The feasibility of 2D-intensity and 3D-topography images from a non-invasive Chromatic White Light (CWL) sensor for the age determination of latent fingerprints is investigated. The proposed method might provide the means to solve the so far unresolved issue of determining a fingerprints age in forensics. Conducting numerous experiments for an indoor crime scene using selected surfaces, different influences on the aging of fingerprints are investigated and the resulting aging variability is determined in terms of inter-person, intra-person, inter-finger and intra-finger variation. Main influence factors are shown to be the sweat composition, temperature, humidity, wind, UV-radiation, surface type, contamination of the finger with water-containing substances, resolution and measured area size, whereas contact time, contact pressure and smearing of the print seem to be of minor importance. Such influences lead to a certain experimental variability in inter-person and intra-person variation, which is higher than the inter-finger and intra-finger variation. Comparing the aging behavior of 17 different features using 1490 time series with a total of 41,520 fingerprint images, the great potential of the CWL technique in combination with the binary pixel feature from prior work is shown. Performing three different experiments for the classification of fingerprints into the two time classes [0, 5 h] and [5, 24 h], a maximum classification performance of 79.29% (kappa=0.46) is achieved for a general case, which is further improved for special cases. The statistical significance of the two best-performing features (both binary pixel versions based on 2D-intensity images) is manually shown and a feature fusion is performed, highlighting the strong dependency of the features on each other. It is concluded that such method might be combined with additional capturing devices, such as microscopes or spectroscopes, to a very promising age estimation scheme., (Copyright © 2012 Elsevier Ireland Ltd. Objective: To investigate the different effects of hypertension, hyperlipidaemia and atherosclerosis on the visco-elastic properties of large arteries., Design: Vessel wall properties were determined in patients who had been subjected for the first time to coronary arteriography. Normotensive patients with no coronary disease (n = 15), one-vessel disease (n = 15) or two- or three-vessel disease (n = 15), 15 treated hypertensive patients (mean +/- SEM duration of hypertension 9.6 +/- 1.7 years) with no coronary disease and normocholesterolaemia and 15 healthy controls were matched for blood pressure, age and sex., Methods: Arterial distension of the common carotid artery was determined by using a multigate Doppler system. The blood pressure curve was recorded by finger plethysmography., Results: The end-diastolic diameter was significantly higher in the hypertensives (P<0.05) but not significantly different in the normotensives compared with the controls. Arterial distensibility was significantly lower in the hypertensive group [(13.3 +/- 0.8) x 10(-3)/kPa] than in the controls [(19.1 +/- 1.5) x 10(-3)/kP; P<0.01), in the group with no coronary disease [(18.8 +/- 1.3) x 10(-3)/kPa; P<0.01] and in those with one-vessel disease [(17.7 +/- 1.4) x 10(-3)/kPa; P<0.05]. Arterial distensibility was not significantly lower in the hypertensives than in the group with two- or three-vessel disease [(15.0 +/- 1.0) x 10(-3)/kPa; NS). No significant correlation was found between cholesterol or lipoprotein(a) levels and arterial distensibility in the normotensive patients., Conclusions: Hypertension is the predominant factor affecting the visco-elastic properties of large arteries. Arterial compliance is significantly altered only in extensive atherosclerosis.

The relation between lipoprotein(a) [Lp(a)] as an independent risk factor for coronary atherosclerosis and the severity and extension of angiographically detectable coronary atherosclerotic lesions has not been systematically evaluated. In 118 male patients (54.3 +/- 7.4 years) with suspected coronary artery disease and without a history of myocardial infarction undergoing coronary angiography, the relation between plasma Lp(a) levels and other lipoproteins and the severity and extension of coronary lesions was studied. The coronary angiograms were evaluated in a blinded manner according to three scores: vessel score (0 to 3 points for 0 to 3 vessels with stenoses > or = 70%), stenosis score (0 to 32 points; number and severity of coronary stenoses or lesions), and extent score (0 to 100 points; length-extension of all coronary lesions in relation to the total coronary vessel length). The score values obtained were analyzed for correlations with age and levels of total cholesterol (6.08 +/- 1.26 mmol/L; mean +/- SD), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (1.04 +/- 0.33 mmol/L), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (4.18 +/- 1.15 mmol/L), triglycerides (1.88 +/- 1.37 mmol/L), and Lp(a) in plasma (19.5 +/- 22.6 mg/dL). Bivariate correlation analysis resulted in positive correlations between Lp(a) and vessel score (P < .01), stenosis score (P < .01), and extent score (P < .05). With multivariate analyses, besides Lp(a) plasma level (nl), only patient age showed a significant correlation to all three scores used, whereas none of the lipid parameters correlated significantly with all three scores.

Purpose: This study examines the relation between lipoprotein (a) protein levels and other lipid parameters and coronary artery disease in white and black patients., Patients and Methods: Plasma lipoprotein (a) protein levels were measured prior to coronary angiography in a population of 127 white and 111 black patients. Each angiogram was given a total coronary artery disease score based on the number and severity of atherosclerotic coronary lesions., Results: White and black patients exhibited no differences in total plasma cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and triglycerides. Black patients had higher lipoprotein (a) protein levels than white patients (8.6 versus 4.0 mg/dL; p < 0.0001). The extent and severity of coronary artery disease was the same in white and black patients. White and black patients with coronary artery disease had higher lipoprotein (a) levels than patients without coronary lesions (4.37 versus 1.99 mg/dL, p = 0.027 for white; 9.23 versus 6.87 mg/dL, p = 0.072 for black). In both groups of patients, there was a weak but significant positive correlation between lipoprotein (a) protein levels and coronary artery disease score., Conclusion: Lipoprotein (a) is higher in patients with coronary artery disease. Black patients have higher plasma lipoprotein (a) protein levels than white patients and a comparable degree of coronary artery disease. It follows that the cardiovascular pathogenicity of lipoprotein (a) is not significantly greater in black patients despite higher lipoprotein (a) levels.
