Shrinking the volumetric footprint of gas sensors is desirable as it allows for nonintrusive, nonperturbing gas mixture analysis and access to tight enclosures. Micro-resonators are a perfect candidate for these sensors as their size parameter (~micron) is minimal, and the typical surface propagating whispering gallery modes can interact with an analyte without disrupting the environment. The large, quality factor (Q) of these resonant cavity modes enables long interaction lengths on the order of 100s of centimeters between the optical field and analyte. Thus, the presence of a gas different than the nominal environment will result in a shift of the resonant properties, including the resonant wavelength, amplitude, and quality factor, that can be detected in real-time. To illustrate this effect, we utilized a spherical micro resonator on the end of a piece of optical fiber, formed using standard ball lens fabrication, and excited the resonant modes using a tapered optical fiber connected to tunable Infrared laser. The resonator was fixed in contact with the tapered region of fiber, and the assembly was placed inside an in-house, optically coupled, vacuum-tight vessel for gas testing. We compared the spectral response of air, pure CO2, and pure N2 gas, observing spectral shifting and broadening of the cavity resonances. In addition, the effect of vessel temperature on resonance peak position due to the thermo-optic effect was investigated and quantified. Lastly, a feedback arm was added to the setup to reduce signal noise and automated data analysis was implemented to improve data clarity.

This paper discusses ongoing research at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) that investigates the effectiveness of spherical micro-resonators, coupled to a symmetrically tapered optical fiber, as a gas sensor. We will discuss silica-based microspheres and optimized tapered fiber coupling systems to detect greenhouse gases, i.e. CO2 in this context. The coupling setup is designed to be portable and amenable to different controlled environments, from constrained and controlled geometries to open and flexible enclosures. 3D-printed spherical resonator and tapered-fiber holders were made to satisfy different requirements. We produced microspheres for absorption spectroscopy of targeted gas and fabricated tapers by HF etching, using an HF-resistant fixture for safer handling and reduced waste. Detection within loose enclosures was performed as a preliminary study, where we observed spectral shift and broadening in the cavity resonances induced by the gaseous environments. Optically coupled vacuum-tight vessels have been designed and built to understand environmental effects.

Building on previous work, we have designed a Nd doped fiber for E-band amplification. Modeling results indicate a fiber design that is applicable to telecom amplifiers.

We present 10W single-mode fiber laser based on Ndp3 fiber operating at 1428nm. All-solid fused silica microstructured waveguide fiber design is employed to suppress amplification at 1μm. The Ndp3 fiber is pumped by commercial multi-mode 880nm diode.

A large mode area fiber coupler based on multi-core spectrally and modally filtered transfer is presented. Relative coupling to the cross-port above 80% was measured. Only fundamental mode transfer was observed given a multimode launch.

To help facilitate the modeling of new fiber laser systems, such as those with complex functional microstructures, we report on a simplified modeling methodology that can accommodate the parasitic kinetic effects often present in such systems. The essence of our approach is to integrate kinetics over the length of the gain medium at the outset, thereby forfeiting longitudinally resolved information about the system but simplifying its energetics analysis. To illustrate the benefits of our new approach over more conventional coupled-rate-equation analyses, we apply our model to an Nd3+-doped fiber laser operating on the F3/24−I413/2 transition at 1400 nm. The model produces closed-form solutions for the various output channels available to the pump power and enables projections of ultimate laser performance to be conveniently generated.

19.2 dB of small signal gain and 1.2 W of average power at 1427 nm are demonstrated in an Nd3+ fiber amplifier. Waveguide design was employed to suppress amplification at 1µm.

A Nd3+ fiber amplifier with gain from 1376 nm to 1466 nm is demonstrated. This is enabled by a wavelength selective waveguide that suppresses amplified spontaneous emission between 850 nm and 1150 nm. It is shown that while excited state absorption (ESA) precludes net gain below 1375 nm with the exception of a small band from 1333 nm to 1350 nm, ESA diminishes steadily beyond 1375 nm allowing for the construction of an efficient fiber amplifier with a gain peak at 1400 nm and the potential for gain from 1375 nm to 1500 nm. A peak small signal gain of 13.3 dB is measured at 1402 nm with a noise figure of 7.6 dB. Detailed measurements of the Nd3+ emission and excited state absorption cross sections suggest the potential for better performance in improved fibers. Specifically, reduction of the fiber mode field diameter from 10.5 µm to 5.25 µm and reduction of the fiber background loss to 20 dB over 30 nm of bandwidth. Such an amplifier would have a form factor and optical properties similar to current erbium fiber amplifiers, enabling modern fiber optic communication systems to operate in the E-band with amplifier technology similar to that employed in the C and L bands.

A 9.3dB improvement in optical gain and a 100x improvement in total optical power over prior published experimental results from the 4F3/2 to 4I13/2 transition in an Nd3+ doped fused silica optical fiber is demonstrated. This is enabled via an optical fiber waveguide design that creates high spectral attenuation in the 1050-1120nm-wavelength range, a continuous spectral filter for the primary 4F3/2 to 4I11/2 optical transition. A maximum output power at 1427nm of 1.2W was attained for 43mW coupled seed laser power and 22.2W of coupled pump diode laser power at 880nm a net optical gain of 14.5dB. Reducing the coupled seed laser power to 2.5mW enabled the system to attain 19.3dB of gain for 16.5W of coupled pump power. Four issues limited results; non-optimal seed laser wavelength, amplified spontaneous emission on the 4F3/2 to 4I9/2 optical transition, low absorption of pump light from the cladding and high spectral attenuation in the 1350-1450nm range. Future fibers that mitigate these issues should lead to significant improvements in the efficiency of the laser amplifier, though the shorter wavelength region of the transition from 1310nm to >1350nm is still expected to be limited by excited state absorption.
