A 1.5‐year‐old male neutered, 5 kg, Dachshund was referred for anorexia and vomiting for several days' duration. Radiographs revealed concern for a small intestinal obstruction. Ultrasonography revealed a severely distended segment of jejunum containing echogenic fluid that abruptly narrowed, twisted, and transitioned into normal jejunum, along with the presence of a distinct "whirl sign" that resulted from the intestinal segments twisting around themselves. This, in addition to the absence of flow on power Doppler interrogation, was compatible with a focal jejunal torsion‐volvulus. The torsion‐volvulus was surgically confirmed, a resection and anastomosis was performed, and the dog recovered uneventfully. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Double aortic arch (DAA) is a rare, congenital anomaly in small animals, resulting in a complete vascular ring encircling the esophagus and trachea, and subsequent compression of these organs. Few studies have reported utilizing CT angiography (CTA) for diagnosing DAA in dogs; thus, the imaging features are currently lacking in the literature. The objectives of this retrospective, multicenter, descriptive case series were to report the clinical and CTA characteristics of DAA in surgically treated cases. Medical records and CTA images were reviewed. Six juvenile dogs met the inclusion criteria (median age: 4.2 months; range: 2–5 months). The most common clinical signs included chronic regurgitation (100%), decreased body condition (67%), and coughing (50%). Common CTA features of DAA included a dominant left aortic arch (median diameter: 8.1 mm) and minor right aortic arch (median diameter: 4.3 mm; 83%), an aberrant right subclavian artery arising directly from the right aortic arch (83%), segmental esophageal constriction (100%), and variable degrees of dilation cranial to the heart base, and marked tracheal luminal compression (median percent change: –55%; 100%) and leftward curvature of the trachea at the level of the bifurcation of the aortic arches (100%). All dogs underwent successful surgical correction with only minor postoperative complications. Due to the similarity of clinical and imaging characteristics described to that of other forms of vascular ring anomalies (VRA), CTA is vital for the specific diagnosis of DAA in dogs. A 2‐year‐old Boer doe was presented with respiratory distress and severe inspiratory dyspnea. Cervical and thoracic radiographs revealed a marked retropharyngeal soft tissue mass effect, several mineralized pharyngeal and retropharyngeal structures, and a pulmonary mass. Computed tomography (CT) revealed a severely enlarged right medial retropharyngeal lymph node, which caused laryngeal compression, leading to upper airway obstruction. Multiple cervical and thoracic lymph nodes, and the pulmonary mass had an irregular layered/laminated pattern of mineralization. Imaging findings were consistent with caseous lymphadenitis, and further confirmed with culture, necropsy, and histopathology. A 7‐week‐old male pig was presented with signs of a central nervous system disorder. An MRI of the head and cervical spine was performed immediately after euthanasia. The MRI revealed multifocal bilaterally symmetric T2‐weighted hyperintense lesions in the brain and spinal cord, likely due to a toxic metabolic process. Histopathological examination supported the MRI findings and confirmed the diagnosis of edema disease due to Shiga‐like toxin produced by Escherichia coli. A 10‐month‐old German Shepherd Dog presented for evaluation of intermittent vomiting. Abdominal radiographs revealed a marked right cranial mass effect. Initial differentials included abscess/cyst or less likely neoplasia from undetermined origin. On abdominal ultrasound the mass appeared cystic and thin walled. Computed tomography revealed a large cystic lesion originating from the pyloroduodenal junction causing pyloric outflow obstruction. A noncommunicating duodenal duplication cyst was found on exploratory laparotomy and further confirmed with histopathology and immunohistochemistry. Enteric duplication cyst should be considered as a differential in young dogs with gastrointestinal signs and a cystic abdominal mass detected with different imaging modalities. OBJECTIVE To investigate the frequency at which cystine and urate cystoliths (stones) are visible on radiographs prior to surgical or nonsurgical retrieval. METHODS Records of client-owned dogs (n = 331) were analyzed between January 2019 and December 2023 for cystoliths submitted for stone analysis after surgical removal or nonsurgical retrieval. Records were analyzed for cystolith type; when cystine or urate stones were identified, records were analyzed for signalment, procedure, presence of mineral opaque cystoliths on pre-procedural radiographs, urine pH and crystalluria, history of previous cystoliths, prior prescription diet attempt, recurrence, and genetic, congenital and acquired comorbidities. Descriptive statistics were RESULTS (100%) of urate/cystine were visible on radiographs. generated after data collection. 31 of 331 (9%) were cystine stones, 49 of 331 (15%) were urate, and 1 of 331 (0.3%) was a mix of urate and cystine. When radiographs were taken prior to stone removal, 24 of 28 (85%) of urate, 24 of 26 (92%) of cystine, and 1 of 1 CONCLUSIONS Cystine and urate stones are visible on survey radiography at a high frequency in dogs. CLINICAL RELEVANCE While cystine and urate stones have been historically designated as radiolucent, they are frequently radiopaque on radiographs. Radiopacity is commonly used as one of the criterion to determine whether a dissolution or preven- tion diet is an appropriate management technique, particularly when determination of the stone type has yet to be performed. As a result, these findings may prompt clinicians to investigate other patient-specific factors before a specific dietary recommendation is made. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A case study of 3-week-old sexually intact male Brahman twin calf is presented for evaluation of an enlarged scrotum to the Food Animal Reproduction and Medicine Service, College of Veterinary Medicine, University of Florida. Topics include examines the farm reported that at birth, assistance was required as the twins were delivered vaginally and the calves were tubed with colostrum replacer initially and remained in a pasture with the dam.

A case study of a 6-year-old neutered male mixed-breed dog was presented to the University of Florida Small Animal Hospital for evaluation of possible mechanical obstruction. Topics include physical examination revealed palpable dilated loops of the intestine with no overt foreign bodies or masses; and radiographic and ultrasound findings were concerning for small intestinal mechanical obstruction with gravel sign.

Case Summary: A 10-month-old male domestic shorthair cat presented for surgical treatment of a congenital portosystemic shunt. The cat had a history of lethargy and ptyalism. Pre- and postprandial bile acids were markedly elevated. CT was performed, which revealed a single, congenital, left gastrophrenic, extrahepatic portosystemic shunt. A minimally invasive surgical approach was considered by transjugular percutaneous coil embolization of the venous shunt, which was performed without complications. Follow-up protein C and serum biochemical analyses were performed at 1, 2 and 5 months postoperatively, and were improved. The cat is alive and clinically normal 11 months postoperatively., Relevance and Novel Information: This is the first report of percutaneous transvenous coil embolization for the treatment of an extrahepatic portosystemic shunt in a cat. Toy breed dogs are overrepresented for atlantoaxial instability. Radiography is a standard diagnostic test, however published toy breed-specific radiographic measurements are lacking and diagnosis remains largely subjective. Aims of this retrospective, diagnostic accuracy study were to describe normal values and determine whether some quantitative radiographic criteria strongly support a diagnosis of atlantoaxial instability specific to toy breed dogs. Neutral lateral and ventrodorsal radiographs of 102 toy breed dogs (92 control, 10 affected) were reviewed. The median C1-C2 overlap (the distance of overlap between the C2 spinous process and the dorsal arch of C1) was +4.65 mm in control dogs and -5.00 mm in atlantoaxial instability cases. A C1-C2 overlap ≤ +1.55 mm was the most sensitive (100%) and specific (94.5%) radiographic measurement in the diagnosis of atlantoaxial instability. Three relative measurements were performed: the ventral atlantodental interval to dorsal atlantodental interval ratio, the dens/C2 ratio, and the C1-C2 angle. These three relative measurements had good specificity (94.5, 86.9, and 98.9%, respectively), lower sensitivity (80.0, 66.7, and 60.0%, respectively), and were not influenced by body weight (P > 0.05). Absolute measurements (including absolute dens length and atlantoaxial distance) were significantly correlated with body weight (P < 0.05) diminishing their utility in the diagnosis of atlantoaxial instability. Decreased C1-C2 overlap strongly supports atlantoaxial instability. The ventral atlantodental interval/dorsal atlantodental interval ratio, dens/C2 ratio, and C1-C2 angle may provide further support but may be normal in individual cases., (© 2018 American College of Veterinary Radiology.)
