10. Case Study Research: Training Interdisciplinary Engineers with Context-Dependent Knowledge

Abstract

It is now widely acknowledged that water management discipline is transforming, from being a public health and flood prevention challenge of the nineteenth century to a multi-dimensional challenge of water security for the twenty-first century. In order to train water engineers to be capable of working with this holistic multi-dimensional approach, a new paradigm in engineering education is required. Adjustments already made to undergraduate coursework are not enough; this new paradigm requires modifications to the PhD in engineering, with greater emphasis on interdisciplinary case study research. Such a change can deliver PhD graduates with both sufficient social and technical knowledge, who can then go on to become the hybrid lecturers crucially needed for training future water engineers. Abstract

The submerged membrane adsorption hybrid system (SMAHS) is an attractive solution in treating wastewater; however it faces membrane fouling although to a less extent. In this study, different adsorbents and resins were investigated in order to find a substitute to the powdered activated carbon (PAC); The effect of new backflush was also studied in further reducing the membrane fouling. The SMAHS led to 72–86% dissolved organic carbon (DOC) removal. A detailed study on the transmembrane pressure development led to a conclusion that there is a critical flux and this value is around 16 l/h.m2 for the wastewater studied.

Abstract

Les eaux naturelles comme les effluents secondaires produits par les stations d’épuration contiennent des matières organiques qui constituent actuellement l’une des cibles prioritaires des filières de production d’eau potable ou de réutilisation des eaux usées. Les membranes de Microfiltration et d’Ultrafiltration ne retiennent que très partiellement ces composés organiques de faible masse moléculaire qui sont par ailleurs responsables de phénomènes importants de colmatage. Un réacteur à membranes immergées analogue dans son principe aux bio réacteurs à membrane semble constituer un outil adapté pour réaliser simultanément dans le même équipement la réaction physico-chimique et la séparation membranaire. Les résultats présentés concernent les deux aspects : ils ont été obtenus sur des effluents secondaires ou des solutions de matières humiques : · Recherche d’un adsorbant ou d’une résine échangeuse d’ions susceptible de constituer une alternative au charbon actif en poudre utilisé jusqu’ici, en permettant notamment une régénération plus facile. · Essais à l’échelle pilote sur un réacteur à membranes immergées.

30. Effective natural organic matter removal in pond water by carbon nanotube membrane with flocculation/adsorption.

Abstract

A carbon nanotube (CNT) ultrafiltration (UF) membrane was applied to natural organic matter (NOM) removal in pond water treatment. The source water was pretreated by flocculation and/or adsorption prior to the UF process to alleviate permeate flux decline and improve NOM removal efficiency. The performance of a commercial polyethersulfone (PES) UF membrane was compared to evaluate that of the CNT membrane. The CNTmembrane outperformed the PES-UF membrane. The permeate flux, total organic carbon and humic acid (HA) removal rate of the CNT membrane was observed to be 230 LMH/bar, 60%, and 80% when 30mg/L poly aluminium chloride (PACI) flocculation was applied. This highlights that the permeate flux was three times higher with slightly higher rejection efficiency than the PES-UF membrane. In particular, severe permeate flux decline was completely overcome by the CNT membrane with 30mg/L PACI coagulation. For powder activated carbon (PAC) adsorption, even though there was a severe permeate flux decline in the CNT membrane, almost complete HA removal (98%) was achieved when 0.5 g/L PAC adsorption was coupled. Based on the superior performance of the CNT membrane with pretreatment, the CNT membrane is suggested to be a robust system for a high concentration of organic matter pond water treatment without membrane flux decline. 34. Need for a fresh look at phosphorus management in wastewater treatment: Trash to treasure.

Abstract

The article discusses the fertigation process as first step in phosphorus reclamation and further elaborates ion-exchange process which can be retrofitted to existing wastewater treatment plantations. It mentions that the focus for such processes is the elimination of phosphorus in effluent stream. It notes that removal of phosphorus should involve capturing the reusing it. It also emphasizes that ion exchange can be retrofitted to wastewater treatment plants.
