Abstract

The first book to explore the deaths of explorer Jules Crevaux and his crew from an Indigenous perspective.In 1882, the celebrated French explorer Jules Crevaux and his crew were killed by Indigenous people in the Bolivian Chaco, a fiercely contested region on the border between Bolivia, Argentina, and Paraguay. The event sparked an international uproar. The scene of the crime was embroiled in clashes among various Indigenous peoples, rubber tappers, and missionaries. Official investigators sent from France and competing newspapers ended up mired in a morass of equivocal, ambiguous, false, and contradictory information.To make sense of this event, Isabelle Combès is the first researcher to consult the local archives and to include the perspective of Indigenous peoples. In search of who killed Crevaux and why, Combès unearths the power struggles and social imaginaries behind the incident and its aftermath. Readers will find not only an engrossing story in these pages but also an exemplar of historical inquiry that questions the very nature of truth-telling.

Abstract

By analyzing multitissue gene expression and genome-wide genetic variation data in samples from a vervet monkey pedigree, we generated a transcriptome resource and produced the first catalog of expression quantitative trait loci (eQTLs) in a nonhuman primate model. This catalog contains more genome-wide significant eQTLs per sample than comparable human resources and identifies sex- and age-related expression patterns. Findings include a master regulatory locus that likely has a role in immune function and a locus regulating hippocampal long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs), whose expression correlates with hippocampal volume. This resource will facilitate genetic investigation of quantitative traits, including brain and behavioral phenotypes relevant to neuropsychiatric disorders.

Abstract

The freshwater phase of the first seaward migration of juvenile Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) is relatively well understood when compared with our understanding of the marine phase of their migration. In 2021, 1008 wild and 60 ranched Atlantic salmon smolts were tagged with acoustic transmitters in 12 rivers in England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Ireland. Large marine receiver arrays were deployed in the Irish Sea at two locations: at the transition of the Irish Sea into the North Atlantic between Ireland and Scotland, and between southern Scotland and Northern Ireland, to examine the early phase of the marine migration of Atlantic salmon smolts. After leaving their natal rivers' post‐smolt migration through the Irish Sea was rapid with minimum speeds ranging from 14.03 to 38.56 km.day−1 for Atlantic salmon smolts that entered the Irish Sea directly from their natal river, to 9.69–39.94 km.day−1 for Atlantic salmon smolts that entered the Irish Sea directly from their natal estuary. Population minimum migration success through the study area was strongly correlated with the distance of travel, populations further away from the point of entry to the open North Atlantic exhibited lower migration success. Post‐smolts from different populations experienced different water temperatures on entering the North Atlantic. This was largely driven by the timing of their migration and may have significant consequences for feeding and ultimately survivorship. The influence of water currents on post‐smolt movement was investigated using data from previously constructed numerical hydrodynamic models. Modeled water current data in the northern Irish Sea showed that post‐smolts had a strong preference for migrating when the current direction was at around 283° (west‐north‐west) but did not migrate when exposed to strong currents in other directions. This is the most favorable direction for onward passage from the Irish Sea to the continental shelf edge current, a known accumulation point for migrating post‐smolts. These results strongly indicate that post‐smolts migrating through the coastal marine environment are: (1) not simply migrating by current following (2) engage in active directional swimming (3) have an intrinsic sense of their migration direction and (4) can use cues other than water current direction to orientate during this part of their migration. Abstract

Deregulated protein and [Ca.sup.2+] homeostasis underlie synaptic dysfunction and neurodegeneration in Huntington disease (HD); however, the factors that disrupt homeostasis are not fully understood. Here, we determined that expression of downstream regulatory element antagonist modulator (DREAM), a multifunctional [Ca.sup.2+]-binding protein, is reduced in murine in vivo and in vitro HD models and in HD patients. DREAM downregulation was observed early after birth and was associated with endogenous neuroprotection. In the R6/2 mouse HD model, induced DREAM haplodeficiency or blockade of DREAM activity by chronic administration of the drug repaglinide delayed onset of motor dysfunction, reduced striatal atrophy, and prolonged life span. DREAM-related neuroprotection was linked to an interaction between DREAM and the unfolded protein response (UPR) sensor activating transcription factor 6 (ATF6). Repaglinide blocked this interaction and enhanced ATF6 processing and nuclear accumulation of transcriptionally active ATF6, improving prosurvival UPR function in striatal neurons. Abstract

[Resumen]: Los puertos marítimos se han convertido en un pilar fundamental para el desarrollo económico global. Los efectos de la globalización han hecho que los puertos se posicionen como el principal método de transporte de bienes materiales, lo que ha provocado que haya un flujo comercial constante y a gran escala. Por ello, es necesario transformar estos entornos portuarios en los llamados “Smart Ports” o puertos inteligentes para mejorar la seguridad, la eficiencia y la supervisión de las operaciones que se llevan a cabo en ellos. En este proyecto, se proponen dos metodologías automáticas para la detección de eventos de atraque y desatraque de barcos, estando la primera basada en técnicas clásicas de visión artificial y la segunda en técnicas de Deep Learning. En base a los resultados obtenidos, se analiza qué aproximación es más adecuada para este dominio de aplicación. Finalmente, se integra este sistema en un servicio vinculado a una plataforma ”Smart Ports” para el manejo automatizado de eventos, lo que muestra una aplicación del sistema en el mundo real. Son escasos, si no nulos, los antecedentes bibliográficos referentes a la problemática propuesta, lo que añade valor al desarrollo de este sistema, dando pie a futuros avances en la investigación del dominio. [Abstract]: Seaports have become fundamental pillars of worldwide economic development. The effects of globalization have made ports position themselves as the main method of goods transportation, which has produced a constant and large-scale commercial flow. Thus, it is necessary to transform these port environments into the so-called “Smart Ports” to improve security, efficiency and supervision involving the operations performed in said environments. In this project, two automatic methodologies for the detection of ship docking and undocking events are proposed, the first based on classical computer vision techniques and the second on Deep Learning ones. From the obtained results, which methodology between the former and the latter is more adequate for this application domain is discussed. Finally, the system is integrated into a service linked to a “Smart Ports” platform for automated event handling, showing a real-world implementation of the system. Bibliographic precedents referring to the proposed problem are scarce, if not null, which adds value to the development of this system, giving cause for future advances in the domain’s research. Abstract

In the 1890s, at the height of the rubber boom, steamboats dominate the rivers of Bolivian Amazonia. The technophile discourse of the period presents the steamer as a revolution that changes everything: it allows social progress and economic development, it frees transport from the constraints of the geography, it reinforces national sovereignty and, at the same time, it overcomes interethnic conflict. Nevertheless, a careful reading of the historical sources allows us to question whether it is reasonable to reduce the rubber-transporting steamer to an icon of progress and the nationalist agenda. A historical anthropology of the steamer helps to understand what happens with the vessel itself beyond political economy, nation-building processes, and the Amazonian landscape, while also aiming to reconstruct the biographies, histories, and imaginaries of the steamboat itself and its people, and in turn an integral fluvial experience that embodies novel perceptions of alterity of the river and the Bolivian jungle. Abstract

RESUMEN Objetivo Las infecciones relacionadas con la asistencia sanitaria (IRAS) son un problema de salud pública, siendo las infecciones de localización quirúrgica (ILQ) las más frecuentes a nivel hospitalario. El objetivo de este estudio fue evaluar el efecto de la adecuación de la profilaxis antibiótica en la incidencia de infección quirúrgica en pacientes histerectomizadas. Material y métodos Se realizó un estudio de cohortes prospectivo entre octubre de 2009 y diciembre de 2018. Se estudió la incidencia de ILQ durante los primeros 30 días tras la cirugía. Se evaluó el grado de adecuación de la profilaxis antibiótica en histerectomía y el efecto de su inadecuación en la incidencia de infección con el riesgo relativo (RR) ajustado mediante un modelo de regresión logística. Resultados Se estudiaron 1.025 intervenciones en 1.022 mujeres. La incidencia acumulada de ILQ fue del 2,1% (n=22) y la etiología más frecuente Escherichia coli (23,1%) y Proteus mirabilis (23,1%). La profilaxis antibiótica estaba indicada en 1.014 intervenciones (98,9%) administrándose en 1.009 de ellas (99,5%), con una adecuación general al protocolo del 92,5%. La causa principal de no cumplimiento fue el tiempo de inicio (40,9%), seguida por la elección del antibiótico (35,2%). El efecto de la inadecuación de la profilaxis sobre la incidencia de infección fue de RR=0,9; IC95% 0,2-3,9; p>0,05. Conclusiones La adecuación de la profilaxis antibiótica fue muy alta, con una baja incidencia de infección quirúrgica. No se encontró asociación entre adecuación de la profilaxis e incidencia de infección en histerectomía. Se debe insistir en la mejora continua de la vigilancia epidemiológica en ginecología.

O presente trabalho discute a abordagem de Fredrik Barth para o problema da etnicidade com base em uma análise abrangente de sua obra. Levam-se em conta algumas idéias-chave que aparecem de maneira recorrente nos escritos programáticos e teórico-metodológicos desse autor, bem como em seus estudos etnográficos. Analisa-se o poder explicativo dos fatores ecológicos e demográficos em seu modelo, a importância de sua tese da identidade relativa, a genealogia das influências teóricas encontradas nas explicações barthianas e o problema do ator racional como fio condutor de sua concepção interacionista das relações sociais.
