Abstract Background Recent trials suggested that the Crohn’s disease (CD) exclusion diet (CDED) plus partial enteral nutrition (PEN) is a safe and effective strategy in remission induction of paediatric-onset CD. However, real-world evidence regarding the safety and efficacy of the CDED plus PEN approach is still lacking. The present case-series study reported our experience with the outcomes of CDED plus PEN in the paediatric-onset CD at disease onset and after the loss of response to biologics. Methods We conducted a retrospective chart review on children who were treated with CDED plus PEN through the period from July 2019 and December 2020. Clinical and laboratory data were retrieved and compared at baseline, 6, 12, and 24 weeks of treatment. The primary endpoint of the present study was the rate of clinical remission. Results The present study retrieved the data from 15 patients. Of them, nine patients were treatment naïve at the time of initiation of CDED plus PEN (group A) and the remaining patients relapsed on biologics before treatment. All patients in groups A and B exhibited clinical remission in week six, which was sustained until week 12. At the end of the follow-up, the clinical remission rate was 87% and 60% in groups A and B, respectively. No side effects were observed in both groups. In the first part of this work we study the color coherence phenomenon by considering the well-known quark-antiquark antenna with an in-medium hard gluon emission and an extra very soft emission outside it—double antenna. By discussing the coherence effects in terms of the survival probability, we generalize previous studies of the antenna radiation to the case of more than two emitters. After providing support to the jet quenching picture with effective emitters in the QCD cascade, we present a novel setup of an antenna splitting inside the medium taking into account the finite formation time of the dipole, which turns out to be an important scale. We read into the role of coherence and the relevant time scales which control the scenario, while also providing theoretical support for vacuum-like emissions early in the medium. Finally, by mapping the spectrum of in-medium splittings through the corresponding kinematical Lund diagram, we appreciate regimes of a close correspondence to a semi-classical description.

Abstract Reservoir-triggered seismicity commonly occurs as a result of reservoir impoundment. In particular, the Nova Ponte reservoir triggered a series of earthquakes, including the 1998 M4.0 earthquake, which represents the second-largest earthquake triggered by reservoir impoundment in Brazil. The earthquake occurred after prolonged seismic activity following reservoir impoundment starting in 1993. After more than two decades, the mechanisms governing these earthquakes and their relation with the spatiotemporal evolution of the seismic events are still poorly understood. Here, we explain the causal mechanisms of the two largest earthquakes: an initial response M3.5 in 1995 and the delayed M4.0 in 1998. To this end, we numerically simulate the poromechanical subsurface response to reservoir impoundment using a 3D model that includes three geological layers down to 10 km depth. From the proposed potential nodal planes of the 1995 M3.5 earthquake, we show that the earthquake has most likely occurred on a vertical, E–W-oriented strike-slip fault with a reverse-displacement component. Deviatoric stresses generated by the water column loading on the surface, superimposed by undrained pore pressure enhancement in deep low-permeability layers can explain the fault reactivation. We find that for the 1998 M4.0 earthquake to occur, conductive flow pathways with permeability as high as 6.6·10−15 m2 should exist to transmit pore pressure to a deep critically oriented fault. Our analysis raises the importance of accounting for coupled poromechanical mechanisms controlling fault stability, hydromechanical properties of different rock layers, and realistic shape of the reservoir to accurately assess the potential for reservoir-triggered seismicity. We conclude that reliable forecasting models require accurate subsurface characterization before reservoir filling to enable managing the associated reservoir-triggered seismicity.

Abstract At leading-order, the standard dilute-dense Color Glass Condensate formula used for two-particle correlations in proton-nucleus collisions, whose symmetries prevent the generation of odd azimuthal anisotropy harmonics, is the dilute projectile limit of the dense-dense formalism. However, when the projectile is genuinely dilute, the complete formulation contains additional contributions at the same leading order in the strong coupling constant. In this work we investigate those low projectile density contributions that are relevant when the particles are produced at forward rapidities. We find that they are responsible for non-zero odd harmonics which are negative, in qualitative agreement with recent experimental measurements at the Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider.

Post-injection seismicity at the enhanced geothermal system of Basel, Switzerland, was caused by poroelastic stress relaxation of stabilized faults during injection, according to numerical simulations of the stress field applied on a fault network.

Abstract Low-enthalpy geothermal energy (LEGE) is a carbon-free and renewable source to provide cooling and heating to infrastructures (e.g. buildings) by exchanging their temperature with that of the ground. The exchange of temperature modifies the groundwater temperature around LEGE installations, which may contribute to enhancing the capacity of aquifers to degrade organic contaminants of emerging concern (OCECs), whose presence is significantly increasing in urban aquifers. Here, we investigate the impact of LEGE on OCECs and their bioremediation potential through numerical modelling of synthetic and real-based cases. Simulation results demonstrate that: (i) LEGE facilities have the potential to noticeably modify the concentrations of OCECs; and (ii) the final impact depends on the design of the facility. This study suggests that optimized LEGE facility designs could contribute to the degradation of OCECs present in urban aquifers, thus improving groundwater quality and increasing its availability in urban areas.

Abstract Deep geothermal energy (DGE) represents an opportunity for a sustainable and carbon-free energy supply. One of the main concerns of DGE is induced seismicity that may produce damaging earthquakes, challenging its widespread exploitation. It is widely believed that the seismicity risk can be controlled by using doublet systems circulating water to minimize the injection-induced pressure changes. However, cold water reinjection may also give rise to thermal stresses within and beyond the cooled region, whose potential impacts on fault reactivation are less well understood. Here, we investigate by coupled thermo-hydro-mechanical modeling the processes that may lead to fault reactivation in a hot sedimentary aquifer (HSA) in which water is circulated through a doublet. We show that thermal stresses are transmitted much ahead of the cooled region and are likely to destabilize faults located far away from the doublet. Meanwhile, the fault permeability mainly controls the fault reactivation timing, which entails the importance of employing appropriate characterization methods. This investigation is crucial for understanding the mechanisms controlling induced seismicity associated with DGE in a HSA and allows the success of future DGE projects.

Abstract QCD jets produced in heavy-ion collisions at LHC or RHIC energies partially evolve inside the produced hot and dense quark gluon plasma, offering unique opportunities to study QCD splitting processes in different backgrounds. Induced (modified) splittings are expected to be the most relevant mechanism driving the modifications of in-medium jets compared to vacuum jets for a wide sets of observables. Although color coherence among different emitters has been identified as an essential mechanism in studies of the QCD antenna radiation, it is usually neglected in the multi-gluon medium-induced cascade. This independent gluon emission approximation can be analytically proved to be valid in the limit of very large media, but corrections or modifications to it have not been computed before in the context of the evolution (or rate) equation describing the gluon cascade. We propose a modified evolution equation that includes corrections due to the interference of subsequent emitters. In order to do so, we first compute a modified splitting kernel following the usual procedure of factorizing it from the subsequent Brownian motion. The calculation is performed in the two-gluon configuration with no overlapping formation times, that is expected to provide the first correction to the completely independent picture.

Geo-energy and geo-engineering applications, such as improved oil recovery (IOR), geologic carbon storage, and enhanced geothermal systems (EGSs), involve coupled thermo-hydro-mechanical (THM) processes that result from fluid injection and production. In some cases, reservoirs are highly fractured and the geomechanical response is controlled by fractures. Therefore, fractures should explicitly be included into numerical models to realistically simulate the THM responses of the subsurface. In this study, we perform coupled THM numerical simulations of water injection into naturally fractured reservoirs (NFRs) using CODE_BRIGHT and TOUGH-UDEC codes. CODE_BRIGHT is a finite element method (FEM) code that performs fully coupled THM analysis in geological media and TOUGH-UDEC sequentially solves coupled THM processes by combining a finite volume method (FVM) code that solves non-isothermal multiphase flow (TOUGH2) with a distinct element method (DEM) code that solves the mechanical problem (UDEC). First, we validate the two codes against a semi-analytical solution for water injection into a single deformable fracture considering variable permeability based on the cubic law. Then, we compare simulation results of the two codes in an idealized conceptual model that includes one horizontal fracture and in a more realistic model with multiple fractures. Each code models fractures differently. UDEC calculates fracture deformation from the fracture normal and shear stiffnesses, while CODE_BRIGHT treats fractures as equivalent porous media and uses the equivalent Young's modulus and Poisson's ratio of the fracture. Finally, we obtain comparable results of pressure, temperature, stress and displacement distributions and evolutions for the single horizontal fracture model. Despite some similarities, the two codes provide increasingly different results as model complexity increases. These differences highlight the challenging task of accurately modeling coupled THM processes in fractured media given their high nonlinearity.

Abstract We map the spectrum of $$1\rightarrow 2$$ 1→2 parton splittings inside a medium characterized by a transport coefficient $${\hat{q}}$$ q^ onto the kinematical Lund plane, taking into account the finite formation time of the process. We discuss the distinct regimes arising in this map for in-medium splittings, pointing out the close correspondence to a semi-classical description in the limit of hard, collinear radiation with short formation times. Although we disregard any modifications of the original parton kinematics in course of the propagation through the medium, subtle modifications to the radiation pattern compared to the vacuum baseline can be traced back to the physics of color decoherence and accumulated interactions in the medium. We provide theoretical support to vacuum-like emissions inside the medium by delimiting the regions of phase space where it is dominant, identifying also the relevant time-scales involved. The observed modifications are shown to be quite general for any dipole created in the medium.

Can we pump water into deep active volcanic areas? Here, the authors model the effect of water circulation into supercritical geothermal systems and show that the effect of rock cooling dominates the seismicity increase over the pore pressure changes.

Resumen: Introducción: La ingesta de cáusticos es la causa más frecuente de consulta tras el contacto con un producto doméstico. Un grupo de pacientes podría considerarse de bajo riesgo y no recibir corticoides parenterales ni realizársele endoscopia, procedimiento considerado terapéuticamente agresivo, sobre todo en la edad pediátrica. Objetivo: Evaluar la seguridad y el beneficio de un protocolo menos agresivo en los pacientes definidos de bajo riesgo. Material y métodos: Estudio analítico-observacional de los pacientes que consultaron por ingesta de cáustico entre enero de 2011 y diciembre de 2015. Se diferenciaron 2 periodos según el protocolo vigente. Periodo-1: protocolo habitual (incluido ingreso y administración de corticoide-antibiótico parenteral) y periodo-2: protocolo menos agresivo en los pacientes de bajo riesgo (prueba de tolerancia oral tras 6 h y alta hospitalaria si persistían asintomáticos). Se consideraron de bajo riesgo si se cumplían todos los criterios: ingesta involuntaria, ausencia de síntomas y lesiones orales. En el resto de pacientes se mantuvo el protocolo habitual. Se consideró como complicación el reingreso con diagnóstico de lesiones digestivas. Resultados: Se incluyeron 48 pacientes en el periodo 1 y 35 en el periodo 2. En el periodo 2 cumplían criterios de bajo riesgo 13 pacientes. La adherencia al protocolo menos agresivo fue del 100%. Ningún paciente de bajo riesgo precisó ingreso tras el alta ni realización de endoscopia. En el periodo 1 la adherencia al protocolo habitual fue del 60,4%. Seis pacientes se habrían beneficiado de la aplicación del protocolo menos agresivo. Conclusiones: Adoptar una actitud más conservadora en los pacientes de bajo riesgo es seguro. Estos pacientes se benefician de la realización de una observación clínica, obviando medidas más agresivas con posibles efectos iatrogénicos secundarios. Resumen: La esofagitis eosinofílica es una enfermedad emergente, crónica, mediada por el sistema inmune y caracterizada por síntomas de disfunción esofágica e inflamación con infiltración eosinofílica aislada en el esófago. Es más frecuente en varones y en sujetos atópicos y los síntomas varían con la edad: en niños pequeños se manifiesta con vómitos, dolor abdominal y problemas con la alimentación y en niños mayores y adolescentes con disfagia e impactación alimentaria. El diagnóstico se basa en la presencia de síntomas e inflamación esofágica con ≥ 15 eosinófilos/campo de gran aumento, tras descartar otras causas de eosinofilia esofágica. Sin tratamiento, la enfermedad suele persistir y puede evolucionar a formas fibroestenóticas más frecuentes en el adulto. Las opciones terapéuticas incluyen inhibidores de la bomba de protones, dieta de eliminación empírica y corticoides deglutidos. Tras el tratamiento de inducción es aconsejable la terapia de mantenimiento. La dieta es el único tratamiento que se dirige a la causa de la enfermedad, al identificar los alimentos desencadenantes. La respuesta a los tratamientos requiere la evaluación histológica, por la escasa concordancia entre los síntomas y la inflamación esofágica.El manejo práctico de la esofagitis eosinofílica presenta desafíos debido, entre otras causas, a la falta de disponibilidad actual de fármacos específicos y a su abordaje con tratamientos dietéticos, en ocasiones, complejos. The response to the treatments requires a histological assessment due to the poor agreement between the symptoms and the oesophageal inflammation.The practical management of Eosinophilic oesophagitis presents with challenges, due to, among other causes, the current lack of availability of specific drugs, and to its approach with, occasionally complex, diet treatments. The present document, prepared by the Working Group on Eosinophilic Gastrointestinal Disorders of the Spanish Society of Paediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition, has as its objective to help in the diagnostic and therapeutic approach to paediatric eosinophilic oesophagitis, based on the recent evidence-based consensus guidelines.

Geologic carbon storage will most likely be feasible only if carbon dioxide (CO2) is utilized for improved oil recovery (IOR). The majority of carbonate reservoirs that bear hydrocarbons are fractured. Thus, the geomechanical response of the reservoir and caprock to IOR operations is controlled by pre-existing fractures. However, given the complexity of including fractures in numerical models, they are usually neglected and incorporated into an equivalent porous media. In this paper, we perform fully coupled thermo-hydro-mechanical numerical simulations of fluid injection and production into a naturally fractured carbonate reservoir. Simulation results show that fluid pressure propagates through the fractures much faster than the reservoir matrix as a result of their permeability contrast. Nevertheless, pressure diffusion propagates through the matrix blocks within days, reaching equilibrium with the fluid pressure in the fractures. In contrast, the cooling front remains within the fractures because it advances much faster by advection through the fractures than by conduction towards the matrix blocks. Moreover, the total stresses change proportionally to pressure changes and inversely proportional to temperature changes, with the maximum change occurring in the longitudinal direction of the fracture and the minimum in the direction normal to it. We find that shear failure is more likely to occur in the fractures and reservoir matrix that undergo cooling than in the region that is only affected by pressure changes. We also find that stability changes in the caprock are small and its integrity is maintained. We conclude that explicitly including fractures into numerical models permits identifying fracture instability that may be otherwise neglected.

Geologic carbon storage is considered as a requisite to effectively mitigate climate change, so large amounts of carbon dioxide (CO2) are expected to be injected in sedimentary saline formations. CO2 injection leads to the creation of acidic solution when it dissolves into the resident brine, which can react with reservoir rock, especially carbonates. We numerically investigated the behavior of reservoir-caprock system where CO2 injection-induced changes in the hydraulic and geomechanical properties of Apulian limestone were measured in the laboratory. We found that porosity of the limestone slightly decreases after CO2 treatment, which lead to a permeability reduction by a factor of two. In the treated specimens, calcite dissolution was observed at the inlet, but carbonate precipitation occurred at the outlet, which was closed during the reaction time of three days. Additionally, the relative permeability curves were modified after CO2–rock interaction, especially the one for water, which evolved from a quadratic to a quasi-linear function of the water saturation degree. Geomechanically, the limestone became softer and it was weakened after being altered by CO2. Simulation results showed that the property changes occurring within the CO2 plume caused a stress redistribution because CO2 treated limestone became softer and tended to deform more in response to pressure buildup than the pristine rock. The reduction in strength induced by geochemical reactions may eventually cause shear failure within the CO2 plume affected rock. This combination of laboratory experiments with numerical simulations leads to a better understanding of the implications of coupled chemo-mechanical interactions in geologic carbon storage.

El present article és un estudi de la depuració del magisteri de Castelló realitzada per les autoritats del Front Popular al llarg del període comprés entre 1936 i 1938. El professorat havia de ser un dels elements principals per a poder dur a terme les nombroses reformes educatives projectades durant el període de la Segona República, especiaiment les de contingut ideològic. La depuració del magisteri va suposar una via imprescindible perquè el govern del Front Popular poguera abastar gran part dels objectius inicialment proposats en matèria d’educació, per mitjà dels quals es pretenia transformar tot l’antic entramat educatiu nacional, totalment mediatitzat per l’Església, en un nou sistema bàsicament laic
