Impacts of global ocean changes on species have historically been investigated at the whole-organism level. However, acquiring an in-depth understanding of the organisms’ cellular metabolic responses is paramount to better define their sensitivity to environmental challenges. This is particularly relevant for species that experience highly different environmental conditions across their distribution range as local acclimatization or adaptation can influence their responses to rapid global ocean changes. We aimed at shedding light on the cellular mechanisms underpinning the sensitivity to combined ocean warming (OW) and acidification (OA) in the northern shrimp Pandalus borealis, from four different geographic origins defined by distinctive environmental regimes in the northwest Atlantic: i.e. St. Lawrence Estuary (SLE), Eastern Scotian Shelf (ESS), Esquiman Channel (EC) and Northeast Newfoundland Coast (NNC). We characterized targeted metabolomics profiles of the muscle of shrimp exposed to three temperatures (2, 6 or 10°C) and two pH levels (7.75 or 7.40). Overall, shrimp metabolomics profiles were modulated by a significant interaction between temperature, pH and origin. Temperature drove most of the metabolomics reprogramming, confirming that P. borealis is more sensitive to OW than OA. Inter-origin differences in metabolomics profiles were also observed, with temperature*pH interactions impacting only shrimp from SLE and ESS, pH affecting only shrimp from SLE and temperature impacting shrimp from all origins. Temperature influenced metabolomics pathways related to the tricarboxylic acid cycle (TCA) and amino acid metabolism, resulting mainly in an accumulation of TCA intermediates and tyrosine. Temperature*pH and pH in isolation only affected amino acid metabolism, leading to amino acids accumulation under low pH. However, the ratio of ATP : ADP remained constant across conditions in shrimp from all origins suggesting that their energetic status is not affected

Climate warming threatens marine life by increasing metabolic oxygen demand while decreasing oxygen availability. Tropical species living in warm, low oxygen environments may be most at risk, but their tolerances and exposures to these stressors remain poorly documented. We evaluated habitat restrictions for two brittle star species from Caribbean coral reefs by integrating field observations, laboratory experiments and an ecophysiological model. The absence of one species from the warmest reefs results from vital activity restrictions during episodic low oxygen extremes, even though average conditions are well within physiological tolerance limits. Over the past decade, warmer temperatures have been significantly correlated with a greater frequency and intensity of hypoxic events. Continued warming will progressively exclude hypoxia-tolerant species, even if average oxygen remains constant. Evolution, extinction, and dispersion are fundamental processes affecting marine biodiversity. Until recently, studies of extant marine systems focused mainly on evolution and dispersion, with extinction receiving less attention. Past extinction events have, however, helped shape the evolutionary history of marine ecosystems, with ecological and evolutionary legacies still evident in modern seas. Current anthropogenic global changes increase extinction risk and pose a significant threat to marine ecosystems, which are critical for human use and sustenance. The evaluation of these threats and the likely responses of marine ecosystems requires a better understanding of evolutionary processes that affect marine ecosystems under global change. Here, we discuss how knowledge of (a) changes in biodiversity of ancient marine ecosystems to past extinctions events, (b) the patterns of sensitivity and biodiversity loss in modern marine taxa, and (c) the physiological mechanisms underpinning species’ sensitivity to global change can be exploited and integrated to advance our critical thinking in this area. -- Keywords : global warming ; hypoxia ; ocean acidification ; body size ; rarity ; energetics.

Widespread ocean acidification (OA) is transforming the chemistry of the global ocean and the Arctic is recognised as the region where this transformation will occur at the fastest rate. Moreover, many Arctic species are considered less capable of tolerating OA due to their lower capacity for acid-base regulation. This inability may put severe restraints on many fundamental functions, such as growth and reproductive investments, which ultimately may result in reduced fitness. However, maternal effects may alleviate severe effects on the offspring rendering them more tolerant to OA. In a highly replicated experiment we studied maternal and direct effects of OA predicted for the Arctic shelf seas on egg hatching time and success in the keystone copepod species Calanus glacialis. We incubated females at present day conditions (pHT 8.0) and year 2100 extreme conditions (pHT 7.5) during oogenesis and subsequently reciprocally transplanted laid eggs between these two conditions. Statistical tests showed no effects of maternal or direct exposure to OA at this level. We hypothesise that C. glacialis may be physiologically adapted to egg production at low pH since oogenesis can also take place at conditions of potentially low haemolymph pH of the mother during hibernation in the deep.
