Abstract

The Bernstein vertex operators, which can be used to build recursively the Schur functions, are extended to superspace. Four families of super vertex operators are defined, corresponding to the four natural families of Schur functions in superspace. Combinatorial proofs that the super Bernstein vertex operators indeed build the Schur functions in superspace recursively are provided. We briefly mention a possible realization, in terms of symmetric functions in superspace, of the super-KP hierarchy, where the tau-function naturally expands in one of the super-Schur bases.

3. Mapping Functional Connectivity Signatures of Pharmacoresistant Focal Cortical Dysplasia‐Related Epilepsy.

Abstract

Objective: To determine common network alterations in focal cortical dysplasia pharmacoresistant epilepsy (FCD‐PRE) using functional connectivity analysis of resting‐state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rsfMRI). Methods: This is a retrospective imaging cohort from Children's National Hospital (Washington, DC, USA) from January, 2011 to January, 2022. Patients with 3‐T MRI‐confirmed FCD‐PRE underwent rsfMRI as part of routine clinical care. Patients were included if they were age 5–22 years at the time of the scan, and had a minimum of 18 months of follow‐up. Healthy, typically‐developing controls were included from Children's National Hospital (n = 16) and matched from Human Connectome Project‐Development public dataset (n = 100). Results: A total of 42 FCD‐PRE patients (20 M:22 F, aged 14.2 ± 4.1 years) and 116 healthy controls (56 M:60 F, aged 13.7 ± 3.3 years) with rsfMRI were included. Seed‐based functional connectivity maps were generated for each FCD, and each seed was used to generate a patient‐specific z‐scored connectivity map on 116 controls. FCD‐PRE patients had mutual altered connectivity in regions of dorsal attention, default mode, and control networks. Functional connectivity was diminished within the FCD dominant functional network, as well as in homotopic regions. Cluster specific connectivity patterns varied by pathological subtype. Higher FCD connectivity to the limbic network was associated with increased odds of Engel I outcome. Interpretation: This study demonstrates diminished functional connectivity patterns in FCD‐PRE, which may represent a neuromarker for the disease, independent of FCD location, involving the dorsal attention, default mode, and control functional networks. Higher connectivity to the limbic network is associated with a seizure‐free outcome. Abstract

The theory of symmetric functions has been extended to the case where each variable is paired with an anticommuting one. The resulting expressions, dubbed superpolynomials, provide the natural N=1 supersymmetric version of the classical bases of symmetric functions. Here we consider the case where two independent anticommuting variables are attached to each ordinary variable. The N=2 super-version of the monomial, elementary, homogeneous symmetric functions, as well as the power sums, are then constructed systematically (using an exterior-differential formalism for the multiplicative bases), these functions being now indexed by a novel type of superpartitions. Moreover, the scalar product of power sums turns out to have a natural N=2 generalization which preserves the duality between the monomial and homogeneous bases. All these results are then generalized to an arbitrary value of N. Finally, for N=2, the scalar product and the homogenous functions are shown to have a one-parameter deformation, a result that prepares the ground for the yet-to-be-defined N=2 Jack superpolynomials., Comment: 36 pages

Abstract

This article discusses the use of arterial spin labeling (ASL)–magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) as a noninvasive technique to identify the seizure onset zone in patients with epilepsy. The ASL-MRI technique uses radiofrequency pulsations to tag the patient's carotid arterial blood as a tracer, allowing for the generation of a cerebral perfusion map that is related to cerebral blood flow. The article presents a case study of a young male with epilepsia partialis continua (EPC) in whom ASL-MRI was able to identify a radiologic focal cortical dysplasia (FCD) as the seizure onset zone. The authors suggest that ASL-MRI may be beneficial in localizing the seizure focus in patients with new onset seizures, particularly in nonlesional cases. They also highlight the advantages of ASL-MRI, such as its safety (radiation-free), wide availability, and noninvasiveness. [Extracted from the article]

Abstract

Multiple sclerosis (MS) most often affects young adults. It is evidenced by abnormal patches on the brain and spinal cord, with symptoms including tremor and paralysis. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a diagnostic technique that uses the magnetic properties of elements to produce images of tissues and organs. MRI has been found to be useful in evaluating and diagnosing brain and spinal cord abnormalities associated with MS, but it often cannot distinguish between lesions that are related to MS and lesions that are not related to MS but have a similar appearance. An MRI finding that more specifically indicates MS would be desirable. It has been reported that the corpus callosum (CC), a structural part of the brain connecting the two hemispheres, shows specific changes on MRIs of patients with MS. This study reviewed images of the CC obtained from 42 MS patients and 127 patients with other brain abnormalities to determine whether there were any specific changes in the CC of MS patients that could be used in diagnosing the disease. The callosal-septal interface (CSI), the area where the CC and the septum pellucidum meet, was abnormal on MRI in 39 of 42 (93 percent) of the MS patients. Only three of the 127 (2.4 percent) non-MS patients exhibited such abnormalities. These results indicate that magnetic resonance imaging of the CC can be both highly sensitive and specific in detecting abnormalities that are indicative of MS. Abstract

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Scalp swelling associated with cranial burst fracture, a widely diastatic skull fracture of infants associated with dural laceration and acute cerebral extrusion, may be confused with that of a simple subgaleal hematoma. Both conditions can also be associated with hemorrhagic shock. We sought to improve the early evaluation of infants believed to have sustained cranial burst fracture by including MR imaging, since this study clearly delineates the dural-cortical interface, the site of injury. METHODS: Seven infants aged 1 through 11 months who sustained cranial burst fractures, all initially imaged with skull radiography and CT, were studied or treated from 1992 through 1996. MR imaging was obtained after resuscitation and stabilization. RESULTS: Surgery or autopsy confirmed MR findings (dural laceration and extracalvarial cerebral tissue) in all seven infants. CONCLUSION: MR imaging allows early diagnosis of skull fracture associated with acute cerebral extrusion.
