Abstract

A myriad of factors affect large scale ads delivery systems and influence both user experience and revenue. One such factor is proactive detection and calibration of seasonal advertisements to help with increasing conversion and user satisfaction. In this paper, we present Proactive Detection and Calibration of Seasonal Advertisements (PDCaSA), a research problem that is of interest for the ads ranking and recommendation community, both in the industrial setting as well as in research. Our paper provides detailed guidelines from various angles of this problem tested in, and motivated by a large-scale industrial ads ranking system. We share our findings including the clear statement of the problem and its motivation rooted in real-world systems, evaluation metrics, and sheds lights to the existing challenges, lessons learned, and best practices of data annotation and machine learning modeling to tackle this problem. Lastly, we present a conclusive solution we took during this research exploration: to detect seasonality, we leveraged Multimodal LLMs (MLMs) which on our in-house benchmark achieved 0.97 top F1 score. Based on our findings, we envision MLMs as a teacher for knowledge distillation, a machine labeler, and a part of the ensembled and tiered seasonality detection system, which can empower ads ranking systems with enriched seasonal information.

Abstract

Modern artificial intelligence (AI) systems are powered by foundation models. This paper presents a new set of foundation models, called Llama 3. It is a herd of language models that natively support multilinguality, coding, reasoning, and tool usage. Our largest model is a dense Transformer with 405B parameters and a context window of up to 128K tokens. This paper presents an extensive empirical evaluation of Llama 3. We find that Llama 3 delivers comparable quality to leading language models such as GPT-4 on a plethora of tasks. We publicly release Llama 3, including pre-trained and post-trained versions of the 405B parameter language model and our Llama Guard 3 model for input and output safety. The paper also presents the results of experiments in which we integrate image, video, and speech capabilities into Llama 3 via a compositional approach. We observe this approach performs competitively with the state-of-the-art on image, video, and speech recognition tasks. The resulting models are not yet being broadly released as they are still under development.

In this paper, we define inhomogeneous Graph-Directed (GD) separation conditions for a given inhomogeneous GD Iterated Function Systems (IFS), and estimate the upper box dimension of attractors by the dimension of the condensation set and associated Mauldin-Williams graph dimension. Following some work of Fraser, we also estimate the lower box dimension of attractors generated by inhomogeneous GDIFS. 7. Algorithm Selection for Deep Active Learning with Imbalanced Datasets

Abstract

Label efficiency has become an increasingly important objective in deep learning applications. Active learning aims to reduce the number of labeled examples needed to train deep networks, but the empirical performance of active learning algorithms can vary dramatically across datasets and applications. It is difficult to know in advance which active learning strategy will perform well or best in a given application. To address this, we propose the first adaptive algorithm selection strategy for deep active learning. For any unlabeled dataset, our (meta) algorithm TAILOR (Thompson ActIve Learning algORithm selection) iteratively and adaptively chooses among a set of candidate active learning algorithms. TAILOR uses novel reward functions aimed at gathering class-balanced examples. Extensive experiments in multi-class and multi-label applications demonstrate TAILOR's effectiveness in achieving accuracy comparable or better than that of the best of the candidate algorithms. Abstract

Let T be a self-map on a metric space (X, d). Then T is called the Kannan map if there exists \alpha, 0 < \alpha < 1/2, such that d(T(x), T(y)) <= \alpha[d(x, T(x)) + d(y, T(y))], for all x, y in X. This paper aims to introduce a new method to construct fractal functions using Kannan mappings. First, we give the rigorous construction of fractal functions with the help of the Kannan iterated function system (IFS). We also show the existence of a Borel probability measure supported on the attractor of the Kannan IFS satisfying the strong separation condition. Moreover, we study the smoothness of the constructed fractal functions. Abstract

In this paper, we study the fractal dimension of the graph of a fractal transformation and also determine the quantization dimension of a probability measure supported on the graph of the fractal transformation. Moreover, we estimate the quantization dimension of the invariant measures corresponding to a weighted iterated function system consisting of bi-Lipschitz mappings under the strong open set condition.

Methods: We carried out a retrospective consecutive case review at a tertiary eye care center in North India. Records of all the patients who had undergone scleral buckling (SB) for retinal dialysis-associated rhegmatogenous retinal detachment by VR fellows (with less than 2 years&apos; experience) between January 2017 and January 2020 were reviewed. Results: Fifty-three eyes of 53 patients with a mean age of 20.77 years were analyzed. Of the patients, 73.58% were males. History of eye trauma was present in 71.69% patients. A total of 21 residents operated these 53 eyes. SB was able to achieve retinal attachment in a single surgery in 84.9% (45/53) eyes. Mean preoperative best corrected visual acuity was 1.9 ± 1.05 log of minimum angle of resolution (logMAR), which improved postoperatively to 1.07 ± 0.72 logMAR (P < 0.001). Surgical success rate was 85.71% (24/28) in eyes with no proliferative vitreoretinopathy (PVR), 66.66% (2/3) in eyes with PVR-A, 91.66% (11/12) in eyes with PVR-B, and 80% (8/10) in eyes with PVR-C1. Fifty-two eyes had a single dialysis and one eye had two separate dialysis. Six eyes had giant retinal dialysis (dialysis greater than 3 clock hours) and all were due to trauma. Five patients had retinal dialysis in the fellow eye and were diagnosed with bilateral idiopathic retinal dialysis. Conclusion: Scleral buckling is a safe and effective management for retinal dialysis retinal detachment even in the hands of VR fellows under training. Abstract

In this paper, we introduce the concept of the $\alpha$-fractal function and fractal approximation for a set-valued continuous map defined on a closed and bounded interval of real numbers. Also, we study some properties of such fractal functions. Further, we estimate the perturbation error between the given continuous function and its $\alpha$-fractal function. Additionally, we define a new graph of a set-valued function different from the standard graph introduced in the literature and establish some bounds on the fractal dimension of the newly defined graph of some special classes of set-valued functions. Also, we explain the need to define this new graph with examples. In the sequel, we prove that this new graph of an $\alpha$-fractal function is an attractor of an iterated function system.

Abstract

PURPOSE: To demonstrate the utility of operating on the temporal trabecular meshwork with in vivo - aqueous angiography demonstrating new aqueous outflow channels. METHOD: In a patient with primary open angle glaucoma, nuclear sclerosis, and medically uncontrolled intraocular pressure, Indocyanine green aqueous angiography (0.5%) was performed to visualize baseline functional aqueous outflow channels. This was followed by 30 degrees bent needle ab-interno goniectomy in the temporal quadrant, where no aqueous outflow channels were initially visualized. Aqueous angiography was repeated using 2% fluorescein to visualize aqueous outflow channels after bent needle ab-interno goniectomy. RESULTS: Prebent needle ab-interno goniectomy, aqueous angiography revealed functional outflow channels in the nasal quadrant although none were visible in the temporal quadrant. Postbent needle ab-interno goniectomy in temporal quadrant aqueous angiography demonstrated 2 new aqueous outflow channels. CONCLUSION: In a patient with open angle glaucoma, following temporal quadrant ab-interno goniectomy, the recruitment of aqueous outflow channels was demonstrated using aqueous angiography.

26. Vector-valued fractal functions: Fractal dimension and Fractional calculus

Abstract

There are many research available on the study of real-valued fractal interpolation function and fractal dimension of its graph. In this paper, our main focus is to study the dimensional results for vector-valued fractal interpolation function and its Riemann-Liouville fractional integral. Here, we give some results which ensure that dimensional results for vector-valued functions are quite different from real-valued functions. We determine interesting bounds for the Hausdorff dimension of the graph of vector-valued fractal interpolation function. We also obtain bounds for the Hausdorff dimension of associated invariant measure supported on the graph of vector-valued fractal interpolation function. Next, We discuss more efficient upper bound for the Hausdorff dimension of measure in terms of probability vector and contraction ratios. Furthermore, we determine some dimensional results for the graph of the Riemann-Liouville fractional integral of a vector-valued fractal interpolation function.

Abstract

There are many research papers dealing with fractal dimension of real-valued fractal functions in the recent literature. The main focus of the present paper is to study fractal dimension of complex-valued functions. This paper also highlights the difference between dimensional results of the complex-valued and real-valued fractal functions. In this paper, we study the fractal dimension of the graph of complex-valued function $g(x)+i h(x)$, compare its fractal dimension with the graphs of functions $g(x)+h(x)$ and $(g(x),h(x))$ and also obtain some bounds. Moreover, we study the fractal dimension of the graph of complex-valued fractal interpolation function associated with a germ function $f$, base function $b$ and scaling functions $\alpha_k$.

Most surgeons have shifted away from sutured to sutureless SFIOL techniques where haptics of a multifocal IOL are inserted in scleral tunnels/flaps. Large-scale publications have shown wide variation in the refractive status of eyes post-SFIOL even in the best of the hands. This is because even slight variations in the site of scleral flap/tunnel formation and tension on haptics due to the variable length of haptics placed in scleral flaps/tunnels can alter the effective lens position and induce significant residual refractive error, especially cylindrical astigmatism due to IOL tilt. Our technique aims to reduce residual refractive error after SFIOL implantation. This is achieved by using intraoperative aberrometry and adjusting haptics accordingly to achieve minimal refractive error intraoperatively. Abstract

Let $\mu$ be a Borel probability measure associated with an iterated function system consisting of a countably infinite number of contracting similarities and an infinite probability vector. In this paper, we study the quantization dimension of the measure $\mu$ with respect to the geometric mean error. The quantization for infinite systems is different from the well-known finite case investigated by Graf and Luschgy. That is, many tools which are used in the finite setting, for example, existence of finite maximal antichains, fail in the infinite case. We prove that the quantization dimension of the measure $\mu$ is equal to its Hausdorff dimension which extends a well-known result of Graf and Luschgy for the finite case to an infinite setting. In the last section, we discuss the stability of quantization dimension for infinite systems.
