Abstract

The ENUBET ERC project (2016-2021) is studying a facility based on a narrow band beam capable of constraining the neutrino fluxes normalization through the monitoring of the associated charged leptons in an instrumented decay tunnel. A key element of the project is the design and optimization of the hadronic beamline. In this proceeding we present progress on the studies of the proton extraction schemes. Abstract

The uncertainty in the initial neutrino flux is the main limitation for a precise determination of the absolute neutrino cross section. The ERC funded ENUBET project (2016-2021) is studying a facility based on a narrow band beam to produce an intense source of electron neutrinos with a ten-fold improvement in accuracy. Since March 2019 ENUBET is also a Neutrino Platform experiment at CERN: NP06/ENUBET. A key element of the project is the instrumentation of the decay tunnel to monitor large angle positrons produced together with $\nu_e$ in the three body decays of kaons ($K_{e3}$) and to discriminate them from neutral and charged pions. The need for an efficient and high purity e/$\pi$ separation over a length of several meters, and the requirements for fast response and radiation hardness imposed by the harsh beam environment, suggested the implementation of a longitudinally segmented Fe/scintillator calorimeter with a readout based on WLS fibers and SiPM detectors. An extensive experimental program through several test beam campaigns at the CERN-PS T9 beam line has been pursued on calorimeter prototypes, both with a shashlik and a lateral readout configuration. The latter, in which fibers collect the light from the side of the scintillator tiles, allows to place the light sensors away from the core of the calorimeter, thus reducing possible irradiation damages with respect to the shashlik design. This contribution will present the achievements of the prototyping activities carried out, together with irradiation tests made on the Silicon Photo-Multipliers. Abstract

We present the first application of polysiloxane-based scintillators as active medium in a shashlik sampling calorimeter. These results were obtained from a testbeam campaign of a $\sim$6$\times$6$\times$45 cm$^3$ (13 $X_0$ depth) prototype. A Wavelength Shifting fiber array of 36 elements runs perpendicularly to the stack of iron (15 mm) and polysiloxane scintillator (15 mm) tiles with a density of about one over cm$^2$. Unlike shashlik calorimeters based on plastic organic scintillators, here fibers are optically matched with the scintillator without any intermediate air gap. The prototype features a compact light readout based on Silicon Photo-Multipliers embedded in the bulk of the detector. The detector was tested with electrons, pions and muons with energies ranging from 1 to 7 GeV at the CERN-PS. This solution offers a highly radiation hard detector to instrument the decay region of a neutrino beam, providing an event-by-event measurement of high-angle decay products associated with neutrino production (ENUBET, Enhanced NeUtrino BEams from kaon Tagging, ERC project). The results in terms of light yield, uniformity and energy resolution, are compared to a similar calorimeter built with ordinary plastic scintillators., Comment: 28 pages, 16 figures. Abstract

The narrow band beam of ENUBET is the first implementation of the "monitored neutrino beam" technique proposed in 2015. ENUBET has been designed to monitor lepton production in the decay tunnel of neutrino beams and to provide a 1% measurement of the neutrino flux at source. In particular, the three body semi-leptonic decay of kaons monitored by large angle positron production offers a fully controlled $\nu_{e}$ source at the GeV scale for a new generation of short baseline experiments. Abstract

The ENUBET ERC project (2016-2021) is studying a narrow band neutrino beam where lepton production can be monitored at single particle level in an instrumented decay tunnel. This would allow to measure $\nu_{\mu}$ and $\nu_{e}$ cross sections with a precision improved by about one order of magnitude compared to present results. In this proceeding we describe a first realistic design of the hadron beamline based on a dipole coupled to a pair of quadrupole triplets along with the optimisation guidelines and the results of a simulation based on G4beamline. A static focusing design, though less efficient than a horn-based solution, results several times more efficient than originally expected. It works with slow proton extractions reducing drastically pile-up effects in the decay tunnel and it paves the way towards a time-tagged neutrino beam. On the other hand a horn-based transferline would ensure higher yields at the tunnel entrance. The first studies conducted at CERN to implement the synchronization between a few ms proton extraction and a horn pulse of 2-10 ms are also described., Comment: Poster presented at NuPhys2018 (London 19-21 December 2018). 4 pages, 3 figures

Abstract

The current generation of short baseline neutrino experiments is approaching intrinsic source limitations in the knowledge of flux, initial neutrino energy and flavor. A dedicated facility based on conventional accelerator techniques and existing infrastructures designed to overcome these impediments would have a remarkable impact on the entire field of neutrino oscillation physics. It would improve by about one order of magnitude the precision on $\nu_\mu$ and $\nu_e$ cross sections, enable the study of electroweak nuclear physics at the GeV scale with unprecedented resolution and advance searches for physics beyond the three-neutrino paradigm. In turn, these results would enhance the physics reach of the next generation long baseline experiments (DUNE and Hyper-Kamiokande) on CP violation and their sensitivity to new physics. In this document, we present the physics case and technology challenge of high precision neutrino beams based on the results achieved by the ENUBET Collaboration in 2016-2018. We also set the R&D milestones to enable the construction and running of this new generation of experiments well before the start of the DUNE and Hyper-Kamiokande data taking. We discuss the implementation of this new facility at three different level of complexity: $\nu_\mu$ narrow band beams, $\nu_e$ monitored beams and tagged neutrino beams. We also consider a site specific implementation based on the CERN-SPS proton driver providing a fully controlled neutrino source to the ProtoDUNE detectors at CERN., Comment: 13 pages, 3 figures, submitted as an input document for the European Particle Physics Strategy. Abstract

The production of flexible and robust thermal neutron detectors with improved properties as compared to the commercial ZnS:Ag based phosphors is here pursued, exploiting a siloxane binder, whose intrinsic properties as related to the chemical features of the functional groups and to the optical properties are investigated and tailored in correlation with the final performances of the detectors. Two different siloxanes either with pendant phenyl groups or with aliphatic groups have been used, the former being intrinsically fluorescent and with higher polarizability than the latter. Moreover, 6LiF crystals have been synthesized by co-precipitation method and the solvent/co-solvent ratio has been changed in order to tune the crystal size. Then, the size effect on the detector efficiency to thermal neutrons has been investigated as related to the energy loss of thermal neutron reaction products inside the crystal and the dispersion homogeneity of the crystals into the composite. To complete the characterization of the produced flexible detectors, the response to {\gamma}-rays has been measured and compared to a commercial detector. The careful choice of both the base resin and the 6LiF crystals size allows to produce flexible detector for thermal neutrons with performances comparable to the commercial standard and with higher mechanical robustness and stability., Comment: submitted to European Physical Journal A, EPJA-104631, currently under review

Abstract

The ENUBET facility is a proposed narrow band neutrino beam where lepton production is monitored at single particle level in the instrumented decay tunnel. This facility addresses simultaneously the two most important challenges for the next generation of cross section experiments: a superior control of the flux and flavor composition at source and a high level of tunability and precision in the selection of the energy of the outcoming neutrinos. We report here the latest results in the development and test of the instrumentation for the decay tunnel. Abstract

International audience; ENUBET has been designed to monitor lepton production in the decay tunnel of neutrino beams at single particle level and to provide a 1% measurement of the neutrino flux at source. In particular, the three body semileptonic decay of kaons monitored by large angle positron production offers a fully controlled $\nu_e$ source at the GeV scale for a new generation of short baseline experiments. The ENUBET Collaboration presented at ICHEP the first end-to-end simulation of the beamline and a review of the performance of this non-conventional technique. Special emphasis has been given to the new static focusing system that was validated in 2018. We also discussed the performance of the positron tagger tested at CERN in 2017-2018 and the expected sensitivity of ENUBET for $\nu_e$ and $\nu_\mu$ events.

Abstract

International audience; The knowledge of initial flux, energy and flavour of current neutrino beams is currently the main limitation for a precise measurement of neutrino crosssections. The ENUBET ERC project (2016–2021) is studying a facility based on a narrow-band neutrino beam capable of constraining the neutrino flux normalization through the monitoring of the associated charged leptons in an instrumented decay tunnel. In particular, the identification of large-angle positrons from Ke3 decays at single-particle level can reduce the νe flux uncertainty at the level of 1%. This setup would allow for an unprecedented measurement of the νe cross-section at the GeV scale. Such an experimental input would be highly beneficial to reduce the budget of systematic uncertainties in the next long baseline oscillation projects (i.e., HyperK-DUNE). Furthermore, in narrow-band beams, the transverse position of the neutrino interaction at the detector can be exploited to determine a priori with significant precision the neutrino energy spectrum without relying on the finalstate reconstruction.

Abstract

The knowledge of the initial flux in conventional neutrino beams represents the main limitation for a precision (1\%) measurement of $\nu_e$ and $\nu_\mu$ cross sections. Since 2016, ENUBET has achieved remarkable results in the design of a neutrino beam with superior control of the fluxes and has extended its physics case to cover all the needs of new generation cross section experiments. In this Proposal, we summarize the achievement of ENUBET in the design and simulation of the proton extraction scheme, focusing system, transfer line and instrumentation of the decay tunnel. We present the results on positron reconstruction from the $K_{e3}$ decays and the impact on the determination of the flux, outlining the activities that will be carried on during LS2 and the final validation of the ENUBET demonstrator in 2021. Special emphasis will be given on the activities that will be performed in collaboration with the CERN groups and the use of CERN facilities and infrastructures. In the Proposal, we also discuss the potential of monitored neutrino beams beyond the original aim of ENUBET: the flux measurement at the 1\% level for all $\nu_\mu$ produced in the beam and the determination of the neutrino energy without relying on final state particle reconstruction. In addition, the ENUBET static focusing system paves the way to the construction of a tagged neutrino beam, i.e. a facility where the observation of the lepton in the decay tunnel is associated with the neutrino scattering in the neutrino detector on an event-by-event basis. Perspectives and opportunities offered by tagged neutrino beams are discussed, too.

Neutrino physics will require measurements of absolute neutrino cross sections at the GeV scale with exquisite (1%) precision in the near future. This goal might be achieved by producing a sign and momentum selected narrow band beam and monitoring the production of $e^{+}$ in the decay tunnel from the decays of charged Kaons ($K_{e3}$ channel). This technique, which requires a special instrumented beam-line, would allow a 1% level measurement of the cross-sections of the neutrino species ($\nu_e$ and $\bar{\nu}_e$) which are the final states involved in the searches for CP violation with muon neutrino beams at long-baseline. The ENUBET Horizon-2020 ERC Consolidator Grant, approved by the European Research Council in 2015, is the framework within which such a non conventional beam-line will be developed. We present a progress report of the project (2016-2021) after about one year of work, the experimental results on ultra-compact calorimeters suited for the instrumenting the decay tunnel and the R&D in the design of the hadronic beamline.

Abstract

In this work, first results on newly developed thermal neutrons scintillators are reported. The main focus is the synthesis and characterization of 6LiF nanoparticles, to be added to the polysiloxane matrix as neutron absorber. The preparation of 6LiF nanocrystals has been pursued by co-precipitation technique, using a mixture of water and ethanol in different ratios. The as-prepared nanocrystals have been characterized in terms of crystal structure and crystallite size by X-ray diffraction, whereas the composition has been investigated by energy dispersive spectroscopy. In this preliminary step towards the realization of a new detector, the commercial inorganic phosphor ZnS:Ag (EJ-600) has been used as scintillating medium. A fixed weight ratio of 6LiF nanocrystals and EJ-600 phosphor has been chosen, namely 3:1 EJ-600:6LiF, whereas different amounts of the mixture have been added to the polysiloxane binder, prior to cross-linking. The composites have been benchmarked as for light output and thermal neutrons detection efficiency against a commercial sample of EJ-426 taken as a reference. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

International audience; The ENUBET project is studying a narrow band neutrino beam where lepton production can be monitored at single particle level in an instrumented decay tunnel and that could provide a 1% measurement of the neutrino flux at source. The three body semi-leptonic decay of kaons monitored by large angle positron production offers a fully controlled $\nu_{e}$ source at the GeV scale for a new generation of short baseline experiments. The ENUBET Collaboration presented at NuFact2018 the first end-to-end simulation of the beamline, the physics performance and the results of the test beam performed on the positron tagger. We reported ENUBET expected fluxes for $\nu_{e}$ and $\nu_{\mu}$

Abstract

The ENUBET facility is a proposed narrow band neutrino beam where lepton production is monitored at single particle level in the instrumented decay tunnel. This facility addresses simultaneously the two most important challenges for the next generation of cross section experiments: a superior control of the flux and flavor composition at source and a high level of tunability and precision in the selection of the energy of the outcoming neutrinos. We report here the latest results in the development and test of the instrumentation for the decay tunnel. Abstract

The ENUBET ERC project (2016–2021) is studying a narrow band neutrino beam where lepton production can be monitored at single particle level. For this purpose, the decay tunnel is instrumented with longitudinally segmented calorimeters. Three different specialized calorimeters have been designed and tested, two of which based on the shashlik calorimetric concept with a compact readout while the third is a less compact version with a lateral readout. All of the prototypes are composed of thick steel absorbers coupled to plastic scintillators. Regarding the shashlik modules, a matrix of 3 × 3 fibers runs transversely with a density of one fiber/cm2. The fibers are coupled individually to silicon photomultipliers mounted on a custom PCB allowing to reduce the dead zones between adjacent modules to an extremely small level compared to the “fiber bundling” configurations. This setup allows a very effective longitudinal segmentation and hence e / π separation. The second shashlik module is based on polysiloxane scintillators which come in liquid form, are poured around the fiber arrays and finally made solid with a thermal treatment. Finally, the lateral readout module, light is collected from both sides of each scintillator tile and the 10 fibers from the same UCM are bundled to a single SiPM. Here are discussed the results of test beams performed in 2016–2018 at the CERN-PS East Area and the characterization of SiPMs of different cell size ( 12 μ m and 15 μ m ) before and after being exposed to neutron fluxes up to 1012/cm2 at the INFN-LNL CN accelerator facility.

Abstract

The goal of the ENUBET project is to demonstrate that a precision of ∼ 1 % on measurement of the absolute neutrino cross section at GeV scale can be achieved by monitoring the positron production in the decay tunnel coming from the three-body semileptonic decays of kaons. The baseline option for the tunnel instrumentation employs a fine-grained shashlik calorimeter with a 4.3 X0 longitudinal segmentation to separate positrons and pions coming from other decay modes of kaons. The system is complemented by rings of plastic scintillator doublets below the calorimeter acting as a photon veto to suppress the π 0 background and to provide timing informations. SiPMs instrumenting the detector will be exposed to sizeble amounts of neutrons arising in hadronic showers. In order to reproduce such a working environment, SiPMs with different cell size (from 12 to 20 μ m ) were irradiated at the INFN-LNL CN Van Der Graaf with neutron fluences up to 2 × 10 11 n/cm2 (1 MeV-eq.). The exposed light sensors were characterized in terms of I–V curves at different irradiation levels, and their response tested by exposing a prototype on beam at CERN. In this contribution we will report the results of the described tests on SiPMs, together with the advances in their integration with the ENUBET detectors.

Abstract

The knowledge of the initial flux, energy and flavor of current neutrino beams is the main limitation for a precise measurement of neutrino cross-sections. The ENUBET ERC project is studying a facility based on a narrow-band neutrino beam capable of constraining the neutrino fluxes normalization through the monitoring of the associated charged leptons in an instrumented decay tunnel. In ENUBET, the identification of large-angle positrons from [Formula: see text] decays at single particle level can potentially reduce the [Formula: see text] flux uncertainty at the level of 1%. This setup would allow for an unprecedented measurement of the [Formula: see text] cross-section at the GeV scale. This input would be highly beneficial to reduce the budget of systematic uncertainties in the next long baseline oscillation projects. Furthermore, in narrow-band beams, the transverse position of the neutrino interaction at the detector can be exploited to determine a priori with significant precision the neutrino energy spectrum without relying on the final state reconstruction. This contribution will present the advances in the design and simulation of the hadronic beam line. Special emphasis will be given to a static focusing system of secondary mesons that can be coupled to a slow extraction proton scheme. The consequent reduction of particle rates and pile-up effects makes the determination of the [Formula: see text] flux through a direct monitoring of muons after the hadron dump viable, and paves the way to a time-tagged neutrino beam. Time-coincidences among the lepton at the source and the neutrino at the detector would enable an unprecedented purity and the possibility to reconstruct the neutrino kinematics at source on an event-by-event basis. We will also present the performance of positron tagger prototypes tested at CERN beamlines, a full simulation of the positron reconstruction chain and the expected physics reach of ENUBET.

Abstract

We present the first application of polysiloxane-based scintillators as active medium in a shashlik sampling calorimeter. These results were obtained from a testbeam campaign of a $\sim$6$\times$6$\times$45 cm$^3$ (13 $X_0$ depth) prototype. A Wavelength Shifting fiber array of 36 elements runs perpendicularly to the stack of iron (15 mm) and polysiloxane scintillator (15 mm) tiles with a density of about one over cm$^2$. Unlike shashlik calorimeters based on plastic organic scintillators, here fibers are optically matched with the scintillator without any intermediate air gap. The prototype features a compact light readout based on Silicon Photo-Multipliers embedded in the bulk of the detector. The detector was tested with electrons, pions and muons with energies ranging from 1 to 7 GeV at the CERN-PS. This solution offers a highly radiation hard detector to instrument the decay region of a neutrino beam, providing an event-by-event measurement of high-angle decay products associated with neutrino production (ENUBET, Enhanced NeUtrino BEams from kaon Tagging, ERC project). The results in terms of light yield, uniformity and energy resolution, are compared to a similar calorimeter built with ordinary plastic scintillators., Comment: 28 pages, 16 figures. Abstract

The uncertainty in the initial neutrino flux is the main limitation for a precise determination of the absolute neutrino cross section. The ERC funded ENUBET project (2016-2021) is studying a facility based on a narrow band beam to produce an intense source of electron neutrinos with a ten-fold improvement in accuracy. Since March 2019 ENUBET is also a Neutrino Platform experiment at CERN: NP06/ENUBET. A key element of the project is the instrumentation of the decay tunnel to monitor large angle positrons produced together with $\nu_e$ in the three body decays of kaons ($K_{e3}$) and to discriminate them from neutral and charged pions. The need for an efficient and high purity e/$\pi$ separation over a length of several meters, and the requirements for fast response and radiation hardness imposed by the harsh beam environment, suggested the implementation of a longitudinally segmented Fe/scintillator calorimeter with a readout based on WLS fibers and SiPM detectors. An extensive experimental program through several test beam campaigns at the CERN-PS T9 beam line has been pursued on calorimeter prototypes, both with a shashlik and a lateral readout configuration. The latter, in which fibers collect the light from the side of the scintillator tiles, allows to place the light sensors away from the core of the calorimeter, thus reducing possible irradiation damages with respect to the shashlik design. This contribution will present the achievements of the prototyping activities carried out, together with irradiation tests made on the Silicon Photo-Multipliers. Abstract

International audience; Shashlik calorimeters equipped with a compact readout based on Silicon PhotoMultipliers can be longitudinally segmented by directly coupling the WLS fibers with the photosensors thus embedding the readout in the bulk of the calorimeter. Results on energy resolution and particle identification for such calorimeters are presented. The SiPMs for the readout have also been characterized after being exposed to neutron fluences up to 2×10$^{11}$ n/cm$^2$ (1 MeV eq.). Alternative options for the active material were also investigated; we studied in particular polysiloxane as a substitute for plastic scintillator.

Abstract

Gli ex voto dipinti sono un oggetto di culto dalla lunga storia. Esempi di questo tipo di ex-voto, largamente utilizzati fino alla fine dell'Ottocento nell'Italia meridionale e in altre regioni dell'Europa meridionale, sono infatti già attestati nel mondo classico (pinakes, tabellea pictae). Nel passaggio tra il mondo "pagano" e il mondo "cristiano", nel mutare dei referenti divini e delle teologie, si osserva una continuità dei simboli rituali e delle pratiche votive e, più in generale, una significativa persistenza di forme, funzioni e significati in campo religioso. The painted ex-votos are a cult object with a long history. Examples of this type of ex-voto, widely used up to the end of the 19th century in Southern Italy and in other regions of Southern Europe, are in fact already attested in the classical world (pinakes, tabellea pictae). In the passage between the "pagan" world and the "Christian" world, in the changing of the divine referents and theologies, we observe a continuity of the ritual symbols and votive practices and, more generally, a significant persistence of forms, functions and meanings in the religious field.
