5. Eco-Design of Thermopressing through Induction of 100% Coriander-Based Fiberboards: Optimization of Molding Conditions.

Abstract

The hot pressing process for 100% coriander-based fiberboards was optimized using an induction RocTool system, which offers rapid mold heating and cooling. The fiberboards were made using deoiled press cake as a protein binder and extrusion-refined straw as reinforcement. Doehlert's experimental design was used to evaluate the influence of pressure (10–50 MPa), molding time (60–300 s), and mold temperature (155–205 °C) on fiberboard properties, energy consumption, cost, and environmental impact. The results showed that the RocTool device allows for better temperature control during shaping throughout the mold, resulting in mechanical properties that are both more homogeneous across the entire surface of the panel and, more importantly, substantially improved. Using the isoresponse curves, the optimal hot pressing conditions were 35 MPa, 300 s, and 205 °C, corresponding to a 40.6 MPa flexural strength. However, it was observed that to achieve an MDF-like fiberboard with minimal production costs, much less restrictive molding conditions were sufficient, i.e., 32.5 MPa, 170 s, and 160 °C. The study revealed that maximum thermopressing conditions emitted 3.87 kg of CO2 eq., while conditions leading to the MDF-like board reduced emissions to 1.45 kg CO2 eq., resulting in a more environmentally friendly material. Abstract

The worldwide fish consumption has more than doubled between 1961 (9 kg per capita) and 2019 (20.5 kg) (FAO, 2022) The production in the EU amounted to 5.7 million tonnes of products from catches and aquaculture in 2018 (European Commission, 2020). Of this amount, approximately 25% – 35% is discarded as waste with variable nutrient composition and water content without further valorisation (Villamil et al., 2017). To evaluate the feasibility of producing bio-based fertilizers from the macro nutrients contained in these wastes, the Horizon2020 project Sea2Land piloted different technologies. Their environmental performance was analysed with a cradle to factory gate life cycle assessment (LCA) at two stages of production: pilot stage and industrial stage. The sidestreams were assumed to be burden-free. First results identify the main environmental hotspots, at both stages, to be the implemented concentration and drying processes such as membrane filtration or spray drying, the transport of the raw materials and the packaging of the final product. On the other hand, machines do generally not contribute much to environmental impacts and factory buildings’ contribution is mainly at pilot level and with regard to mineral resources use. To lower the environmental impacts of bio-based fertilisers from fish waste, the concentration of sidestreams should be improved by using of more efficient technologies (e.g. with heat recovery) or alternative energy sources. Secondly, the production needs to be in close geographic distance of the source of the fish waste generation and the amount of packaging materials should be minimized.

Abstract

The environmental performance of emerging bio-based technologies must be assessed at an early stage of their development, when the process can still be modified for sustainable optimization, i.e. including environmental, social and economic aspects. The Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) methodology is already recognized as an effective solution for environmental analysis. However, the data obtained at the laboratory scale are incomplete in the initial stage of the eco-design of a new synthesis route, which complicates the inventory of the life cycle. Coupling a process modelling/simulation tool with LCA has proven to be an effective solution for providing inventory data. The simulation of a process is based on the selection of models allowing the environmental, energy and economic optimization of a technology to be developed on the production scale. The choice of models for the reaction and separation steps will certainly have a significant impact on the results of the environmental assessment. This article is dedicated to the study of the impact of the degree of complexity of the modelling of the reaction pathway on the environmental assessment of the process of methanolysis of urea to produce dimethyl carbonate (DMC).

Abstract

The environmental assessment of innovative bio-based technologies at an early stage is necessary. A promising solution is to couple a process simulation tool with life cycle assessment. However, the impact of the modeling of the reaction and of separation steps on the environmental impacts has to be studied. This article deals with the impact of the degree of complexity of the modeling of a reaction route on the environmental performance. The corresponding case study is the production of dimethyl carbonate (DMC) via methanolysis of urea. Three scenarios were designed to model the three reactions composing the reaction pathway, which correspond to different degrees of knowledge of these reactions at the laboratory scale. Scenarios were evaluated from an environmental point of view. Hot spots analysis highlighted the low contribution of the reaction (R1) for the production of the methyl carbamate, of the separation by distillation of the mixture resulting from this reaction, of the infrastructure. Raw materials appear as the major contributor. The reaction (R2) for the production of DMC and the separation for purification of the DMC present significant impacts due to energy requirements. For the three scenarios, heating has a preponderant impact on a large number of categories. The three studied scenarios conduct to a coherent material balance quite similar, but the results of the energy balance diverge. Abstract

This study is focused on Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) method to support the waste valorisation to bio-based composite material in French olive oil circular economy (CE). Its aim is to demonstrate how to shift from a traditional linear production to a circular olive production system that recovers materials from organic residues. On one hand, a comprehensive environmental assessment of eleven scenarios representing French olive oil production is performed. A comparison of the environmental performance from a life cycle perspective is made among the different scenarios. This analysis is conducted from a business-as-usual perspective: a linear production without valorisation of by-products. On the other hand, the environmental performance of an Olive Pomace based-composite for the decking sector is evaluated. The last part addresses the connection of the LCA from a business-as-usual perspective with the LCA of olive pomace valorisation to demonstrate how LCA can support the transition from traditional linear to circular olive production and can feed decision-making process. In the transition to a circular system in which waste is recovered for recycling, a new product is created that can replace another product with the same function. Abstract

Germanium (Ge) PiN photodetectors are fabricated and electro-optically characterised. Unintentionally and p-type doped Ge layers are grown in a reduced-pressure chemical vapour deposition tool on a 200 mm diameter, <001>-oriented, p-type silicon (Si) substrates. Thanks to two Ge growth temperatures and the use of short thermal cycling afterwards, threading dislocation densities down to 107 cm-2 are obtained. Instead of phosphorous (P) ion implantation in germanium, the authors use in situ phosphorous-doped poly-crystalline Si (poly-Si) in the n-type regions. Secondary ion mass spectrometry revealed that P was confined in poly-Si and did not diffuse in Ge layers beneath. Over a wide range of tested device geometries, production yield was dramatically increased, with almost no short circuits. At 30 °C and at -0.1 V bias, corresponding to the highest dynamic resistance, the median dark current of 10 µm diameter photodiodes is in the 5-20 nA range depending on the size of the n-type region. The dark current is limited by the Shockley-Read-Hall generation and the noise power spectral density of the current by the flicker noise contribution. A responsivity of 0.55 and 0.33 A/W at 1.31 and 1.55 µm, respectively, is demonstrated with a 1.8 µm thick absorption Ge layer and an optimized anti-reflection coating at 1.55 µm. Abstract

International audience; Anaerobic digestion (AD) is a waste treatment technology based on organic matter degradation by microorganisms in the absence of oxygen. This process generates two valuables products, biogas and digestate. While biogas is recognized and exploited for its energy potential, digestate could be an interesting fertilizer thanks to its rich-nutrient composition. However, implementation of AD still raises concerns about energy transportation, consequences of digestate spreading and poor conversion to carbon during digestion. To overcome the issues linked to AD, to integrate anaerobic digestion with the pyrolysis of digestate is an innovate path. This study aims to analyze sustainability of a multifunctional process coupling anaerobic digestion and pyrolysis. The process is applied to the treatment of sewage sludge and quinoa residue in co-digestion. To evaluate environmental impacts, life cycle assessment (LCA) is realized from a cradle-to-gate perspective, using SimaPro software (V8.5.2) and Environmental Footprint EF 3.0 method. Results underline that the main contributor to environmental impacts is the treatment of bio-oil, a pyrolysis product, while other impacts could be counterbalance thanks to energy production

Abstract

International audience; One of the industrial ecology ful fillments is the concept of eco-industrial park (EIP). This cooperative approach leads to a more resources-efficient production system at the park scale, namely a more sustainable industrial system. Eco-industrial parks are generally growing on existing industrial area. Existing methodological and technical tools could support such development in this context but this work aims to support initiative for the preliminary design and layout of industrial ecosystem in a new area. If the management of area allows to fulfill the technical and economic factors for many eco-industrial synergies, this is unsatisfactory concerning the relationships issues. The study of the life cycle of the park underlines importance of the layout and commercialization phases. It makes it possible to select the best technical and economical compromise for synergies and to plan and ease future information exchange, collaborative context and trust. The experimental field is a 200ha park in Occitanie region namely “Les Portes du Tarn”, 20 km far from Toulouse (south of France). SPLA81 urban planning agency started the ecosystem development process in 2012 and needs for a formal methodology and a toolbox for layout and commercialization process and its related decisions. The scientific proposal targets the development of a simple and operational group-based decision-making methodology for industrial ecology, especially to prospect and approve a company to join the park and its territory, to identify the “optimal” synergies and to select the appropriate slot within the park area. The first applicant, a wine production industrial unit, applies this approach to join the industrial park.

Abstract

International audience; In decision tasks such as bioprocess efficiency comparison, scientific literature is a valuable source of data. This large number of scientific data is heterogeneously structured, mainly in textual format. Innovative tools able to integrate and treat constantly new information are required. In this context, the use of semantic web methods such as ontologies seems relevant to structure the experimental information. Imprecision and uncertainty can arise from data incompleteness and variability. This is particularly true for processes involving biological materials. Document reliability should also be considered. Soft computing methods have the potential to be the kingpin of specialized software that can be integrated in decision support systems (DSS) intended to solve these issues. This paper presents the implementation of a pipeline which permits to: (1) structure and integrate the experimental data of interest by using ontologies, (2) assess data source reliability, (3) compute and visualize indicators taking into account data imprecision.

Abstract

With the increase of the world population, waste production and its impact on the environment increase. Wastes can be an opportunity for the development of a circular economy and an industrial ecology. This paper proposes a framework based on KE, sustainability engineering and life cycle thinking for supporting decisions on agricultural by-product valorization dedicated to engineers, academics, managers and policy decision makers. Five steps describe the framework: the definition of the goal and the scope, the extraction of the relevant information from heterogeneous data source feeding ontologies, the life cycle inventory, the impact calculation assessment and the results ranking. A case study related to agricultural by-product valorization, in the biorefinery area, allows to validate the approach and the associated framework. Rice straw is transformed in glucose for bio-carburant production. Four different rice straw pretreatment processes are analyzed using a collection of data sources. Abstract

We propose a dedicated tool that permits the evaluation of food production process sustainability, in particular virgin olive oil process. It is based on an integrated process-product-enterprise ((PE)-E-2) approach that allows systematically taking into account sustainable issues within food production process design. The domain specific tool "&cOlive" is implemented as an Excel application. This CAPE based tool assesses sustainability of a future or an existing system of virgin olive oil production. In the first case, 28 configurations of the system may be chosen based on 7 agricultural scenarios and 4 industrial scenarios (extraction). These scenarios were built with field data directly collected through questionnaires and visits of olive oil producers in France, in the context of the European OiLCA project. Complementary data were provided by French experts from the Centre Technique de l'Olivier. They completed and reinforced the relevance and the quality of the model. Finally, commercial databases such as Ecoinvent for environmental LCA were used. The tool offers the opportunity to simulate a lot of scenarios and to study the influence of different extraction technologies and different operating parameters on sustainability.

Abstract

L'objectif de ces travaux est de contribuer à augmenter la connaissance sur la réutilisation des eaux de ruissellement de toiture. Une maison individuelle située en zone rurale et équipée d'une toiture en tuiles, et un bâtiment collectif situé en zone périurbaine avec une toiture terrasse bitumée, ont été étudiés. Les eaux de pluie collectées sont réutilisées dans l'habitat pour l'alimentation des chasses d'eau. Un suivi analytique a permis l'étude de la qualité de l'eau en plusieurs points des systèmes. Les eaux stockées sont clairement non potables et révèlent une contamination microbiologique très variable. Des pathogènes ont été quantifiés à plusieurs reprises. La qualité de l'eau distribuée ne peut donc pas être garantie au cours de l'année, d'où la recommandation d'une désinfection de l'eau avant distribution. Un suivi hydraulique a permis de déterminer les volumes d'eau potable substitués et les taux de couverture de besoins en eau. Un modèle du comportement hydraulique a été développé puis utilisé pour discuter le dimensionnement des cuves. En présence d'une désinfection, les installations ne sont économiquement pas rentables. En l'absence de désinfection, le bilan économique est positif mais la période de retour sur investissement supérieure à la durée de vie de l'installation. Une première analyse de cycle de vie a été réalisée pour comparer les deux échelles étudiées. Dans les deux cas, les processus les plus impactants sont liés aux consommations électriques de l'éventuelle désinfection ultra-violet et des pompes. En présence d'une désinfection, l'échelle du bâtiment collectif présente des impacts plus faibles. Une deuxième analyse de cycle de vie a été réalisée pour étudier la pertinence de la substitution de l'eau du réseau d'eau public par de l'eau de pluie à l'échelle d'un particulier. Elle n'est pas probante d'un point de vue environnemental.

International audience; The European Water Framework Directive requires the monitoring of priority pollutants entering surface waters. This includes notably stormwater network. In this study, the contribution of discharges from washes stations to pollution of stormwater network was investigated. Six washes stations discharging wastewater into the stormwater network were selected: (i) one trucks wash station, (ii) two self-service stations for cars and motorcycles, (iii) two bus wash stations, (iv) one subway wash station. Classical parameters (conductivity, pH, turbidity, chemical oxygen demand, total nitrogen, total phosphorus, suspended solid) and organic pollutants (Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons, Total Hydrocarbons and Methylterbutylether) were2 checked and measured. Concentrations were compared with limit values from Greater Toulouse decontamination service regulations for the discharge licenses of carwashes, and under article 32 of the French decree for discharges into the natural environment (Decree February 2nd 29 , 1998) and with the proposal directive from the European Parliament and the Council, dealing with environmental quality standards (European Commission, 2006). The result showed a decrease of pollution downstream of the pre- treatments for subway washes stations but not for bus washes stations. According to the directives, the pre- treatment processes were not sufficient to justify a discharge into the stormwater network.

Abstract

Thanks to growing environmental concerns in public opinion, bioremediation processes are more and more used to decontaminate soils from organic compounds. Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are known to be world wide spread persistent organic pollutants (POPs). The white rot fungus Phanerochaete chrysosporium is able to degrade PCBs in water, and soil As POPs, PCBs can also be adsorbed onto organic matter, such as Phanerochaete chrysosporium mycelium. This study aims at estimating the fractioning of truly degraded PCBs, adsorbed PCBs and residual PCBs in an aqueous bioremediation assay with Phanerochaete chrysosporium. Di-, tri- tetra-, penta-, hexa-, hepta-chlorinated biphenyls (IUPAC numbers: PCB28, PCB52, PCB101, PCB118, PCB138, PCB153, PCB180) are extracted from 500 mL aqueous bioremediation assays using a liquid-liquid extraction with n-hexane. Analyses are performed on a high resolution gas chromatography coupled with a low resolution mass spectrometry. The study reveals that the adsorbed PCBs fraction ranges from 42% to 54%, whereas the degraded one ranges from 39% to 49%. No PCBs were detected in the residual water (limit of detection: 13 ng.L-1).

45. MONITORING OF STORMWATER BETWEEN 2002 AND 2010 - WHAT IS THE EVOLUTION OF STORMWATER QUALITY?

Abstract

The city of Toulouse with its separate storm sewer system is ideal for studying stormwater. That is why since 2002, three stormwater sampling campaigns were conducted. Samples were taken from the outlets of two storm drains located in heavily and moderately urbanized areas. Sampling was undertaken during wet weather and dry weather during the year 2002 for the first campaign, during the year 2007 for the second one and during the year 2010 for the last one. The overall pollution parameters were analyzed (chemical oxygen demand, biological oxygen demand, total nitrogen, ammonium, nitrate, total phosphorus, suspended solid matter, volatile suspended matter, pH, conductivity, turbidity) and the presence of some micropollutants was studied (6 PAHs, MTBE and total hydrocarbons). Results showed an evolution of stormwater quality between the three campaigns and an improvement of nutrient and suspended solid concentrations. They indicated also that dry weather had an impact on annual pollution load from separate storm sewer and that level of urbanization was also a factor whatever the year of sampling.
