Social media data are transforming sustainability science. However, challenges from restrictions in data accessibility and ethical concerns regarding potential data misuse have threatened this nascent field. Here, we review the literature on the use of social media data in environmental and sustainability research. We find that they can play a novel and irreplaceable role in achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals by allowing a nuanced understanding of human-nature interactions at scale, observing the dynamics of so-cial-ecological change, and investigating the co-construction of nature values. We reveal threats to data ac-cess and highlight scientific responsibility to address trade-offs between research transparency and privacy protection, while promoting inclusivity. This contributes to a wider societal debate of social media data for sustainability science and for the common good.

The aim of the project was to create a nationwide, uniform, spatially high- resolution nutrient model together with agricultural and water management authorities of the federal states in order to create information bases that can contribute to fulfilling the reporting obligations of the Water Framework Directive (WFD), among other things. The aim was to map inputs of nitrogen and phosphorus from agriculture, the wastewater sector and the air pathway into groundwater, surface waters and the tributaries in the North Sea and Baltic Sea or the transfer levels to neighbouring countries, taking into account the respective most important conversion and degradation processes. The AGRUM-DE model network consists of the agricultural-economic model RAUMIS (operated at the Thünen Institute) and the hydrological models mGROWA-DENUZ- WEKU-MePhos (Jülich Research Centre, FZJ) and the model MONERIS (Institute of Freshwater Ecology and Inland Fisheries, IGB): • Using the RAUMIS model, the Thünen Institute calculated nitrogen balances of agriculture on municipal areas and an analysis of the effect of the amended Fertiliser Ordinance (DüV) on achieving the management objectives for groundwater, inland waters and coastal waters. • Using the mGROWA-WEKU-DENUZ-MEPhos models of the Jülich Research Centre, the water balance and diffuse nutrient inputs into groundwater and surface waters were determined separately according to the most important input pathways. The model calculations were carried out for the entire area of Germany in a grid of 100 m × 100 m. • The MONERIS model was developed and applied by the IGB in Berlin to calculate N and P inputs from point sources and urban systems into surface waters at the municipal level and the retention and degradation of N and P compounds in surface waters at the sub-basin level. Through an as-is analysis, the different origins and levels of nutrient inputs were first determined. This made it possible to spatially identify pollution hot-spots and thus priority areas for the implementation of measures. Based on this, the regional N and P action requirement to achieve the protection goals for groundwater and surface waters to achieve the marine protection goals was determined and the effects of the amended Fertiliser Ordinance on nutrient inputs were analyzed. The universal soil loss equation (USLE) is widely used to identify areas of erosion risk at regional scales. In Brandenburg, USLE R factors are usually estimated from summer rainfall, based on a relationship from the 1990s. We compared estimated and calculated factors of 22 stations with 10-min rainfall data. To obtain more realistic estimations, we regressed the latter to three rainfall indices (total and heavy-rainfall sums). These models were applied to estimate future R factors of 188 climate stations. To assess uncertainties, we derived eight scenarios from 15 climate models and two representative concentration pathways (RCP), and compared the effects of index choice to the choices of climate model, RCP, and bias correction. The existing regression model underestimated the calculated R factors by 40%. Moreover, using heavy-rainfall sums instead of total sums explained the variability of current R factors better, increased their future changes, and reduced the model uncertainty. The impact of index choice on future R factors was similar to the other choices. Despite all uncertainties, the results indicate that average R factors will remain above past values. Instead, the extent of arable land experiencing excessive soil loss might double until the mid-century with RCP 8.5 and unchanged land management.

Zur Beantwortung der Frage, ob Stickstoffreduktion in solchen Gewässern wirtschaftlich vertretbar ist, wurde am Beispiel eines für die Norddeutsche Tiefebene charakteristischen Flusssees, der Berliner Unterhavel, untersucht, mit welchen Kosten und Nutzen das Erreichen des guten ökologischen Zustandes verbunden ist. Hierfür wurde zunächst der Status quo der Stickstoff- und Phosphoreinträge aus dem Einzugsgebiet (EZG) sowie deren Konzentration in der Berliner Unterhavel ermittelt. Darauf basierend wurde berechnet, in welchem Umfang die Einträge reduziert werden müssen, um die gewässerinterne Konzentration auf einen Wert zu senken, ab dem erwartet wird, dass sich der gute ökologische Zustand einstellt. Zielwerte für Stickstoff- und Phosphorkonzentrationen in unterschiedlichen Gewässertypen wurden in einer vorangegangenen Studie ermittelt (modifiziert nach: NITROLIMIT-Diskussionspapier Band 1, 2013; Dolman et al. 2016). Im nächsten Schritt wurden für das Einzugsgebiet der Berliner Unterhavel kosteneffiziente Stickstoffreduktionsmaßnahmen im urbanen und landwirtschaftlichen Bereich identifiziert. Schließlich wurde für verschiedene Kombinationen ausgewählter Maßnahmen ermittelt, wie hoch die Stickstoffreduktionsleistung und die entsprechenden Kosten wären, wenn sie im Einzugsgebiet der Berliner Unterhavel umgesetzt würden. Der ökonomische Nutzen wurde anhand der Zahlungsbereitschaft der Berliner und Brandenburger Bevölkerung für das Erreichen des guten ökologischen Zustandes der Berliner Unterhavel ermittelt. Die Zahlungsbereitschaft wurde in einer Umfrage erhoben, bei der auch erfasst wurde, wie häufig Gewässer zur Erholung aufgesucht und welche Aktivitäten dort am liebsten ausgeübt werden. Abschließend wurden die Kosten für Maßnahmen zur Stickstoffreduktion dem Nutzen gegenübergestellt. In diesem Diskussionspapier werden die wesentlichen Ergebnisse der Studien dargestellt. Eine ausführliche Darstellung aller Ergebnisse und methodischen Details sind im Abschlussbericht von NITROLIMIT I (2014) zu finden (S. 127-186).

Seit dem Jahr 2000 bestehen in der Europäischen Union durch die Wasserrahmenrichtlinie Wasserqualitätsziele für Grundwasser sowie Oberflächen- und Küstengewässer. Für Niedersachsen wurden alle relevanten diffusen und punktuellen Nährstoffeinträge, -frachten und der erforderliche Reduktionsbedarf mit dem AGRUM-Modellverbund, bestehend aus dem Agrarsektormodell RAUMIS, dem Modellsystem GROWA/WEKU/DENUZ/MEPHOS sowie dem Nährstofftransportmodell MONERIS, abgebildet. Aufbauend auf dem Basisjahr 2007 wurde die Eintragssituation 2021 simuliert. Berücksichtigt wurden unter anderem die Düngevorordnung (DüV 2006) sowie die Agrarumweltprogramme 2007 bis 2013, die weitere Entwicklung der Agrarmärkte und der Agrarpolitik. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass unter Berücksichtigung der bisherigen Maßnahmen die Wasserqualitätsziele in Niedersachsen bis 2021 nicht flächendeckend erreicht werden. Als ergänzende Maßnahmen zeigen Agrarumweltmaßnahmen, die auf eine Reduktion der Stickstoffbilanzüberschüsse zur Verbesserung der Wasserqualität abzielen, in einigen Regionen gute Reduktionspotenziale. In anderen Regionen wäre eine Ausweitung auf die gesamte landwirtschaftliche Fläche jedoch nicht ausreichend, um die Qualitätsziele zu erreichen. Insbesondere in diesen Regionen ist aufgrund einer intensiven landwirtschaftlichen Produktion, hoher Produktionserlöse und des Flächennutzungsdrucks eine Zunahme der bisherigen Förderflächen nicht realistisch. Es müssen daher weitere Handlungsoptionen in Betracht gezogen werden, um die gesetzten Ziele zu erreichen. Since 2000 the Water Framework Directive defines water quality targets for groundwater, surface water bodies and coastal waters in the European Union. Employing the model network AGRUM, consisting of the agricultural sector models RAUMIS, the model system GROWA, DENUZ/WEKU, MEPhos and the nutrient transfer model MONERIS, all relevant diffuse and point source nutrient inputs and loads have been simulated for the Federal State of Lower Saxony. The nutrient input situation in 2021 was modelled based on the reference year 2007. Thereby the Fertilizer Directive of 2006, the agri-environmental programs in the period of 2007 to 2013, the future development of the agricultural markets and of agricultural policy have been taken into account. The results predict that the measures and actions already implemented and adopted are not adequate for Lower Saxony to achieve the water quality targets of the Water Framework Directive state wide until 2021. Agri-environmental measures designed to reduce nitrogen balance surpluses on agricultural land and improve water quality, as complementary measures, show a high reduction potential. In other regions an extension of agri-environmental measures to the entire agricultural area of the region might be insufficient to achieve the quality targets. Especially in these regions an increase of the existing area of agri-environmental measures is not realistic due to high intensity agricultural production, a high income and the existing land use pressure. Therefore it is necessary to consider further options for action.

Kurzfassung Die Europäische Wasserrahmenrichtlinie (EG-Wasserrahmenrichtlinie 2000) hat zum Ziel in den Flusseinzugsgebieten Europas das Erreichen eines guten Zustands bzw. des guten ökologischen Potenzials und des guten chemischen Zustands aller Oberflächengewässer sowie des guten mengenmäßigen und chemischen Zustands des Grundwassers bis zum Jahr 2015 herzustellen. Eine Fristverlängerung ist bis 2021 bzw. 2027 in Ausnahmefällen möglich. Für die Flussgebietseinheit Weser werden die Zielkonzentrationen Stickstoff und Phosphor bis 2015 nicht erreicht. Daher ist es Ziel des Projektes AGRUM+ die Nährstoffeinträge und -konzentrationen im Jahr 2021 abzuschätzen und wissenschaftliche Analysen zur Unterstützung der Maßnahmenplanung und Umsetzung zu liefern. Dafür wird der Modellverbund AGRUM Weser bestehend aus den Modellen RAUMIS, GROWA, DENUZ/WEKU, MEPhos und MONERIS erheblich weiterentwickelt und angepasst. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass sich die in der Vergangenheit zu beobachtende Reduzierung der Nährstoffbilanzüberschüsse auch bis 2021 fortsetzen wird und somit auch eine Reduzierung der Nährstoffeinträge in das Grundwasser und die Oberflächengewässer zu erwarten ist. Jedoch werden für die Baseline 2021 für die beiden untersuchten Nährstoffe Stickstoff und Phosphor unter Berücksichtigung der Wirkungsverzögerung weder die Ziele für das Grundwasser noch die Zielkonzentrationen für die Oberflächengewässer erreicht. Der Umfang der notwendigen Maßnahmen sowie die regionalen Schwerpunkte der notwendigen Maßnahmen verdeutlichen, dass eine Ausdehnung der Agrarumweltmaßnahmen sowie eine moderate Verschärfung der Düngeverordnung nicht ausreichen werden, um die Gewässerschutzziele zu erreichen------------------------------The aim of the European Water Framework Directive is the achievement of a good ecological or rather ecological potential and chemical status for surface waters, as well as a good chemical and quantitative status for groundwater until 2015. For the river basin Weser the target concentrations will not be achieved by 2015. For exemptions extended deadlines until 2021 and 2027 are possible. Hence the aim of the AGRUM+ project is to analyze nutrient inputs and nutrient concentrations until 2021 and to conduct scientific analysis for the design of measure plans and their implementation. For this the AGRUM Weser model network consisting of the models RAUMIS, GROWA, DENUZ/WEKU, MEPhos and MONERIS is further developed and adapted. Results show that the past trend of decline of nutrient surpluses will be further continued until 2021 which also leads to a reduction of nutrient inputs into ground and surface waters. Nevertheless, in the baseline 2021 the target concentrations for the nutrients nitrate and phosphorous for ground- and surface water will not be achieved even considering an impact delay. The amount of necessary measures and the regional hot-spots of measures show that an increase in agri-environmental measures as well as a moderate intensification of the manure regulation will not be sufficient to achieve the water protection targets.

The Weser River Basin will most likely not meet European water framework directive nitrogen concentration targets by 2015. We use the AGRUM model network connecting hydrological and nutrient transport models with a German agricultural sector model to analyse current and future nitrogen surplus developments, water quality aspects and additional agrienvironmental measures to discuss options for WFD targets until 2021. Results show that even with a full implementation of the nitrogen directive and with additional agrienvironmental measures the objectives of the WFD can hardly be met.

Since humans are preferentially settling in flood plains they often influence freshwater systems intensely. The first signs of anthropogenic impacts on surface waters in the Berlin-Brandenburg region are approximately 3000 years old. Considering the multiple and intense human uses of surface waters in this region, we analysed when, how and to which extent regional rivers and streams became impacted by dams, water mills and fish weirs resulting in changes in morphology, hydrology and ecological functioning. We hypothesise that the development and growth of cities in this region necessitated (1) efficient navigability of rivers linking them, (2) efficient use of hydropower resources for mills, and (3) significant pollution of surface waters especially with the beginning of industrial development. We analyse these hypotheses by means of three regional examples and delineate the effects of human uses on selected surface water bodies. Understanding the effects of these historic modifications of surface water supports the identification of options for a sustainable use of surface waters that are currently still subjected to multiple uses but face a significant decrease in discharge due to climate change.
