HoNiSi$_{3}$ is an intermetallic compound characterized by two successive antiferromagnetic transitions at $T_{N1} = 6.3$ K and $T_{N2} = 10.4$ K. Here, its zero-field microscopic magnetic structure is inferred from resonant x-ray magnetic diffraction experiments on a single crystalline sample that complement previous bulk magnetic susceptibility data. For $T < T_{N2}$, the primitive magnetic unit cell matches the chemical cell. The magnetic structure features ferromagnetic {\it ac} planes stacked in an antiferromagnetic $\uparrow \downarrow \uparrow \downarrow$ pattern. For $T_{N1} < T < T_{N2}$, the ordered magnetic moment points along $\vec{a}$, and for $T < T_{N1}$ a component along $\vec{c}$ also orders. We analyze the electronic structure of topological surface states in the family of magnetic topological insulators MnBi$_{2n}$Te$_{3n+1}$. We show that, at natural-cleavage surfaces, the Dirac cone warping changes its symmetry from hexagonal to trigonal at the magnetic ordering temperature. In particular, an energy splitting develops between the surface states of same band index but opposite surface momenta upon formation of the long-range magnetic order. As a consequence, measurements of such energy splittings constitute a simple protocol to detect the magnetic ordering via the surface electronic structure, alternative to the detection of the surface magnetic gap. Interestingly, while the latter signals a nonzero surface magnetic flux, the trigonal warping predicted here is, in addition, sensitive to the direction of the surface magnetic flux.

We present a minimal model that provides a description of the magnetic and thermodynamic properties of \Eu. The model contains two exchange coupling parameters, which are calculated using Density Functional Theory, and a local easy axis magnetic anisotropy term. The classical ground state of the system is a generalization of the well known 120$^\circ$ structure observed in triangular antiferromagnets. Monte Carlo simulations show two phase transitions as a function of the temperature. With increasing temperature, the system transitions from the ground state into a high-entropy collinear antiferromagnet, which in turn at higher temperatures presents a second order transition to a paramagnetic state. A high enough external magnetic field parallel to the anisotropy axis produces a spin-flop transition at low temperatures. The field also reduces the temperature range of stability of the collinear antiferromagnet phase and leads to a single phase transition as a function of the temperature. The reported behavior of the specific heat, the magnetization, and the magnetic susceptibility is in agreement with the available experimental data. BaBiO$_3$ is a charged ordered Peierls-like perovskite well known for its superconducting properties upon K or Pb doping. We present a study on the transport and electronic properties of BaBiO$_3$ perovskite with strong Bi-deficiency. We show that it is possible to synthesize BaBiO$_3$ thin layers with Bi-vacancies above 8-10% by depositing an yttrium-stabilized zirconia capping layer. By combining transport measurements with ab initio calculations we propose an scenario where the Bi-vacancies give rise to the formation of polarons and suggest that the electrical transport is dominated by the migration of these polarons trapped at Bi$^{3+}$ sites. Our work shows that cation vacancies engineering -- hardly explored to date -- appears as a promising pathway to tune the electronic and functional properties of perovskites.

The recent discovery of 2D superconductivity at the interface of BaPbO$_3$ (BPO) and BaBiO$_3$ (BBO) has motivated us to study in depth the electronic and structural properties and the relation between them in this particular heterostructure, by means of first-principles calculations. Our results indicate that the breathing distortions, the charge ordering and the semiconducting behaviour that characterize the parent compound BBO in its bulk form, are preserved at the innermost layers of the BBO side of the BPO/BBO bilayer. On the other hand, at the interface, there is a partial breaking of the breathing distortions with a concomitant charge transfer between the interfacial Bi ions and the on top BPO layer. We show that two types of carriers coexist at the interface, the delocalized 3D like sp states coming from Pb ions and the quasi 2D s states from the Bi ones. We obtain a substantial electron-phonon coupling between the 2D Bi states with the interfacial stretching phonon mode and a large density of states that can explain the critical temperature experimentally observed bellow 3.5 K. We hope these findings will motivate future research to explore different interfaces with charge ordered semiconductors as BBO in order to trigger this fascinating 2D behavior.

We compute the magnetocaloric effect (MCE) in the GdTX (T=Sc, Ti, Co, Fe; X=Si, Ge) compounds as a function of the temperature and the external magnetic field. To this end we use a density functional theory approach to calculate the exchange-coupling interactions between Gd$^{3+}$ ions on each compound. We consider a simplified magnetic Hamiltonian and analyze the dependence of the exchange couplings on the transition metal T, the p-block element X, and the crystal structure (CeFeSi-type or CeScSi-type). The most significant effects are observed for the replacements Ti $\to$ Sc or Fe $\to$ Co which have an associated change in the parity of the electron number in the 3d level. These replacements lead to an antiferromagnetic contribution to the magnetic couplings that reduces the Curie temperature and can even lead to an antiferromagnetic ground state. We solve the magnetic models through mean field and Monte Carlo calculations and find large variations among compounds in the magnetic transition temperature and in the magnetocaloric effect, in agreement with the available experimental data. The magnetocaloric effect shows a universal behavior as a function of temperature and magnetic field in the ferromagnetic compounds after a scaling of the relevant energy scales by the Curie temperature $T_C$., Comment: 18 pages, 5 figures

We present a theoretical analysis of the magnetic phase diagram of CeTi$_{1-x}$Sc$_{x}$Ge and GdFe$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$Si as a function of the temperature and the Sc and Co concentration $x$, respectively. CeScGe and GdCoSi, as many other RTX (R=rare earth, T=transition metal, X=p-block element) compounds, present a tetragonal crystal structure where bilayers of R are separated by layers of T and X. While GdFeSi and CeTi$_{0.75}$Sc$_{0.25}$Ge are ferromagnetic, CeScGe and GdCoSi order antiferromagnetically with the R 4f magnetic moments on the same bilayer aligned ferromagnetically and magnetic moments in nearest neighbouring bilayers aligned antiferromagnetically. The antiferromagnetic transition temperature $T_N$ decreases with decreasing concentration $x$ in both compounds and for low enough values of $x$ the compounds show a ferromagnetic behavior. Based on these observations we construct a simplified model Hamiltonian that we solve numerically for the specific heat and the magnetization. We find a good qualitative agreement between the model and the experimental data. Our results show that the main magnetic effect of the Sc $\to$ Ti and Co $\to$ Fe substitution in these compounds is consistent with a change in the sign of the exchange coupling between magnetic moments in neighbouring bilayers. In a recent work by Ji Seop Oh et al., BaBiO3(001) thin films were grown on SrTiO3 by Pulsed Laser Deposition. It was argued that the films are BiO2-terminated from the modelling of angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy experiments. The authors claim, in opposition to previous theoretical predictions, that there are no metallic surface states on their films. In this short comment we question that the authors have enough evidence to make such a claim, as we consider that the large mismatch between SrTiO3 and BaBiO3 and the lack of control of their fabrication process with reflection high energy electron difraction could unlikely give high quality films with a single BiO2- termination, which is one of the requisites for the stabilization of these surface metallic states.

We report detailed thermal expansion and magnetostriction experiments on GdCoIn$_5$ and GdRhIn$_5$ single crystal samples that show a sudden change in the dilation at a field B$^\ast$ for temperatures below the N\'eel transition temperature TN. We present a first-principles model including crystal-field effects, dipolar and exchange interactions, and the dependence of the exchange couplings with lattice distortions in order to fully account for the magnetostriction and magnetic susceptibility data. The mean-field solution of the model shows that a transition between metastable states occurs at the field B$^\ast$. It also indicates that two degenerate phases coexist in the sample at temperatures below TN. This allows to explain the lack of observation, in high resolution x-ray experiments, of an orthorhombic distortion at the N\'eeel transition even though the magnetic structure breaks the tetragonal symmetry and the magnetoelastic coupling is significant. These conclusions could be extended to other tetragonal Gd-based compounds that present the same phenomenology., Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures

There is consensus on the fact that one of the main limitations of the Li air batteries (LABs) is the insulating character of Li$_{2}$O$_{2}$ and that it becomes crucial to explore new conduction paths. Recent studies indicate that doping with chloride increases the ion conductivity of Li$_{2}$O$_{2}$, although to a much lesser extent than expected if chloride is assumed as a donor dopant [Gerbig et al., Adv. Mater.,2013, 25, 3129]. Subsequently, it has been shown that the addition of lithium chloride, LiCl, to the battery electrolyte increases its discharge capacity while this effect is not observed with other halogens [Matsuda et al., J. Phys. Chem. C, 2016, 120, 13360]. This fact was attributed to an increase in the conductivity of Cl-doped Li$_{2}$O$_{2}$, but still the responsible mechanism is not clear. In this work, we have performed first principle calculations to study the effect of the different halogens (F, Cl, Br, I) as substitutional defects in the electronic and transport properties of Li$_{2}$O$_{2}$. We have calculated the formation energies of the different defects and impurities and we analysed how they affect the activation barriers and diffusion coefficients . We have demonstrated that the chloride does not behave like a donor dopant, thus explaining the meager increase of the ionic conductivity experimentally observed neither it promotes the polaron formation and its mobility. We have also found that chloride does not present any special behaviour among the halogen series. Our results reveal that all the studied configurations associated with the halogen defects do not derive in metallic states nor extra polarons that would increase considerably the electronic conductivity. This is mainly due to the ionic characteristics of the Li$_{2}$O$_{2}$ crystal and the capability of the oxygen dimers to adapt its valence rather than to the nature of the dopant itself., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures

We present an implementation of the rotationally invariant slave boson technique as an impurity solver for density functional theory plus dynamical mean field theory (DFT+DMFT). Our approach provides explicit relations between quantities in the local correlated subspace treated with DMFT and the Bloch basis used to solve the DFT equations. In particular, we present an expression for the mass enhancement of the quasiparticle states in reciprocal space. We apply the method to the study of the electronic correlations in Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ under anisotropic strain. We find that the spin-orbit coupling plays a crucial role in the mass enhancement differentiation between the quasi-one-dimensional $\alpha$ and $\beta$ bands, and on its momentum dependence over the Fermi surface. The mass enhancement, however, is only weakly affected by either uniaxial or biaxial strain, even across the Lifshitz transition induced by the strain.

We present a systematic investigation of the special twist method introduced by Rajagopal $\textit{et al.}$ [ Phys. Rev. B 51, 10591 (1995) ] for reducing finite-size effects in correlated calculations of periodic extended systems with Coulomb interactions and Fermi statistics. We propose a procedure for finding special twist values which, at variance with previous applications of this method, reproduce the energy of the mean-field infinite-size limit solution within an adjustable (arbitrarily small) numerical error. This choice of the special twist is shown to be the most accurate single-twist solution for curing one-body finite-size effects in correlated calculations. For these reasons we dubbed our procedure "exact special twist" (EST). EST only needs a fully converged independent-particles or mean-field calculation within the primitive cell and a simple fit to find the special twist along a specific direction in the Brillouin zone. We first assess the performances of EST in a simple correlated model such as the 3D electron gas. Afterwards, we test its efficiency within $\textit{ab initio}$ quantum Monte Carlo simulations of metallic elements of increasing complexity. We show that EST displays an overall good performance in reducing finite-size errors comparable to the widely used twist average technique but at a much lower computational cost, since it involves the evaluation of just one wavefunction. We also demonstrate that the EST method shows similar performances in the calculation of correlation functions, such as the ionic forces for structural relaxation and the pair radial distribution function in liquid hydrogen. Our conclusions point to the usefulness of EST for correlated supercell calculations, our method will be particularly relevant when the physical problem under consideration requires large periodic cells., Comment: 15 pages, 8 figures

We analyze the nature of Mott metal-insulator transition in multiorbital systems using dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT). The auxiliary multiorbital quantum impurity problem is solved using continuous time quantum Monte Carlo (CTQMC) and the rotationally invariant slave-boson (RISB) mean field approximation. We focus our analysis on the Kanamori Hamiltonian and find that there are two markedly different regimes determined by the nature of the lowest energy excitations of the atomic Hamiltonian. The RISB results at $T\to0$ suggest the following rule of thumb for the order of the transition at zero temperature: a second order transition is to be expected if the lowest lying excitations of the atomic Hamiltonian are charge excitations, while the transition tends to be first order if the lowest lying excitations are in the same charge sector as the atomic ground state. At finite temperatures the transition is first order and its strength, as measured e.g. by the jump in the quasiparticle weight at the transition, is stronger in the parameter regime where the RISB method predicts a first order transition at zero temperature. We analyze theoretically a common experimental process used to obtain the magnetic contribution to the specific heat of a given magnetic material. In the procedure, the specific heat of a non-magnetic analog is measured and used to subtract the non-magnetic contributions, which are generally dominated by the lattice degrees of freedom in a wide range of temperatures. We calculate the lattice contribution to the specific heat for the magnetic compounds GdMIn$_5$ (M = Co, Rh) and for the non-magnetic YMIn$_5$ and LaMIn$_5$ (M = Co, Rh), using density functional theory based methods. We find that the best non-magnetic analog for the subtraction depends on the magnetic material and on the range of temperatures. While the phonon specific heat contribution of YRhIn$_5$ is an excellent approximation to the one of GdCoIn$_5$ in the full temperature range, for GdRhIn$_5$ we find a better agreement with LaCoIn$_5$, in both cases, as a result of an optimum compensation effect between masses and volumes. We present measurements of the specific heat of the compounds GdMIn$_5$ (M = Co, Rh) up to room temperature where it surpasses the value expected from the Dulong-Petit law. We obtain a good agreement between theory and experiment when we include anharmonic effects in the calculations.

We present the TRIQS/DFTTools package, an application based on the TRIQS library that connects this toolbox to realistic materials calculations based on density functional theory (DFT). In particular, TRIQS/DFTTools together with TRIQS allows an efficient implementation of DFT plus dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT) calculations. It supplies tools and methods to construct Wannier functions and to perform the DMFT self-consistency cycle in this basis set. Post-processing tools, such as band-structure plotting or the calculation of transport properties are also implemented. The package comes with a fully charge self-consistent interface to the Wien2k band structure code, as well as a generic interface that allows to use TRIQS/DFTTools together with a large variety of DFT codes. In the present work, we study the magnetic properties of the NbS2 monolayer by first-principles calculations. The transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDC) are a family of laminar materials presenting exciting properties such as charge density waves (CDW), superconductivity and metal-insulating transitions among others. 2H-NbS2 is a particular case within the family, because it is the only one that is superconductor without exhibiting a CDW order. Although no long range magnetic order was experimentally observed in the TMDC, we show here that the single monolayer of NbS2 is on the verge of a spin density wave (SDW) phase. Our calculations indicate that a wave-like magnetic order is stabilized in the NbS2 monolayer in the presence of magnetic defects or within zig-zag nanoribbons, due to the presence of unpaired electrons. We calculate the real part of the bare electronic susceptibilty and the corresponding nesting function of the clean NbS2 monolayer, showing that there are strong electronic instabilities at the same wavevector asociated with the calculated SDWs, also corresponding with one of the main nesting vectors of the Fermi surface. We conclude that the physical mechanism behind the spin-wave instabilities are the nesting properties, accentuated by the quasi 2D character of this system, and the rather strong Coulomb interactions of the 4d band of the Nb atom. We also estimate the amplitude of the spin-fluctuations and find that they are rather large, as expected for a system on the verge of a quantum critical transition.

The presence of 2D electron gases at surfaces or interfaces in oxide thin films remains a hot topic in condensed matter physics. In particular, BaBiO3 appears as a very interesting system as it was theoretically proposed that its (001) surface should become metallic if a Bi-termination is achieved (Vildosola et al., PRL 110, 206805 (2013)). Here we report on the preparation by pulsed laser deposition and characterization of BaBiO3 thin films on silicon. We show that the texture of the films can be tuned by controlling the growth conditions, being possible to stabilize strongly (100)-textured films. We find significant differences on the spectroscopic and transport properties between (100)-textured and non-textured films. We rationalize these experimental results by performing first principles calculations, which indicate the existence of electron doping at the (100) surface. This stabilizes Bi ions in a 3+ state, shortens Bi-O bonds and reduces the electronic band gap, increasing the surface conductivity. Our results emphasize the importance of surface effects on the electronic properties of perovskites, and provide strategies to design novel oxide heterostructures with potential interface-related 2D electron gases., Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures. We assess the reliability of the one-crossing approximation (OCA) approach in quantitative description of the Mott transition in the framework of the dynamical mean field theory (DMFT). The OCA approach has been applied in the conjunction with DMFT to a number of heavy-fermion, actinide, transition metal compounds, and nanoscale systems. However, several recent studies in the framework of impurity models pointed out to serious deficiencies of OCA and raised questions regarding its reliability. Here we consider a single band Hubbard model on the Bethe lattice at finite temperatures and compare the results of OCA to those of a numerically exact quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) method. The temperature-local repulsion U phase diagram for the particle-hole symmetric case obtained by OCA is in good agreement with that of QMC, with the metal-insulator transition captured very well. We find, however, that the insulator to metal transition is shifted to higher values of U and, simultaneously, correlations in the metallic phase are significantly overestimated. This counter-intuitive behavior is due to simultaneous underestimations of the Kondo scale in the metallic phase and the size of the insulating gap. We trace the underestimation of the insulating gap to that of the second moment of the high-frequency expansion of the impurity spectral density. Calculations for the system away from the particle-hole symmetric case are also presented and discussed.

The discovery in 2001 of superconductivity in some heavy fermion compounds of the RMIn$_5$ (R=4f or 5f elements, M=Co, Rh, Ir) family, has triggered enormous amount of research pointing to understand the physical origin of superconductivity and its relation with magnetism. Although many properties have been clarified, there are still crutial questions that remain unanswered. One of these questions is the particular role of the transition metal in determining the value of critical superconducting temperature (Tc). In this work, we analyse an interesting regularity that is experimentally observed in this family of compounds, where the lowest N\'eel temperatures are obtained in the Co-based materials. We focus our analysis on the GdMIn$_5$ compounds and perform density-functional-theory based total-energy calculations to obtain the parameters for the exchange coupling interactions between the magnetic moments located at the Gd$^{3+}$ ions. Our calculations indicate that the ground state of the three compounds is a $C$-type antiferromagnet determined by the competition between the first- and second-neighbor exchange couplings inside GdIn$_3$ planes and stabilized by the couplings across MIn$_2$ planes. We then solve a model with these magnetic interactions using a mean-field approximation and Quantum Monte Carlo simulations. The results obtained for the calculated N\'eel and Curie-Weiss temperatures, the specific heat and the magnetic susceptibility are in very good agreement with the existent experimental data. Remarkably, we show that the first neighbor interplane exchange coupling in the Co-based material is much smaller than in the Rh and Ir analogues due to a more two dimensional behaviour in the former. This result explains the observed lower N\'eel temperature in Co-115 systems and may shed light on the fact that the Co-based 115 superconductors present the highest Tc., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures

A comprehensive experimental and theoretical study of the low temperature properties of GdCoIn$_5$ was performed. Specific heat, thermal expansion, magnetization and electrical resistivity were measured in good quality single crystals down to $^4$He temperatures. All the experiments show a second-order-like phase transition at 30 K probably associated with the onset of antiferromagnetic order. Total energy GGA+U calculations indicate a ground state with magnetic moments localized at the Gd ions and allowed a determination of the Gd-Gd magnetic interactions. Band structure calculations of the electron and phonon contributions to the specific heat and Quantum Monte Carlo calculations of the magnetic contributions to the thermodynamic quantities reproduce quite well the experimental data., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

In this work, we find by means of first principle calculations a new physical mechanism to generate a two dimensional electron gas, namely, the breaking of charge ordering at the surface of a charge ordered semiconductor due to the incomplete oxygen environment of the surface ions. The emergence of the 2D gas is independent of the presence of oxygen vacancies or polar discontinuities; this is a self-doping effect. This mechanism might apply to many charge ordered systems, in particular, we study the case of BaBiO3(001). In bulk, this material is a prototype of a "forbidden valence" compound in which the formal "metallic" Bi4+ state is skipped exhibiting a charge disproportionated Bi3+ - Bi5+ ordered structure. At room temperature, this charge disproportionation together with the breathing distortions gives rise to a Peierls semiconductor with monoclinic crystal structure. At higher temperature (T > 750 K) or upon doping, it turns cubic and metallic. Interestingly, doped BaBiO3 was one of the first non-cuprate high-Tc superconductors discovered. The outer layer of the Bi-terminated simulated surface turns more cubic- like and metallic while the inner layers remain in the insulating monoclinic state. On the other hand, the metallization does not occur for the Ba termination, a fact that makes this system appealing for nanostructuring. Finally, this finding sets another possible route for future exploration: the potential scenario of 2D superconductivity at the BaBiO3 surface.

We discover that hcp phases of Fe and Fe0.9Ni0.1 undergo an electronic topological transition at pressures of about 40 GPa. This topological change of the Fermi surface manifests itself through anomalous behavior of the Debye sound velocity, c/a lattice parameter ratio and M\"ossbauer center shift observed in our experiments. First-principles simulations within the dynamic mean field approach demonstrate that the transition is induced by many-electron effects. It is absent in one-electron calculations and represents a clear signature of correlation effects in hcp Fe.

We perform an electronic structure study for cerium oxide homogeneously-doped with cobalt impurities, focusing on the role played by oxygen vacancies and structural relaxation. By means of full-potential ab-initio methods, we explore the possibility of ferromagnetism as observed in recent experiments. Our results indicate that oxygen vacancies seem to be crucial for the appearance of a ferromagnetic alignment among Co impurities, obtaining an increasing tendency towards ferromagnetism with growing vacancy concentration. The estimated couplings cannot explain though, the experimentally observed room-temperature ferromagnetism. In this systematic study, we draw relevant conclusions regarding the location of the oxygen vacancies and the magnetic couplings involved. In particular, we find that oxygen vacancies tend to nucleate in the neighborhood of Co impurities and we get a remarkably strong ferromagnetic coupling between Co atoms and the Ce^{3+} neighboring ions. The calculated magnetic moments per cell depend on the degree of reduction which could explain the wide spread in the magnetization values observed in the experiments.

We present an approach that combines the local density approximation (LDA) and the dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT) in the framework of the full-potential linear augmented plane waves (FLAPW) method. Wannier-like functions for the correlated shell are constructed by projecting local orbitals onto a set of Bloch eigenstates located within a certain energy window. The screened Coulomb interaction and Hund's coupling are calculated from a first-principle constrained RPA scheme. We apply this LDA+DMFT implementation, in conjunction with continuous-time quantum Monte-Carlo, to study the electronic correlations in LaFeAsO. Our findings support the physical picture of a metal with intermediate correlations. The average value of the mass renormalization of the Fe 3d bands is about 1.6, in reasonable agreement with the picture inferred from photoemission experiments. The discrepancies between different LDA+DMFT calculations (all technically correct) which have been reported in the literature are shown to have two causes: i) the specific value of the interaction parameters used in these calculations and ii) the degree of localization of the Wannier orbitals chosen to represent the Fe 3d states, to which many-body terms are applied. The latter is a fundamental issue in the application of many-body calculations, such as DMFT, in a realistic setting. We provide strong evidence that the DMFT approximation is more accurate and more straightforward to implement when well-localized orbitals are constructed from a large energy window encompassing Fe-3d, As-4p and O-2p, and point out several difficulties associated with the use of extended Wannier functions associated with the low-energy iron bands. We estimate theoretically the strength of the local Coulomb interaction for the Fe 3d and Ce 4f shells in the REFeAsO compunds. In LaFeAsO and CeFeAsO we obtain values of the local Coulomb interaction parameter U for both Fe and Ce which are larger than those of elemental Fe and Ce metals. The Fe 3d bandwidth of REFeAsO is found to increase slightly as one moves along the RE-series. Using a combined local density approximation and dynamical mean-field theory (LDA+DMFT) approach, we study the behaviour of the localized 4f states along the rare-earth oxyarsenides REFeAsO series (RE=Ce,Pr,Nd). In CeFeAsO the occupied Ce 4f band is located just below the Fe 3d band leading possibly to a Kondo screening of the 4f local moment under applied pressure, while the unscreened local moment behaviour is expected for the Pr and Nd compounds., Comment: 7 pages, 2 figures, 1 table

We consider the role played by the 4f states in the rare-earth oxyarsenides REOFeAs (RE=Ce,Pr,Nd) and the oxyphosphate CeOFeP, using a first-principles technique that combines the local density approximation and dynamical mean-field theory (LDA+DMFT). In the Pr and Nd compounds, the 4f states are located well below and above the Fermi level E_F, and essentially do not interact with the iron 3d bands located near E_F, resulting in local moment behavior. In the Ce compounds, our results reveal a qualitatively different picture, with the 3d-4f hybridization being sufficiently strong to give rise to an observable Kondo screening of the local 4f moment. Our LDA+DMFT electronic structure calculations allow us to estimate the Kondo temperature T_K for both CeOFeP and CeOFeAs. For the phosphate, the order of magnitude of our estimate is consistent with the experimental observation of T_K around 10 K. At ambient pressure, T_K is found to be negligibly small for CeOFeAs. Under applied hydrostatic pressure, we predict an exponential increase of T_K which reaches values comparable to the superconducting T_c around 40 K at pressures above 10 GPa. We conjecture that the competition between the Kondo effect and superconductivity may be at the origin of the monotonous decrease of T_c observed in CeOFeAs under pressure. We argue that the quantitative aspects of this competition are inconsistent with a weak-coupling BCS description of the superconductivity in the oxyarsenides., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures

Some important aspects of the electronic structure of the iron oxypnictides depend very sensitively on small changes in interatomic distances and bond angles within the iron-pnictogen subunit. Using first-principles full-potential electronic structure calculations, we investigate this sensitive dependence, contrasting in particular LaOFeAs and LaOFeP. The width of the Fe-bands is significantly larger for LaOFeP, indicating a better metal and weaker electronic correlations. When calculated at their experimental crystal structure these two materials have significantly different low-energy band structure. The topology of the Fermi surface changes when going from LaOFeP to LaOFeAs, with a three-dimensional hole pocket present in the former case transforming into a tube with two-dimensional dispersion. We show that the low-energy band structure of LaOFeAs evolves towards that of LaOFeP as the As atom is lowered closer to the Fe plane with respect to its experimental position. The physical origin of this sensitivity to the iron-pnictogen distance is the covalency of the iron-pnictogen bond, leading to strong hybridization effects. To illustrate this, we construct Wannier functions, which are found to have a large spatial extension when the energy window is restricted to the bands with dominant iron character. Finally, we show that the Fe bandwidth slightly increases as one moves along the rare-earth series in ReOFeAs and discuss the physical origin of this effect., Comment: 10 pages, 9 figures

We calculate the Kondo temperature ($T_K$) and crystal-field levels of strongly correlated multiorbital systems solving the Anderson Impurity Model with the finite U Non-Crossing Approximation (UNCA) in its simplest scheme, that is, considering the self energies at lowest order in the 1/N diagrammatic expansion. We introduced an approximation to the vertex function that includes the double energy dependence and investigate its effect on the values of $T_K$ for simple electronic models. We also analyze the competition between the two spin flip mechanisms, involving virtual transitions to empty and doubly occupied states, in the determination of the ground state symmetry by including an extra diagram of higher order in $1/N.$ We finally combine the resulting simple formalism with {\it ab initio} calculated electronic structures to obtain $T_K$'s, ground states, and crystal field splittings in excellent agreement with experimental results for two particular Ce compounds, namely CeIn$_3$ and CeSn$_3$., Comment: 11 pages, 10 figures

The crystal-field splittings of the monopnictides and monochalcogenides of Cerium (CeX and CeY) and their alloys (CeX$_{1-x}$Y$_x$) are calculated by means of an \emph{ab initio} many-body combined technique. The hybridization functions of the 4f states of Cerium with the conduction band for each material are obtained from first principles within the local density approximation (LDA) and are used as input for the Anderson impurity model, which is solved within a multi-orbital Non-Crossing Approximation (NCA). This realistic theoretical approach (LDA-NCA) is able to reproduce the experimental results for the crystal-field splittings of the CeX and CeY series in agreement with previous theoretical calculations. It is also able to describe the non-linear evolution of the splittings in the CeX$_{1-x}$Y$_x$ alloys as a function of x. An analysis of the values of the crystal-field splittings in all the compounds can be done in depth in this contribution, due to a detailed knowledge of the band structure and crystal environment in combination with many-body physics., Comment: 6 pages, 6 figures, 1 table

The unusual and interesting physical properties of rare earth intemetallic compounds have their origin in the combination of strongly correlated 4f states and their hybridization with the conduction electron sea, which gives rise to their complex low temperature Kondo behavior. In particular, Ce compounds are very sensitive to the crystalline and chemical environment, as compared to other rare earth systems. The interaction of the 4f state with the conduction band plays an important role in the determination of the different magnetic, structural and transport properties of these systems. Among the cerium compounds, those of the type CeX, which crystallize in the rock salt structure, exhibit extremely unusual magnetic properties. By making use of the mixed LDA-NCA calculation technique we analyse the crystal-field splittings of CeX compounds (X=N, P, As, Sb, Bi). The obtained ab-initio hybridization functions are taken as imputs to calculate the crystal-field splittings within NCA (non crossing approximation) and the tendencies are contrasted with experiments. Among the Cerium compounds, the heavier monochalcogenides CeY (Y=S,Se,Te) of cerium provide a class of compounds which together with the heavier monopnictides CeX (X=N,P,As,Sb,Bi) exhibit extremely interesting physical properties. The hybridization of the partially delocalized f-electrons seems to be responsible for the unusual properties, in particular the magnetic ones which show great chemical sensitivity. As compared to the monopnictides, the monochalcogenides have an additional anion p-electron which shifts the Fermi energy into the p-region of the Cerium 5d-derived density of states, and which should affect the hybridization function of the electrons in the conduction band. In this contribution we analyze the 4f-hybridization function and the crystal-field splittings of the compounds under study.
