JUNO is a huge neutrino detector that will use 20 kton of organic liquid scintillator as its detection medium. The scintillator is a mixture of linear alkyl benzene (LAB), 2.5 g/L of 2,5-diphenyloxazole (PPO) and 3 mg/L of 1,4-Bis(2-methylstyryl)benzene (Bis-MSB). The main goal of JUNO is to determine the Neutrino Mass Ordering [1, 2, 3]. In order to achieve this purpose, good energy and position reconstruction is required, hence a complete understanding of the optical characteristics of the liquid scintillator is mandatory. In this paper we present the measurements on the JUNO scintillator emission spectrum, absorption length and fluorescence time distribution performed respectively with a spectrofluorimeter, a spectrophotometer and a custom made setup

In this work we provide a model-independent experimental evaluation of the degree of isospin equilibration taking place in $^{58,64}$Ni+$^{58,64}$Ni collisions at 32 MeV/nucleon across varying reaction centralities. This result has been obtained by combining the complementary information provided by two different datasets, sharing common characteristics. The first dataset has been acquired with the INDRA setup and has been used to implement a model-independent reconstruction of the impact parameter. The second dataset has been acquired in the first experimental campaign of the coupled INDRA-FAZIA apparatus at GANIL. The neutron-to-proton content of the quasiprojectile remnant measured by FAZIA has been employed as isospin observable. The effect of isospin diffusion has been evidenced by means of the isospin transport ratio, reported as a function of the impact parameter of the collision. The evolution towards isospin equilibration from semiperipheral to more central collisions is clearly extracted. This experimental result, expanding our previous works (Phys. Rev. C 106, 024603 (2022) and Phys. Rev. C 108, 054611 (2023)), can be compared with the predictions of any transport model, and can thus be used to set constraints on the behavior of the symmetry energy term of the nuclear Equation of State at sub- to saturation densities.

Several neutrino detectors, KamLAND, Daya Bay, Double Chooz, RENO, and the forthcoming large-scale JUNO, rely on liquid scintillator to detect reactor antineutrino interactions. In this context, inverse beta decay represents the golden channel for antineutrino detection, providing a pair of correlated events, thus a strong experimental signature to distinguish the signal from a variety of backgrounds. However, given the low cross-section of antineutrino interactions, the development of a powerful event selection algorithm becomes imperative to achieve effective discrimination between signal and backgrounds. In this study, we introduce a machine learning (ML) model to achieve this goal: a fully connected neural network as a powerful signal-background discriminator for a large liquid scintillator detector. We demonstrate, using the JUNO detector as an example, that, despite the already high efficiency of a cut-based approach, the presented ML model can further improve the overall event selection efficiency. Moreover, it allows for the retention of signal events at the detector edges that would otherwise be rejected because of the overwhelming amount of background events in that region. We also present the first interpretable analysis of the ML approach for event selection in reactor neutrino experiments. The optical and radiochemical purification of the scintillating liquid, which will fill the central detector of the JUNO experiment, plays a crucial role in achieving its scientific goals. Given its gigantic mass and dimensions and an unprecedented target value of about 3% @ 1 MeV in energy resolution, JUNO has set severe requirements on the parameters of its scintillator, such as attenuation length (Lat>20 m at 430 nm), transparency, light yield, and content of radioactive contaminants (238U,232Th<10-15 g/g). To accomplish these needs, the scintillator will be processed using several purification methods, including distillation in partial vacuum and gas stripping, which are performed in two large scale plants installed at the JUNO site. In this paper, layout, operating principles, and technical aspects which have driven the design and construction of the distil- lation and gas stripping plants are reviewed. The distillation is effective in enhancing the optical properties and removing heavy radio-impurities (238U,232Th, 40K), while the stripping process exploits pure water steam and high-purity nitrogen to extract gaseous contaminants (222Rn, 39Ar, 85Kr, O2) from the scintillator. The plant operating parameters have been tuned during the recent com- missioning phase at the JUNO site and several QA/QC measurements and tests have been performed to evaluate the performances of the plants. In the field of rare event physics, it is common to have huge masses of organic liquid scintillator as detection medium. In particular, they are widely used to study neutrino properties or astrophysical neutrinos. Thanks to its safety properties (such as low toxicity and high flash point) and easy scalability, linear alkyl benzene is the most common solvent used to produce liquid scintillators for large mass experiments. The knowledge of the refractive index is a pivotal point to understand the detector response, as this quantity (and its wavelength dependence) affects the Cherenkov radiation and photon propagation in the medium. In this paper, we report the measurement of the refractive index of the JUNO liquid scintillator between 260-1064 nm performed with two different methods (an ellipsometer and a refractometer), with a sub percent level precision. In addition, we used an interferometer to measure the group velocity in the JUNO liquid scintillator and verify the expected value derived from the refractive index measurements., Comment: 6 pages, 9 figures

The emission of the pre-equilibrium particles during nuclear collisions at moderate beam energies is still an open question. This influences the properties of the compound nucleus but also changes the interpretation of the quasi-fission process. A systematic analysis of the data obtained by the FAZIA collaboration during a recent experiment with a neutron rich projectile is presented. The full range of charged particles detected in the experiment is within the limit of isotopic resolution of the FAZIA detector. Quasi-projectile (QP) fragments were detected in majority thanks to the forward angular acceptance of the experimental setup which was confirmed by introducing cuts based on the HIPSE event generator calculations. The main goal was to compare the experimental results with the HIPSE simulations after introducing these cuts to investigate the influence of the n-rich entrance channel on the QP fragment properties. More specifically, the lowering of N/Z of QP fragments with beam energy was found to be present since the initial phase of the reaction. Thus, pre-equilibrium emissions might be a possible candidate to explain such an effect., Comment: 10 pages, 10 figures

A detailed knowledge of the decay properties of the so called Hoyle state in the $^{12}$C nucleus ($E_x=7.654$ MeV, $0^+$) is required to calculate the rate at which carbon is forged in typical red-giant stars. This paper reports on a new almost background-free measurement of the radiative decay branching ratio of the Hoyle state using advanced charged particle coincidence techniques. The exploitation, for the first time in a similar experiment, of a bidimensional map of the coincidence efficiency allows to reach an unitary value and, consequently, to strongly reduce sources of systematic uncertainties. The present results suggest a value of the radiative branching ratio of $\Gamma_{rad}/\Gamma_{tot}=4.2(6)\cdot10^{-4}$. This finding helps to resolve the tension between recent data published in the literature.

This article presents an investigation of isospin equilibration in cross-bombarding $^{40,48}$Ca$+^{40,48}$Ca reactions at 35 MeV/nucleon, by comparing experimental data with filtered transport model calculations. Isospin diffusion is studied using the evolution of the isospin transport ratio with centrality. The asymmetry parameter $\delta=(N-Z)/A$ of the quasiprojectile (QP) residue is used as isospin-sensitive observable, while a recent method for impact parameter reconstruction is used for centrality sorting. A benchmark of global observables is proposed to assess the relevance of the antisymmetrized molecular dynamics (AMD) model, coupled to GEMINI++, in the study of dissipative collisions. Our results demonstrate the importance of considering cluster formation to reproduce observables used for isospin transport and centrality studies. Within the AMD model, we prove the applicability of the impact parameter reconstruction method, enabling a direct comparison to the experimental data for the investigation of isospin diffusion. For both, we evidence a tendency to isospin equilibration with an impact parameter decreasing from 9 to 3 fm, while the full equilibration is not reached. A weak sensitivity to the stiffness of the equation of state employed in the model is also observed, with a better reproduction of the experimental trend for the neutron-rich reactions.

Nuclear reactors are a source of electron antineutrinos due to the presence of unstable fission products that undergo $\beta^-$ decay. They will be exploited by the JUNO experiment to determine the neutrino mass ordering and to get very precise measurements of the neutrino oscillation parameters. This requires the reactor antineutrino spectrum to be characterized as precisely as possible both through high resolution measurements, as foreseen by the TAO experiment, and detailed simulation models. In this paper we present a benchmark analysis utilizing Serpent Monte Carlo simulations in comparison with real pressurized water reactor spent fuel data. Our objective is to study the accuracy of fission fraction predictions as a function of different reactor simulation approximations. Then, utilizing the BetaShape software, we construct fissile antineutrino spectra using the summation method, thereby assessing the influence of simulation uncertainties on reactor antineutrino spectrum.

The experimental evidence for the $\alpha$ Boson gas state in the $^{11}$C+$^{12}$C$\rightarrow$$^{23}$Mg$^{\ast}$ fusion evaporation reaction is presented. By measuring the $\alpha$ emission spectrum with multiplicity 2 and 3, we provide insight into the existence of a three-body force among $\alpha$ particles. The observed spectrum exhibited distinct tails corresponding to $\alpha$ particles emitted in pairs and triplets consistent well with the model-calculations of AV18-UX and chiral effective field theory of NV2-3-la*, indicating the formation of $\alpha$ clusters with three-body force in the Boson gas state., Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures

The correlation of $\alpha\alpha$ was probed via measuring the transverse momentum $p_{T}$ and width $\delta p_{T}$ of one $\alpha$, for the first time, which represents the spatial and dynamical essentialities of the initial coupling state in $^{8}$Be nucleus. The weighted interaction vertex of 3$\alpha$ reflected by the magnitudes of their relative momentums and relative emission angles proves the isosceles triangle configuration for 3$\alpha$ at the high excited energy analogous Hoyle states., Comment: 8 pages, 9 figures

The enhancement of $J^{\pi}(T)$=3$^{+}$(0) state with isospin $T=0$ excited by the tensor force in the free $^{6}$Li nucleus has been observed, for the first time, relative to a shrinkable excitation in the $^{6}$Li cluster component inside its host nucleus. Comparatively, the excitation of $J^{\pi}(T)$=0$^{+}$(1) state with isospin $T=1$ for these two $^{6}$Li formations take on an approximately equal excitation strength. The mechanism of such tensor force effect was proposed due to the intensive nuclear medium role on isospin $T$=0 state., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

An investigation of the quasiprojectile breakup channel in semiperipheral and peripheral collisions of $^{58,64}$Ni+$^{58,64}$Ni at 32 and 52 MeV/nucleon is presented. Data have been acquired in the first experimental campaign of the INDRA-FAZIA apparatus in GANIL. The effect of isospin diffusion between projectile and target in the two asymmetric reactions has been highlighted by means of the isospin transport ratio technique, exploiting the neutron-to-proton ratio of the quasiprojectile reconstructed from the two breakup fragments. We found evidence that, for the same reaction centrality, a higher degree of relaxation of the initial isospin imbalance is achieved in the breakup channel with respect to the more populated binary output, possibly indicating the indirect selection of specific dynamical features. We have proposed an interpretation based on different average projectile-target contact times related to the two exit channels under investigation, with a longer interaction for the breakup channel. The time information has been extracted from AMD simulations of the studied systems coupled to GEMINI++: the model calculations support the hypothesis hereby presented.

Four different reactions, $^{32}$S+$^{12}$C and $^{20}$Ne+$^{12}$C at 25 and 50 MeV/nucleon, have been measured with the FAZIA detector capable of full isotopic identification of most forward emitted reaction products. Fragment multiplicities, angular distributions and energy spectra have been measured and compared with Monte Carlo simulations, i.e. the antisymmetrized molecular dynamics (AMD) and the heavy-ion phase space exploration (HIPSE) models. These models are combined with two different afterburner codes (HF$l$ and SIMON) to describe the decay of the excited primary fragments. In the case of AMD, the effect of including the clustering and inter-clustering processes to form bound particles and fragments is discussed. A clear confirmation of the role of cluster aggregation in the reaction dynamics and particle production for these light systems, for which the importance of the clustering process increases with bombarding energy, is obtained., Comment: 15 pages, 14 PDF figures

An analysis of the asymmetric reactions $^{40,48}$Ca+$^{12}$C at 25 and 40 MeV/nucleon is presented. Data have been collected with six modules of the FAZIA array. The analysis is focused on the breakup channel of sources produced in dissipative collisions, partially corresponding to incomplete fusion processes. The study has been performed both on detected fragments and on some resonances reconstructed by means of particle-fragment correlations, with a focus on the evolution of the breakup channel with the beam energy and the neutron content of the system, looking in particular at the relative velocity between the breakup fragments. Results show that also Carbon fragments reconstructed by means of particle correlations can be in large part interpreted as the light partner of a scission.

We investigate the isospin transport with 40,48 Ca+ 40,48 Ca reactions at 35 MeV/nucleon, measured with the coupling of the VAMOS high acceptance spectrometer and the INDRA charged particle multidetector. Using the quasi-projectile remnant measured with VAMOS and carefully selected light-charged-particles measured in coincidence with INDRA, a reconstruction method is applied to estimate the excited quasi-projectile (QP) on an event-by-event basis. The isospin diffusion is investigated using the isospin transport ratio with the asymmetry $\delta$ = (N -- Z)/A of the projectile as an isospin-sensitive observable and the total transverse energy of Z $\le$ 2 nuclei for experimental centrality sorting. The experimental isospin transport ratios present, for both the reconstructed QP and its remnant, a clear evolution towards isospin equilibration with increasing dissipation of the collision while the full equilibration is not reached. A smoother evolution with less discrepancies between the two mixed systems in the case of the reconstructed QP is also observed. The isospin migration is investigated using the neutron-to-proton ratio of the light-charged-clusters and the velocity of the QP remnant as a sorting parameter. More particularly, we focused on an angular region centered around the mid-rapidity of the reaction so as to characterize the low-density neck emissions. A systematic neutron-enrichment is observed and interpreted as a consequence of isospin migration, more particularly for the symmetric systems which present no isospin gradient between the projectile and the target. We also noticed that the ^{2}H and ^{4}He particles exhibit very close multiplicities independently of the sorting variable for the symmetric systems.

An investigation of the isospin equilibration process in the reactions $^{58,64}$Ni+$^{58,64}$Ni at two bombarding energies in the Fermi regime ($32\,$MeV/nucleon and $52\,$MeV/nucleon) is presented. Data have been acquired during the first experimental campaign of the coupled INDRA-FAZIA apparatus in GANIL. Selecting from peripheral to semi-central collisions, both the neutron content of the quasiprojectile residue and that of the light ejectiles coming from the quasiprojectile evaporation have been used as probes of the dynamical process of isospin diffusion between projectile and target for the asymmetric systems. The isospin transport ratio technique has been employed. The relaxation of the initial isospin imbalance with increasing centrality has been clearly evidenced. The isospin equilibration appears stronger for the reactions at $32\,$MeV/nucleon, as expected due to the longer projectile-target interaction time than at $52\,$MeV/nucleon. Coherent indications of isospin equilibration come from the quasiprojectile residue characteristics and from particles ascribed to the quasiprojectile decay.

A study of medium-mass heavy-ion reactions leading to two fragments in the exit channel from barrier to 18A MeV is proposed. A special focus is made on fission and quasi-fission for events with two fragments ($Z\geq10$) in the exit channel selected. Reactions induced by $^{129}Xe$ projectiles on $^{nat}Sn$ and on $^{197}Au$ at energies ranging from $8A$ MeV to $18A$ MeV were analyzed. Using the fragment ($Z\geq10$) multiplicity equal to 2, fission and quasi-fission events were studied for the lowest beam energies using the fission fragment charge distributions, the total kinetic energy distribution (TKE) and its standard deviation $\sigma_{TKE}$. For the lighter system it is still possible to observe fission events from incomplete fusion. At variance, for the heavier system, Xenon on gold target only quasi-fission is evidenced. The study of the events characterized by two fragments in the final channel shows that fission, related to fusion in the entrance channel, disappears around 20A MeV for both systems. At lower energies (8A, 12A and 15A MeV) for the Sn target, an evolution with increasing energies towards an asymmetric fission mode is displayed in the fragment charge distributions. This trend can be attributed to the increasing angular momentum as indicated by the out-of-plane angular distribution for light charged particles. The same effect is also observed in the case of the gold target at 15A MeV. However, for this heavier system, a strong memory of the entrance channel leading to quasi-fission is evidenced. A comparison with the Viola systematics, moreover, shows a deviation, greater for the heavier system than for $^{129}Xe+^{nat}Sn$ system. In this article we investigate $^{40,48}$Ca+$^{40,48}$Ca peripheral and semi-peripheral reactions at 35 MeV/nucleon. Data were obtained using the unique coupling of the VAMOS high acceptance spectrometer and the INDRA charged particle multidetector.The spectrometer allowed high resolution measurement of charge, mass and velocity of the cold projectile-like fragment (PLF), while the INDRA detector recorded coincident charged particles with nearly $4\pi$ acceptance.The measured isotopic composition of the PLF identified in VAMOS and the average light charged particle (LCP) multiplicities are promising observables to study the isospin diffusion.The detection of the PLF in coincidence with LCP allows the reconstruction of the mass, charge and excitation energy of the associated initial quasi-projectile nuclei (QP), as well as the extraction of apparent temperatures.We investigate the suitability of the isoscaling method with the PLF and the experimental reconstructed QP.The extracted $\alpha$ and $\Delta$ isoscaling parameters present a dependence on the considered system combination that could justify their use as a surrogate for isospin asymmetry in isospin transport studies.The reconstruction of the QP allows to observe an evolution of the $\alpha/\Delta$ with the size of the QP, the latter being consistent with a strong surface contribution to the symmetry energy term in finite nuclei. This leads to the conclusion that the reconstruction of the primary source is mandatory for the study of the symmetry energy term based on the isoscaling method for such reactions.

We present the second public data release of the Dark Energy Survey, DES DR2, based on optical/near-infrared imaging by the Dark Energy Camera mounted on the 4-m Blanco telescope at Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory in Chile. DES DR2 consists of reduced single-epoch and coadded images, a source catalog derived from coadded images, and associated data products assembled from 6 years of DES science operations. This release includes data from the DES wide-area survey covering ~5000 deg2 of the southern Galactic cap in five broad photometric bands, grizY. DES DR2 has a median delivered point-spread function full-width at half maximum of g= 1.11, r= 0.95, i= 0.88, z= 0.83, and Y= 0.90 arcsec photometric uniformity with a standard deviation of < 3 mmag with respect to Gaia DR2 G-band, a photometric accuracy of ~10 mmag, and a median internal astrometric precision of ~27 mas. The median coadded catalog depth for a 1.95 arcsec diameter aperture at S/N= 10 is g= 24.7, r= 24.4, i= 23.8, z= 23.1 and Y= 21.7 mag. DES DR2 includes ~691 million distinct astronomical objects detected in 10,169 coadded image tiles of size 0.534 deg2 produced from 76,217 single-epoch images. After a basic quality selection, benchmark galaxy and stellar samples contain 543 million and 145 million objects, respectively. These data are accessible through several interfaces, including interactive image visualization tools, web-based query clients, image cutout servers and Jupyter notebooks. Classical novae result from thermonuclear explosions producing several $\gamma$-ray emitters which are prime targets for satellites observing in the MeV range. The early 511 keV gamma-ray emission depends critically on the $^{18}$F(p,$\alpha$)$^{15}$O reaction rate which, despite many experimental and theoretical efforts, still remains uncertain. One of the main uncertainties in the $^{18}$F(p,$\alpha$)$^{15}$O reaction rate is the contribution in the Gamow window of interference between sub-threshold $^{19}$Ne states and known broad states at higher energies. Therefore the goal of this work is to clarify the existence and the nature of these sub-threshold states. States in the $^{19}$Ne compound nucleus were studied at the Tandem-ALTO facility using the $^{19}$F($^3$He,t)$^{19}$Ne charge exchange reaction. Tritons were detected with an Enge Split-pole spectrometer while decaying protons or $\alpha$-particles from unbound $^{19}$Ne states were collected, in coincidence, with a double-sided silicon strip detector array. Angular correlations were extracted and constraints on the spin and parity of decaying states established. The coincidence yield at $E_x$ = 6.29 MeV was observed to be high spin, supporting the conclusion that it is indeed a doublet consisting of high spin and low spin components. Evidence for a broad, low spin state was observed around 6 MeV. Branching ratios were extracted for several states above the proton threshold and were found to be consistent with the literature. R-matrix calculations show the relative contribution of sub-threshold states to the astrophysically important energy region above the proton threshold. The levels schemes of $^{19}$Ne and $^{19}$F are still not sufficiently well known and further studies of the analogue assignments are needed. The tentative broad state at 6 MeV may only play a role if the reduced proton width is large.
