We report on the complete computation of the mixed QCD-electroweak corrections to the neutral-current Drell-Yan process. Our calculation holds in the entire range of dilepton invariant masses. We present phenomenological results for several kinematical distributions in the case of bare muons both in the resonant region and for high invariant masses. We also consider the forward-backward asymmetry, which is a key observable to measure the weak mixing angle. We finally extend our calculation to dressed leptons and compare our results in the massless limit to those available in the literature., Comment: 27 pages, 7 Figures, and 2 Tables

An optimization-based strategy is proposed for coupling three-dimensional and one-dimensional problems (3D-1D coupling) in the context of soil-root interaction simulations. This strategy, originally designed to tackle generic 3D-1D coupled problems with discontinuous solutions, is here extended to the case of non-linear problems and applied, for the first time, along with a virtual element discretization of the 3D soil sample. This further enhances the capability of the method to handle geometrical complexities, allowing to easily mesh domains characterized, for instance, by the presence of stones and other impervious obstacles of arbitrary shape. A discrete-hybrid tip-tracking strategy is adopted to model both the root growth and the evolution in time of the water flux, the pressure head and the water content, both in the roots and in the surrounding soil sample. By choosing proper rules for the generation of branches, realistic root-network configurations are obtained. Several numerical examples are proposed, proving both the accuracy of the adopted method and its applicability in realistic and large scale simulations.

Motivated by the growing interest in accessing the spin structure of multi-boson processes and in measuring quantum entanglement at high energies, we study polarisation and spin-correlation coefficients in di-boson systems. We show that higher-order corrections of QCD and electroweak type, off-shell modelling, and realistic effects such as fiducial selections and neutrino reconstruction are unavoidable to properly determine such coefficients, and consequently to provide a sound interpretation of observables sensitive to quantum entanglement and Bell-inequality violation. Our findings are based on a detailed phenomenological analysis of boson pairs at the LHC, either in inclusive electroweak production or coming from Higgs-boson decays.

We numerically integrate finite two- and three-loop scalar integrals using the threshold subtraction method. Multi-loop scattering amplitudes are difficult to evaluate due to singularities of the integrals involved, especially with increasing number of loops, external legs, and mass scales. For the first time at two loops, we enable their direct numerical integration by tackling infrared, ultraviolet and threshold singularities simultaneously using local subtractions. We demonstrate the feasibility of our approach by calculating previously unknown perturbative corrections for processes of interest to the Large Hadron Collider., Comment: 52 pages, 4 figures, 7 tables

The present paper extends the theory of Adaptive Virtual Element Methods (AVEMs) to the three-dimensional meshes showing the possibility to bound the stabilization term by the residual-type error estimator. This new bound enables a stabilization-free a posteriori control for the energy error. Following the recent studies for the bi-dimensional case, we investigate the case of tetrahedral elements with aligned edges and faces. We believe that the AVEMs can be an efficient strategy to address the mesh conforming requirements of standard three-dimensional Adaptive Finite Element Methods (AFEMs), which typically extend the refinement procedure to non-marked mesh cells. Indeed, numerical tests on the Fichera corner shape domain show that this method can reduce the number of three-dimensional cells generated in the refinement process by about 30% with compared to standard AFEMs, for a given error threshold.

We present the two-loop mixed strong-electroweak virtual corrections to the charged current Drell-Yan process. The final-state collinear singularities are regularised by the lepton mass. The evaluation of all the relevant Feynman integrals, including those with up to two different internal massive lines, has been worked out relying on semi-analytical techniques, using complex-valued masses. We can provide, at any arbitrary phase-space point, the solution as a power series in the $W$-boson mass, around a reference value. Experiments aimed at direct searches for WIMP dark matter require highly effective reduction of backgrounds and control of any residual radioactive contamination. In particular, neutrons interacting with atomic nuclei represent an important class of backgrounds due to the expected similarity of a WIMP-nucleon interaction, so that such experiments often feature a dedicated neutron detector surrounding the active target volume. In the context of the development of DarkSide-20k detector at INFN Gran Sasso National Laboratory (LNGS), several R&D projects were conceived and developed for the creation of a new hybrid material rich in both hydrogen and gadolinium nuclei to be employed as an essential element of the neutron detector. Thanks to its very high cross-section for neutron capture, gadolinium is one of the most widely used elements in neutron detectors, while the hydrogen-rich material is instrumental in efficiently moderating the neutrons. In this paper results from one of the R&Ds are presented. In this effort the new hybrid material was obtained as a poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) matrix, loaded with gadolinium oxide in the form of nanoparticles. We describe its realization, including all phases of design, purification, construction, characterization, and determination of mechanical properties of the new material.

We present an optimization procedure for generic polygonal or polyhedral meshes, tailored for the Virtual Element Method (VEM). Once the local quality of the mesh elements is analyzed through a quality indicator specific to the VEM, groups of elements are agglomerated to optimize the global mesh quality. The resulting discretization is significantly lighter: we can remove up to 80$\%$ of the mesh elements, based on a user-set parameter, thus reducing the number of faces, edges, and vertices. This results in a drastic reduction of the total number of degrees of freedom associated with a discrete problem defined over the mesh with the VEM, in particular, for high-order formulations. We show how the VEM convergence rate is preserved in the optimized meshes, and the approximation errors are comparable with those obtained with the original ones. We observe that the optimization has a regularization effect over low-quality meshes, removing the most pathological elements. This regularization effect is evident in cases where the original meshes cause the VEM to diverge, while the optimized meshes lead to convergence. We conclude by showing how the optimization of a real CAD model can be used effectively in the simulation of a time-dependent problem.

In the present work we introduce a novel refinement algorithm for two-dimensional elliptic partial differential equations discretized with Virtual Element Method (VEM). The algorithm improves the numerical solution accuracy and the mesh quality through a controlled refinement strategy applied to the generic polygonal elements of the domain tessellation. The numerical results show that the outlined strategy proves to be versatile and applicable to any two-dimensional problem where polygonal meshes offer advantages. In particular, we focus on the simulation of flow in fractured media, specifically using the Discrete Fracture Network (DFN) model. A residual a-posteriori error estimator tailored for the DFN case is employed. We chose this particular application to emphasize the effectiveness of the algorithm in handling complex geometries. All the numerical tests demonstrate optimal convergence rates for all the tested VEM orders.

The computational cost associated with reducing tensor integrals to scalar integrals using the Passarino-Veltman method is dominated by the diagonalisation of large systems of equations. These systems of equations are sized according to the number of independent tensor elements that can be constructed using the metric and external momenta. In this article, we present a closed-form solution of this diagonalisation problem in arbitrary tensor integrals. We employ a basis of tensors whose building blocks are the external momentum vectors and a metric tensor transverse to the space of external momenta. The scalar integral coefficients of the basis tensors are obtained by mapping the basis elements to the elements of an orthogonaldual basis. This mapping is succinctly expressed through a formula that resembles the ordering of operators in Wick's theorem. Finally, we provide examples demonstrating the application of our tensor reduction formula to Feynman diagrams in QCD $2 \to 2$ scattering processes, specifically up to three loops., Comment: Version submitted to journal for publication. The compatibility of W-boson mass measurements performed by the ATLAS, LHCb, CDF, and D0 experiments is studied using a coherent framework with theory uncertainty correlations. The measurements are combined using a number of recent sets of parton distribution functions (PDF), and are further combined with the average value of measurements from the Large Electron-Positron collider. The considered PDF sets generally have a low compatibility with a suite of global rapidity-sensitive Drell-Yan measurements. The most compatible set is CT18 due to its larger uncertainties. A combination of all mW measurements yields a value of mW = 80394.6 +- 11.5 MeV with the CT18 set, but has a probability of compatibility of 0.5% and is therefore disfavoured. Combinations are performed removing each measurement individually, and a 91% probability of compatibility is obtained when the CDF measurement is removed. The corresponding value of the W boson mass is 80369.2 +- 13.3 MeV, which differs by 3.6 sigma from the CDF value determined using the same PDF set., Comment: Submitted to EPJC

The weak mixing angle is a probe of the vector-axial coupling structure of electroweak interactions. It has been measured precisely at the $Z$-pole by experiments at the LEP and SLD colliders, but its energy dependence above $M_Z$ remains unconstrained. In this contribution we propose to exploit measurements of Neutral-Current Drell Yan at large invariant dilepton masses at the Large Hadron Collider, to determine the scale dependence of the weak mixing angle in the $\overline{MS}$ renormalisation scheme, $\sin^2 \theta_w^{\overline{MS}}(\mu)$. Such a measurement can be used to test the Standard Model predictions for the $\overline{MS}$ running at TeV scales, and to set model-independent constraints on new states with electroweak quantum numbers. To this end, we present an implementation of $\sin^2 \theta_w^{\overline{MS}}(\mu)$ in the POWHEG-BOX Monte Carlo event generator, which we use to explore the potential of future analyses with the LHC Run~3 and High-Luminosity datasets. APEIRON is a framework encompassing the general architecture of a distributed heterogeneous processing platform and the corresponding software stack, from the low level device drivers up to the high level programming model. For the 2D and 3D Virtual Element Methods (VEM), a new approach to improve the conditioning of local and global matrices in the presence of badly-shaped polytopes is proposed. It defines the local projectors and the local degrees of freedom with respect to a set of scaled monomials recomputed on more well-shaped polytopes. This new approach is less computationally demanding than using the orthonormal polynomial basis. The effectiveness of our procedure is tested on different numerical examples characterized by challenging geometries of increasing complexity.

Measurements of neutral current Drell-Yan production at large invariant dilepton masses can be used to test the energy scale dependence (running) of the electroweak mixing angle. In this work, we make use of a novel implementation of the full next-to-leading order electroweak radiative corrections to the Drell-Yan process using the $\overline{\mathrm{MS}}$ renormalization scheme for the electroweak mixing angle. The potential of future analyses using proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}=13.6~\mathrm{TeV}$ in the Run 3 and High-Luminosity phases of the LHC is explored. In this way, the Standard Model predictions for the $\overline{\mathrm{MS}}$ running at $\mathrm{TeV}$ scales can be probed.

We introduce an observable relevant for the determination of the $W$-boson mass $m_W$ at hadron colliders. This observable is defined as an asymmetry around the jacobian peak of the charged-lepton transverse-momentum distribution in the charged-current Drell-Yan process. We discuss the observable's theoretical prediction, presenting results at different orders in QCD, and showing its perturbative stability. Its definition as a single scalar number and its linear sensitivity to $m_W$ allow a clean extraction of the latter and a straightforward discussion of the associated theoretical systematics: a perturbative QCD uncertainty of ${\cal O}(\pm 5)$ MeV on $m_W$ can be established by means of this observable, relying solely on charged-current Drell-Yan information. Owing to its relatively inclusive nature, the observable displays desirable properties also from the experimental viewpoint, especially for the unfolding of detector effects. In this work we propose tailored model order reduction for varying boundary optimal control problems governed by parametric partial differential equations. With varying boundary control, we mean that a specific parameter changes where the boundary control acts on the system. This peculiar formulation might benefit from model order reduction. Indeed, fast and reliable simulations of this model can be of utmost usefulness in many applied fields, such as geophysics and energy engineering. However, varying boundary control features very complicated and diversified parametric behaviour for the state and adjoint variables. The state solution, for example, changing the boundary control parameter, might feature transport phenomena. Moreover, the problem loses its affine structure. It is well known that classical model order reduction techniques fail in this setting, both in accuracy and in efficiency. Thus, we propose reduced approaches inspired by the ones used when dealing with wave-like phenomena. Indeed, we compare standard proper orthogonal decomposition with two tailored strategies: geometric recasting and local proper orthogonal decomposition. Geometric recasting solves the optimization system in a reference domain simplifying the problem at hand avoiding hyper-reduction, while local proper orthogonal decomposition builds local bases to increase the accuracy of the reduced solution in very general settings (where geometric recasting is unfeasible). We compare the various approaches on two different numerical experiments based on geometries of increasing complexity.

A timely and long-term programme of kaon decay measurements at a new level of precision is presented, leveraging the capabilities of the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS). The proposed programme is firmly anchored on the experience built up studying kaon decays at the SPS over the past four decades, and includes rare processes, CP violation, dark sectors, symmetry tests and other tests of the Standard Model. The experimental programme is based on a staged approach involving experiments with charged and neutral kaon beams, as well as operation in beam-dump mode. We propose a quality-based optimization strategy to reduce the total number of degrees of freedom associated to a discrete problem defined over a polygonal tessellation with the Virtual Element Method. The presented Quality Agglomeration algorithm relies only on the geometrical properties of the problem polygonal mesh, agglomerating groups of neighboring elements. We test this approach in the context of fractured porous media, in which the generation of a global conforming mesh on a Discrete Fracture Network leads to a considerable number of unknowns, due to the presence of highly complex geometries and the significant size of the computational domains. We show the efficiency and the robustness of our approach, applied independently on each fracture for different network configurations, exploiting the flexibility of the Virtual Element Method in handling general polygonal elements.

Modeling physical phenomena like heat transport and diffusion is crucially dependent on the numerical solution of partial differential equations (PDEs). A PDE solver finds the solution given coefficients and a boundary condition, whereas an inverse PDE solver goes the opposite way and reconstructs these inputs from an existing solution. In this article, we investigate techniques for solving inverse PDE problems using a gradient-based methodology. Conventional PDE solvers based on the finite element method require a domain meshing step that can be fragile and costly. Grid-free Monte Carlo methods instead stochastically sample paths using variations of the walk on spheres algorithm to construct an unbiased estimator of the solution. The uncanny similarity of these methods to physically-based rendering algorithms has been observed by several recent works. In the area of rendering, recent progress has led to the development of efficient unbiased derivative estimators. They solve an adjoint form of the problem and exploit arithmetic invertibility to compute gradients using a constant amount of memory and linear time complexity. Could these two lines of work be combined to compute cheap parametric derivatives of a grid-free PDE solver? We present an algorithm to evaluate multiloop Feynman integrals with an arbitrary number of internal massive lines, with the masses being in general complex-valued, and its implementation in the \textsc{Mathematica} package \textsc{SeaSyde}. The implementation solves by series expansions the system of differential equations satisfied by the Master Integrals. At variance with respect to other existing codes, the analytical continuation of the solution is performed in the complex plane associated to each kinematical invariant. Electron Ion Collider (EIC) is a particle accelerator facility planned for construction at Brookhaven National Laboratory on Long Island, New York by the United States Department of Energy. EIC will provide capabilities of colliding beams of polarized electrons with polarized beams of proton and light ions. EIC will be one of the largest and most sophisticated new accelerator facilities worldwide, and the only new large-scale accelerator facility planned for construction in the United States in the next few decades. The versatility, resolving power and intensity of EIC will present many new opportunities to address some of the crucial and fundamental open scientific questions in particle physics. This white paper concerns theoretical and phenomenological aspects relevant to the physics of future $e^+e^-$ colliders, in particular regarding initial-state QED radiation. The contributions each contain key technical aspects, and are formulated in a pedagogical manner so as to render them accessible also to those who are not directly working on these and immediately-related topics. This should help both experts and non-experts understand the theoretical challenges that we shall face at future $e^+e^-$ colliders. Specifically, this paper contains descriptions of the treatment of initial state radiation from several Monte Carlo collaborations, as well as contributions that explain a number of more theoretical developments with promise of future phenomenological impact., Comment: Contribution to: 2022 Snowmass Summer Study

In this work, we propose the application of the eXtended Finite Element Method (XFEM) in the context of the coupling between three-dimensional and one-dimensional elliptic problems. In particular, we consider the case in which the 3D-1D coupled problem arises from the geometrical model reduction of a fully three-dimensional problem, characterized by thin tubular inclusions embedded in a much wider domain. In the 3D-1D coupling framework, the use of non conforming meshes is widely adopted. However, since the inclusions typically behave as singular sinks or sources for the 3D problem, mesh adaptation near the embedded 1D domains may be necessary to enhance solution accuracy and recover optimal convergence rates. An alternative to mesh adaptation is represented by the XFEM, which we here propose to enhance the approximation capabilities of an optimization-based 3D-1D coupling approach. An effective quadrature strategy is devised to integrate the enrichment functions and numerical tests on single and multiple segments are proposed to demonstrate the effectiveness of the approach.
