Objectives . This study aimed to investigate the effects of separate and concurrent exposure to occupational noise and hand-transmitted vibration (HTV) on auditory and cognitive attention. Methods . The experimental study was conducted with 40 construction workers who were exposed to noise (A-weighted equivalent sound pressure level of 90 dB) and to HTV (10 m/s 2 at 31.5 Hz), and concurrent exposure to both for 30 min under simulated work with vibrating equipment used in construction. Cognitive performance aspects were then evaluated from each individual in two pre-exposure and post-exposure settings for each session. Results . The effect sizes of concurrent exposure (HTV + noise) and separate exposure to noise on auditory attention were very close (effect size = 0.648 and 0.626). The largest changes in the difference of response time in both types of attention (selective and divided attention) were related to the concurrent exposure scenario and then exposure to HTV, respectively. The highest effects for the correct response of selective and divided attention are related to concurrent exposure (HTV + noise) and then noise exposure, respectively. Conclusion . The HTV effect during concurrent exposure is hidden in auditory attention, and noise has the main effects. The divided attention was more affected than the selective attention in the different scenarios.

Objectives: The aim was to examine exposure-response relations between occupational hand exposures and carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) and to compare the relation between surgery-treated and non-surgery-treated CTS. The secondary aim was to study sex-specific differences in exposure-response relations., Methods: We conducted a nationwide register-based cohort study of all persons born in Denmark (1945-1994). During follow-up (2010-2013), we identified first-time events of CTS. Occupational hand exposure estimates the year before each follow-up year were obtained by linking individual occupational codes with a job exposure matrix. We used multivariable logistic regression equivalent to discrete survival analysis based on sex and surgery. The excess fraction of cases was calculated., Results: For both sexes, exposure-response relations were found for all occupational hand exposures. Among men, we found OR adj of 3.6 (95% CI 3.2 to 3.8) for hand-related force, 2.9 (95% CI 2.5 to 3.2) for repetitive hand movements, 3.8 (95% CI 2.7 to 5.2) for non-neutral hand posture and 2.5 (95% CI 2.2 to 2.7) for hand-arm vibration in the highest exposure groups. For combined exposure (hand load), OR adj was 3.5 (95% CI 3.1 to 4.0). Slightly higher ORs adj were generally found for surgery-treated CTS compared with non-surgery-treated CTS for both sexes. When comparing sex, somewhat higher ORs adj were found among men. The excess fraction was 42%., Conclusions: Occupational hand exposures carried a 3-5-fold increased risk of CTS with slightly higher risks for surgery-treated compared with non-surgery-treated CTS. Even though CTS occurs more frequently among women, somewhat higher exposure-response relations were found for men compared with women. Objective: The aim of this study is to evaluate the findings of existing systematic reviews (SRs) and provide scientific evidence on the efficacy and safety of whole-body vibration (WBV) in improving bone mineral density (BMD) in postmenopausal women, to provide recommendations and guidance for future high-quality clinical research and SRs., Methods: We conducted searches in six databases (SinoMed, CNKI, Cochrane Library, Embase, PubMed, Web of Science) from the inception of the databases until July 31, 2023. The language was limited to Chinese or English. The methodological quality, risk of bias, and evidence grade of outcomes were evaluated using AMSTAR-2, ROBIS, and GRADE, respectively. Additionally, the degree of overlap in randomized controlled trials (RCTs) among the SRs was calculated using corrected covered area (CCA). Furthermore, we performed quantitative synthesis or descriptive analysis of the relevant data. All relevant operations were independently conducted by two individuals., Results: A total of 15 SRs were included in the analysis, out of which three were qualitative descriptions and 12 were meta-analyses. According to AMSTAR-2, only two SRs were rated as low or moderate, while the remaining 13 SRs were rated as critically low quality. The ROBIS assessment indicated that seven SRs had a low risk of bias, while 8 SRs had a high risk of bias. The overall findings suggest that WBV does not have a significant advantage in improving BMD in postmenopausal women. Furthermore, the CCA results revealed a high overlap in RCTs across five outcomes among the 15 SRs. Only five SRs reported specific adverse reactions/events experienced by participants after WBV interventions, and none of the SRs reported any severe adverse events., Conclusion: The existing evidence cannot establish definitive advantages of WBV in improving BMD in postmenopausal women. Therefore, we do not recommend the use of WBV for improving BMD in postmenopausal women. Our aim was to explore possible relationships between serum levels of biomarkers in patients with hand-arm vibration injury in relation to the severity of the vascular, i.e., Raynaud's phenomenon (RP), and neurosensory manifestations, the current exposure level, and the duration of exposure. This study was of case series design and involved 92 patients diagnosed with hand-arm vibration injury. Jonckheere's trend test was used to assess any association between serum levels of biomarkers and RP as well as neurosensory manifestations, graded by the International Consensus Criteria. Generalized linear models with adjustment for possible confounders were also used for associations between serum levels of biomarkers and; (1) severity of RP recorded as the extent of finger blanching calculated with Griffin score, (2) vibration perception thresholds, (3) magnitude of current exposure as [A(8); (m/s 2 )] value, and (4) the duration of exposure in years. Serum levels of thrombomodulin, von Willebrand factor, calcitonin gene related peptide (CGRP), heat shock protein 27, and caspase-3 were positively associated with severity of RP. Serum levels of CGRP were positively associated with the neurosensory component. No associations with exposure were shown for these biomarkers. For Intercellular adhesion molecule 1 and monocyte chemoattractant protein 1, no associations were found with neither severity nor exposure. Levels of serum biomarkers associated with endothelial injury or dysfunction, inflammation, vasodilation, neuroprotection, and apoptosis were positively associated with the severity of hand-arm vibration injury., (© 2024. Hand-arm vibration is a common occupational exposure that causes neurological impairment, myalgia, and vibration-induced Raynaud's phenomena or vibration white fingers (VWF). The pathological mechanism is largely unknown, though several mechanisms have been proposed, involving both immunological vascular damage and defective neural responses. The aim of this study was to test whether the substances interleukin-33 (IL-33), macrophage-derived chemokine (MDC), interleukin-10 (IL-10), endothelin-1 (ET-1), C-C motif chemokine ligand 20 (CCL20), calcitonin, and thromboxane (TXA 2 ) changed before and after occupational hand-arm vibration exposure. 38 full-time shift workers exposed to hand-arm vibration were recruited. All the participants underwent medical examinations regarding symptoms of Raynaud's phenomena. In 29 of the participants, the concentration of IL-33, MDC, IL-10, ET-1, CCL20, calcitonin, and TXA 2 was measured before and after a workday. There was a significant increase in ET-1 and calcitonin concentration and a decrease in the CCL20 concentration after the work shift in all participants. In the group suffering from VWF, but not in the non-VWF group, MDC was statistically significantly lower before the work shift ( p = .023). The VWF group also showed a significant increase in MDC after the work shift. Objective: This study aims to clarify the relationship between peripheral neuropathy in hand-arm vibration syndrome and cumulative exposure index., Methods: 68 participants without symptoms were surveyed. The participants were divided into three groups based on past and current vibration exposure (VE)., Results: Comparison among groups according to past VE showed that the median and ulnar sensory nerve conduction velocities and median sensory nerve action potential (SNAP) amplitude were significantly lower in past high and low exposure groups than in the past nonexposure group. Aims/introduction: This study aimed to assess if patients can be divided into different strata, and to explore if these correspond to the risk of diabetic foot complications., Materials and Methods: A set of 28 demographic, vascular, neurological and biomechanical measures from 2,284 (1,310 men, 974 women) patients were included in this study. A two-step cluster analysis technique  was utilised to divide the patients into groups, each with similar characteristics., Results: Only two distinct groups: group 1 (n = 1,199; 669 men, 530 women) and group 2 (n = 1,072; 636 men, 436 women) were identified. From continuous variables, the most important predictors of grouping were: ankle vibration perception threshold (16.9 ± 4.1 V vs 31.9 ± 7.4 V); hallux vibration perception threshold (16.1 ± 4.7 V vs 33.1 ± 7.9 V); knee vibration perception threshold (18.2 ± 5.1 V vs 30.1 ± 6.5 V); average temperature sensation threshold to cold (29.2 ± 1.1°C vs 26.7 ± 0.7°C) and hot (35.4 ± 1.8°C vs 39.5 ± 1.0°C) stimuli, and average temperature tolerance threshold to hot stimuli at the foot (43.4 ± 0.9°C vs 46.6 ± 1.3°C). From categorical variables, only impaired sensation to touch was found to have importance at the highest levels: 87.4% of those with normal sensation were in group 1; whereas group 2 comprised 95.1%, 99.3% and 90.5% of those with decreased, highly-decreased and absent sensation to touch, respectively. In addition, neuropathy (monofilament) was a moderately important predictor (importance level 0.52) of grouping with 26.2% of participants with neuropathy in group 1 versus 73.5% of participants with neuropathy in group 2. Ulceration during follow up was almost fivefold higher in group 2 versus group 1., Conclusions: Impaired sensations to temperature, vibration and touch were shown to be the strongest factors in stratifying patients into two groups with one group having almost 5-fold risk of future foot ulceration compared to the other., (© 2024 The Authors. This review is an update of a previous systematic review and assesses the evidence for the association of work-related physical and psychosocial risk factors and specific disorders of the shoulders. Medline, Embase, Web of Science Core Collection, Cochrane Central and PsycINFO were searched and study eligibility and risk of bias assessment was performed by two independent reviewers. A total of 14 new articles were added with the majority focusing on rotator cuff syndrome (RCS) with seven studies. Nine articles reported psychosocial exposures in addition to physical exposures. The strongest evidence was found for the association between elevation, repetition, force and vibration and the occurrence of SIS and tendinosis/tendonitis. Evidence also suggests that psychosocial exposures are associated with the occurrence of RCS and tendinosis/tendonitis. Whole-body vibration (WBV) is prevalent in labour-related activities and can have adverse effects on the health and performance of the individuals exposed. However, evidence regarding the extent to which human functionality is affected following occupational WBV exposure has not been collated. The current systematic review sought to synthesize existing literature and assess the strength and direction of evidence regarding the acute after-effects of occupational WBV exposure on cognition, visual function, postural stability, and motor control. We conducted a comprehensive search of AMED, CINAHL, MEDLINE, PubMED, Psychology and Behavioural Sciences Collection, SPORTDiscus, APA PsychInfo, Cochrane Library, EMBASE, HMIC, Global Health, ProQuest Central, Scopus, Web of Science, and the US National Technical Information Service on April 26, 2023. Studies that quantified vibration exposure and measured acute changes in cognition, visual function, postural stability, and motor control from baseline to post-vibration were considered without date restriction. Out of the 2663 studies identified, 32 were eligible for inclusion. Based on the Risk of Bias in Non-Randomized Studies of Exposure (ROBINS-E) tool, the studies demonstrated low (66%), moderate (25%) and high risk of bias (9%). The findings indicate that after exposure to WBV, postural stability either deteriorates or remains unchanged. Inconsistent effects of WBV on cognition were reported, while visual function and motor control showed no pronounced changes following WBV. This might be attributed to assessment limitations such as learning effects in neuropsychological and motor tasks, and non-functional measures of vision employed. There was a lack of consistency in the characterization of vibration exposure and the assessment of associated effects on functional performance. Current evidence is therefore insufficient to provide definitive guidance for updating occupational health and safety regulations regarding WBV. However, this review highlights the potential for WBV to jeopardize post-exposure human performance and, consequently, safety. This study was designed to study dual risk of MWFs and vibration according to exposure simulation of selected industry. Air samples of two types MWFs were evaluated according to NIOSH 5026. Vibration acceleration exposure was assessed based on the ISO 8041:2005 standard. Cell treatment of both MWF air samples and vibration as the same as dual exposure to MWF airborne and vibration was assessed. There is a potency of nitrosamine formation in airborne samples of ethylamine containing MWF, while heterocyclic including bore is found in airborne bore containing MWF. DNA breaks caused by boron-containing MWF were higher than nitrosamine air samples. Oxidative stress production and chronic inflammation were highlighted in the response to cell treatments. The risk of cell toxicity in machining workers was evaluated at a level lower than the occupational exposure limit for MWFs and vibration.

Workers who use handheld vibrating machines such as grinders, hammers and chainsaws expose themselves to hand-arm vibration (HAV). Exposure to HAV may cause injuries to both the neurological and the vascular system. The occupational health services (OHS) in Sweden use a formal guideline for secondary prevention focusing on early detection of vibration-related injuries. The guide includes several screening tools, such as a screening questionnaire, clinical examinations, and laboratory tests. There are no studies, to our knowledge, on the diagnostic value of the separate items on symptoms in the screening questionnaire in relation to the laboratory tests or the clinical examinations performed during a medical examination among patients exposed to HAV. Furthermore, the recently presented ISO standard for HAV measurements (ISO/TR 18,750) has only been tested for vascular injuries and not neurological injuries. This research roadmap aims to evaluate separate items in a screening questionnaire on neurological symptoms in relation to laboratory and clinical tests among HAV exposed workers in the Arctic region of Northern Sweden. It also covers a comparison of the dose-response of the current ISO 5349-1 measurement standard and the new suggested standard ISO/TR 18,750 with the neurosensory outcomes. This manuscript describes the study rationale, design, methods, and significance.

The literature on Raynaud's phenomenon (RP) in the feet is scarce, especially in the occupational setting. The primary aim of our study was to investigate the occurrence of RP in the feet of miners. As part of the MineHealth project, written surveys and clinical examinations were completed by 260 Arctic open-pit miners working in northern Sweden and Norway (participation rate 53.6%). Data on RP were collected using standardised colour charts and questionnaire items. Clinical examination included assessing the perception of vibration and pain in both feet. There were eight women and three men who reported RP in the feet. Four also had RP in their hands but none acknowledged any first-degree relatives with the condition. Nine reported exposure to foot-transmitted vibration and one to hand-arm vibration. Seven showed signs of neurosensory injury in the feet. To conclude, the occurrence of RP in the feet of miners was 4.4%. Most cases with RP in the feet did not report the condition in the hands and were exposed to vibration transmitted directly to the feet. There were no reports of a hereditary component. Most cases with RP in the feet also had clinical findings suggestive of peripheral neuropathy in the feet.

The working conditions of heavy-duty trucks are very complicated as the diesel shaking and resonance problems, which causes weld tears, separators to fall off, and other failures occur. Through experiments and finite element simulation, the natural frequency and vibration mode of a given 400 L diesel tank were calculated to study the influences of structural parameters such as the fill ratio (0.1-0.9), the number of baffle plates (0, 1, 2), the spacing of the plates (240 mm, 400 mm, 560 mm) and the aperture (38 mm, 78 mm, 118 mm) on the modal parameters with the wet mode method. The results of the hammering mode test and the simulation modal analysis agree well with the maximum error is 4.8%; the natural frequency of the diesel tank will increase with fill ratio decrease; the increase of the baffle plate number (0, 1, 2) can effectively increase the first-order natural frequency of the diesel tank, but the change of the natural frequency is not obvious on the higher order; the higher plates spacing has a smaller natural frequency; increasing the aperture will highly increase the natural frequency, 188 mm has better vibration safety., Competing Interests: The authors have declared that no competing interests exist., (Copyright: © 2024 Hu et al. Objectives: The occurrence of hand and forearm disorders related to vibration exposure, adjusted for relevant background factors, is scarcely reported. We analysed the prevalence of such conditions in a large population cohort, stratified by sex, and associations with exposure to vibrating hand-held tools., Design: This is a retrospective cohort study., Setting: Individuals in the Malmö Diet and Cancer Study cohort (MDCS; inclusion 1991-1996; followed until 2018) were asked, 'does your work involve working with vibrating hand-held tools?' (response: 'not at all', 'some' and 'much'). Data were cross-linked with national registers to identify treatment for carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS), ulnar nerve entrapment (UNE), Dupuytren's disease, trigger finger or first carpometacarpal joint (CMC-1) osteoarthritis (OA). Cox regression models, unadjusted and adjusted (age, sex, prevalent diabetes, smoking, hypertension and alcohol consumption), were performed to analyse the effects of reported vibration exposure., Participants: Individuals in the MDCS who had answered the questionnaire on vibration exposure (14 342 out of the originally 30 446 individuals in MDCS) were included in the study., Results: In total, 12 220/14 342 individuals (76%) reported 'no' exposure, 1392/14 342 (9%) 'some' and 730/14 342 (5%) 'much' exposure to vibrating hand-held tools. In men, 'much' exposure was independently associated with CTS (HR 1.71 (95% CI 1.11 to 2.62)) and UNE (HR 2.42 (95% CI 1.15 to 5.07)). 'Some' exposure was independently associated with UNE in men (HR 2.10 (95% CI 1.12 to 3.95)). 'Much' exposure was independently associated with trigger finger in women (HR 2.73 (95% CI 1.49 to 4.99)). We found no effect of vibration exposure on Dupuytren's disease or CMC-1 OA. 'Much' vibration exposure predicted any hand and forearm diagnosis in men (HR 1.44 (95% CI 1.08 to 1.80)), but not in women., Conclusions: Vibration exposure by hand-held tools increases the risk of developing CTS and UNE and any common hand and forearm conditions in men, whereas women only risk trigger finger and CMC-1 OA. While mechanical vibration lessens discomfort associated with injection site pain (ISP), many local anesthetic injectors (LAIs) do not use vibratory anesthetic devices (VADs). Injector preference of vibration device is influenced by functional concerns, but qualitatively there is an element of adoption that is driven by visual feedback. We sought to capture operator preferences of vibration device design elements to further understand why injectors do not use these devices. We conducted a survey of image preferences among nurses and medical assistants employed at 8 dermatological clinics to investigate barriers to VAD use. Images were electronically modified with features distinct from the original device (a VAD commonly used in clinical practice). Participants rated their likelihood and comfort of use of each VAD represented in the images. Two-sample t-tests were used to compare the rating of the unmodified VAD to each modified VAD within participants. A response rate of 100% was achieved with 35 participants (average age, 38.5 years; 6 (17.1%) male, 29 (82.9%) female). Despite 28 (80%) participants knowing that mechanical vibration reduces ISP, only 16 (45.7%) endorsed ever using mechanical vibration as topical anesthetic. Images modified by pattern, color, and sterility covering were rated significantly lower than the original, unmodified VAD image (plain white VAD), confirming that visual feedback does impact adoption. Through independent comment categorization, aesthetics were found to be important to LAIs. Aesthetic preferences opposing functional concerns may factor into the lack of VAD use. Defining these visual preference barriers to adoption may help promote VAD use during dermatologic procedures., (© 2024. Objective: Local vibration can cause microcirculatory abnormalities such as blood stasis and symmetrical intermittent digital artery vasospasm. Finger SBP (FSBP) measurement is a potential way of assessing vascular components. This study aims to comprehensively investigate the relationship between the occurrence of the vibration-induced white finger (VWF) and changes in FSBP and then set the application value of FSBP measurements in the early diagnosis of VWF., Methods: All samples were judgmental sampling from one factory. Totally 50 patients with VWF were the case group, while 50 without occupational hand-transmitted vibration exposure were the control group. FSBP measurements and epidemiological feature investigations were taken., Results: There were significant reductions in FSBP level and %FSBP index at both 10 °C and 30 °C in fingers reported VWF ( P  < 0.05). The %FSBP abnormal rate of the index, ring and little finger in the VWF group was higher than the control (44.00% vs. 18.00%, 78.00% vs. 26.00%, 64.00% vs. 8.00%). The %FSBP of the ring and little finger had a relatively high application value (area under curve = 0.902, 0.737), while their standard regression coefficients were -0.23 and -0.412. The diagnostic cutoff value of the ring finger was 77.60%, while the sensitivity and specificity were 86.67%., Conclusion: FSBP measurements were proven helpful in monitoring and diagnosing VWF prospectively and proved to have great application value in our study. %FSBP of the ring finger was the appropriate diagnostic index in FSBP measurements, while its abnormal value could be set as 80.00%., (Copyright © 2024 The Author(s). Podologists are exposed to many occupational hazards, including volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from insole manufacturing and noise/vibration during nail or tissue grinding. In this study, VOCs, noise, and vibration were measured in five podiatry clinics and three offices. Questionnaires were administered to 23 podologists and 19 office workers to inquire about their pain, ocular, skin and respiratory complaints. The results showed that the podologists' exposure to the total VOC concentrations was approximately twice as high as that of the office workers. The podologists' complaints regarding pain were found to be correlated with ambient noise and hand-arm vibration levels. Ocular, skin, and respiratory complaints were also found to be correlated with total VOC concentrations. These results suggest that VOCs, noise and vibration in the working environment may impair podologists' health and that they have an intensifying effect on each other, increasing the severity of health issues.

Sixteen standing male participants were subjected to fore-and-aft sinusoidal vibration with peak magnitude and frequency in the range 0.44-4.431 ms -2 and 2-6 Hz, respectively. The fore-and-aft, lateral and vertical transmissibilities to the first dorsal vertebra (T1), eighth dorsal vertebra (T8), twelfth dorsal vertebra (T12), fourth lumbar vertebra (L4) and head were measured. Large inter-participant variability was observed in the transmissibilities at all locations. Nevertheless, peaks in the range 3-4.5 Hz were identified at all locations, implying a whole-body resonance in this frequency range. The response was found dominant in the mid-sagittal plane as the lateral transmissibility showed low values. Below 4.5 Hz, the fore-and-aft transmissibility increased with moving from caudal to cranial locations of the upper body. However, at higher frequencies, the opposite trend was observed. The results can be used for developing models that may help understand how vibration affects health and comfort.

Intrafacility transport of mice is an essential function for both laboratory and husbandry personnel. However, transport may induce a stress response that can alter research findings and negatively impact animal welfare. To determine minimally adverse intrafacility transport methods, in-cage noise and vibration exposure during transport on a variety of transport vehicles (hand carrying, stainless steel rack, flatbed cart, metal teacart, plastic teacart, and a cart with pneumatic wheels) were measured. Under-cage and in-cage padding was tested for its ability to decrease noise and vibration on each vehicle. Behavioral (open field test and elevated plus maze) and corticosterone responses of mice were then measured following transport on the most adverse (metal teacart) and least adverse (pneumatic cart) methods of multicage transport. Behavioral measures showed no difference between transported mice and untransported mice in both single- and group-housed settings. Plasma corticosterone was significantly elevated in mice transported on the metal teacart immediately following transport and continued to have elevated trends in circadian peaks during the 48h of sampling. The cart with pneumatic wheels was most effective at reducing noise and vibration, reflected in posttransport corticosterone readings that remained equivalent to those in untransported mice. This study demonstrates that mitigation of noise and vibration during cart transport may decrease the impact of transport on certain stress parameters in mice.

Vehicular whole-body vibration (WBV) can have long-term adverse effects on human quality of life. Animal models can be used to study pathophysiologic effects of vibration. The goal of this study was to assess animal cooperation and well-being to determine the feasibility of a novel seated rat model for investigating the effects of WBV on biologic systems. Twenty-four male Sprague???Dawley rats were used. The experiment consisted of an acclimation phase, 2 training phases (TrP1 and TrP2), and a testing phase (TeP), including weekly radiographic imaging. During acclimation, rats were housed in pairs in standard cages without vibration. First, experimental (EG; n = 18) and control group 1 (C1; n = 3) rats were placed in a vibration apparatus without vibration, with increasing duration over 5 d during TrP1. EG rats were exposed to vertical random WBV that was increased in magnitude over 5 d during TrP2 until reaching the vibration signal used during TeP (15min, 0.7m??s-2 root mean square, unweighted). C1 rats were placed in the vibration apparatus but received no vibration during any phase. Control group 2 (C2; n = 3) rats remained in the home cages. Cooperation was evaluated with regard to rat-apparatus interactions and position compliance. Behavior, weight, and fecal glucocorticoid metabolite concentrations (fGCM) were used to evaluate animal well-being. We observed good cooperation and no behavioral patterns or weight loss between phases, indicating little or no animal stress. The differences in fGCM concentration between groups indicated that the EG rats had lower stress levels than the control rats in all phases except TrP1. Thus, this model elicited little or no stress in the conscious, unrestrained, seated rats.

In the mining industry, dumper operators are exposed to combined noise and vibration, leading to discomfort. Dumpers are heavy earth-moving machines that are used for carrying bulky material in mining industries. Dumper operators are exposed to physical hazards such as vibration, noise, heat, and humidity, throughout their lifetime of work. Fifty-four dumper operators working in mines were selected for this study. Noise was measured as per the guidelines of the Directorate General Mining Safety, India, and whole-body vibration was measured as per the guidelines of ISO 2631-1::1997. Noise Pro DLX, Type 2 noise dosimeters were used for the measurement of personal noise exposure while SV-106 six channels vibration meters were used for whole body vibration (WBV) exposure measurement. Discomfort was calculated using the regression equation developed by Huang and Griffin (2014). The total discomfort level of mine operators was about 192. A predictive equation was derived by using a regression model to determine the contribution of individual variables causing discomfort. It was observed that for every unit increase in noise (LAeq), discomfort increased by 10.20 units, a one-unit increase in vibration (A (8)) led to a 51.7-unit increase in discomfort, while an increase of one unit of exposure time increased the discomfort level by 5.24 units.

Objective: Patients and health care providers experience varying degrees of vibration during interfacility ground transport. The impact of vibration on term and preterm neonates may result in physiologic instability and increased risk of intracranial hemorrhage, whereas the impact on health care providers has been shown to include an increase in perceived and physiologic stress levels and may contribute to chronic back and neck pain. This study aimed to evaluate 3 common ambulance suspension systems and the corresponding vibratory impact produced during typical interfacility driving conditions on adult caregiver and neonatal patient mannequins., Methods: Type 3 ambulances with air, liquid, and traditional suspensions were evaluated using various driving tests to simulate typical road conditions. Vibrations were measured using triaxial accelerometers placed on the chassis, upon the head of a seated caregiver mannequin in the ambulance bench seat, and the head of a neonatal mannequin supine and secured in an isolette. Data analysis included the average vibration frequency, root mean square values, and maximum vibration amplitudes., Results: The results showed that the supine neonatal mannequin experienced the highest vibration frequency and amplitude in the vertical (x) direction, whereas the adult caregiver mannequin experienced higher vibration frequencies in both parallel (y) and lateral (z) directions and the highest vibration amplitude in the y direction. The liquid suspension system consistently demonstrated the lowest vibration levels in all driving conditions and directions, whereas traditional suspension had the highest values., Conclusion: This study provides important insights into the vibrations incurred by simulated neonatal patients and health care providers during ambulance transport. The directional vibration frequency and amplitude differ between a neonatal mannequin and an adult mannequin when placed in typical positions with typical restraints during varied ambulance driving conditions. In all directional movements and driving conditions, a liquid suspension system decreases vibration frequency and amplitude more than air or traditional systems. Objectives. Studies related to a systematic approach for intervention design to reduce whole-body vibration (WBV) exposure are scarce. This study presents a systematic approach to identifying, selecting and prioritizing safety interventions to fulfill that research gap. Methods. A total of 130 vibration readings for dumper operators were taken from two surface iron ore mines to identify significant determinants of WBV exposure. Initially, age, weight, seat design, awkward posture, machine's age, load tonnage, dumper speed and haul road condition were hypothesized as determinants. Data were collected through standardized questionnaires and field-based observation. A multivariate statistical approach was applied for the practical use of the intervention program. Results. As some of the hypothesized factors were correlated, exploratory factor analysis (EFA) followed by multiple linear regression (MLR) was used to investigate their association with WBV exposure. As per EFA results, hypothesized factors were clubbed under individual, ergonomics and occupational factors. Occupational and ergonomics factors were found to be significantly associated with WBV exposure through MLR and used to form safety interventions to reduce WBV exposure. Conclusions. Our methodological approach is original in the occupational health research area and can be helpful to tailor the safety interventions for the unit level with minimum effort.

Objective. To quantify the exposure-response relationship between hand-arm vibration exposure and the risk of musculoskeletal disorders of the upper extremities (UMSDs), a case-control study was carried out among workers in the construction, mining, metal and woodworking industries. Methods . In total, 209 male cases and 614 controls were recruited. Cases were newly reported patients with UMSDs. Controls were a random sample of persons with compensable occupational injuries. Standardized personal interviews were performed among cases and controls by well-trained safety engineers. In addition to leisure activities and comorbidities, work histories of all participants were collected in detail. To quantify hand-arm vibration exposures, a database of vibration measurements of over 700 power tools was used. This database allows the detailed quantification of vibration exposures over time. A dose-response relationship between hand-arm vibration exposure and UMSDs was quantified by conditional logistic regression analyses. Results and conclusions . After adjusting for relevant confounders, statistically significant exposure-response relationships between cumulative hand-arm vibration exposure and UMSDs were established. A cumulative hand-arm vibration exposure of D hv (vibration total value in three measuring directions) = 142,300 (95% confidence interval [CI] [90,600-333,200]) m 2 /s 4 ·day or D hw (vibration value in the direction along the forearm) = 38,700 (95% CI [25,400-80,900]) m 2 /s 4 ·day is associated with a doubled risk of UMSDs.

This paper investigated the discomfort caused by vertical whole-body vibration (WBV) over 20 minutes using data recorded at the front, middle, and rear seats of the passenger cabin in civil aviation during a cruising flight. Twenty-four subjects experienced each stimulus at 0.5 ms -2 r.m.s. and judged discomfort at various moments (i.e. 1/6, 5, 10, 15, and 20 min) using a category-ratio method. The difference in discomfort due to high-frequency vibration components vanished after 10 min. Based on Stevens' power law, a method is developed to estimate long-term vertical WBV discomfort by considering the static discomfort and an interaction coefficient between vibration and static discomfort as parameters. The proposed estimation method showed high accuracy with determination coefficients ( R 2 ) higher than 0.97 and good linearity with values of growth rates 0.95, 1, and 0.95 for the vertical WBV discomfort at the front, middle, and rear seat positions in the aircraft cabin. Practitioner summary: An estimation method for the discomfort caused by vertical WBV considering the duration and static sitting discomfort is developed. This method can provide accurate discomfort estimating for long-term vibration exposure, e.g. in civil aviation during a cruising flight, by introducing an 'interaction term' between static and dynamic discomfort.

Vibration is inherent in research animal facilities due to the mechanical systems and practices required for animal care and use. Ample evidence indicates that vibration can change behavior and physiology in multiple species, potentially altering the results of research studies. Although one cannot eliminate environmental vibration, its control is important in research animal environments to decrease the possibility of introducing a research variable due to vibration effects. To assess the potential for a vibration source to alter experimental results and variability, one must understand the principles of vibration, its likely sources, and control methods. The literature regarding the effects of vibration, as it applies in a practical sense, can be challenging to interpret because the vibration frequencies tested to date have often not been within or near the most sensitive ranges of the species being tested. Some previous studies have used unrealistic vibration magnitudes and provided insufficient detail to duplicate or build upon conclusions. Standardization is essential for research examining the effects of vibration on animals to validate knowledge of this extrinsic variable in animal research and identify ways to mitigate the variable in research facilities.

This is the first known case report of COVID-19-related Raynaud's phenomenon (RP) identified at routine health surveillance of a male exposed to hand-transmitted vibration. The temporal relationship with COVID infection followed the course previously reported, being a late feature associated with mild COVID, and followed by gradual spontaneous recovery. It is not known whether the RP, in this case, is solely due to COVID or represents a summative effect of COVID and vibration exposure. A prudent approach is recommended in such circumstances with limitation of vibration exposure and continuing frequent surveillance pending improvement of the RP, with further prompt investigation if the expected recovery does not occur., (© The Author(s) 2023. Studies have shown that certain vocal fold pathologies are more common in one sex than the other. This is often explained by differences in the composition of the lamina propria and anatomical differences between female and male vocal folds, resulting in e.g. different fundamental frequencies. Here, we investigated a potential sex-specific voice frequency effect in an in vitro setting using vocal fold fibroblasts from one male and one female donor with and without cigarette smoke extract (CSE) addition. After exposure to either male or female vibration frequency with or without CSE, cells and supernatants were harvested. Gene and protein analysis were performed by means of qPCR, western blot, ELISA and Luminex. We found that exposure of cells to both male and female vibration pattern did not elicit significant changes in the expression of extracellular matrix-, inflammation-, and fibrosis-related genes, compared to control cells. The addition of CSE to vibration downregulated the gene expression of COL1A1 in cells exposed to the female vibration pattern, as well as induced MMP1 and PTGS2 in cells exposed to both female and male vibration pattern. The protein expression of MMP1 and COX2 was found to be significantly upregulated only in cells exposed to CSE and female vibration pattern. To conclude, different vibration patterns alone did not cause different responses of the cells. This study compared the relative performance of alternative frequency weightings of hand-transmitted vibration (HTV) to predict the extent of cold-induced vasoconstriction in the digital arteries of HTV workers. The cold response of digital arteries was related to measures of daily vibration exposure expressed in terms of r.m.s. acceleration magnitude normalised to an 8-h day, frequency weighted according to either the frequency weighting W h defined in international standard ISO 5349-1:2001 (A h (8) in ms -2 r.m.s.) or the hand-arm vascular frequency weighting W p proposed in the ISO Technical Report 18570:2007 (A p (8) in ms -2 r.m.s.). The measure of daily vibration exposure constructed with the frequency weighting W p (A p (8)) was a better predictor of the cold response of the digital arteries in the HTV workers than the metric derived from the conventional ISO frequency weighting W h (A h (8)). This finding suggests that a measure of daily vibration exposure constructed with the vascular weighting W p , which gives more weight to intermediate- and high-frequency vibration (31.5-250 Hz), performed better for the prediction of cold induced digital arterial hyperresponsiveness than that obtained with the frequency weighting W h recommended in ISO 5349-1 which gives more importance to lower frequency vibration (≤16 Hz).

Objective: This study described the effects of applied force (grip) on vascular and sensorineural function in an animal model of hand-arm vibration syndrome (HAVS)., Methods: Rat tails were exposed to 0, 2, or 4 N of applied force 4 hr/d for 10 days. Blood flow and sensitivity to transcutaneous electrical stimulation and pressure were measured., Results: Applied force increased blood flow but reduced measures of arterial plasticity. Animals exposed to force tended to be more sensitive to 250-Hz electrical stimulation and pressure applied to the tail., Conclusions: Effects of applied force on blood flow and sensation are different than those of vibration. The primary aim of this study was to determine if occupational exposure to whole-body vibration (WBV) was associated with reporting neck pain. A cross-sectional study was conducted on a sample of the general population living in northern Sweden, aged 24-76 years. Data was retrieved through a digital survey that collected subjectively reported information on exposure to WBV and biomechanical exposures as well as neck pain. The study included 5,017 participants (response rate 44%). Neck pain was reported by 269 men (11.8%) and 536 women (20.2%). There was a statistically significant association between reporting occupational exposure to WBV half the time or more (adjusted OR 1.91; 95% CI 1.22-3.00) and reporting neck pain. In gender-stratified analyses, the same pattern was observed in men, while there were too few women to determine any association. We conclude that occupational exposure to whole-body vibration was associated with neck pain in men. Practitioner summary: This cross-sectional, survey-based study investigated associations between self-reported occupational whole-body vibration and neck pain. It showed significant associations between frequent exposure to whole-body vibration and neck pain among men but not women. In occupational health care settings, whole-body vibration could be considered as a possible risk factor for neck pain.

The risk management in workplace is an important measure to effectively prevent and control the harm of hand-transmitted vibration. Based on the relevant developments at home and abroad, this paper expounds the risk of manual vibration operation in workplace by taking contact assessment and hazard assessment as an example. On this basis, the limit management and hierarchical management related to risk management are discussed, and the existing problems are analyzed.

Vibration white finger is a form of secondary Raynaud's phenomenon (RP) caused by the use of handheld vibrating tools. RP usually appears on the extremities of the fingers, and its borders are well recognised. No reports have been published on 'mottled' RP in continuous observation from the onset to the disappearance of RP. A man in his 60s who had been using vibrating tools such as jackhammers and tampers for 30 years presented with sensations of coldness, burning and numbness. Whole-body cold exposure was performed outdoors in winter, and RP was photographed continuously. 'Mottled' RP can be defined as triphasic colour changes: white, blue and red. The patient was taken off work, kept warm and medicated. His symptoms improved slightly after 10 years of follow-up, but the RP did not disappear. Background: Vibration is one of the harmful factors for forklift drivers. The use of non- standard seats and not paying attention to how the seats are maintained can be affected by the amount of vibration transmitted to the person., Objective: This study investigates the amount of vibration transmitted from the forklift and the effect of different types of polyurethane foam in reducing the vibration transmitted from the forklift seat., Methods: This descriptive-analytical study was performed on 38 forklifts in 4 diesel models with the same weight class. The amount of vibration transmitted from forklift seats according to ISO2631 standard, taking into account the effect of various factors such as foam type (hot and cold), thickness (6-12 cm), load and year Function was measured. The amount of vibration caused by the forklift on the seat and under the seat was evaluated using ISO7096 standard., Results: The average total vibration of the whole body in all foams in no-load mode is more than with load. The transmission vibration of cold polyurethane foam is less than that of hot polyurethane foam. With increasing thickness, the efficiency of cold polyurethane foam increases by 12 cm and in the loaded state 40.63% and in the unloaded state 49.58% in reducing the vibration transmitted to drivers., Conclusion: The results of this study show that cold foam has better effectiveness and efficiency than hot polyurethane foam. Also, the thicker the foam, the less vibration is transmitted to the driver.

Background: This study focuses on evaluating the exposure to whole-body vibration (WBV) and association of musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) with various risk factors among dumper operators in the mining industry. Despite the issue's significance, prior research has been limited., Objective: The study introduces a novel fuzzy-based approach for identifying, selecting, and prioritizing safety measures to mitigate MSD risks., Methods: Data collection comprised face-to-face interviews, anthropometric measurements, Rapid Upper Limb Assessment (RULA) scoring for posture assessment, and the Nordic Musculoskeletal questionnaire for assessment of MSD prevalence. Multiple linear and logistic regression models were used to analyse the contributing risk factors to MSDs and WBV exposure. These risk factors formed the basis for a practical approach to select appropriate safety measures based on fuzzy based aggregation method of expert's judgment aimed at mitigating the risk of MSDs., Results: The results revealed that the risk factors such as poor work posture, WBV exposure and poor seat design were significantly associated with neck (adjusted odds ratio aOR = 4.81), upper limb and shoulder (aOR = 3.28), upper back (aOR = 5.09), and lower back pain (aOR = 3.67) at p < 0.05. Using these factors to formulate safety measures to reduce MSD risk, the minimization of sharp turns and abrupt changes in elevation in designing the haul roads, scheduled maintenance practices, and ergonomic seat design were found as important safety measures in this study., Conclusion: Our unique methodological approach in occupational health research could be highly beneficial for tailoring safety measures at the unit level with minimal effort.

Background: Occupational foot-transmitted vibration (FTV) exposure is common in industries like mining, construction, and agriculture, often leading to acute and chronic injuries. Vibration assessments require technical expertise and equipment which can be costly for employers to perform. Alternatively, researchers have observed that self-reported discomfort can be used as an effective indicator of injury risk., Objective: This study aimed to investigate the effect of standing FTV exposure on self-reported ratings of discomfort, and whether these subjective ratings differed by body area and exposure frequency., Methods: Participants (n = 30) were randomly exposed to standing FTV at six frequencies (25, 30, 35, 40, 45, and 50 Hz) for 20-45 seconds. Following each exposure, participants rated discomfort on a scale of 0-9 in four body areas: head and neck (HN), upper body (UB), lower body (LB), and total body., Results: Results indicated that participants experienced the most discomfort in the LB at higher frequencies (p < 0.001), consistent with the resonance of foot structures. The HN discomfort tended to decrease as the exposure frequency increased, although not statistically significant (p > 0.0167). The UB discomfort remained relatively low across all frequencies., Conclusions: The study suggests a potential connection between resonant frequencies and discomfort, potentially indicating injury risk. Although self-reported discomfort is insufficient for directly assessing injury risk from FTV, it provides a simple method for monitoring potential musculoskeletal risks related to vibration exposure at resonant frequencies. While professional vibration assessment remains necessary, self-reported discomfort may act as an early indicated of vibration-induced injuries, aiding in implementing mitigation strategies.

Introduction: Mastitis is one of the most important factor diseases in dairy cattle worldwide. Milking technique represents one of the factors involved in the development of mastitis. The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of vibrations during milking on the rate of clinical and subclinical mastitis. For this purpose, milking measurements, tank milk analyses and survey forms (general farm data, assessment of milking work and milking hygiene, teat condition, feeding, farm problems, animal behavior) were assessed in 8 Swiss dairy farms. The results show a correlation between present vibrations at the output of the milk meter and increasing bulk milk somatic cell count. Further, a tendency was shown for vibrations at the input of the milk meter to influence bulk milk somatic cell count. Also, a tendency regarding vibrations at the outlet of the milk meter and acute phase protein milk amyloid A was evident. In conclusion, the results suggest that vibration during milking might have a negative effect on udder health. However, further research with a larger number of dairies is needed to make a more generally valid statement.

Driver drowsiness is a factor in at least 20% of serious motor vehicle accidents. Although research has shown that Whole-Body Vibration (WBV) can induce drowsiness in drivers, it is unknown whether particular frequencies are more problematic. The present study systematically investigated the influence of WBV frequency on driver drowsiness. Fifteen participants each undertook six 1-h sessions of simulated driving while being subjected to WBV of either 0 Hz (no vibration), 1-4 Hz, 4-8 Hz, 8-16 Hz, 16-32 Hz or 32-64 Hz. Subjective sleepiness, as measured by the Karolinska Sleepiness Scale (KSS), confirmed that drivers felt drowsier when exposed to the two lowest frequency ranges (1-4 Hz and 4-8 Hz). Reaction time, which measures attention and alertness, was significantly impaired by the two lowest frequency ranges. Objective driving performance measures (Standard Deviation of Lane Position (SDLP), Standard Deviation of (SD) Steering Angle, Time in Unsafe Zone) also showed significant degradation due to exposure to the two lowest frequency ranges. Exposure to 1-4 Hz or 4-8 Hz vibration caused attention to become significantly impaired within 15-20 min and driving performance to be significantly impaired by 30-35 min. The other frequency ranges had little or no effect. Background: Sustained exposure to high-level hand-transmitted vibrations may result in angioneurotic disorders, which partly originate from vibration-altered hemodynamics in the finger arteries when repeating these disturbances throughout working life. Hence, the aim of this study is to assess the most relevant hemodynamic descriptors in the digital arteries, determine the relationship between the latter and vibration features, and gain better understanding of the physiological mechanisms involved., Methods: An experimental setup, mainly comprised of an ultra-high frequency ultrasound scanner and a vibration shaker, was used to image the digital proper volar arteries of the forefinger. Raw ultrasound data were post-processed by custom-made numerical routines to supply a pulsatile fluid mechanics model for computing the hemodynamic descriptors. Twenty-four healthy volunteers participated in the measurement campaign. Classical statistical methods were then applied to the dataset and also the wavelet transform for calculating the signal power in the frequency bands matching cardiac, respiratory, myogenic and neurogenic activities., Results: The artery diameter, the wall shear stress - WSS - and the WSS temporal gradient - WSSTG - were found to be the most relevant descriptors. Vibration-induced WSS was divided by three compared to its basal value whatever the vibration frequency and it was proportional to log 2 of the acceleration level. Marked increases in WSSTG when stopping vibration might also lead to adverse health effects. Background: Construction workers are exposed to hand-transmitted vibration (HTV) and/or noise caused by vibrating hand tools in the work environment., Objective: The present study aims to investigate the effects of exposure to HTV and/or noise on workers' hearing loss and body balance., Methods: Forty construction workers were exposed to HTV (10 m/s2 rms, 31.5 Hz) and/or typical construction noise (90 dBA) in three simulated experiment scenarios with the vibrating hand-held tool for 30 minutes over three days. The hearing loss from 1000 to 6000 Hz and the body balance were determined before and after each exposure scenario., Results: Separate noise exposure at all frequencies except for 1000 Hz could significantly affect hearing threshold levels (p-value<0.05). Separate exposure to HTV cannot lead to a remarkable effect on hearing loss (p-value>0.05); however, it can synergistically increase the effect of noise on hearing loss. Also, the affected frequency range in concurrent exposure has been greater than in separate noise exposure. The separate effects of exposure to HTV and noise on the subjects' body balance were not statistically significant (p-value>0.05); however, these effects became significant in concurrent exposure (p-value<0.05). Based on the estimated effect sizes, noise could synergistically increase the observed effect of HTV on body balance., Conclusion: There is a synergistic interaction between HTV and noise on hearing loss and body balance. It seems necessary to pay attention to the risk evaluation of simultaneous exposure to noise and HTV when setting the occupational action limit values.

Objectives: Purposes of this study are to study the changes in expression of vascular regulators after vibration exposure and during the onset of vibration-induced white finger (VWF) and to screen for vascular regulatory factors that could be used as early biomarkers of HAVS., Methods: Using judgmental sampling from a Chinese factory, workers with VWF and hand-transmitted vibration exposure but without VWF were selected for research. Vibration contributes large increases in railway passenger discomfort during long-term sitting. Discomfort caused by vibration may differ in different operation conditions. This paper conducted field measurements to investigate the interrelationships between the three. Participants completed a 240-min train journey with their whole-body vibration, subjective comfort ratings and train operating parameters being recorded. A large correlation was observed between the estimated vibration dose value and subjective comfort. The relationship that vibration magnitude significantly increases with increasing the train speed and tunnel density was also found and quantified. A vibration exposure limit of 2.08 m/s 1.75 corresponding to the boundary between subjective ratings of comfortable and discomfortable was obtained. Based on the exposure limit and the quantified relationship, a vibration comfort prediction method that can calculate the passenger's maximum tolerance time under a given operation condition was proposed and may help in determining the optimal operating speed and tunnels distribution to alleviate vibration discomfort. Practitioner summary: Similar to the guide to effect of vibration on health in current standard, a vibration exposure limit regarding comfort was provided for reference when assessing long-term vibration comfort. Meanwhile, a prediction method was proposed for determining the best train operating speed and tunnels distribution, thereby alleviating railway passengers' vibration discomfort.

Biodynamic modelling of seat-occupant systems can assist in seat comfort design. A finite element (FE) model of the seated human body, including detailed modelling of the lumbar spine, was established to reflect the human response to vibration and biodynamic response of the lumbar spine under whole-body vibration (WBV). The lumbar spine model was established and validated against the in-vitro results and calculated data. The posture of the lumbar spine was adjusted according to the radiological research results, and the adjusted model was combined to establish a FE model of the seated human body. The present seated human model with backrest inclination angles of 10, 20, and 30°, validated by comparing the measured apparent mass and seat-to-lumbar spine transmissibility, was used to calculate the biodynamic response of the lumbar spine with three inclined backrests under WBV. The results showed that the model could characterise the apparent mass, seat-to-lumbar spine transmissibility, and the biodynamic response of the lumbar spine. Practitioner summary: Biodynamic models can represent dynamic characteristics of the human body exposed to vibration and assist in seat comfort design. The three-dimensional FE model of the human body can be used to explore the human response to vibration and the biodynamic response of the lumbar spine under WBV.

A pooled analysis of vibration-induced white finger (VWF) in population groups of workers has been performed using the results of a published meta-analysis as source material (Nilsson T, Wahlström J, Burström L. The analyzed epidemiologic studies contain different prevalences of VWF observed after different durations of employment involving exposure to the vibration of power tools and machines. These prevalences are transformed to 10% prevalence by either linear or polynomial (i.e. "S"-shaped curvilinear) interpolation in order to compare with the exposure-response relation contained in the relevant international standard (ISO 5349-1:2001). An exposure-response relation is constructed using regression analysis for the time (in years) to reach 10% prevalence in a population group, when subjected to a daily vibration exposure calculated according to the procedures specified in the standard, A(8). Good fits to the data are obtained when polynomial and linear prevalence interpolation is used. The 95-percentile confidence intervals (CIs) of the exposure-response relation predicted by polynomial prevalence interpolation lie at somewhat larger lifetime exposures than those obtained by linear prevalence interpolation. Uncertainty in the precision of polynomial prevalence interpolation is mitigated by giving equal weight to linear interpolation when interpreting the results. When the 95-percentile CIs of the exposure-response models obtained by linear and polynomial prevalence interpolation are used to define the most probable exposure-response relation, the resulting common range of values includes the ISO exposure-response relation. It is proposed that an exposure-response relation for the onset of VWF derived from a regression analysis is specified in terms of the lower limit of its CI. Hence, when exposure measures are constructed according to the ISO standard and equal weight is given to the results of the 2 methods for interpolating prevalence described here, the ISO exposure-response relation would be considered to provide a conservative estimate for a 10% prevalence of VWF to develop in a population group, at least for A(8) > 4 m/s2. It thus remains the relation to use for assessing exposure to hand-transmitted vibration in the workplace. The effect of vibration magnitude on frequency-dependence of discomfort of human body is always overlooked with respect to the comfort equivalence contours, particularly for high-magnitude vibration in wideband frequency. In this study, the magnitude effect of vertical vibration on discomfort of human body is investigated experimentally. Nineteen male subjects are involved in the jury test of vibration discomfort in the vertical direction with 2-5 m/s 2 in magnitude up to 100 Hz. It is shown that the growth rate of discomfort may exceed 1 due to the high-magnitude vibration employed. In this condition that the rate varies around 1, the Stevens' power law is not capable to properly represent the relationship between the subjective discomfort and the vibration magnitude. It means the equivalent comfort contours are not only dependent on the frequency range but also related to the vibration magnitude. Frequency weightings of vibration discomfort are influenced by the excitation magnitude. Practitioner summary: The occupant comfort to vertical whole-body vibration is affected by vibration magnitude. This study provides the effect of vibration magnitude on frequency-dependence of discomfort to whole-body vibration. It is suggested to propose variable frequency weightings for vibration discomfort evaluation under different magnitudes to achieve better comfort design.

Background: The combined health impact of concurrent railway noise and railway vibration exposure is not yet well understood., Objectives: This systematic review gives an overview of epidemiological studies on health effects from railway vibration, aiming to quantify this association with exposure-effect curves. Moreover, the combined health effects of vibration and concurrent noise were investigated., Methods: We converted the vibration metric to an equivalent noise level and calculated an overall noise level by energetically summing the equivalent and railway noise level. The combined health effect was determined by using published evidence-based exposure-effect formulas., Results: Studies included in this systematic review predominately investigated annoyance and self-reported sleep disturbances; no studies on manifest diseases were identified. For the combined effects of vibration and noise on "total" annoyance, the results based on the pooled analysis of CargoVibes project are recommended as conservative approach., Discussion: Converting railway vibration into equivalent noise levels in dB may offer a pragmatic approach to assess the combined health effects of railway noise and railway vibration exposure. Future studies should include cardiovascular and mental diseases in addition to vibration-induced annoyance and sleep disturbances. This study aims to investigate the effect of whole-body vibration along different axes on the response time (RT) of standing subjects during a customised psychomotor vigilance task (PVT). Twenty-five subjects were exposed to harmonic vibration with amplitude of 0.7 m/s 2 RMS and frequencies between 1.5 Hz and 12.5 Hz. ANOVA was used to assess if the difference of RT with and without vibration had a statistical relevance. Results showed that the RT was statistically affected by the vibration only at frequencies below 2 Hz. The vibration at higher frequencies had a minor effect on the RT. The RTs during the vibration exposure was, on average, 15% higher than the RT post exposure. Practitioner summary: This study investigates the effects of whole-body vibration (WBV) along different axes on the response time (RT). We measured the RTs to a psychomotor vigilance task of 25 standing subject exposed to WBV. The cognitive response was statistically affected by the WBV and, on average RT have increased of 15%.

Blast-induced vibration may be harmful to facilities in the vicinity of operating mines, mainly causing structural damage and human discomfort. This study presents an application of multivariate statistics to predict vibration levels regarding their potential to cause structural damage and human discomfort. An extensive seismic monitoring campaign was executed in a large open-pit iron ore mine, near a small village, to gather a dataset for a predictive multivariate analysis. Ten blasting events have produced a dataset of 158 valid measurements. Three classes of vibration peak velocity were adopted from legal standards, which later supported a cluster analysis. Then, it was possible to compare how much these two classification modalities respond to discriminant analysis. The next step was to carry out a principal component analysis (PCA) from the original database, and, comparatively, to plot both the scores concerning the classes derived from the vibration standard and those from the groups obtained from cluster analysis. PCA has considerably explained the data variability, while the three classes from cluster analysis resulted very similar to the corresponding ones from the vibration standards. The results have demonstrated that multivariate statistics may be applied to manage blasting-induced vibration and its deleterious effects with few adjustments and automation.

The biodynamic response of 14 subjects to sinusoidal dual-axis vibration in lateral and roll directions is studied. The root mean square of human response is detected by measuring the torque at the seat pan. The effects of phase difference, magnitude, and frequency on the biodynamic responses are investigated. The consistency between human responses to dual-axis and single-axis is studied. With increasing phase difference, human response is found to reach the maximum when the vibrations are anti-phase and then decrease to the minimum when they are in-phase. Besides, the dominance of the lateral excitation is confirmed in the dual-axis vibration. Finally, the principle of equivalence between lateral-roll dual-axis vibration and roll single-axis vibration is established. With the equivalence method, the biodynamic characteristics of the human body to multi-axis vibration are expected to be measured and represented with a much simpler test and dynamic model. Practitioner summary: Proposed equivalence uses one index to evaluate the compound discomfort caused by the roll and lateral vibration. Overestimation of discomfort due by summing the effects of them calculated separately can be avoided. After the equivalence, evaluation of discomfort and modelling of the human body can be carried out only in roll direction.
