Vibrational Raman scattering -- a process where light exchanges energy with a molecular vibration through inelastic scattering -- is most fundamentally described in a quantum framework where both light and vibration are quantized. When the Raman scatterer is embedded inside a plasmonic nanocavity, as in some sufficiently controlled implementations of surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS), the coupled system realizes an optomechanical cavity, where coherent and parametrically amplified light-vibration interaction becomes a resource for vibrational state engineering and nanoscale nonlinear optics. The purpose of this Perspective is to clarify the connection between the languages and parameters used in the fields of molecular cavity optomechanics (McOM) vs. its conventional, `macroscopic' counterpart, and to summarize the main results achieved so far in McOM and the most pressing experimental and theoretical challenges. We aim to make the theoretical framework of molecular cavity optomechanics practically usable for the SERS and nanoplasmonics community at large. While quality factors ($Q$'s) and mode volumes ($V$'s) essentially describe the performance of a nanocavity in enhancing light-matter interaction, we point to the light-cavity coupling efficiencies ($\eta$'s) and optomechanical cooperativities ($\mathcal{C}$'s) as the key parameters for molecular optomechanics. As an illustration of the significance of these quantities, we investigate the feasibility of observing optomechanically induced transparency with a molecular vibration -- a measurement that would allow for a direct estimate of the optomechanical cooperativity., Comment: Includes an Appendix

Optical sensors offer precision, remote read-out, and immunity to electromagnetic interference but face adoption challenges due to complex and costly readout instrumentation, mostly based on high-resolution. This article challenges the notion that high spectral resolution is necessary for high performance optical sensing. We propose co-optimizing the linewidths of sensor and readout to achieve picometer-level precision using low-resolution multispectral detector arrays and incoherent light sources. This approach is validated in temperature sensing, fiber-tip refractive index sensing, and biosensing, achieving superior precision to high-resolution spectrometers. This paradigm change in readout will enable optical sensing systems with costs and dimensions comparable to electronic sensors.

Localized optical field enhancement enables strong light-matter interactions necessary for efficient manipulation and sensing of light. Specifically, tunable broadband energy localization in nanoscale hotspots offers a wide range of applications in nanophotonics and quantum optics. We experimentally demonstrate a novel principle for the local enhancement of electromagnetic fields, based on strong suppression of backscattering. This is achieved at a designed termination of a topologically non-trivial waveguide that nearly preserves the valley degree of freedom. The symmetry origin of the valley degree of freedom prevents edge states to undergo intervalley scattering at waveguide discontinuities that obey the symmetry of the crystal. Using near-field microscopy, we reveal that this can lead to strong confinement of light at the termination of a topological photonic waveguide, even without breaking time-reversal symmetry. We emphasize the importance of symmetry conservation by comparing different waveguide termination geometries, confirming that the origin of suppressed backscattering lies with the near-conservation of the valley degree of freedom, and show the broad bandwidth of the effect., Comment: Main: 24 pages, 4 figures - Supplementary Materials: 17 pages, 5 figures

We say that a matrix $P$ with non-negative entries majorizes another such matrix $Q$ if there is a stochastic matrix $T$ such that $Q=TP$. We study matrix majorization in large samples and in the catalytic regime in the case where the columns of the matrices need not have equal support, as has been assumed in earlier works. We focus on two cases: either there are no support restrictions (except for requiring a non-empty intersection for the supports) or the final column dominates the others. Using real-algebraic methods, we identify sufficient and almost necessary conditions for majorization in large samples or when using catalytic states under these support conditions. These conditions are given in terms of multi-partite divergences that generalize the R\'enyi divergences. We notice that varying support conditions dramatically affect the relevant set of divergences. We demonstrate coupling of a semiconductor quantum dot (QD) to an optomechanical cavity, mediated by the strain of a nano-mechanical mode. The device comprises an optomechanical photonic crystal nanobeam in GaAs with embedded In(Ga)As QDs. The flexural mechanical mode of the device can be optically driven exploiting the large optomechanical coupling rate of the cavity. The vibrations generate a time-modulated strain field that shifts the quantum dot transition energy. We observe that optical driving of the mechanical mode induces a shift in an excitonic line corresponding to an estimated vacuum strain coupling rate of 214 kHz. Our approach represents an important step towards the use of phonons to couple different on-chip quantum systems.

Low-intensity Transcranial Ultrasonic Stimulation (TUS) is a non-invasive brain stimulation technique enabling cortical and deep brain targeting with unprecedented spatial accuracy. Given the high rate of adoption by new users with varying levels of expertise and interdisciplinary backgrounds, practical guidelines are needed to ensure state-of-the-art TUS application and reproducible outcomes. Therefore, the International Transcranial Ultrasonic Stimulation Safety and Standards (ITRUSST) consortium has formed a subcommittee, endorsed by the International Federation of Clinical Neurophysiology (IFCN), to develop recommendations for best practice in TUS applications in humans. The practical guide presented here provides a brief introduction into ultrasound physics and sonication parameters. It explains the requirements of TUS lab equipment and transducer selection and discusses experimental design and procedures alongside potential confounds and control conditions. Finally, the guide elaborates on essential steps of application planning for stimulation safety and efficacy, as well as considerations when combining TUS with neuroimaging, electrophysiology, or other brain stimulation techniques. Transcranial ultrasonic stimulation (TUS) is rapidly gaining traction for non-invasive human neuromodulation, with a pressing need to establish protocols that maximise neuromodulatory efficacy. In this review, we aggregate and examine empirical evidence for the relationship between tunable TUS parameters and in vitro and in vivo outcomes. Based on this multiscale approach, TUS researchers can make better informed decisions about optimal parameter settings. Importantly, we also discuss the challenges involved in extrapolating results from prior empirical work to future interventions, including the translation of protocols between models and the complex interaction between TUS protocols and the brain. A synthesis of the empirical evidence suggests that larger effects will be observed at lower frequencies within the sub-MHz range, higher intensities and pressures than commonly administered thus far, and longer pulses and pulse train durations. Transcranial ultrasonic stimulation (TUS) has the potential to usher in a new era for human neuroscience by allowing spatially precise and high-resolution non-invasive targeting of both deep and superficial brain regions. Currently, fundamental research on the mechanisms of interaction between ultrasound and neural tissues is progressing in parallel with application-focused research. However, a major hurdle in the wider use of TUS is the selection of optimal parameters to enable safe and effective neuromodulation in humans. In this paper, we will discuss the major factors that determine both the safety and efficacy of TUS. We will discuss the thermal and mechanical biophysical effects of ultrasound, which underlie its biological effects, in the context of their relationships with tunable parameters. This work addresses maximally robust control synthesis under unknown disturbances. We consider a general nonlinear system, subject to a Signal Temporal Logic (STL) specification, and wish to jointly synthesize the maximal possible disturbance bounds and the corresponding controllers that ensure the STL specification is satisfied under these bounds. Many works have considered STL satisfaction under given bounded disturbances. Yet, to the authors' best knowledge, this is the first work that aims to maximize the permissible disturbance set and find the corresponding controllers that ensure satisfying the STL specification with maximum disturbance robustness. We extend the notion of disturbance-robust semantics for STL, which is a property of a specification, dynamical system, and controller, and provide an algorithm to get the maximal disturbance robust controllers satisfying an STL specification using Hamilton-Jacobi reachability. As transcranial ultrasound stimulation (TUS) advances as a precise, non-invasive neuromodulatory method, there is a need for consistent reporting standards to enable comparison and reproducibility across studies. To this end, the International Transcranial Ultrasonic Stimulation Safety and Standards Consortium (ITRUSST) formed a subcommittee of experts across several domains to review and suggest standardised reporting parameters for low intensity TUS, resulting in the guide presented here. The scope of the guide is limited to reporting the ultrasound aspects of a study. The guide and supplementary material provide a simple checklist covering the reporting of: (1) the transducer and drive system, (2) the drive system settings, (3) the free field acoustic parameters, (4) the pulse timing parameters, (5) \emph{in situ} estimates of exposure parameters in the brain, and (6) intensity parameters. Integrated photonics has enabled countless technologies in telecommunications, spectroscopy, metrology, quantum optics, and quantum information processing. Using highly confined guided optical modes is the key that has made integrated circuits possible and has lead to scaling of complex designs, benefiting from their small footprint. At the same time, the field of quantum acoustics has recently gained significant attention due to its various potential advantages over its photonic counterparts, including smaller mode volume, lower energy, and orders of magnitude slower propagation speeds, as well as the potential for interconnecting distinct quantum systems. Developing analogous integrated phononic technology is critical for realizing the full potential of phonons and could lead to groundbreaking new applications, such as scalable quantum computing and hybrid quantum devices. In this work, we demonstrate for the first time a 4-port directional coupler for quantum mechanical excitations - a crucial component for integrated phononic circuits. Adjusting the length of the coupling region allows to realize phononic beam splitters with varying splitting ratios. By sending a single-phonon Fock state onto one of these phononic splitters, we demonstrate the capability of using the directional coupler directly in the quantum regime. Our work provides an essential step towards an integrated phononic platform for both classical and quantum technologies applications.

Transcranial ultrasonic stimulation (TUS) is an emerging technology for non-invasive brain stimulation. In a series of meetings, the International Consortium for Transcranial Ultrasonic Stimulation Safety and Standards (ITRUSST) has established expert consensus on considerations for the biophysical safety of TUS, drawing upon the relevant diagnostic ultrasound literature and regulations. This report reflects a consensus expert opinion and can inform but not replace regulatory guidelines or official international standards. Their establishment by international and national commissions will follow expert consensus. Similarly, this consensus will inform but not replace ethical evaluation, which will consider aspects beyond biophysical safety relevant to burden, risk, and benefit, such as physiological effects and disease-specific interactions. Here, we assume the application of TUS to persons who are not at risk for thermal or mechanical damage, and without ultrasound contrast agents. In this context, we present a concise yet comprehensive set of levels for a nonsignificant risk of TUS application. For mechanical effects, it is safe if the mechanical index (MI) or the mechanical index for transcranial application (MItc) does not exceed 1.9. For thermal effects, it is safe if any of the following three levels are met: a temperature rise less than 2 C, a thermal dose less than 0.25 CEM43, or specific values of the thermal index (TI) for a given exposure time. Signal Temporal Logic (STL) is a formal language over continuous-time signals (such as trajectories of a multi-agent system) that allows for the specification of complex spatial and temporal system requirements (such as staying sufficiently close to each other within certain time intervals). To promote robustness in multi-agent motion planning with such complex requirements, we consider motion planning with the goal of maximizing the temporal robustness of their joint STL specification, i.e. maximizing the permissible time shifts of each agent's trajectory while still satisfying the STL specification. Previous methods presented temporally robust motion planning and control in a discrete-time Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP) optimization scheme. In contrast, we parameterize the trajectory by continuous B\'ezier curves, where the curvature and the time-traversal of the trajectory are parameterized individually. We show an algorithm generating continuous-time temporally robust trajectories and prove soundness of our approach. Moreover, we empirically show that our parametrization realizes this with a considerable speed-up compared to state-of-the-art methods based on constant interval time discretization., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures

We present an experimental investigation of multiple scattering in photonic-crystal-based topological edge states with and without engineered random disorder. We map the spatial distribution of light as it propagates along a so-called bearded interface between two valley photonic crystals which supports both trivial and non-trivial edge states. As the light slows down and/or the disorder increases, we observe the photonic manifestation of Anderson localization, illustrated by the appearance of localized high-intensity field distributions. We extract the backscattering mean free path (BMFP) as a function of frequency, and thereby group velocity, for a range of geometrically engineered random disorders of different types. For relatively high group velocities (with $n_g < 15$), we observe that the BMFP is an order of magnitude higher for the non-trivial edge state than for the trivial. However, the BMFP for the non-trivial mode decreases rapidly with increasing disorder. As the light slows down the BMFP for the trivial state decreases as expected, but the BMFP for the topological state exhibits a non-conventional dependence on the group velocity. Due to the particular dispersion of the topologically non-trivial mode, a range of frequencies exist where two distinct states can have the same group index but exhibit a different BMFP. While the topological mode is not immune to backscattering at disorder that breaks the protecting crystalline symmetry, it displays a larger robustness than the trivial mode for a specific range of parameters in the same structure. The fermionic Kitaev chain is a canonical model featuring topological Majorana zero modes. We report the experimental realization of its bosonic analogue in a nano-optomechanical network where parametric interactions induce two-mode squeezing and beamsplitter coupling among the nanomechanical modes, equivalent to hopping and superconductor pairing in the fermionic case, respectively. We observe several extraordinary phenomena in the bosonic dynamics and transport, including quadrature-dependent chiral amplification, exponential scaling of the gain with system size, and strong sensitivity to boundary conditions. Controlling the interaction phases and amplitudes uncovers a rich dynamical phase diagram that links the observed phenomena to non-Hermitian topological phase transitions. Finally, we present an experimental demonstration of an exponentially enhanced response to a small perturbation as a consequence of non-Hermitian topology. These results represent the demonstration of a novel synthetic phase of matter whose bosonic dynamics do not have fermionic parallels, and establish a powerful system to study non-Hermitian topology and its applications in signal manipulation and sensing., Comment: 21 pages, 5 figures

Plasmon resonances at the surface of plasmonic antennas allow for extremely strong enhancement of Raman scattering. Intrinsic to plasmonics, however, is that extreme field confinement lacks precise spectral control, which would hold great promise in shaping the optomechanical interaction between light and molecular vibrations at will. We demonstrate an experimental platform composed of a plasmonic nanocube-on-mirror antenna coupled to an open, tunable Fabry-Perot microcavity for selective addressing of individual vibrational lines of molecules with strong Raman scattering enhancement. Multiple narrow and intense optical resonances arising from the hybridization of the cavity modes and the plasmonic broad resonance are used to simultaneously enhance the laser pump and the local density of optical states (LDOS) and are characterized using rigorous modal analysis. The versatile bottom-up fabrication approach permits quantitative comparison with the bare nanocube-on-mirror system, both theoretically and experimentally. This shows that the hybrid system allows for similar SERS enhancement ratios with narrow optical modes, paving the way for dynamical back action effects in molecular optomechanics.

Twisted heterostructures of two-dimensional crystals can create a moir\'{e} landscape, which can change the properties of it's parent crystals. However, the reproducibility of manual stacking is far from perfect. Here, the alternated stacking of post-transition metal monochalcogenides and transition metal dichalcogenides in misfit layer compound crystals is used as a moir\'{e} generator. Using X-ray diffraction, the presence of twins with a well-defined small twist angle between them is shown. Due to the twist, the surface electrical potential from the induced ferroelectricity is observed using scanning probe microscopy and electron microscopy.

The control over light propagation and localization in photonic crystals offers wide applications from sensing and on-chip routing to lasing and quantum light-matter interfaces. While in electronic crystals magnetic fields can be used to induce a multitude of unique phenomena, the uncharged nature of photons necessitates alternative approaches to bring about similar control over photons at the nanoscale. Here, we experimentally realize pseudomagnetic fields in two-dimensional photonic crystals through engineered strain of the lattice. Analogous to strained graphene, this induces flat-band Landau levels at discrete energies. We study the spatial and spectral properties of these states in silicon photonic crystals at telecom wavelengths with far-field spectroscopy. Moreover, taking advantage of the photonic crystal's design freedom, we realize domains of opposite pseudomagnetic field and observe topological edge states at their interface. We reveal that the strain-induced states can achieve remarkably high quality factors despite being phase-matched to the radiation continuum. Together with the high density of states and high degeneracy associated with flat bands, this provides powerful prospects for enhancing light-matter interactions, and demonstrates a design principle to govern both on-chip and radiating light fields., Comment: Main: 8 pages, 4 figures - Supplemental: 4 pages, 8 figures
