1. Controlling sensory analysis results: tools and importance in assessor selection. Case study: PROVA-ALABE proficiency test

Abstract: The PROVA-ALABE essay aims to characterize the olfactory, tactile and taste changes underlying the sensory evaluation of wines. It allows assessors to understand the extent to which their perception of a wine is harmonized with that of the other assessors in the trial, contributing to their qualification, as well as the corresponding panel, in detecting and recognizing the most prevalent defects in wines. This work aimed to provide a critical summary of outcomes achieved through interlaboratory tests to identify a primary defect in deliberately contaminated wines. Over three years, interlaboratory tests were performed, corresponding to 60 wines mainly altered with a specific compound. These tests aimed to identify different defects, such as mould, lactic, acescent, reduced, oxidized, vegetable, animal, acidic, bitter, astringency, and others (plastic, sulphur dioxide, bitter almond). However, wine's complexity introduces factors that can affect assessors' perception, with the same defect being perceived differently based on the panel's experience, training, and cultural backgrounds, which can be problematic for an objective analysis. Results of rejection rates and assessor identification percentages suggest that oxidation, mould, and animal defects are more easily recognized. Participation in interlaboratory tests is mandatory for accredited laboratories, serving as an interesting tool for demonstrating results consistency across sensory laboratories. Additionally, such participation can provide valuable information about assessors' performance.

Abstract: The Pandora Software Development Kit and algorithm libraries perform reconstruction of neutrino interactions in liquid argon time projection chamber detectors. Pandora is the primary event reconstruction software used at the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment, which will operate four large-scale liquid argon time projection chambers at the far detector site in South Dakota, producing high-resolution images of charged particles emerging from neutrino interactions. While these high-resolution images provide excellent opportunities for physics, the complex topologies require sophisticated pattern recognition capabilities to interpret signals from the detectors as physically meaningful objects that form the inputs to physics analyses. A critical component is the identification of the neutrino interaction vertex. Subsequent reconstruction algorithms use this location to identify the individual primary particles and ensure they each result in a separate reconstructed particle. A new vertex-finding procedure described in this article integrates a U-ResNet neural network performing hit-level classification into the multi-algorithm approach used by Pandora to identify the neutrino interaction vertex. The machine learning solution is seamlessly integrated into a chain of pattern-recognition algorithms. The technique substantially outperforms the previous BDT-based solution, with a more than 20\% increase in the efficiency of sub-1\,cm vertex reconstruction across all neutrino flavours., Comment: 32 pages, 18 figures

Abstract: The Mizohata-Takeuchi conjecture for the resolvent of the Navier-Lam\'e equation is a weighted estimate with weights in the so-called Mizohata-Takeuchi class for this operator when one approaches the spectrum (Limiting Absorption Principles). We prove this conjecture in dimensions 2 and 3 for weights with a radial majorant in the Mizohata-Takeuchi class. This result can be seen as an extension of the analogue for the Laplacian given in [8]. Abstract: Measurements at s=13.6TeV of the opposite-sign W boson pair production cross section in proton-proton collisions are presented. The data used in this study were collected with the CMS detector at the CERN LHC in 2022, and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 34.8fb−1. Events are selected by requiring one electron and one muon of opposite charge. A maximum likelihood fit is performed on signal- and background-enriched data categories defined by the flavor and charge of the leptons, the number of jets, and number of jets originating from b quarks. The overall sensitivity is significantly better than that of previous results with a similar integrated luminosity. The improvement comes from a more refined control of experimental uncertainties and an improved fit strategy. An inclusive W+W− production cross section of 125.7±5.6 pb is measured, in agreement with standard model predictions. Cross sections are also reported in a fiducial region close to that of the detector acceptance, both inclusively and differentially, as a function of the jet multiplicity in the event. For the first time in proton-proton collisions, WW events with zero, one, and at least two jets are studied simultaneously and compared with recent theoretical predictions.

Abstract: The Higgs boson (H) trilinear self-coupling, λ3, is constrained via its measured properties and limits on the HH pair production using the proton-proton collision data collected by the CMS experiment at s=13TeV. The combination of event categories enriched in single-H and HH events is used to measure κλ, defined as the value of λ3 normalized to its standard model prediction, while simultaneously constraining the Higgs boson couplings to fermions and vector bosons. Abstract: This Letter presents the first search for bottom quark associated production of the standard model Higgs boson, in final states with leptons. Higgs boson decays to pairs of tau leptons and pairs of leptonically decaying W bosons are considered. The search is performed using data collected from 2016 to 2018 by the CMS experiment in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138fb−1. Upper limits at the 95% confidence level are placed on the signal strength for Higgs boson production in association with bottom quarks; the observed (expected) upper limit is 3.7 (6.1) times the standard model prediction.

Abstract: Abstract : The results of a model-independent search for the pair production of new bosons within a mass range of 0.21 < m < 60 GeV, are presented. This study utilizes events with a four-muon final state. We use two data sets, comprising 41.5 fb−1 and 59.7 fb−1 of proton-proton collisions at $$ \sqrt{s} $$ s = 13 TeV, recorded in 2017 and 2018 by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC. The study of the 2018 data set includes a search for displaced signatures of a new boson within the proper decay length range of 0 < cτ < 100 mm. Our results are combined with a previous CMS result, based on 35.9 fb−1 of proton-proton collisions at $$ \sqrt{s} $$ s = 13 TeV collected in 2016. No significant deviation from the expected background is observed. Results are presented in terms of a model-independent upper limit on the product of cross section, branching fraction, and acceptance. The findings are interpreted across various benchmark models, such as an axion-like particle model, a vector portal model, the next-to-minimal supersymmetric standard model, and a dark supersymmetric scenario, including those predicting a non-negligible proper decay length of the new boson. In all considered scenarios, substantial portions of the parameter space are excluded, expanding upon prior results.

Abstract: Measurements of the polarization and spin correlation in top quark pairs ((Formula presented)) are presented using events with a single electron or muon and jets in the final state. The measurements are based on proton-proton collision data from the LHC at (Formula presented) collected by the CMS experiment, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of (Formula presented). All coefficients of the polarization vectors and the spin correlation matrix are extracted simultaneously by performing a binned likelihood fit to the data. The measurement is performed inclusively and in bins of additional observables, such as the mass of the (Formula presented) system and the top quark scattering angle in the (Formula presented) rest frame. The measured polarization and spin correlation are in agreement with the standard model. From the measured spin correlation, conclusions on the (Formula presented) spin entanglement are drawn by applying the Peres-Horodecki criterion. The standard model predicts entangled spins for (Formula presented) states at the production threshold and at high masses of the (Formula presented) system. Entanglement is observed for the first time in events at high (Formula presented) mass, where a large fraction of the (Formula presented) decays are spacelike separated, with an expected and observed significance of above 5 standard deviations.

Abstract: This paper describes the Combine software package used for statistical analyses by the CMS Collaboration. The package, originally designed to perform searches for a Higgs boson and the combined analysis of those searches, has evolved to become the statistical analysis tool presently used in the majority of measurements and searches performed by the CMS Collaboration. It is not specific to the CMS experiment, and this paper is intended to serve as a reference for users outside of the CMS Collaboration, providing an outline of the most salient features and capabilities. Readers are provided with the possibility to run Combine and reproduce examples provided in this paper using a publicly available container image. Since the package is constantly evolving to meet the demands of ever-increasing data sets and analysis sophistication, this paper cannot cover all details of Combine. However, the online documentation referenced within this paper provides an up-to-date and complete user guide.

Abstract: This proposal outlines the future plans of the Brazilian High-Energy Physics (HEP) community for upcoming collider experiments. With the construction of new particle colliders on the horizon and the ongoing operation of the High-Luminosity LHC, several research groups in Brazil have put forward technical proposals, covering both hardware and software contributions, as part of the Brazilian contribution to the global effort. Abstract: This paper introduces a novel track-length extension fitting algorithm for measuring the kinetic energies of inelastically interacting particles in liquid argon time projection chambers (LArTPCs). The algorithm finds the most probable offset in track length for a track-like object by comparing the measured ionization density as a function of position with a theoretical prediction of the energy loss as a function of the energy, including models of electron recombination and detector response. The algorithm can be used to measure the energies of particles that interact before they stop, such as charged pions that are absorbed by argon nuclei. The algorithm's energy measurement resolutions and fractional biases are presented as functions of particle kinetic energy and number of track hits using samples of stopping secondary charged pions in data collected by the ProtoDUNE-SP detector, and also in a detailed simulation. Additional studies describe the impact of the dE/dx model on energy measurement performance. The method described in this paper to characterize the energy measurement performance can be repeated in any LArTPC experiment using stopping secondary charged pions.

13. Consensus effects of social media synthetic influence groups on scale-free networks

Abstract: Online platforms for social interactions are an essential part of modern society. With the advance of technology and the rise of algorithms and AI, content is now filtered systematically and facilitates the formation of filter bubbles. This work investigates the social consensus under limited visibility in a two-state majority-vote model on Barab\'asi-Albert scale-free networks. In the consensus evolution, each individual assimilates the opinion of the majority of their neighbors with probability $1-q$ and disagrees with chance $q$, known as the noise parameter. We define the visibility parameter $V$ as the probability of an individual considering the opinion of a neighbor at a given interaction. The parameter $V$ enables us to model the limited visibility phenomenon that produces synthetic neighborhoods in online interactions. We employ Monte Carlo simulations and finite-size scaling analysis to obtain the critical noise parameter as a function of the visibility $V$ and the growth parameter $z$. We find the critical exponents $\beta/\bar{\nu}$, $\gamma/\bar{\nu}$ and $1/\bar{\nu}$ of and validate their unitary relation for complex networks. 14. On the design and stability of cancer adaptive therapy cycles: deterministic and stochastic models

Abstract: Adaptive therapy is a promising paradigm for treating cancers, that exploits competitive interactions between drug-sensitive and drug-resistant cells, thereby avoiding or delaying treatment failure due to evolution of drug resistance within the tumor. Previous studies have shown the mathematical possibility of building cyclic schemes of drug administration which restore tumor composition to its exact initial value in deterministic models. However, algorithms for cycle design, the conditions on which such algorithms are certain to work, as well as conditions for cycle stability remain elusive. Here, we state biologically motivated hypotheses that guarantee existence of such cycles in two deterministic classes of mathematical models already considered in the literature: Lotka-Volterra and adjusted replicator dynamics. We stress that not only existence of cyclic schemes, but also stability of such cycles is a relevant feature for applications in real clinical scenarios. We also analyze stochastic versions of the above deterministic models, a necessary step if we want to take into account that real tumors are composed by a finite population of cells subject to randomness, a relevant feature in the context of low tumor burden. We argue that the stability of the deterministic cycles is also relevant for the stochastic version of the models. In fact, Dua, Ma and Newton [Cancers (2021)] and Park and Newton [Phys. Rev. E (2023)] observed breakdown of deterministic cycles in a stochastic model (Moran process) for a tumor. Our findings indicate that the breakdown phenomenon is not due to stochasticity itself, but to the deterministic instability inherent in the cycles of the referenced papers. We then illustrate how stable deterministic cycles avoid for very large times the breakdown of cyclic treatments in stochastic tumor models., Comment: 28 pages, 14 figures

16. The science behind beverage flavors: The role of pH and amylase enzyme in the human mouth

Abstract: The chemical composition of alcoholic beverages plays a crucial role in their flavor, and the interaction with the chemistry of the mouth, particularly saliva, further shapes the sensory experience. Saliva's pH and enzyme activity can affect the chemical balance of the drink, and therefore, the taste and aroma perceived by the taster. This study examined the influence of saliva on the pH and α-amylase activity of alcoholic beverages, through a potentiometer and enzymatic kits respectively, and how this affected their sensory profile, through the performance of a Descriptive Analysis (DA) sensory test. The results showed that the pH values of the drinks were altered after contact with saliva, with brandies showing an increase in pH and wines showing a decrease. Additionally, the α-amylase activity was found to be influenced by the presence of acids, ethanol, and tannins in the drink. These observations suggest that the chemical composition of the drink and the saliva can impact the sensory experience. Further studies can help to elucidate the mechanisms underlying this interaction and how it varies across different types of beverages and individuals through sensitive enzyme kits.

Abstract: Searches for pair-produced multijet signatures using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 128 fb^{-1} of proton-proton collisions at sqrt[s]=13 TeV are presented. A data scouting technique is employed to record events with low jet scalar transverse momentum sum values. The electroweak production of particles predicted in R-parity violating supersymmetric models is probed for the first time with fully hadronic final states. This is the first search for prompt hadronically decaying mass-degenerate higgsinos, and extends current exclusions on R-parity violating top squarks and gluinos.

Abstract: The first search for soft unclustered energy patterns (SUEPs) is performed using an integrated luminosity of 138 fb^{-1} of proton-proton collision data at sqrt[s]=13 TeV, collected in 2016-2018 by the CMS detector at the LHC. Such SUEPs are predicted by hidden valley models with a new, confining force with a large 't Hooft coupling. In events with boosted topologies, selected by high-threshold hadronic triggers, the multiplicity and sphericity of clustered tracks are used to reject the background from standard model quantum chromodynamics. With no observed excess of events over the standard model expectation, limits are set on the cross section for production via gluon fusion of a scalar mediator with SUEP-like decays.

Abstract: The first observation of the concurrent production of two Formula Presented mesons in proton-nucleus collisions is presented. The analysis is based on a proton-lead (Formula Presented) data sample recorded at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of 8.16 TeV by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of Formula Presented. The two Formula Presented mesons are reconstructed in their Formula Presented decay channels with transverse momenta Formula Presented and rapidity Formula Presented. Events where one of the Formula Presented mesons is reconstructed in the dielectron channel are also considered in the search. The Formula Presented process is observed with a significance of 5.3 standard deviations. The measured inclusive fiducial cross section, using the four-muon channel alone, is Formula Presented. A fit of the data to the expected rapidity separation for pairs of Formula Presented mesons produced in single (SPS) and double (DPS) parton scatterings yields Formula Presented and Formula Presented, respectively. This latter result can be transformed into a lower bound on the effective DPS cross section, closely related to the squared average interparton transverse separation in the collision, of Formula Presented at 95% confidence level.

Abstract: The CERN LHC provided proton and heavy ion collisions during its Run 2 operation period from 2015 to 2018. Proton-proton collisions reached a peak instantaneous luminosity of 2.1 × 1034 cm-2s-1, twice the initial design value, at √(s)=13 TeV. The CMS experiment records a subset of the collisions for further processing as part of its online selection of data for physics analyses, using a two-level trigger system: the Level-1 trigger, implemented in custom-designed electronics, and the high-level trigger, a streamlined version of the offline reconstruction software running on a large computer farm. This paper presents the performance of the CMS high-level trigger system during LHC Run 2 for physics objects, such as leptons, jets, and missing transverse momentum, which meet the broad needs of the CMS physics program and the challenge of the evolving LHC and detector conditions. Sophisticated algorithms that were originally used in offline reconstruction were deployed online. Highlights include a machine-learning b tagging algorithm and a reconstruction algorithm for tau leptons that decay hadronically.

Abstract: The international collaboration designing and constructing the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) at the Long-Baseline Neutrino Facility (LBNF) has developed a two-phase strategy toward the implementation of this leading-edge, large-scale science project. The 2023 report of the US Particle Physics Project Prioritization Panel (P5) reaffirmed this vision and strongly endorsed DUNE Phase I and Phase II, as did the European Strategy for Particle Physics. While the construction of the DUNE Phase I is well underway, this White Paper focuses on DUNE Phase II planning. DUNE Phase-II consists of a third and fourth far detector (FD) module, an upgraded near detector complex, and an enhanced 2.1 MW beam. The fourth FD module is conceived as a "Module of Opportunity", aimed at expanding the physics opportunities, in addition to supporting the core DUNE science program, with more advanced technologies. This document highlights the increased science opportunities offered by the DUNE Phase II near and far detectors, including long-baseline neutrino oscillation physics, neutrino astrophysics, and physics beyond the standard model. It describes the DUNE Phase II near and far detector technologies and detector design concepts that are currently under consideration. A summary of key R&D goals and prototyping phases needed to realize the Phase II detector technical designs is also provided. DUNE's Phase II detectors, along with the increased beam power, will complete the full scope of DUNE, enabling a multi-decadal program of groundbreaking science with neutrinos.

Abstract: Brownian and fractional processes are useful computational tools for the modelling of physical phenomena. Here, modelling linear homopolymers in solution as Brownian or fractional processes, we develop a formalism to take into account both the interactions of the polymer with the solvent as well as the effect of arbitrary polymer-polymer potentials and Gibbs factors. Abstract: When spacetime is considered as a subspace of a wider complex spacetime manifold, there is a mismatch of the elementary linear representations of their symmetry groups, the real and complex Poincar\'{e} groups. In particular, no spinors are allowed for the complex case. Abstract: ProtoDUNE Single-Phase (ProtoDUNE-SP) is a 770-ton liquid argon time projection chamber that operated in a hadron test beam at the CERN Neutrino Platform in 2018. We present a measurement of the total inelastic cross section of charged kaons on argon as a function of kaon energy using 6 and 7 GeV/$c$ beam momentum settings. The flux-weighted average of the extracted inelastic cross section at each beam momentum setting was measured to be 380$\pm$26 mbarns for the 6 GeV/$c$ setting and 379$\pm$35 mbarns for the 7 GeV/$c$ setting.

Abstract: The determination of the direction of a stellar core collapse via its neutrino emission is crucial for the identification of the progenitor for a multimessenger follow-up. A highly effective method of reconstructing supernova directions within the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) is introduced. The supernova neutrino pointing resolution is studied by simulating and reconstructing electron-neutrino charged-current absorption on $^{40}$Ar and elastic scattering of neutrinos on electrons. Procedures to reconstruct individual interactions, including a newly developed technique called ``brems flipping'', as well as the burst direction from an ensemble of interactions are described. Performance of the burst direction reconstruction is evaluated for supernovae happening at a distance of 10 kpc for a specific supernova burst flux model. The pointing resolution is found to be 3.4 degrees at 68% coverage for a perfect interaction-channel classification and a fiducial mass of 40 kton, and 6.6 degrees for a 10 kton fiducial mass respectively. Assuming a 4% rate of charged-current interactions being misidentified as elastic scattering, DUNE's burst pointing resolution is found to be 4.3 degrees (8.7 degrees) at 68% coverage., Comment: 25 pages, 16 figures

Abstract: In this work, we present a tutorial on how to account for the computational time complexity overhead of signal processing in the spectral efficiency (SE) analysis of wireless waveforms. Our methodology is particularly relevant in scenarios where achieving higher SE entails a penalty in complexity, a common trade-off present in 6G candidate waveforms. We consider that SE derives from the data rate, which is impacted by time-dependent overheads. Thus, neglecting the computational complexity overhead in the SE analysis grants an unfair advantage to more computationally complex waveforms, as they require larger computational resources to meet a signal processing runtime below the symbol period. We demonstrate our points with two case studies. In the first, we refer to IEEE 802.11a-compliant baseband processors from the literature to show that their runtime significantly impacts the SE perceived by upper layers. In the second case study, we show that waveforms considered less efficient in terms of SE can outperform their more computationally expensive counterparts if provided with equivalent high-performance computational resources. Abstract: The $N$-point discrete Fourier transform (DFT) is a cornerstone for several signal processing applications. Many of these applications operate in real-time, making the computational complexity of the DFT a critical performance indicator to be optimized. Unfortunately, whether the $\mathcal{O}(N\log_2 N)$ time complexity of the fast Fourier transform (FFT) can be outperformed remains an unresolved question in the theory of computation. However, in many applications of the DFT -- such as compressive sensing, image processing, and wideband spectral analysis -- only a small fraction of the output signal needs to be computed because the signal is sparse. This motivates the development of algorithms that compute specific DFT coefficients more efficiently than the FFT algorithm. In this article, we show that the number of points of some DFT coefficients can be dramatically reduced by means of elementary mathematical properties. We present an algorithm that compacts the square index coefficients (SICs) of DFT (i.e., $X_{k\sqrt{N}}$, $k=0,1,\cdots, \sqrt{N}-1$, for a square number $N$) from $N$ to $\sqrt{N}$ points at the expense of $N-1$ complex sums and no multiplication. Based on this, any regular DFT algorithm can be straightforwardly applied to compute the SICs with a reduced number of complex multiplications. Abstract: Automatic prediction of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) disease progression provides a more efficient and objective alternative than manual approaches. We propose ALS longitudinal speech transformer (ALST), a neural network-based automatic predictor of ALS disease progression from longitudinal speech recordings of ALS patients. By taking advantage of high-quality pretrained speech features and longitudinal information in the recordings, our best model achieves 91.0\% AUC, improving upon the previous best model by 5.6\% relative on the ALS TDI dataset. Careful analysis reveals that ALST is capable of fine-grained and interpretable predictions of ALS progression, especially for distinguishing between rarer and more severe cases. Code is publicly available.

Abstract: This work investigates the effects of complex networks on the collective behavior of a three-state opinion formation model in economic systems. Our model considers two distinct types of investors in financial markets: noise traders and fundamentalists. Financial states evolve via probabilistic dynamics that include economic strategies with local and global influences. The local majoritarian opinion drives noise traders' market behavior, while the market index influences the financial decisions of fundamentalist agents. We introduce a level of market anxiety $q$ present in the decision-making process that influences financial action. In our investigation, nodes of a complex network represent market agents, whereas the links represent their financial interactions. We investigate the stochastic dynamics of the model on three distinct network topologies, including scale-free networks, small-world networks and Erd{\"o}s-R\'enyi random graphs. Our model mirrors various traits observed in real-world financial return series, such as heavy-tailed return distributions, volatility clustering, and short-term memory correlation of returns. The histograms of returns are fitted by coupled Gaussian distributions, quantitatively revealing transitions from a leptokurtic to a mesokurtic regime under specific economic heterogeneity. We show that the market dynamics depend mainly on the average agent connectivity, anxiety level, and market composition rather than on specific features of network topology., Comment: 15 pages, 14 figures
