Abstract Two-dimensional (2D) materials are considered for numerous applications in microelectronics, although several challenges remain when integrating them into functional devices. Weak adhesion is one of them, caused by their chemical inertness. Quantifying the adhesion of 2D materials on three-dimensional surfaces is, therefore, an essential step toward reliable 2D device integration. To this end, button shear testing is proposed and demonstrated as a method for evaluating the adhesion of 2D materials with the examples of graphene, hexagonal boron nitride (hBN), molybdenum disulfide, and tungsten diselenide on silicon dioxide and silicon nitride substrates. We propose a fabrication process flow for polymer buttons on the 2D materials and establish suitable button dimensions and testing shear speeds. We show with our quantitative data that low substrate roughness and oxygen plasma treatments on the substrates before 2D material transfer result in higher shear strengths. Thermal annealing increases the adhesion of hBN on silicon dioxide and correlates with the thermal interface resistance between these materials. This establishes button shear testing as a reliable and repeatable method for quantifying the adhesion of 2D materials.

This study investigates the interactions between chemical vapor-deposited graphene and metal-organic chemical vapor-deposited molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) in heterostructures assembled via wet transfer. We use Raman spectroscopy to quantitatively determine close coupling between graphene and MoS2 based on the peak separations in graphene. Although annealing seems to be necessary after transfer to establish a close coupling, its parameters do not have a significant impact on the quality of coupling (for 100 °C

Problematic pornography use is a growing area of interest necessitating a deeper understanding of its contributing factors. Loneliness and emotion regulation difficulties have been advanced as factors that may exacerbate or perpetuate PPU, however, to date, researchers typically consider these factors in isolation. In addition, the evolving landscape of problematic pornography is further shaped by the emergence of pornography content creators. This study explores the relationships between loneliness, emotion regulation difficulties and problematic pornography use and individuals’ interactions with pornography content creators. Specifically, we examine whether emotion regulation difficulties mediate the relationship between loneliness and PPU and whether this mediation is contingent on interactions with content creators. A total of 213 adults (Mage = 35.57 years, SD = 16.90; 77.50 % men) participants completed an online questionnaire assessing PPU, emotion regulation difficulties and loneliness. Results revealed loneliness is associated with increased PPU and emotion regulation difficulties. Emotion regulation difficulties, in turn, relate to PPU. Though interaction with pornographic content creators was associated with reduced PPU, interacting with content creators did not moderate the effect of emotion regulation on the relationship between loneliness and PPU. Our findings support the hypothesised model, suggesting that emotion regulation difficulties mediate the relationship between loneliness and PPU. The identified mediating role of emotion regulation difficulties provides a foundation for further investigations into the underlying mechanisms connecting emotional well-being and problematic pornography use, offering potential directions for future research.

Metal–organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) is a key method for scalable synthesis of two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenide (2D-TMDC) layers. However, it faces several challenges, such as the unintentional co-deposition of carbon impurities resulting from the pyrolysis of metal–organic precursors. This study investigates the chemical features of carbon and its impact on the photoluminescence property and air stability of 2D-MoS2. Using X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS), it was found that the carbon impurities show characteristics similar to those of sp2-bonded graphitic carbon. Upon prolonged (20–40 weeks) exposure to the atmosphere, the incorporated carbon appears to react with 2D-MoS2, forming a MoS2−xCx solid solution. At the same time, a gradual decrease in the S/Mo ratio implies the formation of sulfur vacancies was also observed. These two processes lead to crystal degradation over time, as evidenced by the gradual quenching of the Raman and photoluminescence (PL) peaks. More detailed PL analyses suggest a charge transfer mechanism between sp2-carbon/2D-MoS2 and 2D-MoS2/air-adsorbates, which, in the short term, could alter PL emissions and appear to further intensify the degradation of 2D-MoS2 in the long-term. The findings highlight the strong impact of unintentionally co-deposited carbon on the optical properties and air stability of MOCVD 2D-MoS2 layers.

Language assistants have become an important resource for teachers in bilingual schools in Spain, especially in the Madrid region. Most language assistants come from English-speaking countries, especially from the United States. In their role as language assistants, they are expected to bring and share their knowledge about the cultural aspects and content subjects and, at the same time, they need to share their beliefs and perspectives towards Spain and Spanish schools. Nevertheless, sometimes there is controversy around this topic, as there are obvious differences and similarities between both cultures; one of them being the misconception regarding the type of culture they need to teach students. Abstract Background Opioid abuse is widespread in North America and the over‐prescription of opioids are a contributing factor. The goal of this prospective study was to quantify over‐prescription rates, evaluate postoperative experiences of pain, and understand the impact of peri‐operative factors such as adequate pain counseling and use of non‐opioid analgesia. Methods Consecutive recruitment of patients undergoing head and neck endocrine surgery was undertaken from January 1st 2020 to December 31st 2021 at four Canadian hospitals in Ontario and Nova Scotia. Postoperative tracking of pain levels and analgesic requirements were employed. Chart review and preoperative and postoperative surveys provided information on counseling, use of local anesthesia, and disposal plans. Results A total of 125 adult patients were included in the final analysis. Total thyroidectomy was the most common procedure (40.8%). Median use of opioid tablets was 2 (IQR 0–4), with 79.5% of prescribed tablets unused. Patients who reported inadequate counseling (n = 35, 28.0%) were more likely to use opioids (57.2% vs. 37.8%, p

Abstract Background Chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) is a complex inflammatory disease of the sinonasal tract. To understand this disease entity and develop targeted treatments, a reproducible animal model is paramount. Aims/objectives To optimize a murine model of eosinophilic CRS by establishing benchmark histological markers and validate its fidelity in evaluating intranasal treatments. Material and methods Forty-five Balb/c mice were included in the 7-week protocol. Experimental animals (n = 20) were induced a CRS disease state upon receiving intraperitoneal sensitization with ovalbumin (OVA), followed by intranasal OVA with Aspergillus oryzae protease. Analysis of complete blood count with differential, peripheral blood smear, and histological markers from the nasal cavity mucosa were performed. CRS mice were additionally treated with intranasal saline (n = 5) or mometasone (n = 10) and compared with control groups of untreated CRS (n = 5) and healthy (n = 5) mice after week 7. Results Histological analysis of experimental animal nasal mucosa revealed significantly higher levels of eosinophilic tissue infiltration/degranulation, hyaline droplets, Charcot–Leyden crystals, and respiratory epithelial thickness compared to healthy controls. Treatment with mometasone significantly reversed the histopathological changes observed in CRS mice. Conclusion and significance This murine model induced substantial local eosinophilic inflammation within sinonasal mucosa, that was reversible with mometasone. This model may be used to evaluate the efficacy of therapeutics designed to target CRS.

Abstract Background Polymorphous adenocarcinoma is the third most common malignant salivary gland tumor. Within polymorphous adenocarcinoma, cribriform adenocarcinoma of salivary glands is a rare subtype and resembles papillary thyroid carcinoma histopathologically. Diagnostically, cribriform adenocarcinoma of salivary glands is challenging for pathologists and surgeons alike as initial presentation and cytologic nuclear features can be easily confused with papillary thyroid carcinoma arising from a thyroglossal duct remnant or lingual thyroid. Case presentation A healthy 64-year-old Caucasian woman presented to a community otolaryngologist with a 4-year history of progressive postnasal drip, globus sensation, and eventual dysphonia. Flexible fiberoptic laryngoscopy showed a large, smooth, vallecular lesion filling the oropharynx. Computed tomography imaging of the neck showed a rounded heterogeneous mass centered within the right aspect of the oropharynx measuring 4.2 × 4.4 × 4.5 cm. Fine needle aspiration biopsy was suspicious for papillary carcinoma due to microscopic findings of malignant cells, nuclear grooves, and a powdery chromatin pattern. In the operating room, the tumor was resected en bloc using a lateral pharyngotomy approach with partial resection of the right lateral hyoid. A limited cervical lymphadenectomy was performed to facilitate the lateral pharyngotomy approach and two out of three lymph nodes demonstrated regional metastatic disease. Nuclear grooves, nuclear membrane notching, and occasional intranuclear pseudoinclusions were identified, which are overlapping histopathological characteristics of papillary thyroid carcinoma and cribriform adenocarcinoma of salivary glands. It was negative for thyroglobulin and thyroid transcription factor-1, which was in keeping with cribriform adenocarcinoma of salivary glands rather than papillary thyroid carcinoma. Conclusion It is difficult to distinguish cribriform adenocarcinoma of salivary glands from papillary thyroid carcinoma solely by cytology, and the distinct characteristics of regional lymph node metastasis coupled with nuanced histologic differences should be emphasized in the evaluation of patients presenting with neck lymphadenopathy and an unknown primary or tongue mass. If sufficient fine needle aspiration biopsy material is available, thyroid transcription factor-1, thyroglobulin, or molecular testing may prove useful in differentiating cribriform adenocarcinoma of salivary glands from papillary thyroid carcinoma. A misdiagnosis of papillary thyroid carcinoma may lead to inappropriate treatment including unnecessary thyroidectomy. Therefore, it is critical for both pathologists and surgeons to be aware of this uncommon entity to avoid misdiagnosis and subsequent mismanagement.

We report on p-channel metal-insulator-semiconductor heterostructure field-effect transistors (MISHFET) based on p-GaN/uid-GaN/Al textsubscript 0.29Ga textsubscript 0.71N single heterostructures on sapphire substrates, grown by metalorganic vapor phase epitaxy (MOVPE). The impact of p-GaN layer removal and channel layer thickness adjustment by dry-etching on the characteristics of the MISHFET are investigated. Depending on the remaining GaN thickness $(t_{\mathrm{ GaN}})$ , the fabricated MISHFET show either depletion-mode (d-mode) operation with a threshold voltage $V_{\mathrm{ th}}$ of 3.8 V and an on-current $\unicode{0x007C}I_{\mathrm{ D,on}} \unicode{0x007C}$ of 9.5 mA/mm ( $t_{\mathrm{ GaN}} = 21$ nm) or enhancement-mode (e-mode) operation with $V_{\mathrm{ th}}$ of −2.3 V and $\unicode{0x007C}I_{\mathrm{ D,on}} \unicode{0x007C}$ of 1.5 mA/mm ( $t_{\mathrm{ GaN}}= 12$ nm). Independent of the etching depth, all devices exhibit a very low off-state drain current $\left|I_{\mathrm{D}, \mathrm{off}}\right| \sim 10^{-8}$ mA/mm and a steep subthreshold swing (SS) between 80 and 89 mV/dec. Similar to n-channel devices, a $V_{th}$ instability caused by charge trapping at the dielectric/semiconductor interface is found, emphasizing that careful interface engineering is required for good device performance.

Creative industries, by their nature of innovation through creativity, add value to any territory by giving it spatial functionality, and at the same time, they favour sustainable development through the sustainability of the urban centres in which they operate. This paper develops a GIS methodology based on the implementation of a spatial analysis model that captures, in a comparative way, the spatial functionality of two different urban centres—(Cluj-Napoca (Romania) and Pécs (Hungary))—in terms of spatial extent based on the impact of the spatial distribution of creative industries. The spatial analysis model is based on the management of alpha-numeric databases representing the addresses of the creative industries, based on geolocation, for the development of spatial analyses of pedestrian accessibility. The main aim is to identify the specific areas of 15 and 5 min model cities. The comparative analysis was carried out by implementing a deterministic methodology through which the areas with certain degrees of accessibility were analysed in relation to the total analysed area, with the main aim of standardising the scale of analysis due to the difference between the two urban centres, thus facilitating the use of qualitative boning in the final comparison process. The results obtained highlight the local behaviour, at the same time making it possible to conduct a realistic deterministic comparative analysis of the two urban centres, which are also identifiable from the point of view of local territorial functionality, thereby validating the GIS model implemented in the present study.

Trimetazidine (TMZ), used for treating stable angina pectoris, has garnered attention in the realm of sports due to its potential performance-enhancing properties, and the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) has classified TMZ on the S4 list of prohibited substances since 2014. The purpose of this narrative mini-review is to emphasize the biochemical aspects underlying the abusive use of TMZ among athletes as a metabolic modulator of cardiac energy metabolism. The myocardium’s ability to adapt its energy substrate utilization between glucose and fatty acids is crucial for maintaining cardiac function under various conditions, such as rest, moderate exercise, and intense effort. TMZ acts as a partial inhibitor of fatty acid oxidation by inhibiting 3-ketoacyl-CoA thiolase (KAT), shifting energy production from long-chain fatty acids to glucose, reducing oxygen consumption, improving cardiac function, and enhancing exercise capacity. Furthermore, TMZ modulates pyruvate dehydrogenase (PDH) activity, promoting glucose oxidation while lowering lactate production, and ultimately stabilizing myocardial function. TMZs role in reducing oxidative stress is notable, as it activates antioxidant enzymes like glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) and superoxide dismutase (SOD). In conclusion, TMZs biochemical mechanisms make it an attractive but controversial option for athletes seeking a competitive edge.

Sleep disorders can be the result of psychiatric or neurological conditions, such as post-traumatic stress disorders, depression, anxiety, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease. At the same time, changes in sleep, known as sleep disorders, are closely related to various metabolic dysfunctions, which in turn are the result of the generation of reactive oxygen species, or otherwise known as oxidative stress. For this reason, cannabinoid derivatives are increasingly used for this purpose. Among the most used are delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD). These agents interact with the endogenous endocannabinoid system, either by direct action on specific receptors, or by increasing the availability of endocannabinoids, modifying particular mental states (anxiety, depression). The results of the studies specified in this article provide promising evidence regarding the positive effects of CBD, which extend beyond the scope of sleep disorders, with possible applications also in the case of the accumulation of reactive oxygen species.

Abstract Metal-free chemical vapor deposition (CVD) of single-layer graphene (SLG) on c-plane sapphire has recently been demonstrated for wafer diameters of up to 300 mm, and the high quality of the SLG layers is generally characterized by integral methods. By applying a comprehensive analysis approach, distinct interactions at the graphene-sapphire interface and local variations caused by the substrate topography are revealed. Regions near the sapphire step edges show tiny wrinkles with a height of about 0.2 nm, framed by delaminated graphene as identified by the typical Dirac cone of free graphene. In contrast, adsorption of CVD SLG on the hydroxyl-terminated α-Al2O3 (0001) terraces results in a superstructure with a periodicity of (2.66 ± 0.03) nm. Weak hydrogen bonds formed between the hydroxylated sapphire surface and the π-electron system of SLG result in a clean interface. The charge injection induces a band gap in the adsorbed graphene layer of about (73 ± 3) meV at the Dirac point. The good agreement with the predictions of a theoretical analysis underlines the potential of this hybrid system for emerging electronic applications.

Abstract Importance Ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration biopsies (UGFNA) play a crucial role in the diagnosis of thyroid nodules. There are two techniques for performing an UGFNA: short-axis technique and long-axis technique. There is sparsity in the literature regarding the differences between these two techniques. Objective To compare the efficiency between long-axis and short-axis thyroid UGFNA techniques in trainees. Our secondary outcomes were to define the comfort level and learning curves of trainees. Design A longitudinal prospective cohort study, completed from December 2018 to November 2019, using the Blue Phantom Thyroid Model© for UGFNA. Face and construct validity of the model were verified. Residents completed UGFNA on an assigned nodule using both long-axis and short-axis techniques, the order of which was sequentially allocated. The rate and time to successful biopsy were obtained for both techniques. Biopsy attempts were repeated to establish learning curves. Setting Single-center study. Participants Fourteen Otolaryngology—Head & Neck Surgery residents at the University of Toronto. Main outcome measure Biopsy success and efficiency for novice learners completing UGFNA on a simulated thyroid model using long-axis and short-axis techniques. Results A trend towards higher odds of successful biopsy using the long-axis technique with no difference in procedure duration was observed (OR = 2.2, p = 0.095, CI = 0.87–5.39). Learning curve graphs appeared heterogenous according to trainee level. Trainees found the long-axis technique easier to perform (10/14, 71%), and the simulator valuable for learning (12/14, 86%). Conclusion Thyroid UGFNA using the long-axis technique may have an increased success rate and is generally favored by trainees for being easier to perform. Thyroid simulators have the potential to increase learner comfort and efficiency with UGFNA. Graphical Abstract

Abstract Background Intra-operative internal carotid artery (ICA) injury during transnasal endoscopic surgery is a potentially catastrophic event. Such an injury is life-threatening in the immediate setting, with a reported peri-operative mortality rate of 10%. Nasal packing, muscle patches, direct vessel closure, and endovascular techniques have been described as useful strategies for managing ICA bleeds. The objective of this study was to develop a formalized management protocol for intra-operative ICA injury through engagement with a multi-disciplinary panel. Methods A modified Delphi method including literature review, iterative rounds of stakeholder feedback, and expert panel discussions was used to develop a management protocol for ICA injury during transnasal endoscopic surgery. The 10-person multi-disciplinary panel included otolaryngologists, neurosurgeons, interventional neuroradiologists, anesthesiologists, and operating room nursing staff. Results After three rounds of stakeholder engagement with the expert panel, consensus was reached on important elements to include within the protocol. The protocol was divided in three categories: Alert, Control, and Transfer. ‘Alert’ focusses on early communication with anesthesia and nursing staff. ‘Control’ focusses on techniques to expose the injury and obtain hemostasis or adequate tamponade. Lastly, ‘Transfer’ describes the process of contacting neuro-interventional radiology and safely transferring the patient. A one-page handout of the protocol was developed for placement in operating theatres. Conclusion Due to the life-threatening nature of ICA injury, it is imperative that endoscopic sinus and skull base surgeons are prepared to manage this complication. Using a modified Delphi method with a multidisciplinary expert panel, a protocol for management of intra-operative ICA injury was developed. Graphical Abstract

Diabetes is a serious pathology that affects a significant number of people worldwide. Its progression is rapid and leads to serious complications if glycemic control is missing. The micro and macrovascular complications of diabetes produce disabilities over time that affect the daily lives of patients. The major challenge of diabetes therapy is to reach a stable glycemic state and to delay the onset of specific complications. Aromatherapy is considered an alternative or complementary therapy, but in recent years, there has been a tendency to overuse essential oils. The present study was designed to evaluate and compare the effects produced by the topical and oral administration of fennel essential oil to diabetic rats. Eighteen compounds in fennel essential oil were identified by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis. The major compounds were trans-anethole (64.6%) and fenchone (24.5%). The in vivo study revealed that after a four-week treatment with fennel essential oil, the rats’ glycemic levels were significantly reduced (p ≤ 0.05). Furthermore, there were no differences between the two routes of administration. In addition, an ex vivo study underlined the potential effect of this essential oil in the prevention of cataract formation.

Monosodium glutamate (MSG) is the sodium salt of glutamic acid (GLA), used as a flavour enhancer. MSG is considered a controversial substance. It is incriminated in disturbing the antioxidant system, but also has beneficial effects, as GLA metabolism plays a crucial role in homeostasis. This study highlights which positive or negative aspects of MSG sub-chronic consumption are better reflected in subjects potentially affected by advanced age. Daily doses of MSG were administered to four groups of two-year-old Wistar rats for 90 days: (I) 185 mg/kg bw, (II) 1500 mg/kg bw, (III) 3000 mg/kg bw and (IV) 6000 mg/kg bw, compared to a MSG non-consumer group. Aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase, alkaline phosphatase, direct and total bilirubin, total cholesterol, triglycerides, creatinine and urea levels were analysed; stomach, liver and kidney samples were subjected to histopathological analysis. Although, in most cases, there were no statistical differences, interesting aspects of the dose–effect relationship were observed. After MSG sub-chronic consumption, the positive aspects of GLA seem to be reflected better than the negative ones. The hormesis effect, with low-level reactive oxygen species’ protective effects and GLA metabolism, may represent the hypothesis of a potential defence mechanism triggered by MSG sub-chronic consumption in ageing rats.
