Abstract: PLATO (PLAnetary Transits and Oscillations of stars) is ESA's M3 mission designed to detect and characterise extrasolar planets and perform asteroseismic monitoring of a large number of stars. PLATO will detect small planets (down to <2 R_(Earth)) around bright stars (<11 mag), including terrestrial planets in the habitable zone of solar-like stars. With the complement of radial velocity observations from the ground, planets will be characterised for their radius, mass, and age with high accuracy (5 %, 10 %, 10 % for an Earth-Sun combination respectively). PLATO will provide us with a large-scale catalogue of well-characterised small planets up to intermediate orbital periods, relevant for a meaningful comparison to planet formation theories and to better understand planet evolution. It will make possible comparative exoplanetology to place our Solar System planets in a broader context. In parallel, PLATO will study (host) stars using asteroseismology, allowing us to determine the stellar properties with high accuracy, substantially enhancing our knowledge of stellar structure and evolution. The payload instrument consists of 26 cameras with 12cm aperture each. For at least four years, the mission will perform high-precision photometric measurements. Here we review the science objectives, present PLATO's target samples and fields, provide an overview of expected core science performance as well as a description of the instrument and the mission profile at the beginning of the serial production of the flight cameras. PLATO is scheduled for a launch date end 2026. This overview therefore provides a summary of the mission to the community in preparation of the upcoming operational phases.

Abstract: Although the LHC experiments have searched for and excluded many proposed new particles up to masses close to 1 TeV, there are many scenarios that are difficult to address at a hadron collider. This talk will review a number of these scenarios and present the expectations for searches at an electron-positron collider such as the International Linear Collider. Abstract: The two-planet transiting system LHS 1140 has been extensively observed since its discovery in 2017, notably with $Spitzer$, HST, TESS, and ESPRESSO, placing strong constraints on the parameters of the M4.5 host star and its small temperate exoplanets, LHS 1140 b and c. Here, we reanalyse the ESPRESSO observations of LHS 1140 with the novel line-by-line framework designed to fully exploit the radial velocity content of a stellar spectrum while being resilient to outlier measurements. The improved radial velocities, combined with updated stellar parameters, consolidate our knowledge on the mass of LHS 1140 b (5.60$\pm$0.19 M$_{\oplus}$) and LHS 1140 c (1.91$\pm$0.06 M$_{\oplus}$) with unprecedented precision of 3%. Transits from $Spitzer$, HST, and TESS are jointly analysed for the first time, allowing us to refine the planetary radii of b (1.730$\pm$0.025 R$_{\oplus}$) and c (1.272$\pm$0.026 R$_{\oplus}$). Stellar abundance measurements of refractory elements (Fe, Mg and Si) obtained with NIRPS are used to constrain the internal structure of LHS 1140 b. This planet is unlikely to be a rocky super-Earth as previously reported, but rather a mini-Neptune with a $\sim$0.1% H/He envelope by mass or a water world with a water-mass fraction between 9 and 19% depending on the atmospheric composition and relative abundance of Fe and Mg. While the mini-Neptune case would not be habitable, a water-abundant LHS 1140 b potentially has habitable surface conditions according to 3D global climate models, suggesting liquid water at the substellar point for atmospheres with relatively low CO$_2$ concentration, from Earth-like to a few bars., Comment: 31 pages, 18 figures, accepted for publication in ApJL

Abstract: We report the discovery and validation of two long-period giant exoplanets orbiting the early K dwarf TOI-4600 (V=12.6, T=11.9), first detected using observations from the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) by the TESS Single Transit Planet Candidate Working Group (TSTPC-WG). The inner planet, TOI-4600 b, has a radius of 6.80$\pm$0.31 R$_{\oplus}$ and an orbital period of 82.69 d. The outer planet, TOI-4600 c, has a radius of 9.42$\pm$0.42 R$_{\oplus}$ and an orbital period of 482.82 d, making it the longest-period confirmed or validated planet discovered by TESS to date. We combine TESS photometry and ground-based spectroscopy, photometry, and high-resolution imaging to validate the two planets. With equilibrium temperatures of 347 K and 191 K, respectively, TOI-4600 b and c add to the small but growing population of temperate giant exoplanets that bridge the gap between hot/warm Jupiters and the solar system's gas giants. TOI-4600 is a promising target for further transit and precise RV observations to measure masses and orbits for the planets as well as search for additional non-transiting planets. Additionally, with Transit Spectroscopy Metric (TSM) values of $\sim$30, both planets are amenable for atmospheric characterization with JWST. Abstract: Patients with autoimmune polyendocrinopathy syndrome type 1 (APS-1) caused by autosomal recessive AIRE deficiency produce autoantibodies that neutralize type I interferons (IFNs)1,2, conferring a predisposition to life-threatening COVID-19 pneumonia3. Here we report that patients with autosomal recessive NIK or RELB deficiency, or a specific type of autosomal-dominant NF-κB2 deficiency, also have neutralizing autoantibodies against type I IFNs and are at higher risk of getting life-threatening COVID-19 pneumonia. In patients with autosomal-dominant NF-κB2 deficiency, these autoantibodies are found only in individuals who are heterozygous for variants associated with both transcription (p52 activity) loss of function (LOF) due to impaired p100 processing to generate p52, and regulatory (IκBδ activity) gain of function (GOF) due to the accumulation of unprocessed p100, therefore increasing the inhibitory activity of IκBδ (hereafter, p52LOF/IκBδGOF). By contrast, neutralizing autoantibodies against type I IFNs are not found in individuals who are heterozygous for NFKB2 variants causing haploinsufficiency of p100 and p52 (hereafter, p52LOF/IκBδLOF) or gain-of-function of p52 (hereafter, p52GOF/IκBδLOF). In contrast to patients with APS-1, patients with disorders of NIK, RELB or NF-κB2 have very few tissue-specific autoantibodies. However, their thymuses have an abnormal structure, with few AIRE-expressing medullary thymic epithelial cells. Human inborn errors of the alternative NF-κB pathway impair the development of AIRE-expressing medullary thymic epithelial cells, thereby underlying the production of autoantibodies against type I IFNs and predisposition to viral diseases.

Abstract: Abstract HROB promotes the MCM8-9 helicase in DNA damage response. To understand how HROB activates MCM8-9, we defined their interaction interface. We showed that HROB makes important yet transient contacts with both MCM8 and MCM9, and binds the MCM8-9 heterodimer with the highest affinity. MCM8-9-HROB prefer branched DNA structures, and display low DNA unwinding processivity. MCM8-9 unwinds DNA as a hexamer that assembles from dimers on DNA in the presence of ATP. The hexamer involves two repeating protein-protein interfaces between the alternating MCM8 and MCM9 subunits. One of these interfaces is quite stable and forms an obligate heterodimer across which HROB binds. The other interface is labile and mediates hexamer assembly, independently of HROB. The ATPase site formed at the labile interface contributes disproportionally more to DNA unwinding than that at the stable interface. Here, we show that HROB promotes DNA unwinding downstream of MCM8-9 loading and ring formation on ssDNA.

The emphasis is on elucidating how manipulating synthetic parameters, such as precursor concentration, reductant agent properties, temperature, time, and the presence of stabilizing agents, can provide additional avenues for refining the performance in terms of size and morphology. Through the analysis of each variable, we illustrate the methodology for synthesizing well-controlled nickel nanoparticles, showcasing the ability to exert precision over their composition, size, and surface morphology.

15. Glycolytic modulations and antioxidant capacity in Amazonian fish, Bryconops giacopinii (Characiformes: Iguanodectidae), living at high temperature

Abstract: Abstract Temperature is projected to continue increasing in the upcoming years. The effects of temperature warming in deforested stream populations have not been addressed yet and are a promising area to understand the consequences of increased temperature on fish physiology. Therefore, the aims of this study were to determine the manner in which Bryconops giacopinii from deforested habitat modulates the LDH kinetics in response to warming and whether the antioxidant system is able to withstand thermal stress. We collected individuals from two roadside streams (deforested) and one forested stream and measured the LDH kinetics parameters (Vmax and Km) for pyruvate and lactate, measured the total ROS production, and measured the activity of antioxidant enzymes and the oxidative stress biomarker. Our results showed lower affinity and higher LDH activity for lactate oxidation in road-side populations, suggesting that populations living in high temperatures use lactate as aerobic fuel. Besides, there was an increase in ROS production, and CAT and GSH levels in road-side populations, but not LPO levels, suggesting that B. giacopinni is able to neutralize the ROS production with the antioxidant systems. Our results bring important findings in the adaptation of this specie to a warm environment.

Abstract: O papel da agricultura familiar vem ganhando força, impulsionado através de debates embasados no desenvolvimento rural sustentável, na geração de trabalho e renda, contribuindo para a segurança alimentar. A piscicultura orgânica é uma atividade que pode ser desenvolvida por estes agricultores na promoção da sustentabilidade. Nesta perspectiva, o objetivo deste trabalho é analisar a viabilidade econômica/financeira, ambiental e social da produção de peixe em sistema orgânico em viveiros escavados com base em um estudo de caso. A metodologia adotada para alcançar os objetivos tem caráter exploratório e descritivo combinando pesquisa bibliográfica sobre estudos de análises da produção orgânica em geral e na piscicultura com estudo de caso. Em um período de dezesseis meses foi acompanhada a produção em sistema de policultivo de peixes, orgânico, utilizando alimentos naturais e provenientes da propriedade. Nas análises foram utilizadas técnicas de análise de viabilidade econômica: Valor Presente Líquido (VPL); Payback descontado (PB); Taxa Interna de Retorno (TIR); e Índice de Lucratividade (IL). O valor investido nos viveiros foi de R$ 3.220,60. O valor estimado para a comercialização dos peixes foi de R$ 2.477,50. Na análise de viabilidade econômico/financeira os resultados indicam retorno a partir do segundo ciclo produtivo. Na dimensão social se destaca a mão de obra familiar ocupada e cuja maior demanda é no período de implementação, enquanto na manutenção é baixa esta necessidade. Na análise ambiental os resultados indicaram a preservação de recursos naturais, com reaproveitamento de resíduos de alimentos produzidos na propriedade e cuidados com a água e geração de efluentes.

Abstract: El 3 de abril de 1983, Sendero Luminoso asesinó brutalmente a 69 personas en Santiago de Lucanamarca y pueblos aledaños. Este ensayo analiza dos documentales que tratan sobre la consecuencias de esta masacre: Tarea pendiente (2003), de Carlos Cárdenas, y Lucanamarca (2008), de Carlos Cárdenas y Héctor Gálvez. En la primera parte, se muestra cómo estos documentales se producen en dos momentos irruptores de la memoria del Perú posconflicto y son representativos de su género. En la segunda parte, centrándose en Lucanamarca, se muesta cómo, a pesar de compartir cierto espíritu de responsabilidad social con otros documentales sobre el conflicto armado interno que se produjeron y estrenaron en la década del dos mil, Lucanamarca presenta una narrativa contrahegemónica pues se aleja de la narrativa de una “memoria cívica”.

18. MABE PEARLS FROM THE PEARL OYSTER PIERIA STERNA (GOULD, 1851) IN A TROPICAL ESTUARY

Abstract: The quality of mabe pearls from pearl oysters, Pteria sterna, produced in the Chone River Estuary, Ecuador, was evaluated. Adult oysters (70-75 mm total length) were graited with half-pearl nuclei and then maintained in suspended culture conditions in lantern nets at a density of 20 organisms/level. Results showed that the culture conditions generated a great negative influence on the development of nucleated organisms, which resulted in high mortalities and little pearl production. Despite the high mortality, the oysters that managed to survive the second month (22%), produced mabe pearls with nacre thickness deposited on the top of the implanted nucleus close to 0.70mm, the majority (>25%) being of intermediate quality (A and B), according to classic classification criteria (size, luster, impurities, roundness), followed by noncommercial pearls (10%-27%) and 15% high-AA quality mabe pearls. Abstract: Based on recently-taken and archival HARPS, FEROS and HIRES radial velocities (RVs), we present evidence for a new planet orbiting the first ascent red giant star HD33142 (with an improved mass estimate of 1.52$\pm$0.03 M$_\odot$), already known to host two planets. We confirm the Jovian mass planets HD33142 b and c with periods of $P_{\rm b}$ = 330.0$_{-0.4}^{+0.4}$ d and $P_{\rm c}$ = 810.2$_{-4.2}^{+3.8}$ d and minimum dynamical masses of $m_{\rm b}\sin{i}$ = 1.26$_{-0.05}^{+0.05}$ M$_{\rm Jup}$ and $m_{\rm c}\sin{i}$ = 0.89$_{-0.05}^{+0.06}$ M$_{\rm Jup}$. Furthermore, our periodogram analysis of the precise RVs shows strong evidence for a short-period Doppler signal in the residuals of a two-planet Keplerian fit, which we interpret as a third, Saturn-mass planet with $m_\mathrm{d}\sin{i}$ = 0.20$_{-0.03}^{+0.02}$ M$_{\rm Jup}$ on a close-in orbit with an orbital period of $P_{\rm d}$ =89.9$_{-0.1}^{+0.1}$ d. We study the dynamical behavior of the three-planet system configurations with an N-body integration scheme, finding it long-term stable with the planets alternating between low and moderate eccentricities episodes. We also performed N-body simulations, including stellar evolution and second-order dynamical effects such as planet-stellar tides and stellar mass-loss on the way to the white dwarf phase. We find that planets HD33142 b, c and d are likely to be engulfed near the tip of the red giant branch phase due to tidal migration. These results make the HD33142 system an essential benchmark for the planet population statistics of the multiple-planet systems found around evolved stars., Comment: Accepted for publication in AJ

Abstract: O artigo apresenta uma Revisão Sistemática da Literatura (RSL) através da Bibliometria, que visou investigar de que forma a Realidade Aumentada (RA) é aplicada no ensino de geometria no Ensino médio. A RSL teve como base de dados o Portal de Teses e Dissertações da Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Nível Superior (CAPES), no qual foram estabelecidas palavras chaves, bem como o período que foi considerado (2018 – 2020). O objetivo geral é encontrar trabalhos sobre Realidade Aumentada e compreender as contribuições da abordagem CTS (Ciência, Sociedade e Tecnologia). Foi encontrado um total de cento e quarenta e sete trabalhos entre teses e dissertações, sendo que apenas sete versavam diretamente sobre Realidade Aumentada e ensino de Geometria Espacial. Os resultados apontam uma grande defasagem quanto ao número de trabalhos em RA para o ensino de geometria, evidenciando assim a importância de fazer uso da uma abordagem de CTS no ensino de matemática.

23. Gamification Intensity in Web-Based Virtual Training Environments and Its Effect on Learning

Abstract: Gamification approaches to learning use game-inspired design elements to improve learning. Given manifold design options to implement gamification in virtual environments, an important but underexplored research area is how the composition of gamification elements affects learning. To advance research in this area, we systematically identified key design elements that have shown promise in leading to positive learning results. We then conducted an experiment in which we varied gamification intensity in web-based virtual training environments for a procedural industrial task. In total, 355 participants were divided into a baseline group without gamification, a basic, and an advanced gamification group. Analysis of participants' learning included learning outcomes (time-to-completion and number of mistakes), affective learning factors (motivation, self-efficacy, and satisfaction), learning system usability, and perceived cognitive load throughout the learning process. The results did not show any statistically significant differences between the lower and higher levels of gamification intensity. Conversely, we found that participants' computer gaming habits and technical equipment (display size and computer pointing device) significantly influenced learning.

Abstract: ABSTRACT: The Amazonian manatee (Trichechusinunguis) is an aquatic mammal threatened with extinction. However, few studies have investigated the pathogens in this species, which may affect both animal and human health. This study aimed to evaluate the frequency, distribution, and patterns of antimicrobial susceptibility of Staphylococcus spp. and Escherichiacoli colonizing the nasal and rectal cavities of Amazonian manatees kept in captivity at the National Institute for Amazonian Research (INPA) in the state of Amazonas, Brazil. Rectal and nasal swabs from 44 manatees of different ages were used in this study. The genus Staphylococcus was isolated from the nasal swabs of 32 (72.7%) animals, with two individuals harboring more than one species of Staphylococcus. S. sciuri was the most commonly isolated species. Resistance to penicillin was observed in 13 (40.6%) isolates, more frequent than the other antimicrobials tested (P = 0.01). E. coli was isolated from the rectal swabs of all animals, with phylogroup B1 being the most frequent among the strains obtained (P = 0.0008). Four isolates (6.8%) were positive for virulence factors, three of which were classified as enterotoxigenicE. coli (ETEC) and one as enteropathogenicE. coli (EPEC). To our knowledge, this is the first study to evaluate Staphylococcus spp. and E. coli in Amazonian manatee samples. This study revealed nasal colonization by Staphylococcus spp., mainly S. sciuri, and diarrheagenicE. coli isolates, including antimicrobial-resistant strains.

Abstract: The two-planet transiting system LHS 1140 has been extensively observed since its discovery in 2017, notably with Spitzer, HST, TESS, and ESPRESSO, placing strong constraints on the parameters of the M4.5 host star and its small temperate exoplanets, LHS 1140 b and c. Here, we reanalyze the ESPRESSO observations of LHS 1140 with the novel line-by-line framework designed to fully exploit the radial velocity content of a stellar spectrum while being resilient to outlier measurements. The improved radial velocities, combined with updated stellar parameters, consolidate our knowledge of the mass of LHS 1140 b (5.60 ± 0.19 M _⊕ ) and LHS 1140 c (1.91 ± 0.06 M _⊕ ) with an unprecedented precision of 3%. Transits from Spitzer, HST, and TESS are jointly analyzed for the first time, allowing us to refine the planetary radii of b (1.730 ± 0.025 R _⊕ ) and c (1.272 ± 0.026 R _⊕ ). Stellar abundance measurements of refractory elements (Fe, Mg, and Si) obtained with NIRPS are used to constrain the internal structure of LHS 1140 b. This planet is unlikely to be a rocky super-Earth, as previously reported, but rather a mini-Neptune with a ∼0.1% H/He envelope by mass or a water world with a water-mass fraction between 9% and 19%, depending on the atmospheric composition and relative abundance of Fe and Mg. While the mini-Neptune case would not be habitable, a water-abundant LHS 1140 b potentially has habitable surface conditions according to 3D global climate models, suggesting liquid water at the substellar point for atmospheres with relatively low CO _2 concentration, from Earth-like to a few bars.

Abstract: O contexto da educação básica brasileira caracteriza-se, de modo geral, na atuação de docentes com descompassos formativos, que ministram aulas de diversas disciplinas, no caso dos anos iniciais do ensino fundamental, ou que lecionam disciplinas diversas de sua área de formação, no caso das séries finais e ensino médio. Nessa linha, diversos estudos apontam para a evidência de lacunas e imprecisões conceituais no planejamento de intervenções didáticas, devido ao precário desenvolvimento profissional. Desse modo, o presente artigo traz uma revisão teórica sistemática sobre o tema relacionado aos conhecimentos profissionais do magistério e busca contribuir com tal debate, trazendo como resultado a proposta de uma visão do processo de construção de saberes docentes com base em modelos do conhecimento pedagógico de conteúdo articulados com os processos de criação vigotskianos. Tal proposta possibilitou possíveis implicações das articulações apresentadas em associação com as pesquisas relacionadas à formação docente, bem como com propostas formativas, que levem em consideração o contexto cultural do professor, especificamente seus esquemas repertoriais, aqui representados pelo espectro criativo. Desse modo, pretende-se que os contextos formativos utilizem e incrementem o repertório professoral, repertório este fundamental para o desenvolvimento de novos Conhecimentos Pedagógicos de Conteúdo em um caráter transformativo, possibilitando práticas que permitam o desenvolvimento profissional docente.

Abstract: IntroductionZika virus infection during pregnancy causes fetal microcephaly and brain damage. Congenital Zika syndrome (CZS) is characterized by systemic involvement with diffuse muscle impairment, a high frequency of arthrogryposis, and microphthalmia. Cardiac impairment in CZS has rarely been evaluated. Our study assessed morphology and biventricular cardiac function in children with CZS and advanced neurological dysfunction.MethodsThis cross-sectional study was conducted on 52 children with CZS (Zika group; ZG) and 25 healthy children (control group; CG) in Paraiba, Brazil. Clinical evaluation, electrocardiogram (EKG), and transthoracic echocardiogram (TTE) were performed on all children. Additionally, troponin I and natriuretic peptide type B (BNP) levels, the degree of cerebral palsy, and neuroimaging findings were assessed in the ZG group.ResultsThe median age of the study population was 5 years in both groups, and 40.4% (ZG) and 60% (CG) were female. The most prevalent electrocardiographic alteration was sinus arrhythmia in both the ZG (n = 9, 17.3%) and CG (n = 4, 16%). The morphological parameters adjusted for Z score were as follows: left ventricular (LV) end-diastolic diameter in ZG: -2.36 [-5.10, 2.63] vs. CG: -1.07 [-3.43, 0.61], pConclusionA reduction in cardiac dimensions and functional changes were found in CZS patients, based on the TAPSE, S' of the RV, and MAPSE, suggesting the importance of cardiac evaluation and follow-up in this group of patients.

Abstract: Abstract Diagnostic and decision-making processes in the 2019 Coronavirus treatment have combined new standards using patient chest images, clinical and laboratory data. This work presents a systematic review aimed at studying the Artificial Intelligence (AI) approaches to the patients’ diagnosis or evolution with Coronavirus 2019. Five electronic databases were searched, from December 2019 to October 2020, considering the beginning of the pandemic when there was no vaccine influencing the exploration of Artificial Intelligence-based techniques. The first search collected 839 papers. Next, the abstracts were reviewed, and 138 remained after the inclusion/exclusion criteria was performed. After thorough reading and review by a second group of reviewers, 64 met the study objectives. These papers were carefully analyzed to identify the AI techniques used to interpret the images, clinical and laboratory data, considering a distribution regarding two variables: (i) diagnosis or outcome and (ii) the type of data: clinical, laboratory, or imaging (chest computed tomography, chest X-ray, or ultrasound). The data type most used was chest CT scans, followed by chest X-ray. The chest CT scan was the only data type that was used for diagnosis, outcome, or both. A few works combine Clinical and Laboratory data, and the most used laboratory tests were C-reactive protein. AI techniques have been increasingly explored in medical image annotation to overcome the need for specialized manual work. In this context, 25 machine learning (ML) techniques with a highest frequency of usage were identified, ranging from the most classic ones, such as Logistic Regression, to the most current ones, such as those that explore Deep Learning. Most imaging works explored convolutional neural networks (CNN), such as VGG and Resnet. Then transfer learning which stands out among the techniques related to deep learning has the second highest frequency of use. In general, classification tasks adopted two or three datasets. COVID-19 related data is present in all papers, while pneumonia is the most common non-COVID-19 class among them.

47. ILC as a SUSY discovery and precision instrument

Abstract: Data from the LHC at 7, 8, and 13 TeV have so far yielded no evidence for new particles beyond the 125 GeV Higgs boson; in particular, there have been no signs of SUSY. However, the complementary nature of physics with $e^+e^-$ collisions still offers many interesting scenarios in which SUSY can be discovered at the ILC. These scenarios take advantage of the capability of $e^+e^-$ collisions to observe events with missing four-momentum -- a signature not available at hadron colliders, where only transverse imbalance is observable. Due to low backgrounds and trigger-less operation, detectors at $e^+e^-$ colliders can observe events with much less visible energy than what is possible at hadron colliders. In this contribution, we will present detailed simulation studies done with the ILD concept at the ILC. These studies include simulation of the full SM background, as well as realistic accelerator conditions. We will show results both on expected discovery and exclusion reaches for the most challenging SUSY channels, such as higgsinos or winos at low mass differences. Evaluations of precision of model-parameter measurements, in case of discovery, will also be given. We also report on how such measurements can be used to put constraints on parts of the sparticle-spectrum beyond direct reach, and to discriminate between different models of SUSY breaking at high scales.

Abstract: We study Higgs inflation in the Palatini formulation with the renormalisation group improved potential in the case when loop corrections generate a feature similar to an inflection point. Assuming that there is a threshold correction for the Higgs quartic coupling $\lambda$ and the top Yukawa coupling $y_t$, we scan the three-dimensional parameter space formed by the two jumps and the non-minimal coupling $\xi$. The spectral index $n_s$ can take any value in the observationally allowed range. The lower limit for the running is $\alpha_s>-3.5\times10^{-3}$, and $\alpha_s$ can be as large as the observational upper limit. Running of the running is small. The tensor-to-scalar ratio is $2.2\times 10^{-17}

50. Academic Staff Induction and Assessment on Implementing Experiential Learning and Reflective Practice

Abstract: Experiential learning and reflective practice are two effective key learning and teaching strategies that many successful teachers employ as learner-centred education practices. It has been proven that many students appreciate the meaningful learning received through a learner-centred classroom environment. The aim of this paper is to share the findings of an induction programme focussing on experiential learning and reflective practice, which was designed to enhance the importance of transforming teacher-centred practice into learner-centred practice, with the teacher taking on the role of facilitator. The objectives of this induction programme were to help staff in understanding and incorporating experiential learning models in their teaching practice at a New Zealand tertiary institution. The paper contains a qualitative analysis of staff perspectives on experiential learning practice taken from their answers to a questionnaire, which followed an online Moodle course. It also contains a quantitative analysis of the data gathered from classroom observations using a digital classroom observation tool for assessment. The results showed that, although theoretical awareness about experiential learning was not a problem for new academic staff, its practical application was not always fully achieved. Even when lecturers were successfully implementing experiential learning activities in their classes, they were not incorporating reflective practice as part of a complete process. A more conscious incorporation of reflective practice by the academic staff in their classes, will ultimately help students to continue learning through experiences and reflection in their self-directed learning journeys.
