26. Alginate gelling process: use of bivalent ions rich microspheres

Abstract

A new approach for obtaining a controlled gelling process of sodium alginate, based on the use of bivalent ions rich alginate microbeads added as crosslinkers, is presented. Normally, calcium ions are used in the gelation of alginate solutions. In this article, alginate microspheres, obtained by electrospray, and enriched with different bivalent ions ([Ca.sup.2+], [Ba.sup.2+], and [Mg.sup.2+]) are described. Because of the solvent/non-solvent system, it is possible to use also [Mg.sup.2+] as a crosslinker for alginate, despite the fact that it had long been regarded as a nongelling bivalent ion. The morphology and the ions content of the microspheres are evaluated. Gels are characterized according to type and amount of the ions added to the alginate solution, using rheological measurements to assess the variation in the storage modulus (G') and loss modulus (G'). The gel point is then detected using magnesium ions. Abstract

Promezio is a famous Italian chemistry professor who is searching for missing element n. 61. In 1924 his laboratory is partially destroyed by a fire and he disappears. Almost one hundred years later high school students are recruited to investigate this strange case. “The strange case of Professor Promezio” represents a unicum in the panorama of laboratory activities for high school students: it is a cold case in which students are asked to investigate a fact that took place almost a century ago. Through the chemical analysis of different findings, the connection with historical events of that period, the study of the suspects' interrogation reports, the reproduction of the experiments conducted by Professor Promezio, the students will identify the possible culprit. A complex scientific problem is solved exploring different areas of chemistry and, in addition, interconnections with history, geography, ethics and other school subjects are deepened., Substantia, Vol. 4 No. 2 (2020)

Abstract

The consolidation treatment of porous materials is performed by in situ and frontal polymerization of acrylic monomers inside a porous stone and its penetration is detected by using unilateral NMR and magnetic resonance imaging. The results have indicated that unilateral NMR represents an inexpensive and simple technique for the non-invasive observation of the water uptake and of the effect of consolidation procedures in porous materials.
