Background and study aims Endoscopic ultrasound-guided through-the-needle biopsy (TTNB) of pancreatic cystic lesions (PCLs) is associated with a non-negligible risk for adverse events (AEs). We aimed to identify the hierarchic interaction among independent predictors for TTNB-related AEs and to generate a prognostic model using recursive partitioning analysis (RPA). Patients and methods Multicenter retrospective analysis of 506 patients with PCLs who underwent TTNB. RPA of predictors for AEs was performed and the model was validated by means of bootstrap resampling. Results Mean cysts size was 36.7mm. Most common diagnoses were intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasm (IPMN, 45%), serous cystadenoma (18.8%), and mucinous cystadenoma (12.8%). Fifty-eight (11.5%) AEs were observed. Lago Yehuin, a WNW-ESE elongated basin located in the outer fold-and-thrust belt of the Fuegian Andes, occupies a compartmented structural depression originated along a segment of the left-lateral Lago Deseado fault system. This paper describes the first geophysical survey performed within the lake. New acquired high-resolution single-channel seismic data, integrated with geological information in the surroundings of the Lago Yehuin, allowed to: (i) produce a complete bathymetric map of the lake, (ii) reconstruct the basement surface of the lake, and (iii) analyze the geometry, distribution, and thickness of the sedimentary infill. Two sub-basins were recognized within Lago Yehuin: A western sub-basin, 7.5 km long, with a maximum depth of 118 m; an eastern sub-basin, 7.2 km long with a maximum depth of 80 m. Both sub-basins are limited by a set of normal faults which overprint NE-verging thrusts. Adaptation of yeast cells to hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) leads to a rapid change in membrane permeability accompanied by a decrease of membrane fluidity and the alteration of its lipid composition, allowing cells to survive to higher doses of H2O2. During adaptation to H2O2 several genes that contain the regulatory element UASINO, and which codify for enzymes involved in phospholipid and fatty acid metabolism, are repressed. This repression is due to the translocation into the nucleus of the endoplasmic reticulum-bound transcriptional repressor Opi1p. However, the mechanisms of regulation of this translocation regulated by H2O2 are still unknown. Oxidation of particular cysteine residues in proteins by H2O2 is involved in signaling cascades that culminate in the regulation of transcription. Opi1p has in its structure four cysteine residues that may be targets of oxidation. Such oxidation might be responsible for the H2O2-dependent translocation of Opi1p to the nucleus and subsequent transcriptional repression of target genes. Opi1p oxidation when cells were exposed to adaptive doses of H2O2 was confirmed by a protein electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE), after tagging oxidized protein cysteine sulphydryl groups with methoxy-polyethylene glycolmaleimide (MAL-PEG). To determine whether Opi1p cysteine residues are responsible for H2O2-mediated translocation of Opi1p to the nucleus, yeast strains with individual mutations in cysteine residues were prepared (cysteine to alanine substitutions). These mutations did not compromise the function of Opi1p as a transcriptional repressor since all cells presented similar levels of expression of a reporter gene containing UASINO. As expected, the wild-type strain displayed Opi1p mainly in the endoplasmic reticulum, which translocated to the nucleus in the presence of H2O2. In clear contrast, Opi1p translocation to the nucleus in cells treated with H2O2 was impaired in the C159A mutant, with Opi1p being equally distributed in the periphery and inside the nucleus. Los hidratos de gas son compuestos cristalinos donde una molécula de gas, principalmente metano, queda atrapada en una red de moléculas de agua en forma de hielo. La importancia de los hidratos de gas en la naturaleza es muy alta ya que constituye una fuente alternativa de energía y a su vez juegan un papel importante en el delicado equilibrio del clima a nivel global y en los riesgos geológicos en el ámbito marino. La acción COST MIGRATE está diseñada con el fin de integrar la experiencia de un gran número de grupos de investigación europeos y agentes del sector para promover el desarrollo de conocimientos multidisciplinarios sobre el potencial de los hidratos de gas como fuente de energía en Europa. Dos de los objetivos de esta acción son realizar un inventario europeo de hidratos de gas explotables y evaluar los riesgos ambientales. En este trabajo se muestran los principales indicios de hidratos de gas en los márgenes europeos incluida la Península Ibérica, con una primera aproximación sobre el espesor y situación de la zona de estabilidad de hidratos de gas en el margen Ibérico. Gas hydrates are crystalline compounds where a molecule of gas, mainly methane, is trapped in a cage of icewater molecules. The importance of gas hydrates in nature is very high because it is an alternative source of energy and play a major role in the delicate balance of the global climate and in the marine geological risks. MIGRATE COST action is designed to integrate the experience of a large number of European research groups and industrial players to promote the development of multidisciplinary knowledge on the potential of gas hydrates as energy resource in Europe. Two of the objectives of the action aim to estimate the European inventory of exploitable gas hydrates and to assess environmental risks. In this work we show the occurrences of gas hydrates described in European margins including the Iberian Peninsula, with a first approximation on the thickness and location of the area of stability of gas hydrates in the Iberian margin. Lago Fagnano, an E-W elongated basin located in the central part of Isla Grande de Tierra del Fuego, occupies a structural depression originated along a segment of the Magallanes-Fagnano fault system. Its evolution was mostly conditioned by tectonic processes, and later was affected by glacial and glacio-lacustrine depositional events. New high-resolution single-channel seismic data, integrated with previous seismic profiles, and geological information acquired in the surroundings of the Lago Fagnano, allows us reconstructing the basement surface of the lake, and the geometry, distribution, and thickness of the glacial and glacio-lacustrine sequences. We recognized three main sub-basins within the Lago Fagnano: 1. a medium-size (ca. 21x5 km), deep (373 m), and asymmetric basin to the east; 2. an E-W trending (44x3 km), shallower (150 m) central sub-basin; and 3. a smaller (3.5x1.3 km), shallow (128 m) sub-basin to the west. The isopach sediment map shows that the most pronounced deposition occurred along the E-W axis of the lake, with a gradual increase in thickness towards east (from 100 to 150 m). The glacial deposits are widespread along the basin. The lacustrine sediments are preferentially localized along the E-W axis of the lake filling topographic lows. The shape of the sub-basins and their location in relation with the Magallanes-Fagnano fault system, along with the distribution, geometry, and thickness of the sedimentary units, show that the general morphology of the Lago Fagnano was mostly controlled by pre-existing and syntectonic features. Based on the structural data observed in the outcrops around the Lago Fagnano and the geophysical data, we proposed that the lake is composed by 4 amalgamated pull-apart sub-basins.

New geophysical data (bathymetry, electrical resistivity tomography and seismic profiles) show the structural and morphological characteristic of the Peninsula Ushuaia structural high. The bathymetry and seismic data show that the structural high is bordered by two troughs controlled by the E-W Beagle channel strike-slip fault system and a NW-SE extensional system. Electrical resistivity tomography profiles allow us to identify similar oriented meso-scale structures onshore at the Peninsula Ushuaia. Objective/methods: ALARM-HF was an in-hospital observational survey that included 4953 patients admitted for acute heart failure (AHF) in six European countries, Mexico and Australia. This article is a secondary analysis of the survey which evaluates differences in clinical phenotype, treatment regimens and in-hospital outcomes in AHF patients with diabetes mellitus (DM) compared to non-diabetics. The data were collected retrospectively by the investigators, and the diagnosis of AHF (reported at discharge) was based on the definition and classification of ESC guidelines, while the diagnosis of DM was based on medical record (past medical and medication history). Results: This sub-analysis demonstrates substantial differences regarding both baseline features and in-hospital outcome among diabetic and non-diabetic AHF patients. Diabetic patients (n = 2229, 45%) presented more frequently with acute pulmonary edema (p < 0.001) than non-diabetics, had more often acute coronary syndrome (p < 0.001) as precipitating factors of AHF, and multiple comorbidities such as renal dysfunction (p < 0.001), arterial hypertension (p < 0.001), anemia (p < 0.001) and peripheral vascular disease (p < 0.001). All-cause in-hospital mortality of diabetics was higher compared to non-diabetics (11.7% vs 9.8%, p = 0.01). The multivariate analysis revealed that older age (p = 0.032), systolic blood pressure < 100 mm Hg (p < 0.001), acute coronary syndrome and non compliance as precipitating factors (p = 0.05 and p = 0.005, respectively), history of arterial hypertension (p = 0.022), LVEF < 50% (p < 0.001), serum creatinine > 1.5 mg/dl (p = 0.029), absence of life saving therapies such as ACE inhibitors/ARBs (p < 0.001) and beta-blockers (p = 0.014) at admission, as well as absence of interventional treatment by PCI (p < 0.001), were independently associated with adverse in-hospital outcome. Conclusion: Diabetics with AHF have higher in-hospital mortality than non-diabetics despite their intensive treatment regimens (regarding care for HF and ACS), possibly due to underlying ischemic heart disease and the presence of multiple comorbidities. © 2011 Elsevier Ireland Ltd. AimsAcute pulmonary oedema (APE) is the second, after acutely decompensated chronic heart failure (ADHF), most frequent form of acute heart failure (AHF). This subanalysis examines the clinical profile, prognostic factors, and management of APE patients (n = 1820, 36.7) included in the Acute Heart Failure Global Survey of Standard Treatment (ALARM-HF). Methods and resultsALARM-HF included a total of 4953 patients hospitalized for AHF in Europe, Latin America, and Australia. The final diagnosis was made at discharge, and patients were classified according to European Society of Cardiology guidelines. Patients with APE had higher in-hospital mortality (7.4 vs. 6.0, P = 0.057) compared with ADHF patients (n = 1911, 38.5), and APE patients exhibited higher systolic blood pressures (P < 0.001) at admission and higher left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF, P < 0.01) than those with ADHF. These patients also had a higher prevalence of diabetes (P < 0.01), arterial hypertension (P < 0.001), peripheral vascular disease (P < 0.001), and chronic renal disease (P < 0.05). A Educação em Ciência deve ser orientada numa perspectiva de Desenvolvimento Sustentável. O trabalho que se apresenta insere-se nesta perspectiva e teve como objecto de estudo questões ambientais e biodiversidade do Barrocal e da Serra Algarvia, áreas abrangidas pela Rede Natura 2000 e muito afectadas por factores humanos (construção, desertificação, incêndios). O trabalho realizou-se com alunos do 3º ciclo do Ensino Básico de uma Escola do Algarve, no âmbito do Clube de Ciências Implementaram-se actividades de carácter prático centradas no aluno, pretendendo-se desenvolver a capacidade de resolução de problemas, tomada de decisão e atitudes consentâneas com o Desenvolvimento Sustentável.
