The nutritive value of a dual purpose forage, its structural and morphological composition, seed production capacity are determining characteristics in the selection of a genotype. The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of cutting management on yield components, physiological quality of the seeds in the subsequent generation. Experiment I: the field cutting management was performed, and the yield components and the physiological quality of the seeds were evaluated. Experiment II: where the components of plant yield and physiological quality of the seeds were evaluated. The cutting managements affect the components of yield, such as thousand seed weight and seed mass per cob, as well as germination, first germination count and seedling dry mass of dual purpose wheat. In the generation that evaluates the quality of the seeds produced, the cuts do not influence the physiological quality of the seeds, however, they affect the yield components, number of cobs per plant, one thousand seed weight and seed mass per cob.

Storage is a factor that can affect seed quality as a function of latent damages. The losses that most contribute to the reduction in germination and vigor during storage are those caused by humidity, mechanical and temperature-related, that may interfere with seed quality throughout storage. The aim of this study was evaluating the physiological quality of maize seeds produced in two environments and classified in different formats compared to storage periods. The experiment was carried out in the 2016 harvest in two cultivation environments: Entre-Ijuís, RS and Pelotas, RS. Seeds were stratified by thickness through sieves with oblong holes and stratified into small round, large round, small flat and large flat. Growing environments influence the physiological characteristics of maize seeds. The flat and large format seeds have superior physiological quality for the measured physiological characters. The small and round seeds present lower values for germination, first germination count, emergence speed index, shoot dry matter of emergence seedlings and shoot dry matter of germination seedlings. Corn seeds when stored under controlled conditions remain for long periods without causing decreases in physiological quality.

This work was aimed at evidencing the agronomic performance and linear and canonical associations of Quinoa crop grown Rio Grande do Sul state. The trials were carried out in the municipality of Pelotas - Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. The experimental design was randomized blocks, with three Quinoa genotypes, being them Altiplano, Salcedo and BRS Piabiru, arranged in four replicates. The morphological differentiation of quinoa genotypes occurs through the number of teeth expressed by leaves. Quinoa seed yield is based on the joint action of mass of one thousand seeds, number of seeds per inflorescence and number of seeds per plant, being the Altiplano and Salcedo genotypes considered superior. Seed yield components of quinoa plants are potentialized by plant height, petiole length, leaf teeth number and flower length. The definition of agronomic performance, linear and canonical associations is a pioneer study for this species and may be used in future studies with pseudocereals focused on seed science and technology.

The study aimed to evaluate the effects of seeds dressing in the initial establishment of irrigated rice and in the tolerance to herbicides when submitted to low temperatures. The study comprehended two experiments, where the first stage was realized at the Laboratory of Seeds and Technology of the Plants Science Department of the Federal University of Pelotas. Experiment 1: Effect of different seed dressings under the physiologic potential of irrigated rice seeds and experiment 2: Effect of the seeds dressing in the initial establishment of irrigated rice in different sowing seasons in field. The treatment with dietholate and the combining of dietholate + fipronil + carboxina + tiram, negatively influenced the germination and the vigor tests in both temperatures, decreasing the physiologic performance of rice seeds in lab. When taken to field, the seeds dressing did not influence the analyzed factors, being dependent of the herbicide applying and the sowing season. Besides presenting phytotoxicity, the rice plants presented detoxification power from the herbicide, being possible to analyze this fact, since there was higher number of tillers, resulting in higher number of panicles resulting in higher productivities.

The climate unpredictability causes long periods of drought, becoming the main risk factor in soybeans production fields and consequent losses to farmers in Brazil and worldwide. As sessile organisms, plants are constantly challenged by a wide range of environmental stresses, including drought. Growth constraints and stress due to these environmental changes result in reduced yield and significant harvesting losses. The response to abiotic stresses is a very complex phenomenon, since several stages of plant development can be affected by a particular stress and often several stresses affect the plant simultaneously. In order to mitigate the damages caused by the climate, new soybean cultivars adapted to the drought and the diversified climate are necessary, as well as technological advances in the production of soybeans that must advance with the increase of cultivated area. Therefore, the mechanisms underlying tolerance and adaptation to stress have been the focus of intensive research. In this sense, the objective of this review is to provide an overview of the evolution of genetic improvement regarding the search for more drought-tolerant cultivars, as well as to verify which strategies are used in the genetic improvement of soybean in the search of these genotypes.

The development of new genotypes and their availability to the agricultural market is decisive for the success of the Brazilian soybean production chain. This study aimed to estimate the components of variance and genetic parameters of aspects of agronomic importance and to predict the selection of transgressive soybean populations and families based on the agronomic ideotype. The segregating families were conducted in an enlarged block design, composed of 285 F3 segregating families corresponding to the unusual treatments, and together with seven commercial cultivars assigned as common treatments, arranged in four replications. The characters of agronomic interest were measured the first pod insertion height, plant height, number of pods on the main stem, number of pods on the branches, pods containing only one seed, pods containing two seeds, pods containing three seeds, pods containing four seeds and seed mass. Were estimated additive genetic variance, genetic variance of the F3 segregating families, genetic variance of F2 segregating population, residual variance, phenotypic variance, narrow sense heritability, coefficient of determination for the effects of the F3 segregating family, coefficient of determination for the effects of the progeny, genetic variation coefficient, residual variation coefficient and predicted genetic ranking for the best F2 segregating populations and F3 segregating families. The pronounced additive genetic gains in the progeny showed higher values for the characters measured: first pod insertion height with 1.84%, for the family and population, the additivity presented the highest values for the number of pods with four grains. The selection of the progenies through the agronomic ideotype based on the greatest genetic gains of the morphological characters weighted by the largest seed mass will thus lead these populations to joint selection for the other yield components.

The barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) is a cereal of extreme economic and social importance, due to its wide use, which varies from human and animal consumption, use in chemical and brewing industries. This specie, as for many other, is widely affected by unfavorable environmental conditions, inducing a state of stress in the plants, which, depends on the specie, duration, severity, development stage, affect structure and genotype. Among the main factors causing stress in plants, the abiotic stress stands out, such as high and low temperatures, hydric restriction or excess, salt excess, mineral toxicity and nutritional shortages. The present study has the purpose of expose, as a review, the effects of unfavorable environmental factors in barley and the role of genetic breeding.

The aimed to evaluate the influence of different glyphosate formulations in nodulation, agronomic performance and RR soybean seeds yield, grown in two sowing periods. The experimental design was the casualized blocks with treats disposed in four replicates, being organized in factorial scheme, two seeding periods x five glyphosate formulations. The measured characters were number of nodules per plant, number of active nodules, number of inactive nodules, height of the first legume insertion, plant height, number of legumes per plant, number of seeds per plant, mass of thousand seeds and yield of seeds per plant. The isopropylamine salt influences nodular activity, number of vegetables and seeds per plant, as well as seed yield. Maize breeding faces several challenges when the matter is abiotic stresses. For many years, the focus was to develop genotypes adapted to optimal environmental conditions, however, the need to ensure yields under unsuitable and unstable conditions of a climate-changing world is undeniable. Therefore, this review is addressed to the main abiotic stresses that jeopardize maize production worldwide, presenting an overview regarding losses and impacts imposed by them, stating what has been achieved through conventional and molecular plant breeding techniques, and the future prospects on this subject. The conventional breeding added to molecular techniques bring great expectations for developing abiotic stresses tolerant maize genotypes. Universities and research companies worldwide have contributed to expand and spread basic and essential knowledge, however, the entrance of large multinational companies might revolutionize the field. Genetic modified hybrids and projects of continental coverage will introduce many innovations and alternatives to ensure food security for the increasingly growing world population.

There is influence of size of the wheat seeds in the traits of importance agronomic. Thus, this study aimed to determine the effect of the size of wheat seeds in the yield components and grains productivity. The study was carried out in the 2016 harvest. Apllied is the experimental design was a randomized block, organized in factorial design, with three wheat cultivars x six seed lots x five sizes of sieves, the treatments were arranged in three replicates. Were measured characters as grain yield (kg ha-1), mass of thousand seeds (g), hectoliter mass (kg hct-1) and economic analysis obtained through profitability per hectare (R$ ha-1). The size of wheat seeds influences the number of spikelets of the principal plant, number of primary and secondary seed, number of seeds of the principal plant, primary and secondary tillers, productivity, mass of thousand seeds and hectoliter weight. The standardization of wheat seeds provides benefits to the productive yield of wheat plants. The objective of evaluating the response of wheat seed size from cultivars and lots, as well as the canonical interrelations of the physical and physiological characteristics of the seeds. The experimental design was a randomized block, organized in a factorial scheme, with three wheat genotypes (Quartzo, Ametista and TBIO Sinuelo) x six seed lots (A, B, C, D, E and F) x five sizes of sieves (I: standard sample used by farmers and seed producers (AO), II: seeds> 3,00 mm, III: seeds 2,5 to 2,99 mm, IV: seeds between 2,0 and 2,49 mm and V: < 2.0 mm), and the treatments were arranged in four replicates. The characters measured were: one thousand seed mass, hectoliter weight, germination, first germination count, germination speed index, field emergence, emergence speed index, seedling shoot length, seedling root length, seedling shoot dry mass, seedling root dry mass and electrical conductivity. There is variability of the physical and physiological attributes due to the dimensions of the wheat seeds, being these specific for the effects of cultivar and seed lots. Larger wheat seeds potentiate seed vigor in general for wheat cultivars.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the yield and physiological quality of bean seeds in two agricultural crops, and the chemical composition of seedlings submitted to adverse temperatures during germination. For the field experiment, a randomized block design was used, using five genotypes, BRS Embaixador, IPR Tuiuiú, Guabiju, Carioquinha and Mouro, arranged in four replicates. The experimental units were composed of five lines with five meters in length, where 25 plants were randomly collected per experimental unit to measure the characters of interest. For laboratory testing the seeds produced were submitted to three temperatures (15, 25 and 35°C) during germination under controlled conditions. The evaluated characters were: grain yield, mass of a thousand seeds, germination, first germination count, starch content, soluble sugar, soluble protein and total amino acids. The data were submitted to analysis of variance and later compared by the Tukey test. Yield per plant revealed changes between the agricultural crops, as well as among the genotypes tested. Germination and the first germination count revealed higher magnitudes in seeds produced by BRS Embaixador, IPR Tuiuiu and Carioquinha genotypes. For all genotypes, protein and amino acid levels were higher in seedlings submitted to lower temperatures. The levels of starch and total soluble sugars were higher in seedlings produced at 35°C. Yield, seed physiological quality and chemical composition of seedlings are influenced by the crop and genotypes tested.

With the increase of the world population, we are looking for alternatives to supply the world's food demand. In view of this, and of the numerous benefits of the exploration of new crops as it happens with the pseudocereals, it becomes increasingly necessary studies on this subject, therefore, results that allow the implantation of these crops in the productive sector are of extreme relevance, with the purpose of facilitating its production, management and consequently its commercialization. The objective of this study was to evaluate the physical properties of amaranth and quinoa seeds. As results for the water content of 13.1% and 12.5% of amaranth and quinoa, the porosity results were, respectively, 35.5 and 39.7% and the slope angle of 25° amaranth and 28,26° quinoa. The length, width and thickness were 0.825 mm, 1.287 mm and 1.389 mm for amaranth seeds and 2.025 mm, 2.04 mm, 1.06 mm for quinoa. Sphericity was 93% for amaranth seed and 52% for quinoa. When the electrical property was evaluated, the permissivity values were 3.26 in amaranth and 3.10 in quinoa. The specific mass and weight of one thousand amaranth seeds were 804.7 kg m-³ and 0.78 g and for quinoa seeds of 720.7 kg m-³ and 3.01 g.

Soybean is the main economic crop of Brazilian agribusiness, and the extreme south of the country is considered a new agricultural frontier. The objective of this study was to evaluate the components of the yield and agronomic performance of soybean genotypes in the south of Rio Grande do Sul as well as to verify the linear relationships of the measured characters. The study was carried out in the municipality of Pelotas, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, in the crop harvest 2016. The experimental design was a randomized complete block design, containing 25 soybean genotypes arranged in four replicates. The experimental units were composed of five sowing lines, spaced by 0.45 meters and three meters in length. The measured characters were: first pod insertion height, plant height, number of branches, length of branches, number of pods in the main stem, number of pods in the branches, number of pods with one, two, three and four seeds, contributing to the pod mass with one, two, three and four seeds. The data were submitted to analysis of variance at 5% of probability, where for the significant characters the averages were compared by the Duncan’s test and Pearson's linear correlation was performed in order to identify the tendency of association among the measured characters. The genotypes DM 6159IPRO, BS2606 IPRO, BMX Magna, BMX Potência, TMG7062 IPRO, LG 60163 IPRO revealed superior characters, which can positively influence grain yield. There is a correlation among the morphological characters of the soybean cultivated in southern Brazil between the number of pods in the main stem and the number of pods in the branches, as well as between the number of pods with two seeds and the number of pods in the branches.

Biofortification and bioactive compounds enrichment of maize genotypes is a great alternative for mitigating micronutrients deficiency in human and animal diet, and also for improving the benefits of maize for human health. This work aimed to estimate variance components and genetic parameters of bioactive compounds and micronutrients to predict superior maize hybrids from different genetic bases, and to apply the RELM/BLUP methodology to multivariate techniques. The inbreed lines were crossed and the F1 hybrids were grown for evaluations in 2014/2015 and 2015/2016 growing seasons, respectively. Then, micronutrients and bioactive compounds related traits were evaluated. The variance components and genetic parameters were estimated by REML methodology. The BLUP methodology was employed to predict genetic values and to verify the percentages of genetic gain with selection. The predicted genetic values were applied to estimate genetic distances by the Mean Euclidean Distance. The relative contribution of each trait to genetic divergence was evaluated and the principal components analysis determined, proposing the genotypes that are potentially capable to increase a given trait. The presence of genetic variability was evidenced among genotypes, while some of them presented potential for increasing specific traits. The top cross hybrid L64XAS1590 showed the highest estimates for increasing antioxidant-responsible traits, and micronutrients contents such as manganese, cooper, iron and zinc. In general, there was the possibility of achieving genetic gains with selection under application of biofortified and bioactive compounds to enhance maize hybrids through conventional breeding. However, it does not applicable for iron content due to its low estimate of broad sense heritability.

Maize (Zea mays L.) is the cereal most produced in the world, due to its wide scope and utilization in human and animal diet. This study aims to evaluate the agronomic performance of intervarietal maize hybrids, as well as the linear associations, interrelations of cause and effect, and the genotypes dispersion through canonical variates. The experiment was conducted in the agricultural year of 2014/2015. The crosses that originated the hybrids were carried out on the growing season of 2013/2014 and hybrids evaluated on 2014/2015. The hybrids were arranged in randomized blocks, being 13 treatments with five repetitions. The measured characters were: plant height, spike insertion height, stem diameter, spike diameter, spike length, spike mass, number of rows of grains per spike, number of grains per row, cob diameter, cob mass, spike grains mass, mass of a thousand grains, grain length and grain yield. The data were submitted to analysis of variance and mean values compared by the Tukey test at 5% of probability. The Pearson’s linear correlation analysis and path analysis were performed using grain yield as a dependent character. Furthermore, the analysis of canonical variables was carried out. The hybrid H5: G3 X G4 revealed higher grain yield, spike grains mass, number of grains per row and spike diameter. Grain yield of intervarietal hybrids presented positive correlations with the traits such as stem diameter, spike diameter, spike length, number of grains per row, mass of a thousand grains, grain length and spike grains mass. Spike diameter and spike length presented higher direct effects on grain yield of intervarietal hybrids. The canonical variates revealed the formation of five phenotypically distinct groups of intervarietal hybrids.

In Brazil, Asian rust is the main disease that affects the soybean crop, which is responsible for the great inventiveness of financial resources with fungicides to control this pathogen. The objective of this work was to evaluate the grain yield and economic viability of the different combinations of fungicides used in the soybean crop. The experiment was conducted in the 2014/2015 agricultural year in the experimental field located in the municipality of Campo Novo-RS, Brazil. The treatments used correspond to 15 combinations of fungicides, and these were applied at different times during the soybean cycle. The characters measured weremass of 1000 seeds, grain yield, gross income, fungicide cost, total cost, net income, income gain and profitability. The grain yield of soybeans was reduced by 35% due to the absence of fungicide applications. Combinations of fungicides that provide the highest yields and profitability for soybean are based on the use of different active principles such asstrobilurins and carboxamides.

The aim of study is to estimate the variance components and genetic parameters (REML), as well as to predict the genetic value (BLUP) of F3 families of common black beans for the components of seed production. The experimental design was augmented blocks, where the 83 F3 families were arranged only in each block, and the commercial controls were organized in three replicates. The additive genetic effects were determinant for plant height and first pod insertion height. The pronounced effects of the environment are expressed for the number of pods, seeds and seed mass per plant. Potentiality in the selection of higher F3 families are revealed through the 2CBRS population for plant height and first pod insertion height, for the components of seed yield the selections should be directed to the populations 2CARS and 1FVRS. The number of seeds and seed mass per plant were potentiated in more than 28% of the selected F3 families, and pronounceable genetic gains are obtained by the selection of families 66, 65 and 67. The inferences obtained in this study present theoretical and practical foundation, and can be applied in future studies of breeding and production of common black bean seeds.

Melon (Cucumis melo L.) is one of the most consumed vegetables in the world. In recent decades, sustainable production alternatives have been sought, replacing traditional substrates with the use of substrates from organic waste. The objective of this work was to evaluate the initial development of melon seedlings in different substrates and depths of sowing, as well as to identify relationships among the characters evaluated. The experiment was conducted in a greenhouse, with a randomized block experimental design arranged in a 3x4 factorial scheme, with three substrates (grape husk, rice husk, commercial substrate) and four sowing depths (1.0, 2, 0, 3.0 and 4.0 cm), with four replicates. The evaluated characters were index of emergency speed, shoot length and root, green and dry mass of the root and shoot. The analysis of variance revealed significant interaction between substrates x depth of sowing for the character of shoot length and root length. Pearson's linear correlation revealed two significant positive associations. It is concluded that melon seedlings are affected by the substrate types and depths of sowing, the substratum based on grape bark can replace commercial substrates, the bark of charred rice does not have a positive response in the production of melon seedlings and the correlation Of Pearson showed a positive relationship between characters.

The objective of this work was to apply the phenotypic multicarter selection and predictive genetic for the attributes of the yield of common black bean seeds in the segregating generations F2, F3 and F4.The experimental design was augmented blocks, where the BRS Esplendor (BE), BRS Supremo (BS) and IPR Tiziu (IT) genotypes were used as controls arranged in four replicates, the other treatments were organized in a unique way in the experiment, the F2 segregating generation being represented by 36 common black bean populations, F3 segregating generation composed of 72 families and the F4 segregating generation formed by 44 families. The multicarter phenotypic index provided the simultaneous selection for the number and mass of seeds per plant, independent of the segregating generation of common black bean.Multicarter genetic variation is superior for the F3 segregating generation, with pronounced environmental effects on the F4 generation.The F4 segregating families express superiority to the genetic gain and magnitude of superior genotypes in relation to the commercial controls, where high genetic increase is exposed between the F3 to F4selection.The use of the phenotypic index expresses applicability to the selection of common black bean genotypes to increase seed yield.

Understanding of sowing in an ideal season for each region and cultivar is essential for the crop to reach each of its stages in more favorable climatic conditions. The objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of different sowing times on agronomic attributes of two soybean cultivars and the physiological quality of soybean seeds in soil type Eutrophic Haplic Planosol. The experimental design was completely randomized, in a factorial scheme 4 x 2, with four sowing times and two soybean cultivars, with eight replications. The sowing was executed at the beginning and end of November (1st and 2nd epochs) and beginning and end of January (3rd and 4th epochs), using the cultivars: Fundacep 64 RR and BMX Potência RR. The experiment was carried out in polyethylene vessels with volumetric capacity of 10 liters. The morphological attributes of the plants were evaluated, such as: height, stem diameter, number of pods and seeds per plant, 1000 seed weight, as well as seed germination and vigor. Seeding after January 1st negatively affected the agronomic behavior of soybean plants, with reduction of plant height, stem diameter, number of pods and seeds per plant. The sowing on November 1st favored the obtaining of seeds with lower physical quality in terms of 1000 seed weight; however, seeds with superior physiological performance. Late sowing showed an alternative for the production of soybean seeds in the South region of Rio Grande do Sul, mainly due to the higher quality of the seeds produced in this period.

The objective of this study was to evaluate soybean growth, conversion of solar energy and seed vigour of plants cultivated with different nitrogen doses. We carried out experiments using the cultivar BMX Potencia RR belongs to the maturation group 6.7, presenting an indeterminate growth habit. The experimental design was completely randomised with four replications in a 4 x 8 factorial scheme (four nitrogen doses and eight collection periods). In the Vn stage of soybean development, we applied four different nitrogen fertilisation doses, i.e. 0, 25, 50 and 75 Kg N ha-1 in the form of urea (45% of N). We evaluated leaf area (Af), leaf dry mass (Wf), stem (Wc), roots (Wr) and pods (Wv), dry matter production rate (Ct), relative growth rate (Rw), net assimilation (Ea), rate, leaf area ratio (Sa), solar energy conversion factor (ξ), leaf area ratio (Fa) and leaf mass (Fw), dry matter partition between plant structures, seedling emergence (E) and the emergence speed index (IVE) of the seedlings originated from the seeds produced. The experiment was conducted throughout the crop cycle. Nitrogen application positively impacted soybean growth; a nitrogen dose of 50 Kg ha-1 resulted in highest values of Wt. However, plants subjected to 75 Kg N ha-1 reached higher Rw and L values. Nitrogen fertilisation applied in the stage Vn facilitated plant growth, enhanced the conversion of solar energy and resulted in higher seed vigour.

The main aim of this study was to investigate the phenotypic correlation of yield component traits using several environmental stratifications methods. We also aimed to propose cause and effect of relationships for grain yield components in soybean genotypes under several environmental conditions. The tests were conducted in the agricultural year of 2013/2014 in four growing sites in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. The experimental arrangement was randomized blocks in factorial scheme (11 x 4), consisting eleven soybean genotypes in four environments with four repetitions each. All the growing environments Tapera-RS, Derrubadas-RS and Frederico Westphalen-RS were classified as favorable for soybean cultivation. The traits such as total number of pods per plant, number of branches and number of pods with 2-3 grains showed significant linear correlations with grain yield in both methods of analysis. The path analysis was applied under favorable and unfavorable environments to accurately estimate the direct and indirect effect of traits on soybean grain yield. The mass of a thousand grains and plant height were highly associated with grain yield but mostly influenced by environmental effects. The total number of pods should be prioritized for selecting superior soybean genotypes due to its direct and indirect effects on grain yield. It has shown constant in all environmental conditions. The direct effects of number of branches and number of pods (with one grain) presented distinct effects on yield in favorable and unfavorable environments.

Rice (Oryza sativa L.) presents a strategic role in social and economic levels. The aim of this study was to elucidate the presence of genetic variability for the genus Oryza, and the possibility of using genotypes with wild characteristics in rice breeding programs. The Oryza genus shows great genetic variability through wild genotypes available in the most varied environments around the world. The negative effects imposed by abiotic stresses such as flood, salinity, low temperatures, water deficiency and high temperatures may be minimized by the efficient identification of a genetic variability source from the Oryza genus. Among the main wild species presented by the Oryza genus, Oryza glumaepatula stands out being an active source of germplasm. The occurrence and preservation of genetic variability of Oryza genus is indispensable to obtain new rice genotypes, to guarantee food security for the human population, as well as to develop genotypes that adapt to climatic changes and natural adversities.
