Analysis of the seasonal influence on the physicochemical characteristics and bioactive compounds of bacuri provides support for optimizing production, promoting sustainability and boosting local economic development. This study analyzed bacuri pulp over consecutive years of production (2020-2023), observing variations in dry matter, lipids, soluble solids, pH, proteins, and minerals across harvest seasons. Notable amino acids include glutamic acid, arginine, and alanine, essential for bodily functions, in addition to antioxidant compounds such as flavonoids, stilbenes, and flavonols, which vary between harvests. The distinctive flavor is attributed to seven volatile compounds, with cis-linalool oxide being the primary contributor. These levels of rainfall had influenced the composition of the pulp, such as the content of sugars, minerals and amino acids. The temperature variations, together with a relative humidity of between 67% and 85%, influenced the development of the fruit, affecting ripening time, the profile of organic acids and other biochemical components relevant to the aroma and flavor of the pulp. The best climatic conditions for bacuri pulp, rich in phenolic compounds, sugars, amino acids, and minerals were observed in 2021. That year experienced high rainfall, high relative humidity, and mild temperatures, which favored nutrient uptake and the synthesis of bioactive compounds. These results, reflecting the seasonal dynamics influenced by the climate, expand the understanding of bacuri and its potential. Introduction: Foraminal Enlargement (FE) is a cleaning performed in the apical-most region of the tooth, in order to optimize root disinfection. This systematic review evaluated the influence of FE during root canal treatment on bacterial reduction and repair of the periapical lesion., Materials and Methods: Searches in PubMed/MEDLINE, Scopus, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, Embase, Scielo, Lilacs and OpenGrey were performed until January-2024. Ex vivo and in vivo studies evaluating the effects of FE in the bacterial reduction and repair of the periapical lesion were included, respectively, followed by risk of bias assessment (modified version of Joanna Briggs Institute's for ex vivo studies and Systematic Review Centre for Laboratory animal Experimentation's risk of bias tools for in vivo studies). The meta-analysis was not feasible and a qualitative summary for each outcome was provided., Results: Of 950 studies, 2 in vivo studies were eligible, using animal models with infected teeth. Of these two, periapical repair was evaluated with hematoxylin-eosin stain, and FE improved periapical healing. Regarding ex vivo studies, 3 were eligible, using extracted human teeth. The inoculations in ex vivo models were performed with Enterococcus (E.) faecalis, and FE reduced E. faecalis in the ex vivo models., Conclusions: Foraminal enlargement seems to increase bacterial reduction within the root canal, and provide major periapical tissue repair on the histological analysis in animal studies. External cervical resorption (ECR) is a type of dental resorption that originates from the loss of the cementum's protective layer. The direct exposure of dentin to the periodontal ligament may lead to the invasion of clastic cells through an entry point on the external root surface into the dentinal tissue, causing resorption. Depending on the extension of ECR, different treatments are proposed. Although the literature presents distinct materials and methods for restoring ECR areas, an existing gap is related to care in the treatment of the supporting periodontal tissue. Guided tissue regeneration (GTR)/guided bone regeneration includes the stimulation of bone formation in bone defects using different types of membranes (resorbable and nonresorbable), regardless of its association with bone substitutes or grafts. Despite the benefits of guided bone regeneration, the application of this method in cases of ECR is still under-explored in the literature. Thus, the present case report uses GTR with xenogenic material and polydioxanone membrane in a case of class IV ECR. The success of the present case is related to the correct diagnosis and treatment plan. Complete debridement of resorption areas and restoration with biodentine were effective in tooth repair. GTR contributed to the stabilization of supporting periodontal tissues. The concentration and reconstitution processes of grape juices can result in losing compounds associated with beverage quality. In this context, three tanks containing 50,000 L of grape juice were individually concentrated up to 68 °Brix using a triple vacuum concentrator. The concentrated juice was reconstituted up to the original °Brix of the whole juice (18.4). Phenolic compounds, sugars and organic acids were quantified by high-performance-liquid-chromatography. "Foxy" aromatic compounds were also quantified by gas-chromatography/mass-spectrometry. The concentration and reconstitution process resulted in significant losses (Tukey test, p < 0.01) of trans-caftaric acid, decreasing from 397.08 to 159.14 mg/L, chlorogenic-acid from 34.97 to 8.44 mg/L, aromatic furaneol compound from 9.06 to 1.93 mg/L, as well as total losses for gallic-acid, caffeic-acid, p-coumaric-acid, syringic-acid, hesperidin, pelargonidin-3-glucoside and epicatechin compounds. The present work had the objective of producing liqueurs from mango peels (varieties "Haden" and "Tommy Atkins") by processes of alcoholic maceration and maceration with pectinase, as well as to evaluate bioactive compounds by reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography coupled to diode array detection and fluorescence-detection (RP-HPLC/DAD/FD) and in vitro antioxidant activity (AOX), for by-product potential reuse. Alcoholic maceration in wine ethanol (65% v / v ) produced liqueurs with higher phytochemical and AOX content. Maceration with pectinase resulted in liqueurs with higher quercetin-3- O -glucopyranoside content. In relation to mango varieties, Haden liqueurs presented higher bioactive content than Tommy Atkins liqueurs. The liqueurs presented high antioxidant activity. The main bioactive compounds found were flavanols (epicatechin-gallate, epigallocatechin-gallate), flavonols (quercetin-3- O -glucopyranoside and rutin), and phenolic acids (gallic acid, o -coumaric acid, and syringic acid). The present study showed that the production of liqueur enabled the recovering of an important part of the bioactive content of mango peels, suggesting an alternative for the recovery of antioxidant substances from this by-product.

Pulp canal calcification is characterized by the deposition of calcified tissue along the canal walls. As a result, the root canal space can become partially or completely obliterated. Recently, "guided endodontics" has been reported as an alternative solution in cases of partial or completed canal obliteration. Although this technique can enhance minimally invasive access to the calcified canal, it has been shown that the incisal surfaces are often removed during the access of anterior teeth. This report describes 2 cases of guided endodontics using conventional palatal access in calcified anterior teeth and discusses the applicability of this approach in cases of pulp canal calcification with apical periodontitis and acute symptoms. A fast method for the identification and stability evaluation of the aggregation pheromone rhynchophorol, which is the main substance used for chemical communication by the beetle Rhynchophorus palmarum L., was validated. In addition, the technique was applied to the evaluation of two inorganic matrices, with the objective of using them as controlled-release devices. The analytical method showed good linearity (R 2  = 0.9978), precision (CV% < 1.79), recovery (84-105%) and limits of detection (0.2 mg mL -1 ) and quantification (0.3 mg mL -1 ); in compliance with the validation legislation established by ANVISA. In the interaction study, the inorganic matrices zeolite L and Na-magadiite showed high rates of pheromone recovery without promoting its degradation for a period of 180 days, which is not reported in the literature for other matrices. The structures of the zeolite L/rhynchophorol and Na-magadiite/rhynchophorol composites showed slower release kinetics during the storage period when compared with pure pheromone, which is desirable since it extends the period of rhynchophorol release and decreases the negative effects caused by the environmental parameters.

A methodology for the rapid determination of the aromatic compounds methyl anthranilate (MA), 2'-aminoacetophenone (2-AAP) and furaneol by GC-MS was validated and used to characterize grape juice and wine elaborated with the new Brazilian grape varieties cultivated in northeastern Brazil, and Brazilian grape nectars. The method presented linearity (R 2  ˃ 0.9952), good accuracy (CV < 12.9%), recovery (76.6% to 106.3%), limit of detection (23 μg L -1 to 94 μg L -1 ) and limit of quantification (96 μg L -1 to 277 μg L -1 ) acceptable in only 20 min of running. The methodology was considered satisfactory for the purpose, being a simple and rapid method for the determination of these compounds in grape derivatives drinks. In the characterization of the nectars the compound that stood out was the MA, being its presence attributed to the addition of flavorings in these products. Background: The peel of yellow passion fruit is as an agro-industrial waste of great environmental impact, representing more than 50% of the total weight of the fruit. For this reason, and also considering its importance as a source of functional components such as pectin, this organic waste is increasingly attracting the attention of researchers. The aim of this study was to investigate the physico-chemical composition and physical properties of this material, which may be of interest to the food industry., Results: We obtained two samples of passion fruit peel flour applying different processes: flour without treatment (FWOT) and flour with treatment by maceration (FWT). It was found that the flour samples contain, respectively, 372.4 g kg -1 and 246.7 kg -1 of soluble fiber and, according to the FTIR analysis, this material corresponds to high and low methoxyl pectins, respectively., Conclusion: The flour obtained by maceration (FWT) offers greater benefits for industrial use, with 60% fewer tannins and greater thermal stability. In addition, this sample does not reabsorb moisture as easily, although FWOT also shows potential for use in dietary products. This study aimed to investigate whether the -1026(A>C)(rs2779249) and +2087(A>G)(2297518) polymorphisms in the NOS2 gene were associated with chronic periodontitis (CP) and with salivary levels of nitrite (NO₂ - ) and/or nitrate + nitrite (NOx). A group of 113 mixed-race patients were subjected to periodontal, genetic, and biochemical evaluations (65 CP/48 periodontally healthy subjects). DNA was extracted from oral epithelial cells and used for genotyping by polymerase chain reaction (real-time). Salivary NOx concentrations were determined using an ozone-based chemiluminescence assay. Association of CP with alleles and genotypes of the -1026(A>C) polymorphism was found ( X ² test, p = 0.0075; 0.0308), but this was not maintained after multiple logistic regression, performed to estimate the effect of covariates and polymorphisms in CP. This analysis demonstrated, after correction for multiple comparisons, that only the female gender was significantly associated with CP. Polymorphisms analyzed as haplotypes were not associated with CP. NOx levels were significantly higher in the control group of heterozygous individuals for both polymorphisms. In conclusion, the female gender was significantly associated with CP, and higher levels of salivary NOx were found in control subjects and associated with the heterozygous state of the NOS2 polymorphisms, reinforcing the potential of NO metabolites as markers of periodontitis status., Competing Interests: The authors declare no conflict of interest.

Objective: to identify the healthy aging profile in octogenarians in Brazil., Method: this population-based epidemiological study was conducted using household interviews of 335 octogenarians in a Brazilian municipality. The decision-tree model was used to assess the healthy aging profile in relation to the socioeconomic characteristics evaluated at baseline. All of the tests used a p-value < 0.05., Results: the majority of the 335 participating older adults were women (62.1%), were aged between 80 and 84 years (50.4%), were widowed (53.4%), were illiterate (59.1%), had a monthly income of less than one minimum wage (59.1%), were retired (85.7%), lived with their spouse (63.8%), did not have a caregiver (60.3%), had two or more children (82.7%), and had two or more grandchildren (78.8%). The results indicate three age groups with a healthier aging profile: older adults aged 80 to 84 years (55.6%), older adults aged 85 years and older who are married (64.9%), and older adults aged 85 and older who do not have a partner or a caregiver (54.2%)., Conclusion: the healthy aging profile of octogenarians can be explained by age group, marital status, and the presence of a caregiver.

Objective: To evaluate the resistance to femoral fractures among rats treated with the immunosuppressant tacrolimus FK-506 and compare these to untreated rats and rats treated with placebo., Methods: Ninety male Wistar rats were used. The animals were nine weeks old and weighed between 220 g and 280 g. The immunosuppressive agent tacrolimus was used in this study at a dose of 2 mg/kg/day, administered orally. The suspension was administered using an insulin syringe, and the maintenance therapeutic dose was sufficient to maintain the immunosuppressive activity. The animals were randomly divided into three groups (n = 30): group 1, no substance administered; group 2, administration of the immunosuppressant tacrolimus FK-506; and group 3, administration of the vehicle alone. Treatment with FK-506 was administered for 28 days. Total leukocyte counts and differential counts (lymphocytes, monocytes, eosinophils and neutrophils) were evaluated in order to monitor the immunosuppressive effect. Bone densitometry analysis by means of dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) was also performed before and after administration of the drug. To evaluate the resistance to flexion, a support device was developed so that mechanical tests using an EMIC universal testing machine could be carried out., Results: The results from the flexion resistance tests showed statistical differences between groups 1 and 2 (p = 0.001) and between groups 2 and 3 (p = 0.001). No statistical difference was found between groups 1 and 3 (p = 0.995)., Conclusions: The femurs of rats treated with the immunosuppressive agent had lower mechanical strength than did those of normal rats and those that received placebo.

The scope of this study was to construct an indicator of active aging and assess its association with quality of life and possible determinants according to gender. The AGEQOL (Aging, Gender and Quality of Life) study was used to interview 2052 individuals aged 60 years and older residing in Sete Lagoas in the State of Minas Gerais. The association between active aging, quality of life and possible determinants was performed by multiple logistic regression with a 5% level of statistical significance separately for each gender. Most men were in the active aging group (58%), and 51.8% of women were in the normal aging group (p < 0.001). The quality of life in the Physical, Psychological, and total Score domains remained associated with the outcome in the final model for both genders. Among the men, the behavioral and community participation factors were positive predictors of active aging. Women with higher incomes, who did not suffer falls and engaged in community participation, had a better chance of belonging to the active aging group. The conclusion drawn is that quality of life and participation in groups are the main determinants of active aging, and the other factors associated with active aging are different for each gender.

Background: The determinants of self-rated health (SRH) have been widely investigated to explain social differences and gender differences in health. This study aimed to investigate the gender differences in predictors of SRH among Brazilian and Chilean older adults., Methods: We used two samples of older people: 2052 Brazilian community-dwelling participants (1226 women and 862 men) and 1301 Chilean community-dwelling participants (855 women and 446 men). Sequential logistic regression analysis was used to examine the relationships between SRH and potential predictors in a hierarchical model., Results: Overall, 35.5% and 52.1% of individuals in Chile and Brazil, respectively, reported good SRH. There was a gradient association between good SRH and chronic diseases in both countries. Chilean men without chronic disease or with one had a higher chance of good SRH, compared to two or more diseases. For Brazilian men, no or one chronic disease was associated with good SRH. For women, the set of independent predictors for good SRH included no chronic diseases or one chronic disease, and no activities of daily living limitation. For men, the set also included instrumental activities limitation. For Brazilian adults of both genders, depression demonstrated the strongest independent association with good SRH., Conclusions: We conclude that when examining gender differences in predictors of SRH, the similarities are greater than the differences between Brazilian and Chilean older adults. In both countries, physical health was the most important predictor of SRH. In addition, absence of depression was the strongest predictor of good health in older Brazilian adults.

Background: Social capital can be viewed as a societal process that works toward the common good as well as toward the good of the collective based on trust, reciprocity, and solidarity. Our study aimed to present two multivariate statistical analyses to examine the formation of latent classes of social capital using the IQ-SC and to identify the most important factors in building an indicator of individual social capital., Findings: A cross-sectional study was conducted in 2009 among working adolescents supported by a Brazilian NGO. The sample consisted of 363 individuals, and data were collected using the World Bank Questionnaire for measuring social capital. First, the participants were grouped by a segmentation analysis using the Two Step Cluster method based on the Euclidian distance and the centroid criteria as the criteria for aggregate answers. Using specific weights for each item, discriminant analysis was used to validate the cluster analysis in an attempt to maximize the variance among the groups with respect to the variance within the clusters. "Community participation" and "trust in one's neighbors" contributed significantly to the development of the model with two distinct discriminant functions (p < 0.001). The majority of cases (95.0%) and non-cases (93.1%) were correctly classified by discriminant analysis., Conclusions: The two multivariate analyses (segmentation analysis and canonical discriminant analysis), used together, can be considered good choices for measuring social capital. Our results indicate that it is possible to form three social capital groups (low, medium and high) using the IQ-SC.

Introduction: The purpose of this study was to investigate if nickel-titanium instruments with similar designs manufactured by different thermal treatments would exhibit significantly different in vitro behavior., Methods: Thirty-six instruments each of ProTaper Universal (PTU F1; Dentsply Maillefer, Ballaigues, Switzerland), ProFile Vortex (PV; Dentsply Tulsa Dental Specialties, Tulsa, OK), Vortex Blue (VB, Dentsply Tulsa Dental Specialties), and TYPHOON Infinite Flex NiTi (TYP; Clinician's Choice Dental Products, New Milford, CT) (all size 25/.06) were evaluated. Bending resistance, torsion at failure, and dynamic torsional tests were performed with the instruments (n = 12). Analysis of variance and Tukey post hoc tests were applied., Results: Flexibility was significantly higher for TYP compared with the other 3 groups (P < .0001). With respect to the maximum torque at failure, PV group showed the highest resistance to twisting (torsional strength) among the analyzed instruments followed by VB, TYP, and PTU. The TYP group exhibited greater angular deflection at failure compared with the other groups (P < .0001). The mean dynamic torque scores during simulated canal preparation were highest for TYP (3.01 ± 0.71 Ncm) and lowest for PV (1.62 ± 0.79 Ncm). However, no significant differences were observed comparing groups PTU with TYP and VB and VB with PV (P > .05). The highest mean forces were recorded with PTU (7.02 ± 2.36 N) and the lowest with TYP (1.22 ± 0.40 N)., Conclusions: TYP instruments were significantly more flexible than the other instruments tested. The PV group had the highest torsional strength and TYP, despite being the most flexible, showed similar torsional moments to the other instruments, whereas its angular deflection was the highest among the groups., (Copyright © 2015 American Association of Endodontists. Background: In Brazil, a rapidly aging country suffering from large inequalities, the study of the quality of life (QOL) of aged people is important for the future health. The aim of this study was to examine the associations among QOL, gender, and physical and psychosocial health in older Brazilian community-dwelling adults to identify factors that are associated with better QOL., Methods: The "Aging, Gender and Quality of Life (AGEQOL)" study, which included 2,052 respondents aged 60 or older, was conducted in Sete Lagoas, Brazil between January and July 2012. The respondents answered questions regarding their socioeconomic and demographic information, health and social situations, cognitive impairment, depressive symptoms and family satisfaction. The authors also applied the Brazilian version the World Health Organization Quality of Life QOL Assessment-Brief Instrument (WHOQOL-BREF) and the World Health Organization Quality of Life Instrument-Older Adults Module (WHOQOL-Old). Ordinal logistic regression with the Proportional-Odds and Logit function was used to test the association between QOL and physical and psychosocial health according to age and socioeconomic status., Results: Older adults of both genders with five or more years of education, good self-rated health, an absence of depressive symptoms, and no family dysfunction reported better QOL. Retired men had a better QOL compared to non-retired men (OR = 2.2; 95% CI = 1.4-3.2), but this association was not observed in females. Men living in mixed arrangements (OR = 0.5; p = 0.033) and women who did not practice physical activity (OR = 0.7; p = 0.022) tended to have poorer QOL., Conclusions: We conclude that there are gender differences related to better QOL in this sample. Women with good physical and psychosocial health are more likely to have a better QOL. For men, the best QOL was associated with high socioeconomic conditions and good physical and psychosocial health.

Objective: To identify the craniofacial characteristics of patients with sickle cell trait (SCT) and sickle cell anemia (SCA) and to compare these measurements with those of nonaffected subjects., Materials and Methods: Clinically normal patients and those with SCT and SCA were evaluated in this study. The patients were divided into three groups: normal (control), SCA, and SCT (n  =  with 15 in each group). Inclusion criteria were SCA or SCT verified by laboratory methods and no treatment with fixed orthodontics or facial orthopedics. Lateral cephalometric radiographs were carried out and were used to obtain angular and linear measurements of anatomic structures displayed. All markings and measurements were performed by a single examiner., Results: The average ANB was increased in groups with SCA (5.47 ± 2.0°) and SCT (3.80 ± 1.4°), indicating a tendency to Class II. The mean SNA angle was 83.0 ± 3.8° and 82.1±3.5° for SCA and SCT, indicating a proper positioning of the jaw from the skull base. There was an interaction between the group and sex factors for the variable SN-GoGn; measures were higher for men in the SCA group., Conclusion: Patients with SCA and SCT exhibited characteristics of Class II skeletal pattern because of mandibular retrusion. Most patients showed no compensatory maxillary expansion, which was determined by the normal jaw length and absence of maxillary protrusion.

Demographic and socioeconomic conditions play an important role in tooth loss in the population, however, there is little scientific evidence regarding the influence of social capital on this outcome. The scope of this study was to describe the tooth loss profile of adults aged 35-44, who are residents of the surrounding area of the city of Belo Horizonte in the state of Minas Gerais. This cross-sectional exploratory study comprised a sample of 1,013 adults. The dependent variable was tooth loss. Exploratory variables were social capital, demographic and socioeconomic characteristics. The Chi-squared Automatic Interaction Detector (CHAID) was used to map the adult tooth loss profile which was explained by low levels of social capital (47.0%; p < 0.001), more elderly adults (60.2%; p < 0.001), and low education levels (66.3%; p = 0.022). In the high social capital group, age was the determinant factor of tooth loss, irrespective of educational level or per capita income. The conclusion, at the individual level, is that social capital as well as demographic and socio economic characteristics explained the adult tooth loss profile. Individual social capital may have attenuated the negative influence of socioeconomic factors in the population under scrutiny.

The objectives of this study were to identify gender differences in relation to factors associated with oral health satisfaction among the elderly and to estimate the prevalence of edentulism by gender and age. The study included 2,052 elderly (≥ 60 years) residing in Sete Lagoas, Minas Gerais State, Brazil. Poisson regression was used to estimate prevalence of edentulism. The association between oral health satisfaction and independent variables was estimated using ordinal regression with a hierarchical multidimensional model. Prevalence rates for edentulism in males and females were 63% and 68.8%, respectively. Most elderly males (63%) and females (57%) were satisfied with their oral health. The final adjusted model for both genders consisted of variables related to environmental characteristics, health behaviors, and oral health conditions. The study concludes that oral satisfaction is heavily influenced by oral health status and health behaviors, while the associated factors differ by gender.

Giant congenital melanocytic nevus is usually defined as a melanocytic lesion present at birth that will reach a diameter ≥ 20 cm in adulthood. Its incidence is estimated in <1:20,000 newborns. Despite its rarity, this lesion is important because it may associate with severe complications such as malignant melanoma, affect the central nervous system (neurocutaneous melanosis), and have major psychosocial impact on the patient and his family due to its unsightly appearance. Giant congenital melanocytic nevus generally presents as a brown lesion, with flat or mammilated surface, well-demarcated borders and hypertrichosis. Congenital melanocytic nevus is primarily a clinical diagnosis. However, congenital nevi are histologically distinguished from acquired nevi mainly by their larger size, the spread of the nevus cells to the deep layers of the skin and by their more varied architecture and morphology. Although giant congenital melanocytic nevus is recognized as a risk factor for the development of melanoma, the precise magnitude of this risk is still controversial. The estimated lifetime risk of developing melanoma varies from 5 to 10%. On account of these uncertainties and the size of the lesions, the management of giant congenital melanocytic nevus needs individualization. Treatment may include surgical and non-surgical procedures, psychological intervention and/or clinical follow-up, with special attention to changes in color, texture or on the surface of the lesion. The only absolute indication for surgery in giant congenital melanocytic nevus is the development of a malignant neoplasm on the lesion.

Aim: To investigate the influence of cyclic flexural and torsional loading on the flexibility of ProTaper Universal, K3 and EndoSequence nickel-titanium instruments, in view of the hypothesis that these types of loading would decrease the flexibility of the selected NiTi rotary files., Methodology: The instruments evaluated were S2 and F1 ProTaper Universal, sizes 20 and 25, .06 taper K3, and sizes 20 and 25, .06 taper EndoSequence. Flexibility was determined by 45° bending tests according to ISO 3630-1 specification. Values of the bending moment (MB ) obtained with new instruments were considered as the control group (CG). Bending tests were then conducted in instruments previously fatigued to one-fourth and three-fourths of their average fatigue life (fatigue groups, FG¼ and FG¾), as well as after cyclic torsional loading (torsional group, TG). Fatigue tests were carried out in a bench device that allowed the files to rotate freely inside an artificial canal with an angle of curvature of 45° and a radius of 5 mm. Cyclic torsional loading tests were performed that entailed rotating the instrument from zero angular deflection to 180° and then returning to zero applied torque in 20 cycles. Data were analysed using one-way analysis of variance at a significance level of 5%., Results: Simulated clinical use by means of flexural fatigue tests did not affect the flexibility of the instruments, except for a significant increase in flexibility observed in a few instruments (P < 0.05). In addition, comparative statistical analyses between the values of MB measured in new instruments and after cyclic torsional loading showed no significant differences between them (P > 0.05)., Conclusions: The flexibility of rotary ProTaper Universal, K3 and EndoSequence NiTi instruments, measured in bending tests, was not adversely affected by simulated clinical use in curved root canals., (© 2013 International Endodontic Journal. Background: Recently, increasing importance has been placed on the social determinants of health and disease. The present study aimed to determine the prevalence of periodontal disease in Brazilian adults and identify possible relationships with social determinants., Methods: A cross-sectional study was performed using a sample of 743 adults (aged 35-49 years) living in an urban area of a large city in southeastern Brazil. The condition of the periodontium was assessed using the Community Periodontal Index (CPI) according to the diagnostic criteria established by the World Health Organization (WHO). The variables related to social determinants were collected using a structured questionnaire. A descriptive analysis of all study variables was performed. Multiple correspondence analysis was subsequently performed to identify relationships between periodontal disease and the social determinants of health., Results: The periodontal exams showed that 36.5% of adults had a healthy periodontium, 2.0% had gingival bleeding, 47.1% had calculus and 9.5% had periodontal pockets of 4-5 mm. Periodontal pockets of 6 mm or more were the worst periodontal condition found (affecting only 2.1% of the participants). The correspondence analysis enabled us to form three groups with different profiles. The first group was distinguished by the presence of bleeding (gingivitis) or a healthy periodontium. The members of this group were typically aged 35 to 39 years and had 9-12 years or more than 12 years of education. The second group consisted of subjects with calculus and periodontal pockets of 4-5 mm. The members of this group were typically white men aged 40-44 years with incomes greater than $ 300.00. The third group was distinguished by the presence of periodontal pockets of 6 mm or more. The members of this group were typically adult females, black and mixed individuals who had 8 years or less of schooling, individuals with incomes ≤ $ 300.00 and widowers., Conclusion: The results suggest that periodontal health is worse in the group for which the social indicators are worse. Therefore, the social determinants of health also affect the severity of periodontal disease in adults Brazilian society.

Objective: To evaluate the association between the proportion of tooth extractions, socioeconomic indicators, and the availability of oral health services in an underprivileged area of Brazil., Methods: An ecological study was carried out in 52 municipalities in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. The socioeconomic indicators employed were criteria for health care resources allocation, municipal human development index, Theil index, Gini coefficient, and sanitation conditions. Concerning the availability of oral health services, the following were considered: number of inhabitants, number of dental surgeons living in the city, number of dentists working in the public services, and number of municipal oral health care teams. The utilization of oral health services was evaluated using the indicators recommended by the Health Ministry's Basic Care Package (Pacto da Atencão Básica in Portuguese) and the number of procedures carried out in the primary care setting. The 17 variables assessed were grouped into factorial components, which were then analyzed in terms of their relationship with the dependent variable, tooth extractions., Results: The following six components explained 73.5% of the overall variance: socioeconomic conditions, social inequality, Basic Care Package indicators, number of procedures carried out, ratio of dentists to inhabitants, and coverage of the Family Health Strategy. Inequalities in income distribution (P = 0.031) and coverage by the Family Health Strategy (P = 0.015) contributed significantly to explain the difference in the proportion of tooth extractions in the different municipalities under study., Conclusions: The dental loss observed in the region is largely explained by socioeconomic factors and aspects related to the organization of oral health services.

Aim: To compare physical and mechanical properties of one conventional and one thermomechanically treated nickel-titanium (NiTi) wire used to manufacture rotary endodontic instruments., Methodology: Two NiTi wires 1.0 mm in diameter were characterized; one of them, C-wire (CW), was processed in the conventional manner, and the other, termed M-Wire (MW), received an additional heat treatment according to the manufacturer. Chemical composition was determined by energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, phase constitution by XRD and the transformation temperatures by DSC. Tensile loading/unloading tests and Vickers microhardness measurements were performed to assess the mechanical behaviour. Data were analysed using analysis of variance (α = 0.05)., Results: The two wires showed approximately the same chemical composition, close to the 1 : 1 atomic ratio, and the β-phase was the predominant phase present. B19' martensite and the R-phase were found in MW, in agreement with the higher transformation temperatures found in this wire compared with CW, whose transformation temperatures were below room temperature. Average Vickers microhardness values were similar for MW and CW (P = 0.91). The stress at the transformation plateau in the tensile load-unload curves was lower and more uniform in the M-Wire, which also showed the smallest stress hysteresis and apparent elastic modulus., Conclusions: The M-Wire had physical and mechanical properties that can render endodontic instruments more flexible and fatigue resistant than those made with conventionally processed NiTi wires., (© 2011 International Endodontic Journal.)

Background: The chemokine receptor 1 CXCR-1 (or IL8R-alpha) is a specific receptor for the interleukin 8 (IL-8), which is chemoattractant for neutrophils and has an important role in the inflammatory response. The polymorphism rs2234671 at position Ex2+860G>C of the CXCR1 gene causes a conservative amino acid substitution (S276T). This single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) seemed to be functional as it was associated with decreased lung cancer risk. Previous studies of our group found association of haplotypes in the IL8 and in the CXCR2 genes with the multifactorial disease chronic periodontitis. In this study we investigated the polymorphism rs2234671 in 395 Brazilian subjects with and without chronic periodontitis., Findings: Similar distribution of the allelic and genotypic frequencies were observed between the groups (p>0.05)., Conclusions: The polymorphism rs2234671 in the CXCR1 gene was not associated with the susceptibility to chronic periodontitis in the studied Brazilian population.

The aim of this article was to relate the clinical case of an HIV-positive orthodontic patient who reported that her cheeks had been hurting since treatment began. We started with the data collected in anamnesis and by contact with the patient's physician, and a diagnosis of facial lipodystrophy as a result of the use of retroviral drugs was reached. The aim was to investigate the influence of social and health indicators on access to Primary Healthcare in the Belo Horizonte Metropolitan Area, Minas Gerais State, Brazil. Secondary data of 34 municipalities were analyzed; the dependent variables were three basic healthcare indicators: coverage of the Family Health Strategy; coverage of scheduled first dental appointment and mean annual number of appointments in medical specialties per inhabitant. All independent variables were analyzed using Principal Component Analysis, with VARIMAX rotation and Kaiser normalization. Student's t-test was used to compare the components originated by the factor analysis in relation to the primary care indicators with a significance of 5%. The development conditions had significantly greater weight in cities with low FHS coverage (p=0.022). The socioeconomic conditions were weighted significantly higher in municipalities with high dental appointment coverage (p=0.030) and with greater mean number of medical appointments (p=0.022). Socioeconomic and development conditions may be crucial to the identification of municipalities with the best and worst primary care indicators.

There is no consensus about the toxicity of erythropoiesis-stimulating agents among hemodialysis patients. We aimed to calculate the risk of death according to anemia control and erythropoietin (EPO) dosing among end-stage renal disease patients undergoing hemodialysis. We retrospectively studied 156 end-stage renal disease patients on hemodialysis from a single renal unit during 12 months. Participants were classified according to anemia control into four groups: excellent (A), good (B), moderate (C) and bad (D) control. They were also classified according to EPO dosing into two groups: usual and high EPO dosing. The Cox proportional hazards regression model, adjusted for the difference in age, sex, time on dialysis, comorbidity, albumin, and Kt/V index, was performed to calculate the risk of death according to anemia control and EPO dosing profiles. Multivariate analysis by backward stepwise logistic regression was used to calculate the risk of death according to the variables that differed in the comparison between survivors and nonsurvivors. The hazard ratio of death was not significant according to anemia control profile C/D vs. A/B, but hazard ratio was 2.967 (95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.132-7.777; P = 0.027) for high EPO dosing profile patients. The multivariate analysis showed comorbidity (odds ratio [OR] = 8.958; 95% CI = 2.843-26.223; P < 0.001], high EPO dosing profile (OR = 5.172; 95% CI = 1.663-16,081; P = 0.005), age (OR = 1.056; 95% CI = 1.020-1.094; P = 0.002), and mean hemoglobin (OR = 0.435; 95% CI = 0.267-0.709; P = 0.001) to be predictive of death. Interleukin-8 (IL-8), which is responsible for the migration and activation of neutrophils, is an important inflammatory mediator involved in the initiation and amplification of acute inflammatory reactions and chronic inflammatory processes. IL-8 plays an important role in periodontitis, an inflammatory disease characterized by the loss of connective tissue and alveolar bone. The aim of this study was to investigate whether the SNPs rs2227307 (+396) and rs2227306 (+781), and the haplotypes they formed together with the previously investigated rs4073 (-251), were associated with chronic periodontitis susceptibility. Clinical periodontal exams were performed and DNA samples were collected from 493 individuals (223 with periodontitis and 270 controls). Associations between SNPs, haplotypes, and subject phenotypes were analyzed using the χ(2) test followed by multivariate logistic regression modeling. We conclude that the +396TT genotype and the haplotypes ATC/TTC and AGT/TGC were significantly associated with chronic periodontitis susceptibility in Brazilians.

Objective: To investigate the impact of the anterior teeth display during smiling (ATDDS) on the self-perceived psychosocial impacts of malocclusion in adolescents., Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study included a convenience sample of 301 adolescents (mean age 16.1 years, SD 1.8 years; 58.1% female). Two instruments were used for data collection: (1) the Dental Aesthetic Index (DAI) and (2) the Psychosocial Impact of Dental Aesthetics Questionnaire (PIDAQ). In addition, ATDDS was assessed in posing smiling, and adolescents' satisfaction with their dental appearance was investigated. Data analysis included descriptive statistics, Kruskal-Wallis test and Mann-Whitney U-test, Spearman correlation, and multiple linear regression analysis., Results: Significant associations were observed between independent variables (ATDDS, DAI scores, and satisfaction with dental appearance) and total PIDAQ score (R(2)  =  0.37) and dental self-confidence (R(2)  =  0.37), psychological impact (R(2)  =  0.30), esthetic concern (R(2)  =  0.20), and social impact (R(2)  =  0.15)., Conclusion: The excessive anterior teeth display during smiling may potentially influence the self-perceived psychosocial impacts of malocclusion in adolescents depending on the severity level of malocclusion and the self-reported satisfaction with dental appearance.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to assess the influence of both the metallurgic and the geometric characteristics of nickel-titanium endodontic instruments on their flexibility., Study Design: ProTaper Universal (PTU), K3, and EndoSequence (ES) instruments were evaluated. Their chemical composition and phase constitution were characterized by conventional analytical techniques. Instrument diameter and cross-sectional area were evaluated by image analysis. Flexibility was evaluated in bending tests according to the ISO 3630-1., Results: K3 presented the highest average bending moment (M(B)), followed by PTU and ES. A linear relationship was found between M(B) and the instrument's diameter and cross-sectional area at 3 mm from the tip. Alloy chemical compositions were similar among the files, but transformation temperatures were lower for K3 instruments, which presented only austenite as a constituent phase., Conclusion: Nickel-titanium instruments from different manufacturers have unequal behavior related to their flexibility properties. Background: Interleukin 8 (IL-8) is a chemokine related to the initiation and amplification of acute and chronic inflammatory processes. Polymorphisms in the IL8 gene have been associated with inflammatory diseases. We investigated whether the -845(T/C) and -738(T/A) single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the IL8 gene, as well as the haplotypes they form together with the previously investigated -353(A/T), are associated with susceptibility to chronic periodontitis., Methods: DNA was extracted from buccal epithelial cells of 400 Brazilian individuals (control n=182, periodontitis n=218). SNPs were genotyped by the polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) method. Disease associations were analyzed by the chi(2) test, Exact Fisher test and Clump program. Haplotypes were reconstructed using the expectation-maximization algorithm and differences in haplotype distribution between the groups were analyzed to estimate genetic susceptibility for chronic periodontitis development., Results: When analyzed individually, no SNPs showed different distributions between the control and chronic periodontitis groups. Although, nonsmokers carrying the TTA/CAT (OR=2.35, 95% CI=1.03-5.36) and TAT/CTA (OR=6.05, 95% CI=1.32-27.7) haplotypes were genetically susceptible to chronic periodontitis. The TTT/TAA haplotype was associated with protection against the development of periodontitis (for nonsmokers OR=0.22, 95% CI=0.10-0.46)., Conclusion: Although none of the investigated SNPs in the IL8 gene was individually associated with periodontitis, some haplotypes showed significant association with susceptibility to, or protection against, chronic periodontitis in a Brazilian population., (Copyright 2010 Elsevier B.V. Introduction: The purpose of this study was to compare the flexural fatigue and torsional resistance of ProFile GT and GT Series X instruments, taking into account their structural and dimensional characteristics., Methods: Instrument diameter at each millimeter from the tip and pitch length were the dimensional parameters measured. Chemical composition was determined by energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy and phase constitution by x-ray diffraction. Vickers microhardness measurements were performed to assess instrument strength. One group of 20/.06 GT and GTX instruments (n = 10 each) was tested until failure in a flexural fatigue test device, whereas another group of 20/.04 files (n = 10 each) was tested in torsion based on ISO 3630-1., Results: GT and GTX instruments showed approximately the same chemical composition, namely 51at%Ni-49at%Ti (56wt%Ni-44wt%Ti) and contained mainly the beta-phase. GTX instruments showed higher intensity x-ray diffraction peaks and a statistically higher Vickers microhardness. There was a significant decrease in the diameter of GTX in relation to GT instruments from D6 to D9 for 20/.04 instruments and from D4 to D7 for 20/.06 instruments. Pitch length increased along the active part of both instruments, with a steeper increase in GTX. In general, GT Series X instruments were significantly more resistant to flexural fatigue than were similar GT instruments (p < 0.001) but exhibited lower torsional strength (p < 0.001)., Conclusions: Different structural and dimensional characteristics were found in GTX instruments in comparison with GT instruments; this is probably the cause for their higher flexural fatigue resistance and lower torsional strength., (Copyright (c) 2010 American Association of Endodontists. CXCR-2 is a receptor of interleukin-8, which is involved in acute and chronic inflammatory processes. Polymorphisms in the CXCR2 gene have been associated with chronic inflammatory conditions. The aim of this study was to investigate whether the +785(C/T), +1208(T/C), and +1440(G/A) single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the CXCR2 gene, as well as their haplotypes, are associated with susceptibility to periodontitis in Brazilians. DNA was extracted from the buccal epithelial cells of 487 individuals (control = 215; periodontitis = 272). The SNPs were investigated using the sequence-specific primer-polymerase chain reaction method. Associations between the polymorphisms and subject phenotypes were analyzed using the chi-squared statistical test, followed by univariate and multivariate logistic regression modeling. Haplotypes were reconstructed using the expectation-maximization algorithm, and differences in haplotype distribution between the groups were analyzed to estimate genetic susceptibility for periodontitis development. Univariate and multivariate analysis revealed that age, skin color, and smoking status were associated with periodontitis. The +1440 GG genotype was shown to be protective against periodontitis in both univariate and multivariate analysis (odds ratio [OR](adjusted) = 0.42; 95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.19, 0.96). A similar relevant result for the +1440 GG was obtained in an alternative analysis considering a subgroup containing only white nonsmokers (OR = 0.37; 95% CI = 0.15, 0.92). White nonsmokers with the CTG/TCG haplotype appeared to be genetically protected against the development of periodontitis (OR = 0.29; 95% CI = 0.09, 0.89), while those carrying the CTG/TCA haplotype were more susceptible to the development of periodontitis (OR = 2.08; 95% CI = 1.24, 3.51). In conclusion, the +1440 SNP and some haplotypes are associated with periodontitis in Brazilian individuals.

Background: Some haplotypes in the interleukin-4 (IL4) gene were reported to influence IL-4 cytokine production and were associated with inflammatory diseases. Association studies focusing on IL4 gene polymorphisms and periodontal disease provided conflicting results. The aim of this study is to investigate whether IL4 gene polymorphisms and haplotypes were related to chronic periodontitis in a Brazilian population., Methods: The polymorphisms -590(C/T) and +33(C/T) in the IL4 gene were identified by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and restriction fragment-length polymorphism methods; the variable number of tandem repeats (VNTR) was identified by PCR. To assess the differences between the periodontitis group (n = 125) and control group (n = 125), the chi(2) test was used to assess genotype and allele distributions of individual polymorphisms. For haplotypes reconstructed by an expectation-maximization algorithm, the CLUMP program and Fisher exact test were used. Multivariate logistic regression modeling was used to assess the association of age, gender, smoking status, and polymorphism/haplotype with periodontitis., Results: The -590(T), +33(C), and insertion (I) of 70-base pair (bp) alleles and genotypes were more prevalent in the periodontitis group, even after adjusting for covariates. The -590, +33, and insertion (TCI) haplotype was associated with a susceptibility to periodontitis (adjusted odds ratio [OR(adjusted)] = 2.68; 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.50 to 4.80) as was the genotype TCI/CCI (OR(adjusted) = 5.27; 95% CI = 2.28 to 12.18), whereas the TTD (OR(adjusted) = 0.48; 95% CI = 0.26 to 0.91), CTI (OR(adjusted) = 0.28, 95% CI = 0.11 to 0.70), and TTD/CTI (OR(adjusted) = 0.29; 95% CI = 0.08 to 1.13) genotypes were a associated with protection against the development of chronic periodontitis., Conclusion: Significant associations between alleles, genotypes, and haplotypes of polymorphisms in the IL4 gene and chronic periodontitis were verified in Brazilian individuals.

The important inflammatory mediator interleukin-8 (IL-8) is responsible for the migration and activation of neutrophils. The IL8 gene contains a functional single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) (rs4073) in its promoter region that may influence the expression of IL-8, and which has been associated with inflammatory diseases. The purpose of this study was to investigate the association of the SNP (rs4073) in the IL8 gene with susceptibility to periodontitis. DNA was extracted from the buccal epithelial cells of 500 individuals (control n = 224 and periodontitis n = 276). Individuals were genotyped for the SNP (rs4073) using sequence-specific primer polymerase chain reaction. Associations between the SNP (rs4073) and subject phenotypes were analyzed using the chi-squared test, followed by univariate and multivariate logistic regression modeling. The genotype distributions in both groups were consistent with Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium. Univariate and multivariate analysis showed that age, skin color, and smoking status were associated with periodontitis. No significant differences were found for sex and frequencies of alleles and genotypes between the control and periodontitis groups in the univariate analysis. These findings were replicated in the multivariate analysis. The SNP (rs4073) in the IL8 gene is not associated with susceptibility to periodontitis in Brazilian individuals, even after controlling for covariates.

The purpose of this study was to assess how the geometric and dimensional changes made on ProTaper Universal (PTU) instruments in comparison with ProTaper (PT) instruments affected their flexibility and torsional strength. Two groups (n = 12) of each type of shaping (S1 and S2) and finishing (F1, F2, and F3) for both PT and PTU instruments were employed. Tip angle, instrument diameter at each millimeter, and cross-sectional area at 3 mm from the tip were the dimensional parameters measured. Flexibility and torsional strength of each instrument (n = 12) were assessed according to specification ISO 3630-1. Data were analyzed using analysis of variance (alpha = 0.05). Flexibility increased for S1 and F1 PTU instruments and decreased for F2 and F3, whereas torsional resistance increased for S2, F2, and F3. Changes in tip angle were accompanied by variation of tip geometry in all instruments.

Although stroke affects mainly the oral and pharyngeal phases of swallowing, it may also impair esophageal contractions. Our hypothesis is that stroke may affect esophageal transit. The oral, pharyngeal, and esophageal transit was studied by the scintigraphic method in 26 patients (age range=26-83 years), eight of whom had mild dysphagia but all were able to feed orally and who had suffered an acute first-ever ischemic stroke 10-56 days (median = 43 days) before transit evaluation. The control group included 15 healthy volunteers (age range=27-86 years). All subjects swallowed a 5-ml liquid bolus and a 5-ml paste bolus labeled with technetium-99m phytate while sitting in front of the collimator of a gamma camara. The oral, pharyngeal, and proximal, middle, and distal esophageal transit was measured for 20 s. Three patients did not swallow the bolus during the scintigraphic evaluation. There was no difference between patients and controls with respect to oral and pharyngeal transit or clearance of liquid. For paste, the pharyngeal transit time was shorter for patients (0.48+/-0.17 s) than for controls (0.61+/-0.18 s, p=0.027). Also for the paste bolus, the residue in the mouth was greater in patients (18.4+/-13.6%) than in controls (10.2+/-4.9%, p=0.031). The liquid transit duration in the distal esophagus was shorter in patients with stroke (1.74+/-0.84 s) than in controls (2.68+/-1.65 s, p=0.028). There was no difference between patients and controls in esophageal residue. In conclusion, patients with stroke and able to feed orally may have alterations in the esophageal transit of a liquid bolus.

Aim: To correlate the mechanical behaviour in torsion, bending and fatigue tests of K3 instruments with their dimensional characteristics., Methodology: Instrument length, tip angle, distance between blades (pitch length) and the diameter at each millimetre from the tip of sizes 20, 25 and 30, 0.04 taper and sizes 20 and 25, 0.06 taper K3 rotary instruments were measured in an optical microscope equipped with digital micrometers. The cross-sectional area at 3 mm from the tip of the same instruments was determined using digital image analysis of scanning electron microscopy images. Maximum torque and angular deflection, as well as bending moment at 45 degrees were measured according to specification of ISO 3630-1. Fatigue resistance of instruments size 30, 0.04 taper, and sizes 20 and 25, 0.06 taper was determined in a fatigue test bench device., Results: The analysed instruments presented no uniformity in the distance between adjacent blades, but the measured diameters at each millimetre from the tip were regular, showing compliance with manufacturing standards. Torque and bending moment of the tested instruments increased significantly with diameter and cross-sectional area at 3 mm from the instrument tip. The fatigue resistance of the instruments showed a tendency to decrease as the diameter of the instruments increased., Conclusions: The bending moment at 45 degrees and the torsional resistance of K3 instruments can be predicted using instrument diameter and cross-sectional area at 3 mm from the tip. Fatigue resistance decreased as the instrument diameter increased.

We designed a novel PCR-RFLP assay to genotype for the CXCR2 +1440 (G/A) single nucleotide polymorphism, which provides a simple, low-cost, practical, and reproducible method. Allele frequencies in healthy Brazilian individuals were found to be 0.65% for allele A and 0.35% for allele G.

Aim: To evaluate the effect of repeated sterilization cycles in dry oven or autoclave, on the mechanical behaviour and fatigue resistance of rotary endodontic Ni-Ti instruments., Methodology: New Ni-Ti instruments were subjected to five consecutive sterilization cycles in a dry oven or steam autoclave. Microhardness was measured in the nonmachined parts of the shanks of instruments using a Vickers indenter. Specimens of Ni-Ti wires were submitted to the same sterilization protocol and tensile tested until rupture. A group of instruments were fatigued to one half of their average fatigue life and then sterilized. New and sterilized instruments were fatigue tested until rupture. anova tests at alpha = 0.05 were used for statistical analysis., Results: Sterilization procedures resulted in no significant changes in Vickers microhardness, nor in the parameters describing the mechanical behaviour of the wires. However, the number of cycles to failure was statistically higher for all instruments after dry heat or autoclave sterilization cycles. In the instruments previously fatigued to one half of their fatigue life, autoclave sterilization gave rise to an increase of 39% in the remaining number of cycles to failure., Conclusions: Changes in the mechanical properties of Ni-Ti endodontic instruments after five cycles of commonly used sterilization procedures were insignificant. The sterilization procedures are safe as they produced a significant increase in the fatigue resistance of the instruments.

Background: This study evaluates anthropometric and pubertal development parameters in children and adolescents with sporadic and familial occurrence of neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF-1)., Methods: The study involved 23 patients (15 boys, 8 girls) with sporadic (n=12) and familial NF-1(7 affected mothers and 4 fathers), with average age of 12 years (range 5-20 years). All patients answered to a standard questionnaire including family and personal data and, following, they underwent systematized physical examination, with special attention to anthropometric data, dermatologic and pubertal stage according to Tanner's criteria evaluation., Results: Short stature was detected in a 17 year-old patient, 148.5cm height, with score Z of -4.16 and being the even outside of the family conduit. Three male patients had head circumference above of + 2DP from on average for the age. It was not found no case of precocious or delayed puberty., Conclusions: In our study, do not we find significant alterations regarding the stature and pubertal development.
