This qualitative research uses a case study to observe non-binary representation in TV fiction. The Dan character from the Spanish series HIT (RTVE, 2020–present), who is the first openly non-binary character in Spanish TV fiction, is analyzed through the lens of Queer Media Studies. The research applies a combination of content and discourse analysis. Qualitative content categories include a character's visibility, identity, relevance, embodiment, and social interaction. Discourse analysis categories include character's construction, lexicalization, propositional framing, and focus. Results show that Dan's non-binary depiction revolves around three significant axes: dualism, confusion, and exceptional talent. These axes frame social attitudes toward non-binary people and are composed by a set of features identified in Dan's case which also informs society's mind-sets. These traits are proposed as an analytical-theoretical tool for further analyses of non-binary representation in different cultural contexts. The outcomes of this research may inform audiovisual industries, regulations and academia, and are useful to consolidate non-binary media studies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Drawing on media production studies, this research observes the understudied figure of the scriptwriters of fictional series to identify their feelings about different audiences and the way they respond to LGBTQ+ characters and narratives. Specifically, it seeks to understand how they use these mental images of their audiences when they create LGBTQ+ content. Semi-structured interviews were conducted online with twenty scriptwriters of different genders and sexual identities. A thematic analysis of their responses shows that they mostly have stereotypical mental images of their audiences' preferences regarding LGBTQ+ characters and contents, which these scriptwriters actively draw upon in their work. Moreover, those images are based on their personal life experiences. Young LGBTQ+ scriptwriters are the only ones who tend not to conceive audiences as conservative or traditionalist. It is also observed that female and gay scriptwriters employ narrative strategies to protect queer audiences, female writers are inclined toward emotionally supportive portrayals, and gay writers develop characters that defend LGBTQ+ rights. The conclusion is that the creation of LGBTQ+ characters for TV series requires diverse teams of writers and literacy on sexual and gender prejudices, even among queer scriptwriters. This article analyses discussion of a narrative concerning sexual consent in a 2019 Spanish television series broadcast on Netflix called Les de l'Hoquei (The Hockey Girls). A thematic analysis was conducted on 105 comments made in response to three posts on the show's official Instagram account (all dated 27 May 2019), which summarise the series' storyline about the absence of sexual consent in the relationship between two main characters. The findings revealed two contrasting views. On the one hand, there were comments that interpret the situation by referring to stereotypes of romantic love, ignoring the conflict over sexual consent and instead treating the break-up as a problem that the couple should resolve in their own private way. On the other hand, there were comments that identify what happened as a situation of sexual non-consent, where the aspects that generated the most controversy were the use of the word 'rape' and the male character's responsibility for not having heeded the non-verbal signals given to him by his partner. From the perspective of relationships and sex education, it is concluded that audiovisual content and exchanges on social media can be useful tools when it comes to learning to acknowledge non-verbal signs of non-consent. The representation of the LGBTIQ+ community in TV series has received major attention from academia, mostly from textual and reception perspectives. However, the creative and industrial processes behind the production of media content, including the writers' views and experiences, remain under-explored, especially outside of the United States and Northern Europe. Drawing on Queer Production Studies, this research seeks to fill this gap in Queer Media Studies by examining Spanish screenwriters' experiences and conceptions regarding the creation of fictional LGBTIQ+ characters for TV shows, and observes how the broadcasting industry influences this process. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 19 Spanish screenwriters. Following thematic analysis informed by grounded theory, the main results show that normalization guides the creation of LGBTIQ+ characters, although there are differences in the way screenwriters define this concept. Moreover, the narrative exposition of the intimate lives of LGBTIQ+ characters emerges as the main dilemma in that normalization. Likewise, scriptwriters perceive ambivalent attitudes from the TV industry: Whereas the inclusion of LGBTIQ+ characters seems mandatory these days, there are fears that this might lead to low viewing figures or of reputations being tarnished by negative criticism. The results of this investigation further our understanding of how the concept of normalization shapes the creation of LGBTIQ+ media representations as perceived by professionals who play significant roles in their production. These findings contribute to the advancement of knowledge within LGBTIQ+ media studies and the construction of queer media representations. They also expand the scope of the under-explored field of Production Studies and diversify its geographical area of study. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

TELEVISION series , *DEBATE , *TRANSGENDER people , *LGBTQ+ people , *QUALITATIVE research - Abstract
There are currently more trans characters than ever in television series, while at the same time scrutiny of trans people is intensifying in social and public debate, and the correspondence between this increased presence in the media and improvements in the trans community's rights is in dispute. This research aims to find out how trans audiences relate to their portrayal in TV series, to learn about their perceptions and opinions, and to understand how these depictions affect their everyday lives. A qualitative analysis was conducted of 19 trans people in two focus groups and nine semi-structured interviews. The findings show that the participants perceive a clear distance between their realities and the most popular narratives about trans lives. They identify cispassing as a transversal element that drives the production, creation, and distribution of media narratives, leading to a transnormative representation. Consequently, the trans audience demands the inclusion of trans people in the (audiovisual) cultural circuit in order to combat the 'cis gaze' and to create more diverse narratives. - Abstract
The lack of science on the Spanish TV is explained through the people responsible for content production, scheduling and offer. Two focus groups made up of five decision-makers identified the professionals’ opinions: science on TV is needed, the function of televisual science is educating audiences, public channels are responsible for showing such contents, government should urge scientific programming, science on TV contributes in increasing the cultural level of audiences, and people holding power positions are not interested in improving society´s level of literacy. Later, the generality of those opinions was measured through a questionnaire applied to 450 TV managers. A latent profile statistical analysis showed that individual characteristics of professionals (i.e., gender, age, educational level) do not play a role in shaping their opinions but work related (i.e., area of coverage, TV ownership) do., La falta de ciencia en la televisión española puede ser explicada mediante las personas responsables de la producción, programación y oferta de contenidos televisivos.

- Abstract
Introduction: Influencers have emerged as new prescribers and digital workers who build strong communities for advertisers. Microinfluencers, who have between 5,000 and 40,000 followers, are used by brands to impact small but highly engaged digital communities. This research explores the relationship between time investment, digital impact and economic remuneration of microinfluencers' digital activity to understand new forms of labor precarity. Methodology: To this end, 34 microinfluencers have been studied through the monitoring of their digital profiles, measuring engagement and EMV, and through a questionnaire to find out their satisfaction, time invested, and economic remuneration. In addition, a second study was conducted on the digital activity of 21 popular influencers. Results and discussion: The results identify the precariousness conditions that microinfluencers face in a quantitative perspective. Besides, the analysis indicates that microinfluencers are dissatisfied due to three factors: the relationship between time invested and economic remuneration, the need to create publications without generating income, and the disproportionate relationship between the size of their community, the link they produce with their followers, and the benefits compared to celebrity influencers. Conclusions: The findings contribute to build on the preceding literature on false meritocracy and retribution through visibility and social capital at the expense of precarious working conditions within a neoliberal digital economy., Introducción: Los influencers se han convertido en nuevos prescriptores y trabajadores digitales que construyen comunidades digitales sólidas para los anunciantes.

- Abstract
With the rise of digital feminism, this article explores the role of Spanish digital influencers considered feminist referents and the topics addressed by them on their social networks from a gender perspective. An online survey was used to create a ranking of the 12 most popular influencers by social media users. First, an analysis of their professional and sociodemographic profiles was made. Second, a cross-platform content analysis of the posts published by these influencers on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram was undertaken. The results show the homogenous profile of most popular feminist influencers. The main topics addressed in their social networks are linked to gender violence, specially on Twitter, being the social network where they publish the largest number of posts with a gender perspective despite the fact that they have more followers on Instagram. Finally, the study concludes that online feminist discourses replicate the issues on the traditional media agenda and leave out other topics on the feminist agenda that involve women belonging to minorities and related to the private sphere.

This article focuses on a particular type of social media content creator: those specialized in culture, art, or political content ("digital cultural communicators"). Our main aim is to better understand digital cultural communicators' views on being or becoming a celebrity and their relationships and interactions with their audiences. To fulfill this aim, we draw upon in-depth interviews with 18 Spanish digital cultural communicators who post content on more than one platform (TikTok, YouTube, Instagram, and Twitch). The interviews were transcribed and qualitatively analyzed using thematic analysis and the software ATLAS.ti. The results show that digital cultural communicators try to distance themselves from social media celebrities and present themselves as legitimate cultural workers (and not "just" content creators). Their views on celebrities also shape their discourses about their audiences (presented as educated individuals) and how they deal with positive and negative comments. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
This study aims to shed light on adolescents' characterizations of their preferred film entertainment. It seeks to describe the psychological responses of youngsters from two European countries (Italy and Spain) to dramas from the European region about current social/human issues. The study also seeks to determine if the adolescents' responses differ according to the film and the cultural context (country) to which they belong. For doing so, the research applies an innovative visual research technique in Media Communication: a correlational network analysis. A total of 234 Italian and Spanish adolescents watched three European dramas. Later, they completed four questionnaires measuring hedonic (enjoyment), eudaimonic (appreciation) responses and predictors of them (narrative engagement and perceived realism). The results present the visual intercorrelations of the studied variables, which give deeper insights into youngsters' gratifications in film consumption. These results suggest that films appear to be more influential than country in adolescents' responses. They also show there are specific models of responses for each film in each situation. The application of the visual quantitative tool broadens our knowledge on adolescents' entertainment through dramatic film and on the role of the cultural context and the audiovisual stimulus in the entertainment responses. It also challenges empirical studies using a single stimulus.

This research analyses feminism-related tweets produced over a period of two months by both a male representative and a female representative of each of the four principal political parties in Spain (PP, PSOE, Ciudadanos and Podemos). Although their behaviour on Twitter is similar, the differences found are more marked by ideology than by gender. A content analysis shows that the parties tend to reinforce their ideological programme on Twitter, which is corroborated as a space for disseminating topics related to feminism, but not as a space for debate. Men tend to publish more than women and on less controversial topics, which allows us to observe the reproduction of patriarchal roles in the net. This research explores the phenomenon of television fiction formats from the perspective of audiovisual representation and the relationship between television fiction and cultural identity. In particular, the case study of the Spanish television series Los misterios de Laura and its adaptations in the USA and Italy is carried out. The main objective of the research is to identify the differences and similarities in the content of the three versions and the factors that may explain them. To do so, this study proposes a qualitative analysis model that analyses the text with the purpose of characterizing each of the versions and comparing them. In addition, the examination of the text is complemented by the analysis of the production context. The main results reveal that the similarities between the versions are the result of the process of searching for equivalences between cultural contexts. Moreover, those similarities related to the traits that characterise the series as a television format. On the other hand, the differences are explained by a broad set of factors pertaining to the narrative approach, the context of production, television conventions and the use of the cultural imaginary. To conclude, a connection between the global and the local regarding the adaptation of the television formats is observed, where global is related to the practices and the commercial logic of television, and local is connected to the inequality between the television industries and the persistence in using cultural identity production mechanisms in television texts.

This cross-cultural descriptive empirical research observes the relationship of 937 high-school students from eight countries of the European Union with cinema. A survey was applied in 37 schools and 28 cities for individuals participating in a course on film literacy that was offered free of charge and as an extracurricular opportunity in their educational centres. The statistical analysis of the responses shows patterns perhaps tied to the respondents' culture (country) in their motivation for going to the cinema, their film-choice preferences, the media they watch the films on, the ways they select and obtain the films they watch, the frequency with which they download films and their preferred genres. However, there are also common patterns of use and consumption across the European adolescents in the sample. The results of this research are useful for understanding the place that cinema occupies in the life of youngsters today and particularly relevant for audiovisual regulators, who, they, should take into account the cultural characteristics of young audiences if their actions are to bear fruit. To do this, an empirical study was carried out, consisting of an online questionnaire in which 140 participants answered questions about their degree of homophobia. Then they watched prescribed television material and finally answered questions related to identification, enjoyment, and taste. Afer obtaining evidence of the validity of the Modern Homophobia Scale (mhS-l), the relationships between the scale's dimensions and other variables were explored. The primary results show that people who have a lower degree of institutional homophobia enjoy the video and like it more. - Abstract

Television content has traditionally been associated with the cultural identity of a given territory, although in an increasingly global world, this relationship is under debate. From a comparative qualitative analysis of the Spanish scripted television format (STF) series Los Misterios de Laura and its adaptations for the United States and Italy, this research identifies differences between these versions in terms of narrative approach, television conventions, production context, and the use of the cultural imaginary. The findings imply the existence of aesthetic and narrative mechanisms associated with the production of cultural identity in STF fiction. They also reveal the existence of a belief within television culture that some audiences have tastes and expectations that depend on their cultural proximity to the content. This research highlights the relevance of the cultural and televisual productive contexts of each country to understand their adaptation processes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Social networks are considered one of the most important developments of the Internet. They are also seen as spaces for social movements in which the channels of information, debate, and participation merge. Using content analysis this article explores social media as an instrument to motivate political participation by citizens from ten countries. Based on the political action axes (Vedel, 2007), a content analysis is conducted to compare the following factors between two years (2010 and 2015): the type of open social networks used, the evolution of their use and potential to generate information, and deliberative and participative processes. The outcomes show that parliaments of the analyzed countries use social media tools to communicate their activities and news. However, they don’t use them as a deliberative and participative scenario integrated into the political decision process.

This study develops a longitudinal research (2010-2015) on 10 countries - 5 European countries (France, United Kingdom, Sweden, Italy and Spain) and 5 American countries (Argentina, Ecuador, Chile, Colombia and the USA). The aim is to compare how the parliaments use its official websites in order to promote the political participation process in the citizenship. The study focuses on the deliberation axe (Macintosh, 2004, Hagen, 2000, Vedel, 2003, 2007) and in the way that representative institutions define a digital strategy to create an online public sphere. Starting with the recognition of Web 2.0 as a debate sphere and as a place of reconfiguration of the traditional -and utopian- Greek Agora, the study adopts the 'deliberate' political action axe to evaluate, qualitatively and quantitatively -using a content analysis methodology- the use of the Web 2.0 tools made by the legislative bodies of the analysed countries. The article shows how, which and what parliaments use Web 2.0 tools - integrated in their web page - as a scenario that allows deliberation at the different legislative processes that integrate the examined political systems. Finally, the comparative results show the main differences and similarities between the countries, as well as a tendency to reduce deliberation tools offering by representative institutions in the countries sampled

This article presents the analysis and classification of different studies carried out to measure the media literacy skills of citizens. The text is presented in three parts. The first part presents the main theoretical categories of the analysis that define the concept of media literacy and the major frameworks designed for the study of media competences. In the second part, the article examines a group of studies that propose different frameworks that assess media literacy competences. The analyzed studies are classified according to their assessment trends and methodology. Finally, the text identifies media competences that receive higher attention in the studies and the main gaps according to the perspectives pointed out in the explored frameworks. This article concludes that there are aspects lacking in the studied frameworks concerning specific media competences proposed by international institutions (such as UNESCO or the European Commission) and experts. There is also an absence of specific and practical criteria that measure different citizens' skills. The studies analyzed principally focus on the personal skills of individuals (especially their ability to use ICT), from which broad reviews of the social competences of individual and environmental factors that determine the promotion and development of media literacy has been carried out
