHT-NET). EDE parameters of right heart structure, function and pressures were obtained according to current recommendations. Right ventricular (RV) function at peak exercise was feasible in 903/940 (96%) by tricuspid annular plane systolic excursion (TAPSE), 667/751 (89%) by tissue Doppler-derived tricuspid lateral annular systolic velocity (S′) and 445/672 (66.2%) by right ventricular fractional area change (RVFAC). RV—right atrial pressure gradient [RV–RA gradient = 4 × tricuspid regurgitation velocity2 (TRV)] was feasible in 894/954 patients (93.7%) at rest and in 816/954 (85.5%) at peak exercise. The feasibility rate in estimating pulmonary artery pressure improved to more than 95%, if both TRV and/or right ventricular outflow tract acceleration time (RVOT AcT) were considered. In high specialized echocardiography laboratories semi-recumbent bicycle EDE is a feasible tool for the assessment of the RH-PCU pressure and function.

Abstract

Systemic immunoglobulin light-chain (AL) amyloidosis is characterized by deposition of amyloid fibrils of light chains produced by clonal CD38+ plasma cells. Daratumumab, a human CD38-targeting antibody, may improve outcomes for this disease.We randomly assigned patients with newly diagnosed AL amyloidosis to receive six cycles of bortezomib, cyclophosphamide, and dexamethasone either alone (control group) or with subcutaneous daratumumab followed by single-agent daratumumab every 4 weeks for up to 24 cycles (daratumumab group). The primary end point was a hematologic complete response.A total of 388 patients underwent randomization. The median follow-up was 11.4 months. The percentage of patients who had a hematologic complete response was significantly higher in the daratumumab group than in the control group (53.3% vs. 18.1%) (relative risk ratio, 2.9; 95% confidence interval [CI], 2.1 to 4.1; P0.001). Survival free from major organ deterioration or hematologic progression favored the daratumumab group (hazard ratio for major organ deterioration, hematologic progression, or death, 0.58; 95% CI, 0.36 to 0.93; P = 0.02). At 6 months, more cardiac and renal responses occurred in the daratumumab group than in the control group (41.5% vs. 22.2% and 53.0% vs. 23.9%, respectively). The four most common grade 3 or 4 adverse events were lymphopenia (13.0% in the daratumumab group and 10.1% in the control group), pneumonia (7.8% and 4.3%, respectively), cardiac failure (6.2% and 4.8%), and diarrhea (5.7% and 3.7%). Systemic administration-related reactions to daratumumab occurred in 7.3% of the patients. A total of 56 patients died (27 in the daratumumab group and 29 in the control group), most due to amyloidosis-related cardiomyopathy.Among patients with newly diagnosed AL amyloidosis, the addition of daratumumab to bortezomib, cyclophosphamide, and dexamethasone was associated with higher frequencies of hematologic complete response and survival free from major organ deterioration or hematologic progression. 31. Acoustic Lucky Imaging: Retrieving spatial resolution in beamforming lost by reduced signal coherence

Abstract

In aeroacoustic wind tunnel measurements beamforming algorithms are frequently employed to detect and quantify aerodynamic noise sources. In open test section wind tunnels the sound originating from a noise source travels from inside the potential core into the quiescent flow region where the microphone array is located, on its way passing through a turbulent shear layer. The velocity fluctuations in the shear layer stochastically alter the propagation time between source and observer. Since this process is random and dependent on observer position the coherence between two microphone pairs decreases. This leads to beamforming maps with reduced peak Sound Pressure Level. This paper explores the applicability of the Lucky Imaging method, originally developed for use in astronomy to correct for image distortion due to the earth’s atmosphere, to improve results of acoustic wind tunnel measurements in order to mitigate the effect of coherence loss. The Lucky Imaging method uses a short-exposure time to freeze the effect of the turbulence. Pictures which are distorted are then discarded and only the pictures with low distortion are further processed. The method has been adapted towards use in beamforming applications. The Acoustic Lucky Imaging uses beamforming maps generated with data acquired in a short-interval. Subsequently the distorted maps are discarded and the remaining maps are further processed using a shift-and-add method in order to spatially align the sound sources. Numerical and experimental results show that this process is able to recover part of the lost resolution and restore peak Sound Pressure Level up to 6 dB.

Abstract

Most frictional contacts are lubricated in some way, but is has proven difficult to measure and predict lubrication layer thicknesses and assess how they influence friction at the same time. Here we study the problem of rigid-isoviscous lubrication between a plate and a sphere, both experimentally and theoretically. The liquid layer thickness is measured by a novel method using inductive sensing, while the friction is measured simultaneously. The measured values of the layer thickness and friction on the disk are well described by the hydrodynamic description of liquid flowing through a contact area. This allows us to propose a modified version of the Hersey number that compares viscous to normal forces and allows us to rescale data for different geometries and systems. The modification overcomes the shortcomings of the commonly used Hersey number, adds the effects of the geometry of the configuration on the friction, and successfully predicts the lubrication layer thickness.

46. Rapid Failure of Lubricated Contacts With Grease Under Zero Entraining Velocity Condition

Abstract

In response to the rapid failure of grease lubrication under low surface speed with zero entraining velocity, a common occurrence in ball screws or cageless rolling element bearings, detailed observations were conducted through optical interferometric experiments. It was observed that despite a constant surface speed and load, the motion remained transient due to the transition between outlet cavitation and inlet starvation. The reciprocating motion of the cavitation zone rapidly depleted the contact area, leading to severe surface peeling. However, as the surface speed increased, this phenomenon was alleviated and eventually disappeared. To enhance lubrication performance, bilateral grooves were created using laser technology, proving to be advantageous for grease lubrication life under low surface speed conditions. Despite the occurrence of rapid surface failure, grease lubrication demonstrated clear benefits over oil lubrication when operating at low surface speeds.
