Search

The blue supergiant (BSG) domain contains a large variety of stars whose past and future evolutionary paths are still highly uncertain. Since binary interaction plays a crucial role in the fate of massive stars, investigating the multiplicity among BSGs helps shed light on the fate of such objects. We aim to estimate the binary fraction of a large sample of BSGs in the Small Magellanic Cloud within the Binarity at LOw Metallicity (BLOeM) survey. In total, we selected 262 targets with spectral types B0-B3 and luminosity classes I-II. This work is based on spectroscopic data collected by the GIRAFFE instrument, mounted on the Very Large Telescope, which gathered nine epochs over three months. Our spectroscopic analysis for each target includes the individual and peak-to-peak radial velocity measurements, an investigation of the line profile variability, and a periodogram analysis to search for possible short- and long-period binaries. By applying a 20 km s$^{-1}$ threshold on the peak-to-peak radial velocities above which we would consider the star to be binary, the resulting observed spectroscopic binary fraction for our BSG sample is 23 $\pm$ 3$\%$. In addition, we derived reliable orbital periods for 41 spectroscopic binaries and potential binary candidates, among which there are 17 eclipsing binaries, including 20 SB1 and SB2 systems with periods of less than 10 days. We reported a significant drop in the binary fraction of BSGs with spectral types later than B2 and effective temperatures less than 18 kK, which could indicate the end of the main sequence phase in this temperature regime. Given the uncertain evolutionary status of blue supergiant stars, their multiplicity properties hold vital clues to better understand their origin and evolution. As part of The Binarity at LOw Metallicity (BLOeM) campaign in the Small Magellanic Cloud we present a multi-epoch spectroscopic survey of 128 supergiant stars of spectral type B5--F5, which roughly correspond to initial masses in the range 6 to 30 solar masses. The observed binary fraction for the B5-9 supergiants is 25+/-6 % (10+/-4 %) and 5+/-2 % (0 %) for the A-F stars, using a radial velocity (RV) variability threshold of 5 kms (10 kms) as a criterion for binarity. Accounting for observational biases we find an intrinsic multiplicity fraction of less than 18% for the B5-9 stars and 8$^{+9}_{-7}$% for the AF stars, for the orbital periods up to 10$^{3.5}$day and mass-ratios (q) in the range 0.1 < q < 1. The large stellar radii of these supergiant stars prevent short orbital periods but we demonstrate that this effect alone cannot explain our results. We assess the spectra and RV time series of the detected binary systems and find that only a small fraction display convincing solutions. We conclude that the multiplicity fractions are compromised by intrinsic stellar variability such that the true multiplicity fraction may be significantly smaller. Our main conclusions from comparing the multiplicity properties of the B5-9 and AF supergiants to that of their less evolved counterparts is that such stars cannot be explained by a direct evolution from the main sequence. Furthermore, by comparing their multiplicity properties to red supergiant stars we conclude that the AF supergiant stars are neither progenitors nor descendants of red supergiants., Comment: Accepted in A&A

Rapidly rotating classical OBe stars have been proposed as the products of binary interactions, and the fraction of Be stars with compact companions implies that at least some are. However, to constrain the interaction physics spinning up the OBe stars, a large sample of homogeneously analysed OBe stars with well-determined binary characteristics and orbital parameters are required. We investigate the multiplicity properties of a sample of 18 Oe, 62 Be, and two Of?p stars observed within the BLOeM survey in the Small Magellanic Cloud. We analyse the first nine epochs of spectroscopic observations obtained over approximately three months in 2023. Radial velocities (RVs) of all stars are measured. Applying commonly-used binarity criteria we classify objects as binaries, binary candidates, and apparently single (RV stable) objects. We further inspect the spectra for double-lined spectroscopic binaries and cross-match with catalogues of X-ray sources and photometric binaries. We classify 14 OBe stars as binaries, and an additional 11 as binary candidates. The two Of?p stars are apparently single. Two more objects are most likely currently interacting binaries. Without those, the observed binary fraction for the OBe sample (78 stars) is f_OBe_obs=0.18+/-0.04 (f_obs_cand=0.32+/-0.05 including candidates). This fraction is less than half of that measured for OB stars in BLOeM. Combined with the lower fraction of SB2s, this suggests that OBe stars have indeed fundamentally different binary properties than OB stars. We find no evidence for OBe binaries with massive compact companions, in contrast to expectations from binary population synthesis. The Neptunian desert and savanna have been recently found to be separated by a ridge, an overdensity of planets in the $\simeq$3-5 days period range. These features are thought to be shaped by dynamical and atmospheric processes. However, their relative roles are not yet well understood. We intend to confirm and characterise the super-Neptune TESS candidate TOI-5005.01, which orbits a moderately bright (V = 11.8) solar-type star (G2 V) with an orbital period of 6.3 days. We confirm TOI-5005 b to be a transiting super-Neptune with a radius of $R_{\rm p}$ = $6.25\pm 0.24$ $\rm R_{\rm \oplus}$ ($R_{\rm p}$ = $0.558\pm 0.021$ $\rm R_{\rm J}$) and a mass of $M_{\rm p}$ = $32.7\pm 5.9$ $\rm M_{\oplus}$ ($M_{\rm p}$ = $0.103\pm 0.018$ $\rm M_{\rm J}$), which corresponds to a mean density of $\rho_{\rm p}$ = $0.74 \pm 0.16$ $\rm g \, cm^{-3}$. Our internal structure modelling indicates that the overall metal mass fraction is well constrained to a value slightly lower than that of Neptune and Uranus ($Z_{\rm planet}$ = $0.76^{+0.04}_{-0.11}$). We also estimated the present-day atmospheric mass-loss rate of TOI-5005 b but found contrasting predictions depending on the choice of photoevaporation model. At a population level, we find statistical evidence ($p$-value = $0.0092^{+0.0184}_{-0.0066}$) that planets in the savanna such as TOI-5005 b tend to show lower densities than planets in the ridge, with a dividing line around 1 $\rm g \, cm^{-3}$, which supports the hypothesis of different evolutionary pathways populating both regimes. TOI-5005 b is located in a key region of the period-radius space to study the transition between the Neptunian ridge and the savanna. It orbits the brightest star of all such planets, which makes it a target of interest for atmospheric and orbital architecture observations that will bring a clearer picture of its overall evolution., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A. Wolf-Rayet stars (WRs) are one of the final evolutionary stages of massive stars and immediate progenitors of stellar-mass black holes. Their multiplicity forms an important anchor point in single and binary population models for predicting gravitational-wave progenitors. Recent spectroscopic campaigns have suggested incompatible multiplicity fractions and period distributions for N- and C-rich Galactic WRs (WNs and WCs) at short as well as long orbital periods, in contradiction with evolutionary model predictions. In this work, we employed infrared interferometry using the $K$-band instrument GRAVITY at the VLTI to investigate the multiplicity of WRs at long periods and explore the nature of their companions. We present a survey of 39 Galactic WRs, including 11 WN, 15 WC and 13 H-rich WN (WNh) stars. We detected wide companions with GRAVITY for only four stars: WR 48, WR 89, WR 93 and WR 115. Combining with spectroscopic studies, we arrived at multiplicity fractions of $f^{\rm WN}_{\rm obs} = 0.55\pm0.15$, $f^{\rm WC}_{\rm obs} = 0.40\pm0.13$ and $f^{\rm WNh}_{\rm obs} = 0.23\pm0.12$. In addition, we also found other features in the GRAVITY dataset such as (i) a diffuse extended component in over half the WR sample; (ii) five known spectroscopic binaries resolved in differential phase data and (iii) spatially resolved winds in four stars: WR 16, WR 31a, WR 78 and WR 110. Our survey reveals a lack of intermediate (few 100s d) and long- (few years to decades) period WR systems. The 200-d peak in the period distributions of WR+OB and BH+OB binaries predicted by Case B mass-transfer binary evolution models is not seen in our data. The rich companionship of their O-type progenitors in this separation range suggest that the WR progenitor stars expand and interact with their companions, most likely through unstable mass-transfer, resulting in either a short-period system or a merger., Comment: Accepted in A&A

We report the spectroscopic confirmation and fundamental properties of TOI-757 b, a mini-Neptune on a 17.5-day orbit transiting a bright star ($V = 9.7$ mag) discovered by the TESS mission. We acquired high-precision radial velocity measurements with the HARPS, ESPRESSO, and PFS spectrographs to confirm the planet detection and determine its mass. We also acquired space-borne transit photometry with the CHEOPS space telescope to place stronger constraints on the planet radius, supported with ground-based LCOGT photometry. WASP and KELT photometry were used to help constrain the stellar rotation period. We also determined the fundamental parameters of the host star. We find that TOI-757 b has a radius of $R_{\mathrm{p}} = 2.5 \pm 0.1 R_{\oplus}$ and a mass of $M_{\mathrm{p}} = 10.5^{+2.2}_{-2.1} M_{\oplus}$, implying a bulk density of $\rho_{\text{p}} = 3.6 \pm 0.8$ g cm$^{-3}$. Our internal composition modeling was unable to constrain the composition of TOI-757 b, highlighting the importance of atmospheric observations for the system. We also find the planet to be highly eccentric with $e$ = 0.39$^{+0.08}_{-0.07}$, making it one of the very few highly eccentric planets among precisely characterized mini-Neptunes. Based on comparisons to other similar eccentric systems, we find a likely scenario for TOI-757 b's formation to be high eccentricity migration due to a distant outer companion. We additionally propose the possibility of a more intrinsic explanation for the high eccentricity due to star-star interactions during the earlier epoch of the Galactic disk formation, given the low metallicity and older age of TOI-757., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS; 26 pages, 14 figures, 6 tables

Surveys in the Milky Way and Large Magellanic Cloud revealed that the majority of massive stars will interact with companions during their lives. However, knowledge of the binary properties of massive stars at low metallicity, which approaches the conditions of the Early Universe, remains sparse. We present the Binarity at LOw Metallicity (BLOeM) campaign - an ESO large programme designed to obtain 25 epochs of spectroscopy for 929 massive stars in the SMC - the lowest metallicity conditions in which multiplicity is probed to date (Z = 0.2 Zsun). BLOeM will provide (i) the binary fraction, (ii) the orbital configurations of systems with periods P < 3 yr, (iii) dormant OB+BH binaries, and (iv) a legacy database of physical parameters of massive stars at low metallicity. The stars are observed with the LR02 setup of the giraffe instrument of the Very Large Telescope (3960-4570A, resolving power R=6200; typical signal-to-noise ratio S/N=70-100). This paper utilises the first 9 epochs obtained over a three-month time. We describe the survey and data reduction, perform a spectral classification of the stacked spectra, and construct a Hertzsprung-Russell diagram of the sample via spectral-type and photometric calibrations. The sample covers spectral types from O4 to F5, spanning the effective temperature and luminosity ranges 6.5

The spin evolution of stars in close binary systems can be strongly affected by tides. We investigate the rotational synchronisation of the stellar components for 69 SB1 systems and 14 SB2 B-type systems in the 30 Doradus region of the Large Magellanic Cloud using observations from the VFTS and BBC surveys. Their orbital periods range from a few to a few hundred days, while estimated primary masses for these systems are in the range 5-20 Msun with mass ratio ranges of approximately q=0.03-0.5 and q=0.6-1.0 for the SB1 and SB2 systems, respectively. Projected rotational velocities of the stellar components have been compared with their synchronous velocities derived from the orbital periods. We find that effectively all systems with orbital period of more than 10 days must be asynchronous, whilst all the systems with periods of less than 3 days are likely synchronised. In terms of the stellar fractional radius (r), our results imply that all systems with r<0.1 are asynchronous, with those having r>0.2 probably being synchronised. The number of super-Earth and mini-Neptune planet discoveries has increased significantly in the last two decades thanks to transit and radial velocity surveys. When it is possible to apply both techniques, we can characterise the internal composition of exoplanets, which in turn provides unique insights on their architecture, formation and evolution. We performed a combined photometric and radial velocity analysis of TOI-238 (TYC 6398-132-1), which has one short-orbit super-Earth planet candidate announced by NASA's TESS team. We aim to confirm its planetary nature using radial velocities taken with the ESPRESSO and HARPS spectrographs, to measure its mass and to detect the presence of other possible planetary companions. We carried out a joint analysis by including Gaussian processes and Keplerian orbits to account for the stellar activity and planetary signals simultaneously. We detected the signal induced by TOI-238 b in the radial velocity time-series, and the presence of a second transiting planet, TOI-238 c, whose signal appears in RV and TESS data. TOI-238 b is a planet with a radius of 1.402$^{+0.084}_{-0.086}$ R$_{\oplus}$ and a mass of 3.40$^{+0.46}_{-0.45}$ M$_{\oplus}$. It orbits at a separation of 0.02118 $\pm$ 0.00038 AU of its host star, with an orbital period of 1.2730988 $\pm$ 0.0000029 days, and has an equilibrium temperature of 1311 $\pm$ 28 K. TOI-238 c has a radius of 2.18$\pm$ 0.18 R$_{\oplus}$ and a mass of 6.7 $\pm$ 1.1 M$_{\oplus}$. It orbits at a separation of 0.0749 $\pm$ 0.0013 AU of its host star, with an orbital period of 8.465652 $\pm$ 0.000031 days, and has an equilibrium temperature of 696 $\pm$ 15 K. The mass and radius of planet b are fully consistent with an Earth-like composition, making it likely a rocky super-Earth. Recent studies of massive binaries with putative black hole companions have uncovered a phase of binary evolution that has not been observed before, featuring a bloated stripped star that very recently ceased transferring mass to a main-sequence companion. In this study, we focus on the candidate system VFTS 291, a binary with an orbital period of 108 d and a high semi-amplitude velocity ($K_1=93.7\pm0.2$ km s$^{-1}$). Through our analysis of the disentangled spectra of the two components, together with dynamical and evolutionary arguments, we identify a narrow-lined star of ~1.5-2.5 $M_\odot$ dominating the spectrum, and an early B-type main-sequence companion of $13.2\pm1.5$ $M_\odot$. The low mass of the narrow-lined star, and the high mass ratio, suggest that VFTS 291 is a post-mass-transfer system, with the narrow-lined star being bloated and stripped of its hydrogen-rich envelope, sharing many similarities with other recently discovered stripped stars. Our finding is supported by our detailed binary evolution models, which indicate that the system can be well explained by an initial configuration consisting of an 8.1 $M_\odot$ primary with an 8 $M_\odot$ companion in a 7 d orbital period. While some open questions remain, particularly concerning the surface helium enrichment of the stripped star and the rotational velocity of the companion, we expect that high-resolution spectroscopy may help reconcile our estimates with theory. Recent evolutionary computations predict that a few percent of massive OB stars in binary systems should have a dormant BH companion. Despite several reported X-ray quiet OB+BH systems over the last couple of years, finding them with certainty remains challenging. These have great importance as they can be gravitational wave (GW) source progenitors, and are landmark systems in constraining supernova kick physics. This work aims to characterise the hidden companions to the single-lined spectroscopic binaries (SB1s) in the B star population of the young open Galactic cluster NGC 6231 to find candidate systems for harbouring compact object companions. With the orbital solutions for each SB1 previously constrained, we applied Fourier spectral disentangling to multi-epoch optical VLT/FLAMES spectra of each target to extract a potential signature of a faint companion, and to identify newly disentangled double-lined spectroscopic binaries (SB2s). For targets where the disentangling does not reveal any signature of a stellar companion, we performed atmospheric and evolutionary modelling on the primary to obtain constraints on the unseen companion. Seven newly classified SB2 systems with mass ratios down to near 0.1 were identified. From the remaining targets, for which no faint companion could be extracted from the spectra, four are found to have companion masses in the predicted mass ranges of neutron stars (NSes) and BHes. Two of these have companion masses between 1 and 3.5 $M_{\odot}$, making them potential hosts of NSes (or lower mass main sequence stars). The other two are between 2.5 to 8 $M_{\odot}$ and 1.6 and 26 $M_{\odot}$, respectively, and so are identified as candidates for harbouring BH companions. However, unambiguous identification of these systems as X-ray quiet compact object harbouring binaries requires follow up observations., Comment: Submitted to A&A

We report the discovery of a multi-planetary system transiting the M0 V dwarf HD 260655 (GJ 239, TOI-4599). The system consists of at least two transiting planets, namely HD 260655 b, with a period of 2.77 d, a radius of R$_b$ = 1.240$\pm$0.023 R$_\oplus$, a mass of M$_b$ = 2.14$\pm$0.34 M$_\oplus$, and a bulk density of $\rho_b$ = 6.2$\pm$1.0 g cm$^{-3}$, and HD 260655 c, with a period of 5.71 d, a radius of R$_c$ = 1.533$^{+0.051}_{-0.046}$ R$_\oplus$, a mass of M$_c$ = 3.09$\pm$0.48 M$_\oplus$, and a bulk density of $\rho_c$ = 4.7$^{+0.9}_{-0.8}$ g cm$^{-3}$. The planets were detected in transit by the TESS mission and confirmed independently with archival and new precise radial velocities obtained with the HIRES and CARMENES instruments since 1998 and 2016, respectively. At a distance of 10 pc, HD 260655 becomes the fourth closest known multi-transiting planet system after HD 219134, LTT 1445 A, and AU Mic. Due to the apparent brightness of the host star (J = 6.7 mag), both planets are among the most suitable rocky worlds known today for atmospheric studies with the JWST, both in transmission and emission., Comment: 24 pages, 17 figures. The evolutionary status of Be-type stars remains unclear, with both single-star and binary pathways having been proposed. Here, VFTS spectroscopy of 73 Be-type stars, in the spectral-type range, B0--B3, is analysed to estimate projected rotational velocities, radial velocities and stellar parameters. They are found to be rotating faster than the corresponding VFTS B-type sample but simulations imply that their projected rotational velocities are inconsistent with them all rotating at near critical velocities. The de-convolution of the projected rotational velocities estimates leads to a mean rotational velocity estimate of 320-350 km/s, approximately 100 km/s larger than that for the corresponding B-type sample. There is a dearth of targets with rotational velocities less than 0.4 of the critical velocity, with a broad distribution reaching up to critical rotation. Our best estimate for the mean or median of the rotational velocitiy is 0.68 of the critical velocity. Rapidly-rotating B-type stars are more numerous than their Be-type counterparts, whilst the observed frequency of Be-type stars identified as binary systems is significantly lower than that for normal B-type stars, consistent with their respective radial-velocity dispersions. The semi-amplitudes for the Be-type binaries are also smaller. Similar results are found for a SMC Be-type sample centred on NGC346 with no significant differences being found between the two samples. These results are compared with the predictions of single and binary stellar evolutionary models for Be-type stars. The star NGC2004#115 in the LMC, originally classified as an (SB1) Be spectroscopic binary, bears some morphological resemblance to the Galactic systems LB-1 and HR 6819, both of which are proposed as either Be+black hole (BH) or Be+stripped He-star systems. Two data-sets (ESO/VLT and SALT) of multi-epoch optical spectra of NGC 2004#115, separated by baseline of $\sim$20 years, lead us conclude it is a triple system hosting an inner binary with a period of 2.92 d, eccentricity $\sim$0.0 and mass function $\sim$0.07 $M_\odot$. The inner binary harbours a B-type star (the primary) with projected rotational velocity of 10km/s, and luminosity $\log L/L_\odot$=3.87, contributing $\sim$60% of the V-band light to the system. The secondary is not detected, while the tertiary, which contributes 40% of the light, is tentatively identified as a less luminous B-type star with high projected rotational velocity. No ellipsoidal light variability is detected, with stringent limits being set by MACHO and Gaia data. Assuming the primary to be a main sequence star yields a mass of 8.6$ M_\odot$, while the additional assumption of synchronous rotation constrains the inclination to be almost pole-on with i~9 degrees, implying the secondary is a BH with a mass of $\sim$25 $M_\odot$. A low mass stripped star with similar luminosity is ruled out as a potential solution as its mass implies a Roche radius that is substantially smaller than the stellar radius. The outer period likely exceeds 120 days and, while the disk-like emission is variable (it is almost absent in the SALT dataset), it may be associated with the inner binary rather than the rapidly rotating tertiary. XMM-Newton provides an upper limit of 5x$10^{33}$ ergs/s on the X-ray flux, consistent with, though not constraining of, the system hosting a quiescent B+BH binary. We present the discovery of two new transiting extrasolar planet candidates identified as TOI-1296.01 and TOI-1298.01 by the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS). The planetary nature of these candidates has been secured with the SOPHIE high-precision spectrograph through the measurement of the companion's mass with the radial velocity method. Both planets are similar to Saturn in mass and have similar orbital periods of a few days. They, however, show discrepant radii and therefore different densities. The radius discrepancy might be explained by the different levels of irradiation by the host stars. The subgiant star TOI-1296 hosts a low-density planet with 1.2 RJup while the less luminous, lower-size star TOI-1298 hosts a much denser planet with a 0.84 RJup radius, resulting in bulk densities of 0.198 and 0.743 g/cm3, respectively. In addition, both stars are strongly enriched in heavy elements, having metallicities of 0.44 and 0.49 dex, respectively. The planet masses and orbital periods are 0.298 (0.039) MJup and 3.9443715 days for TOI-1296b, and 0.356 (0.032) MJup and 4.537164 days for TOI-1298b.

It is well known that massive O-stars are frequently (if not always) found in binary or higher-order multiple systems, but this fact has been less robustly investigated for the lower mass range of the massive stars, represented by the B-type stars. Obtaining the binary fraction and orbital parameter distributions of B-type stars is crucial to understand the impact of multiplicity on the archetypal progenitor of core-collapse supernovae as well as to properly investigate formation channels for gravitational wave progenitors. This work aims to characterise the multiplicity of the B-star population of the young open cluster NGC 6231 through multi-epoch optical spectroscopy of 80 B-type stars. We analyse 31 FLAMES/GIRAFFE observations of 80 B-type stars, monitoring their radial velocities (RVs) and performing a least-squares spectral analysis (Lomb-Scargle) to search for periodicity in those stars with statistically significant variability in their RVs. We constrain an observed spectroscopic binary fraction of $33\pm5$% for the B-type stars of NGC 6231, with a first order bias-correction giving a true spectroscopic binary fraction of $52\pm8$%. Out of 27 B-type binary candidates, we obtained orbital solutions for 20 systems: 15 single-lined (SB1) and 5 double-lined spectroscopic binaries (SB2s). We present these orbital solutions and the orbital parameter distributions associated with them. Our results indicate that Galactic B-type stars are less frequently found in binary systems than their more massive O-type counterparts, but their orbital properties generally resemble those of B- and O-type stars in both the Galaxy and Large Magellanic Cloud.

We present results from the B-type Binaries Characterisation (BBC) programme, a multi-epoch spectroscopic study of 88 early B-type binary candidates in the 30 Doradus region of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). From radial-velocity analysis of 29 observational epochs we confirm the binary status of 64 of our targets, comprising 50 SB1 and 14 SB2 B-type binaries. A further 20 systems (classified as SB1*) show clear signs of periodicity but with more tentative periods. Orbital solutions are presented for these 84 systems, providing the largest homogeneous sample to date of the binary properties of early B-type stars. Our derived orbital-period distribution is generally similar to those for samples of more massive (O-type) binaries in both the LMC and the Galaxy. This similarity with the properties of the more massive O-type binaries is important as early B-type stars are expected to account for the majority of core-collapse supernovae. Differences in the period distributions of the different samples start to increase above 4 d, and are also present between the earliest (B0-0.7) and later-type (B1-2.5) systems within the BBC sample, although further study is required to understand if this is an observational bias or a real physical effect. We have examined the semi-amplitude velocities and orbital periods of our sample to identify potential candidates that could hide compact companions. Comparing with probability distributions of finding black hole companions to OB-type stars from a recent theoretical study, we have found 16 binaries in the higher probability region that warrant further study., Comment: 42 pages (main body: 28 pages, supplementary material: 14 pages), 20 figures. Context: We report the discovery of TOI-519 b (TIC 218795833), a transiting substellar object (R = 1.07 RJup) orbiting a faint M dwarf (V = 17.35) on a 1.26 d orbit. Brown dwarfs and massive planets orbiting M dwarfs on short-period orbits are rare, but more have already been discovered than expected from planet formation models. TOI-519 is a valuable addition into this group of unlikely systems, and adds towards our understanding of the boundaries of planet formation. Aims: We set out to determine the nature of the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS ) object of interest TOI-519 b. Methods: Our analysis uses a SPOC-pipeline TESS light curve from Sector 7, multicolour transit photometry observed with MuSCAT2 and MuSCAT, and transit photometry observed with the LCOGT telescopes. We estimate the radius of the transiting object using multicolour transit modelling, and set upper limits for its mass, effective temperature, and Bond albedo using a phase curve model that includes Doppler boosting, ellipsoidal variations, thermal emission, and reflected light components. Results: TOI-519 b is a substellar object with a radius posterior median of 1.07 RJup and 5th and 95th percentiles of 0.66 and 1.20 RJup, respectively, where most of the uncertainty comes from the uncertainty in the stellar radius. The phase curve analysis sets an upper effective temperature limit of 1800 K, an upper Bond albedo limit of 0.49, and a companion mass upper limit of 14 MJup. The companion radius estimate combined with the Teff and mass limits suggests that the companion is more likely a planet than a brown dwarf, but a brown-dwarf scenario is more likely a priori given the lack of known massive planets in 1 day orbits around M dwarfs with Teff < 3800 K, and the existence of some (but few) brown dwarfs., Comment: Accepted to A&A

We report the discovery of a Neptune-like planet (LP 714-47 b, P = 4.05204 d, m_b = 30.8 +/- 1.5 M_earth , R_b = 4.7 +/- 0.3 R_earth ) located in the 'hot Neptune desert'. Confirmation of the TESS Object of Interest (TOI 442.01) was achieved with radial-velocity follow-up using CARMENES, ESPRESSO, HIRES, iSHELL, and PFS, as well as from photometric data using TESS, Spitzer, and ground-based photometry from MuSCAT2, TRAPPIST- South, MONET-South, the George Mason University telescope, the Las Cumbres Observatory Global Telescope network, the El Sauce telescope, the TUBITAK National Observatory, the University of Louisville Manner Telescope, and WASP-South. We also present high-spatial resolution adaptive optics imaging with the Gemini Near-Infrared Imager. The low uncertainties in the mass and radius determination place LP 714-47 b among physically well-characterised planets, allowing for a meaningful comparison with planet structure models. The host star LP 714-47 is a slowly rotating early M dwarf (T_eff = 3950 +/- 51 K) with a mass of 0.59 +/- 0.02 M_sun and a radius of 0.58 +/- 0.02 R_sun. From long-term photometric monitoring and spectroscopic activity indicators, we determine a stellar rotation period of about 33 d. The stellar activity is also manifested as correlated noise in the radial-velocity data. In the power spectrum of the radial-velocity data, we detect a second signal with a period of 16 days in addition to the four-day signal of the planet. This could be shown to be a harmonic of the stellar rotation period or the signal of a second planet. PTFO 8-8695 (CVSO 30) is a star in the 7-10 million year old Orion-OB1a cluster that shows brightness dips that resemble planetary transits. Although strong evidence against the planet hypothesis has been presented, the possibility remains debated in the literature. To obtain further clues, we inspected data from the NASA Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) and the ESA Gaia mission. The Gaia data suggest that PTFO 8-8695 is a binary: the photometric data show it to be overluminous with respect to members of its kinematic group, and the astrometric data are inconsistent with a single star. The TESS light curve shows two different photometric periods. The variability is dominated by a sinusoidal signal with a period of 11.98 hr, presumably caused by stellar rotation. Also present is a 10.76 hr signal consisting of a not-quite sinusoid interrupted by hour-long dips, the type of signal previously interpreted as planetary transits. The phase of the dips is nearly 180$^\circ$ away from the phase of the originally reported dips. As noted previously, this makes them difficult to explain as planetary transits. Instead, we believe that PTFO 8-8695 is a pair of young and rapidly rotating M dwarfs, one of which shows the same "transient-dipper" behavior that has been seen in at least 5 other cases. We report the detection of a transiting super-Earth-sized planet (R=1.39+-0.09 Rearth) in a 1.4-day orbit around L 168-9 (TOI-134),a bright M1V dwarf (V=11, K=7.1) located at 25.15+-0.02 pc. The host star was observed in the first sector of the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) mission and, for confirmation and planet mass measurement, was followed up with ground-based photometry, seeing-limited and high-resolution imaging, and precise radial velocity (PRV) observations using the HARPS and PFS spectrographs. Combining the TESS data and PRV observations, we find the mass of L168-9 b to be 4.60+-0.56 Mearth, and thus the bulk density to be 1.74+0.44-0.33 times larger than that of the Earth. The orbital eccentricity is smaller than 0.21 (95% confidence). This planet is a Level One Candidate for the TESS Mission's scientific objective - to measure the masses of 50 small planets - and is one of the most observationally accessible terrestrial planets for future atmospheric characterization., Comment: 14 pages, 8 figures, 3 tables. The Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) recently observed 18 transits of the hot Jupiter WASP-4b. The sequence of transits occurred 81.6 $\pm$ 11.7 seconds earlier than had been predicted, based on data stretching back to 2007. This is unlikely to be the result of a clock error, because TESS observations of other hot Jupiters (WASP-6b, 18b, and 46b) are compatible with a constant period, ruling out an 81.6-second offset at the 6.4$\sigma$ level. The 1.3-day orbital period of WASP-4b appears to be decreasing at a rate of $\dot{P} = -12.6 \pm 1.2$ milliseconds per year. The apparent period change might be caused by tidal orbital decay or apsidal precession, although both interpretations have shortcomings. The gravitational influence of a third body is another possibility, though at present there is minimal evidence for such a body. The Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite TESS has begun a new age of exoplanet discoveries around bright host stars. We present the discovery of HD 1397b (TOI-120.01), a giant planet in an 11.54day eccentric orbit around a bright (V=7.9) G-type subgiant. We estimate both host star and planetary parameters consistently using EXOFASTv2 based on TESS time-series photometry of transits and CORALIE radial velocity measurements. We find that HD 1397b is a Jovian planet, with a mass of $0.419\pm-0.024$ M$_{\rm Jup}$ and a radius of $1.023^{+0.023}_{-0.026$}$ R$_{\rm Jup}$. Characterising giant planets in short-period eccentric orbits, such as HD 1397b, is important for understanding and testing theories for the formation and migration of giant planets as well as planet-star interactions., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A

We have developed an interactive PYTHON code and derived crucial ephemeris data of 99.4% of all stars classified as 'Mira' in the ASAS data base, referring to pulsation periods, mean maximum magnitudes and, whenever possible, the amplitudes among others. We present a statistical comparison between our results and those given by the AAVSO International Variable Star Index (VSX), as well as those determined with the machine learning automatic procedure of Richards et al. 2012. Our periods are in good agreement with those of the VSX in more than 95% of the stars. However, when comparing our periods with those of Richards et al, the coincidence rate is only 76% and most of the remaining cases refer to aliases. We conclude that automatic codes require still more refinements in order to provide reliable period values. Period distributions of the target stars show three local maxima around 215, 275 and 330 d, apparently of universal validity, their relative strength seems to depend on galactic longitude. Our visual amplitude distribution turns out to be bimodal, however 1/3 of the targets have rather small amplitudes (A $<$ 2.5$^{m}$) and could refer to semi-regular variables (SR). We estimate that about 20% of our targets belong to the SR class. We also provide a list of 63 candidates for period variations and a sample of 35 multiperiodic stars which seem to confirm the universal validity of typical sequences in the double period and in the Petersen diagrams, Comment: 14 pages, 14 figures, and 8 tables. We present a new method for interferometric imaging that is ideal for the large fields of view and compact arrays common in 21 cm cosmology. We first demonstrate the method with simulations for two very different low frequency interferometers, the Murchison Widefield Array (MWA) and the MIT Epoch of Reionization (MITEoR) Experiment. We then apply the method to the MITEoR data set collected in July 2013 to obtain the first northern sky map from 128 MHz to 175 MHz at about 2 degree resolution, and find an overall spectral index of -2.73+/-0.11. The success of this imaging method bodes well for upcoming compact redundant low-frequency arrays such as HERA. Using a pulse-fit method, we investigate the spectral lags between the traditional gamma-ray band (50-400 keV) and the X-ray band (6-25 keV) for 8 GRBs with known redshifts (GRB 010921, GRB 020124, GRB 020127, GRB 021211, GRB 030528, GRB 040924, GRB 041006, GRB 050408) detected with the WXM and FREGATE instruments aboard the HETE-2 satellite. We find several relations for the individual GRB pulses between the spectral lag and other observables, such as the luminosity, pulse duration, and peak energy (Epeak). The obtained results are consistent with those for BATSE, indicating that the BATSE correlations are still valid at lower energies (6-25 keV). Furthermore, we find that the photon energy dependence for the spectral lags can reconcile the simple curvature effect model. Aims: Taking advantage of the forthcoming Catalog of the HETE-2 mission, the aim of this paper is to evaluate the main properties of HETE-2 GRBs - the E_peak, the T_90 and the E_iso - in their source frames and to derive their unbiased distribution. Methods: We first construct a complete sample containing all the bursts localized by the WXM on-board HETE-2, which are selected with a uniform criterion and whose observed parameters can be constrained. We then derive the intrinsic E_peak, T_90 and E_iso distributions using their redshift when it is available, or their pseudo-redshift otherwise. We finally compute the number of GRB (N_Vmax) within the visibility volume (V_max) of each GRB, in order to derive a weight for each detected burst accounting both for the detection significance and the star formation history of the universe. Results: The unbiased distributions obtained clearly show the predominence of X-ray flashes (XRFs) in the global GRB population. We also derive the rate of local GRBs: R0^H2 > 11 Gpc-3 yr-1, which is intermediate between the local rate obtained by considering only the high-luminosity bursts (~1 Gpc-3 yr-1) and that obtained by including the low-luminosity bursts (>200 Gpc-3 yr-1)., Comment: 20 pages, 14 figures, 3 tables (editor version: 15 pages, 14 figures, tables 2 and 3 only available in electronic form at http://www.aanda.org)

In this work, we present a multi-wavelength study of XRF 040912, aimed at measuring its distance scale and the intrinsic burst properties. We performed a detailed spectral and temporal analysis of both the prompt and the afterglow emission and we estimated the distance scale of the likely host galaxy. We then used the currently available sample of XRFs with known distance to discuss the connection between XRFs and classical Gamma-ray Bursts (GRBs). We found that the prompt emission properties unambiguously identify this burst as an XRF, with an observed peak energy of E_p=17+/-13 keV and a burst fluence ratio S(2-30keV)/S(30-400keV)>1. A non-fading optical source with R~24 mag and with an apparently extended morphology is spatially consistent with the X-ray afterglow, likely the host galaxy. XRF 040912 is a very dark burst since no afterglow optical counterpart is detected down to R>25 mag (3 sigma limiting magnitude) at 13.6 hours after the burst. The host galaxy spectrum detected from 3800A to 10000A, shows a single emission line at 9552A. The lack of any other strong emission lines blue-ward of the detected one and the absence of the Ly alpha cut-off down to 3800A are consistent with the hypothesis of the [OII] line at redshift z=1.563+/-0.001. The intrinsic spectral properties rank this XRF among the soft GRBs in the E_peak-E_iso diagram. Similar results were obtained for most XRFs at known redshift. Only XRF 060218 and XRF 020903 represent a good example of instrinsic XRF(i-XRF) and are possibly associated with a different progenitor population. Here we report the localizations and properties of four short-duration GRBs localized by the High Energy Transient Explorer 2 satellite (HETE-2): GRBs 010326B, 040802, 051211 and 060121, all of which were detected by the French Gamma Telescope (Fregate) and localized with the Wide-field X-ray Monitor (WXM) and/or Soft X-ray Camera (SXC) instruments. We discuss eight possible criteria for determining whether these GRBs are "short population bursts" (SPBs) or "long population bursts" (LPBs). These criteria are (1) duration, (2) pulse widths, (3) spectral hardness, (4) spectral lag, (5) energy Egamma radiated in gamma rays (or equivalently, the kinetic energy E_KE of the GRB jet), (6) existence of a long, soft bump following the burst, (7) location of the burst in the host galaxy, and (8) type of host galaxy. In particular, we have developed a likelihood method for determining the probability that a burst is an SPB or a LPB on the basis of its T90 duration alone. A striking feature of the resulting probability distribution is that the T90 duration at which a burst has an equal probability of being a SPB or a LPB is T90 = 5 s, not T90 = 2 s, as is often used. All four short-duration bursts discussed in detail in this paper have T90 durations in the Fregate 30-400 keV energy band of 1.90, 2.31, 4.25, and 1.97 sec, respectively, yielding probabilities P(S|T90) = 0.97, 0.91, 0.60, and 0.95 that these bursts are SPBs on the basis of their T90 durations alone. All four bursts also have spectral lags consistent with zero. Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) fall into two classes: short-hard and long-soft bursts. The latter are now known to have X-ray and optical afterglows, to occur at cosmological distances in star-forming galaxies, and to be associated with the explosion of massive stars. In contrast, the distance scale, the energy scale, and the progenitors of short bursts have remained a mystery. Here we report the discovery of a short-hard burst whose accurate localization has led to follow-up observations that have identified the X-ray afterglow and (for the first time) the optical afterglow of a short-hard burst. These, in turn, have led to identification of the host galaxy of the burst as a late-type galaxy at z=0.16 showing that at least some short-hard bursts occur at cosmological distances in the outskirts of galaxies, and are likely to be due to the merging of compact binaries., Comment: 19 pages, 4 figures. [Abridged] Very recently, relations between the peak energy of Gamma-Ray Burst burst spectra, the isotropic-equivalent energy of the burst, and the radiated energy of the burst have been found. In a way that is exactly analogous to the way in which the relation between the peak luminosity and the rate of decline of the light curve of Type Ia supernovae can be used to make Type Ia supernovae excellent standard candles for cosmology, so too, the relations between Epk, Eiso, and Egamma point toward a methodology for using GRBs as excellent standard candles for cosmology. In addition, GRBs occur over the broad redshift range from z=0.1 to at least z=4.5, and both they and their afterglows are easily detectable out to z > 8. Thus GRBs show great promise as cosmological ``yardsticks'' to measure the rate of expansion of the universe over time, and therefore the properties of dark energy (i.e., Omega_M, Omega_Lambda, w_0, and w_a). We describe a concept for a possible MIDEX-class mission dedicated to using GRBs to constrain the properties of dark energy that would obtain these quantities for > 800 bursts in the redshift range 0.1 >~ z <~ 10 during a 2-year mission. This burst sample would enable both Omega_M and w_0 to be determined to +/- 0.07 and +/- 0.06 (68% CL), respectively, and w_a to be significantly constrained., Comment: White paper submitted to the Dark Energy Task Force. 37 pages

GRB 020124 and GRB 030323 constitute half the sample of gamma-ray bursts with a measured redshift greater than 3. This paper presents the temporal and spectral properties of these two gamma-ray bursts detected and localized with HETE-2. While they have nearly identical redshifts (z=3.20 for GRB 020124, and z=3.37 for GRB 030323), these two GRBs span about an order of magnitude in fluence, thus sampling distinct regions of the GRB luminosity function. The properties of these two bursts are compared with those of the bulk of the GRB population detected by HETE-2. We also discuss the energetics of GRB 020124 and GRB 030323 and show that they are compatible with the Epeak - Eiso relation discovered by Amati et al. (2002). Finally, we compute the maximum redshifts at which these bursts could have been detected by HETE-2 and we address various issues connected with the detection and localization of high-z GRBs., Comment: 19 pages, 4 figures, submitted to ApJ

We describe and discuss the global properties of 45 gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) observed by HETE-2 during the first three years of its mission, focusing on the properties of X-Ray Flashes (XRFs) and X-ray-rich GRBs (XRRs). We find that the numbers of XRFs, XRRs, and GRBs are comparable. We find that the durations and the sky distributions of XRFs and XRRs are similar to those of GRBs. We also find that the spectral properties of XRFs and XRRs are similar to those of GRBs, except that the values of the peak energy $E^{\rm obs}_{\rm peak}$ of the burst spectrum in $\nu F_\nu$, the peak energy flux $\Fp$, and the energy fluence $S_E$ of XRFs are much smaller -- and those of XRRs are smaller -- than those of GRBs. Finally, we find that the distributions of all three kinds of bursts form a continuum in the [$S_E$(2-30 keV),$S_E$(30-400) keV]-plane, the [$S_E$(2-400 keV), $E_{\rm peak}$]-plane, and the [$F_{\rm peak}$(50-300 keV), $E_{\rm peak}$]-plane. We report High Energy Transient Explorer 2 (HETE-2) Wide Field X-ray Monitor/French Gamma Telescope observations of XRF030723 along with observations of the XRF afterglow made using the 6.5m Magellan Clay telescope and the Chandra X-ray Observatory. The observed peak energy E_pk_obs of the nu F_nu burst spectrum is found to lie within (or below) the WXM 2-25 keV passband at 98.5% confidence, and no counts are detected above 30 keV. Our best fit value is E_pk_obs=8.4+3.5/-3.4 keV. The ratio of X-ray to Gamma-ray flux for the burst follows a correlation found for GRBs observed with HETE-2, and the duration of the burst is similar to that typical of long-duration GRBs. If we require that the burst isotropic equivalent energy E_iso and E_pk_rest satisfy the relation discovered by Amati et al. (2002), a redshift of z=0.38+0.36/-0.18 can be determined, in agreement with constraints determined from optical observations. We are able to fit the X-ray afterglow spectrum and to measure its temporal fade. Although the best-fit fade is shallower than the concurrent fade in the optical, the spectral similarity between the two bands indicates that the X-ray fade may actually trace the optical fade. If this is the case, the late time rebrightening observed in the optical cannot be due to a supernova bump. We interpret the prompt and afterglow X-ray emission as arising from a jetted GRB observed off-axis and possibly viewed through a complex circumburst medium due to a progenitor wind., Comment: 14 pages, 9 figures, to appear in ApJ

An exceptionally intense gamma-ray burst, GRB030329, was detected and localized by the instruments on board the High Energy Transient Explorer satellite (HETE) at 11:37:14 UT on 29 March 2003. The burst consisted of two \~10s pulses of roughly equal brightness and an X-ray tail lasting >100s. The energy fluence in the 30-400 keV energy band was 1.08e-4 erg/cm2, making GRB030329 one of the brightest GRBs ever detected. Communication of a 2 arcmin error box 73 minutes after the burst allowed the rapid detection of a counterpart in the optical, X-ray, radio and the ensuing discovery of a supernova with most unusual characteristics. Analyses of the burst lightcurves reveal the presence of a distinct, bright, soft X-ray component underlying the main GRB: the 2-10 keV fluence of this component is ~7e-6 erg/cm2. The main pulses of GRB030329 were preceded by two soft, faint, non-thermal bumps. The HETE-2 mission has been highly productive. It has observed more than 250 GRBs so far. It is currently localizing 25 - 30 GRBs per year, and has localized 43 GRBs to date. Twenty-one of these localizations have led to the detection of X-ray, optical, or radio afterglows, and as of now, 11 of the bursts with afterglows have redshift determinations. HETE-2 has also observed more than 45 bursts from soft gamma-ray repeaters, and more than 700 X-ray bursts. HETE-2 has confirmed the connection between GRBs and Type Ic supernovae, a singular achievement and certainly one of the scientific highlights of the mission so far. It has provided evidence that the isotropic-equivalent energies and luminosities of GRBs may be correlated with redshift; such a correlation would imply that GRBs and their progenitors evolve strongly with redshift. Both of these results have profound implications for the nature of GRB progenitors and for the use of GRBs as a probe of cosmology and the early universe. HETE-2 has placed severe constraints on any X-ray or optical afterglow of a short GRB. It has made it possible to explore the previously unknown behavior optical afterglows at very early times, and has opened up the era of high-resolution spectroscopy of GRB optical afterglows. We report HETE-2 WXM/FREGATE observations of the X-ray flash, XRF 020903. This event was extremely soft: the ratio log(S_X/S_gamma) = 0.7, where S_X and S_gamma are the fluences in the 2-30 and 30-400 keV energy bands, is the most extreme value observed so far by HETE-2. In addition, the spectrum has an observed peak energy E^{obs}_{peak} < 5.0 keV (99.7 % probability upper limit) and no photons were detected above ~10 keV. The burst is shorter at higher energies, which is similar to the behavior of long GRBs. We consider the possibility that the burst lies at very high redshift and that the low value of E^{obs}_{peak} is due to the cosmological redshift, and show that this is very unlikely. We find that the properties of XRF 020903 are consistent with the relation between the fluences S(7-30 keV) and S(30-400 keV) found by Barraud et al. for GRBs and X-ray-rich GRBs, and are consistent with the extension by a decade of the hardness-intensity correlation (Mallozzi et al. 1995) found by the same authors. Assuming that XRF 020903 lies at a redshift z = 0.25 as implied by the host galaxy of the candidate optical and radio afterglows of this burst, we find that the properties of XRF 020903 are consistent with an extension by a factor ~300 of the relation between the isotropic-equivalent energy E_iso and the peak E_peak of the nu F_nu spectrum (in the source frame of the burst) found by Amati et al. for GRBs. The results presented in this paper therefore provide evidence that XRFs, X-ray-rich GRBs, and GRBs form a continuum and are a single phenomenon. A bright, x-ray-rich GRB was detected by HETE-2 at 11:18:34.03 UT on 11 Dec 2002. The WXM localization was to 14' and relayed to the GCN 22 s after the start of the burst. The ground SXC localization was within 2' of R.A. 08h 09m 00s, Dec 06d 44' 20" (J2000). GRB021211 consists of a single, FRED-like pulse with t90s of 2.3 s (85-400 keV) and 8.5 s (2-10 keV). The peak photon number and photon energy fluxes in the 2-400 keV band, are 34.0 +/- 1.8 ph cm^-2 s^-1 and 1.68 +/- 0.11 x 10^-6 erg cm^-2 s^-1, respectively. The energy fluences in the 2-30 keV and 30-400 kev energy bands are S_X = 1.36 +/- 0.05 x 10^-6 erg cm^-2 and S_gamma 2.17 +/- 0.15 x 10^-6 erg cm^-2, respectively. Thus GRB021211 is an X-ray-rich GRB (S_X/S_gamma = 0.63 > 0.32). The spectrum is well-fit by a Band function (alpha = -0.805, beta = -2.37, E_peak = 46.8 keV). The prompt localization allowed the detection of an optical afterglow for what would otherwise have been an ``optically dark'' GRB. GRB 021211 demonstrates that some fraction of burst afterglows are ``optically dark'' because their optical afterglows at times > 1 hr after the burst are very faint, and thus have often escaped detection. We present a spectral analysis of 35 GRBs detected with the HETE-2 gamma-ray detectors (the FREGATE instrument) in the energy range 7-400 keV. The GRB sample analyzed is made of GRBs localized with the Wide Field X-ray Monitor onboard HETE-2 or with the GRB Interplanetary Network. We derive the spectral parameters of the time-integrated spectra, and present the distribution of the low-energy photon index, alpha, and of the peak energy, e_peak . We then discuss the existence and nature of the recently discovered X-Ray Flashes and their relationship with classical GRBs., Comment: 14 pages, 43 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics

The {\it HETE-2} (hereafter \HETE) French Gamma Telescope (FREGATE) and the Wide-field X-ray Monitor (WXM) instruments detected a short ($t_{50} = 360$ msec in the FREGATE 85-300 keV energy band), hard gamma-ray burst (GRB) that occurred at 1578.72 SOD (00:26:18.72 UT) on 31 May 2002. The WXM flight localization software produced a valid location in spacecraft (relative) coordinates. However, since no on-board real-time star camera aspect was available, an absolute localization could not be disseminated. A preliminary localization was reported as a GCN Position Notice at 01:54:22 UT, 88 min after the burst. Further ground analysis produced a refined localization, which can be expressed as a 90% confidence rectangle that is 67 arcminutes in RA and 43 arcminutes in Dec (90% confidence region), centered at RA = +15$^{\rm h}$ 14$^{\rm m}$ 45$^{\rm s}$, Dec = -19$^\circ$ 21\arcmin 35\arcsec (J2000). An IPN localization of the burst was disseminated 18 hours after the GRB (Hurley et al. 2002b). A refined IPN localization was disseminated $\approx$ 5 days after the burst. This hexagonal-shaped localization error region is centered on RA = 15$^{\rm h}$ 15$^{\rm m}$ 03.57$^{\rm s}$, -19$^\circ$ 24\arcmin 51.00\arcsec (J2000), and has an area of $\approx$ 22 square arcminutes (99.7% confidence region). The prompt localization of this short, hard GRB by \HETE and the anti-Sun pointing of the \HETE instruments, coupled with the refinement of the localization by the IPN, has made possible rapid follow-up observations of the burst at radio, optical, and X-ray wavelengths., Comment: 13 pages, 7 figures. On September 21 at 18950.56 SOD (05:15:50.56) UT the FREGATE gamma-ray instrument on the High Energy Transient Explorer (HETE) detected a bright gamma-ray burst (GRB). The burst was also seen by the X-detector on the WXM X-ray instrument and was therefore well-localized in the X direction; however, the burst was outside the fully-coded field-of-view of the WXM Y-detector, and therefore information on the Y direction of the burst was limited. Cross-correlation of the HETE and Ulysses time histories yielded an Interplanetary Network (IPN) annulus that crosses the HETE error strip at a ~45 degree angle. The intersection of the HETE error strip and the IPN annulus produces a diamond-shaped error region for the location of the burst having an area of 310 square arcminutes. Based on the FREGATE and WXM light curves, the duration of the burst is characterized by a t90 = 18.4 s in the WXM 4 - 25 keV energy range, and 23.8 s and 21.8 s in the FREGATE 6 - 40 and 32 - 400 keV energy ranges, respectively. The fluence of the burst in these same energy ranges is 4.8 10^{-6}, 5.5 10^{-6}, and 11.4 10^{-6} erg cm^{-2}, respectively. Subsequent optical and radio observations by ground-based observers have identified the afterglow of GRB010921 and determined an apparent redshift of z = 0.450., Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures. The FREGATE experiment aboard HETE-II has been successfully integrated into the Third Interplanetary Network (IPN) of gamma-ray burst detectors.
