[Abridged] Context. The Galactic Center supermassive black hole is well known to exhibit transient peaks of flux density on a daily basis across the spectrum. Recent infrared and millimeter observations have strengthened the case for the association between these flares and circular orbital motion in the vicinity of the event horizon. The strongly polarized synchrotron radiation associated with these events leads to specific observables called QU loops, that is, looping motion in the Stokes QU plane of linear polarization. Aims. We want to deepen the understanding of the QU loops associated with orbiting hot spots. We compute such loops in Minkowski and Schwarzschild spacetimes in order to determine which aspects of the observed patterns are due to special- or general-relativistic phenomena. Results. We show that QU loops in Minkowski spacetime at low or moderate inclination i < 45 deg share all qualitative features of Schwarzschild QU loops: there exist QU loops for all setups considered (including face-on view and vertical magnetic field), there may be one or two QU loops per orbital period for a vertical magnetic field configuration, there are always two QU loops in case of a toroidal magnetic field. We provide analytical formulas in Minkowski spacetime to explain the details of this behavior. Moreover, we analyze the flux variation of the hot spot and show that it is dictated either by the angular dependence of the radiative transfer coefficients, or by relativistic beaming. In the former case, this can lead to extreme flux ratios even at moderate inclination. Finally, we highlight the increasing mirror asymmetry of the Schwarzschild QU track with increasing inclination and show that this behavior is a specific Schwarzschild feature caused by light bending., Comment: 20 pages, 14 figures, submitted to A&A

Sagittarius A*, the supermassive black hole at the center of our galaxy, exhibits episodic near-infrared flares. The recent monitoring of three such events by the GRAVITY instrument has shown that some flares are associated with orbital motions in the close environment of the black hole with super Keplerian velocity. We develop a semi-analytic model of Sagittarius~A* flares based on an ejected large plasmoid, inspired by recent particle-in-cell global simulations of black hole magnetospheres. We model the infrared astrometric and photometric signatures associated to this model. We consider a spherical large plasmoid ejected along a conical orbit around the black hole. This plasmoid is assumed to be formed by successive mergers of smaller plasmoids produced through magnetic reconnection. Non-thermal electrons are injected in the plasmoid. We compute the evolution of the electron-distribution under the influence of synchrotron cooling. We solve the radiative transfer problem and transport the radiation along null geodesics of the Schwarzschild spacetime. We also take into account the quiescent radiation of the accretion flow, on top of which the flare evolves. For the first time, we successfully account for the astrometric and flux variations of the GRAVITY data with a flare model that incorporates an explicit modeling of the emission mechanism. We find good agreement between the prediction of our model and the recent data. In particular, the azimuthal velocity is set by the magnetic field line it belongs to, which is anchored in the inner parts of the accretion flow, hence the super-Keplerian motion. The astrometric track is also shifted with respect to the center of mass due to the quiescent radiation, in agreement with the difference measured with the GRAVITY data. We use PIONIER data from the ESO archive and GRAVITY data that were obtained in June 2017 with the four 8m telescopes. We use a parametric disk model and the 3D radiative transfer code MCFOST to reproduce the Spectral Energy Distribution and match the interferometric observations. To match the SED , our model requires a stellar luminosity of 2.5 Lsun, higher than any previously determined values. Such a high value is needed to accommodate the circumstellar extinction caused by the highly inclined disk, which has been neglected in previous studies. While using an effective temperature of 4800 K determined through high-resolution spectroscopy, we derive a stellar radius of 2.29 Rsun. These revised fundamental parameters, when combined with the mass estimates available , lead to an age of 0.5-2.0 Ma for RY Lup, in better agreement with the age of the Lupus association than previous determinations. Our disk model nicely reproduces the interferometric GRAVITY data and is in good agreement with the PIONIER ones. We derive an inner rim location at 0.12~au from the central star. This model corresponds to an inclination of the inner disk of 50deg, which is in mild tension with previous determinations of a more inclined outer disk from SPHERE (70 deg in NIR) and ALMA(67 $\pm$5 deg) images, but consistent with the inclination determination from the ALMA CO spectra (55$\pm$5deg). Increasing the inclination of the inner disk to 70 deg leads to a higher line-of-sight extinction and therefore requires a higher stellar luminosity of 4.65 Lsun to match the observed flux levels. This luminosity would translate to a stellar radius of 3.13~Rsun, leading to an age of 2-3~Ma, and a stellar mass of about 2 Msun, in disagreement with the observed dynamical mass estimate of 1.3-1.5 Msun. The supermassive black hole Sagittarius A* (Sgr A*) is located at the dynamical center of the Milky Way. In a recent study of the X-ray flaring activity from Sgr A* using Chandra, XMM-Newton and Swift data from 1999 to 2015, it has been argued that the bright flaring rate has increased from 2014 Aug. 31 while the faint flaring rate decreased from around 2013 Aug. We tested the persistence of these changes in the flaring rates with new X-ray data of Sgr A* obtained in 2016-2018 (total exposure of 1.4Ms). We detected 9 flares in the Chandra data and 5 flares in the Swift data that we added to the set of 107 previously detected flares. We computed the intrinsic distribution of flare fluxes and durations corrected for the sensitivity bias using a new method that allowed us to take the error on the flare fluxes and durations into account. From this intrinsic distribution, we determined the average flare detection efficiency for each Chandra, XMM-Newton, and Swift observation. After correcting each observational exposure for this efficiency, we applied the Bayesian blocks algorithm on the concatenated flare arrival times. As in the above-mentioned study, we also searched for a flux and fluence threshold that might lead to a change in flaring rate. We improved the previous method by computing the average flare detection efficiencies for each flux and fluence range. The Bayesian block algorithm did not detect any significant change in flaring rate of the 121 flares. However, we detected an increase by a factor of about three in the flaring rate of the most luminous and most energetic flares that have occurred since 2014 Aug. 30. The X-ray activity of Sgr A* has increased for more than four years. The inner regions of the discs of high-mass young stellar objects (HMYSOs) are still poorly known due to the small angular scales and the high visual extinction involved. We deploy near-infrared (NIR) spectro-interferometry to probe the inner gaseous disc in HMYSOs and investigate the origin and physical characteristics of the CO bandhead emission (2.3-2.4 $\mu$m). We present the first GRAVITY/VLTI observations at high spectral (R=4000) and spatial (mas) resolution of the CO overtone transitions in NGC 2024 IRS2. The continuum emission is resolved in all baselines and is slightly asymmetric, displaying small closure phases ($\leq$8$^{\circ}$). Our best ellipsoid model provides a disc inclination of 34$^{\circ}$$\pm$1$^{\circ}$, a disc major axis position angle of 166$^{\circ}$$\pm$1$^{\circ}$, and a disc diameter of 3.99$\pm$0.09 mas (or 1.69$\pm$0.04 au, at a distance of 423 pc). The small closure phase signals in the continuum are modelled with a skewed rim, originating from a pure inclination effect. For the first time, our observations spatially and spectrally resolve the first four CO bandheads. Changes in visibility, as well as differential and closure phases across the bandheads are detected. Both the size and geometry of the CO-emitting region are determined by fitting a bidimensional Gaussian to the continuum-compensated CO bandhead visibilities. The CO-emitting region has a diameter of 2.74$\pm^{0.08}_{0.07}$ mas (1.16$\pm$0.03 au), and is located in the inner gaseous disc, well within the dusty rim, with inclination and $PA$ matching the dusty disc geometry, which indicates that both dusty and gaseous discs are coplanar. Physical and dynamical gas conditions are inferred by modelling the CO spectrum. Finally, we derive a direct measurement of the stellar mass of $M_*\sim$14.7$^{+2}_{-3.6}$ M$_{\odot}$ by combining our interferometric and spectral modelling results., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A letters

Context. The Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) collaboration recently obtained first images of the surroundings of the supermassive compact object M87* at the center of the galaxy M87. Aims. We want to develop a simple analytic disk model for the accretion flow of M87*. Compared to general-relativistic magnetohydrodynamic (GRMHD) models, it has the advantage of being independent of the turbulent character of the flow, and controlled by only few easy-to-interpret, physically meaningful parameters. We want to use this model to predict the image of M87* assuming that it is either a Kerr black hole, or an alternative compact object. Methods. We compute the synchrotron emission from the disk model and propagate the resulting light rays to the far-away observer by means of relativistic ray tracing. Such computations are performed assuming different spacetimes (Kerr, Minkowski, non-rotating ultracompact star, rotating boson star or Lamy spinning wormhole). We perform numerical fits of these models to the EHT data. Results. We discuss the highly-lensed features of Kerr images and show that they are intrinsically linked to the accretion-flow properties, and not only to gravitation. This fact is illustrated by the notion of secondary ring that we introduce. Our model of spinning Kerr black hole predicts mass and orientation consistent with the EHT interpretation. The non-Kerr images result in similar quality of the numerical fits and may appear very similar to Kerr images, once blurred to the EHT resolution. This implies that a strong test of the Kerr spacetime may be out of reach with the current data. We notice that future developments of the EHT could alter this situation. Conclusions. Context. The properties of the accretion flow surrounding the supermassive central black hole of the Galaxy, Sgr A*, will be scrutinized by the new-generation instrument GRAVITY and the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT). Developing fast, robust, and simple models of such flows is thus important and very timely. Aims. We want to model the quiescent emission of Sgr A* from radio to mid-infrared by considering a magnetized compact torus and an extended jet. Results. We find perfect spectral fit both for face-on and edge-on views. These best fits give parameters values very close to that found by the most recent numerical simulations, which are much more complex than our model. The intrinsic radio size of Sgr A* is found to be in reasonable agreement with the centimetric observed constraints. Our best-fit infrared spectral index is in perfect agreement with the latest constraints. Our emission region at 1.3 mm, although larger than the Doeleman et al. (2008) Gaussian best-fit, does contain bright features at the 40 microarcsec scale. EHT-reconstructed images show that torus/jet-specific features persist after the reconstruction procedure, and that these features are sensitive to inclination. Conclusions. The main interest of our model is to give a simple and fast model of the quiescent state of Sgr A*, which gives extremely similar results as compared to state-of-the-art numerical simulations. Our model is easy to use and we publish all the material necessary to reproduce our spectra and images, so that anyone interested can use our results rather straightforwardly. We hope that such a public tool can be useful in the context of the recent and near-future GRAVITY and EHT results. Our model can in particular be easily used to test alternative compact objects models, or alternative gravity theories. SAGE (SagnAc interferometer for Gravitational wavE) is a project for a space observatory based on multiple 12-U CubeSats in geosynchronous orbit. The objective is a fast track mission which would fill the observational gap between LISA and ground based observatories. With albeit a lower sensitivity, it would allow early investigation of the nature and event rate of intermediate-mass black hole (IMBH) mergers, constraining our understanding of the universe formation by probing the building up of IMBH up to supermassive black holes. Technically, the CubeSats would create a triangular Sagnac interferometer with 140.000km roundtrip arm length, optimized to be sensitive to gravitational waves at frequencies between 10mHz and 2Hz. The nature of the Sagnac measurement makes it almost insensitive to position error, enabling the use of spacecrafts in ballistic trajectories. The light source and recombination units of the interferometer are based on compact fibered technologies without bulk optics. A peak sensitivity of 23 pm/sqrt(Hz) is expected at 1Hz assuming a 200mW internal laser source and 10-centimeter diameter apertures. Because of the absence of a test mass, the main limitation would come from the non-gravitational forces applied on the spacecrafts. However, conditionally upon our ability to partially post-process the effect of solar wind and solar pressure, SAGE would allow detection of gravitational waves with strains as low as a few 1e-19 within the 0.1 to 1Hz range. Averaged over the entire sky, and including the antenna gain of the Sagnac interferometer, the SAGE observatory would sense equal mass black hole mergers in the 1e4 to 1e6 solar masses range up to a luminosity distance of 800Mpc. Additionally, coalescence of stellar black holes (10Msun) around SMBH (IMBH) forming extreme (intermediate) mass ratio inspirals could be detected within a sphere of radius 200Mpc., Comment: Accepted in Class. Thermal dominated X-ray spectra of neutron stars in quiescent transient X-ray binaries and neutron stars that undergo thermonuclear bursts are sensitive to mass and radius. The mass-radius relation of neutron stars depends on the equation of state that governs their interior. Constraining this relation accurately is thus of fundamental importance to understand the nature of dense matter. In this context we introduce a pipeline to calculate realistic model spectra of rotating neutron stars with hydrogen and helium atmospheres. An arbitrarily fast rotating neutron star with a given equation of state generates the spacetime in which the atmosphere emits radiation. We use the Lorene/nrotstar code to compute the spacetime numerically and the ATM24 code to solve the radiative transfer equations self-consistently. Emerging specific intensity spectra are then ray-traced through the neutron star's spacetime from the atmosphere to a distant observer with the Gyoto code. Here, we present and test our fully relativistic numerical pipeline. To discuss and illustrate the importance of realistic atmosphere models we compare our model spectra to simpler models like the commonly used isotropic color-corrected blackbody emission. We highlight the importance of considering realistic model-atmosphere spectra together with relativistic ray tracing to obtain accurate predictions. We also insist on the crucial impact of the star's rotation on the observables. The second-generation beam combiner at the Very Large Telescope (VLT), GRAVITY, observes the stars orbiting the compact object located at the center of our galaxy, with an unprecedented astrometric accuracy of 10 $\mu$as. The nature of this compact source is still unknown since black holes are not the only candidates explaining the four million solar masses at the Galactic center. Boson stars are such an alternative model to black holes. This paper focuses on the study of trajectories of stars orbiting a boson star and a Kerr black hole. We put in light strong differences between orbits obtained in both metrics when considering stars with sufficiently close pericenters to the compact object, typically $\lesssim 30~M$. Discovery of closer stars to the Galactic center than the S2 star by the GRAVITY instrument would thus be a powerful tool to possibly constrain the nature of the central source., Comment: 30 pages, 20 figures

The goal of this paper is to investigate the detection by GRAVITY of different relativistic effects affecting the astrometric and/or spectroscopic observations of S2 such as the transverse Doppler shift, the gravitational redshift, the pericenter advance and higher-order general relativistic (GR) effects, in particular the Lense-Thirring effect due to the angular momentum of the black hole. We showed that the combination of S2 observations obtained with the GRAVITY instrument and the spectrograph SINFONI (Spectrograph for INtegral Field Observations in the Near Infrared) also installed at the VLT (Very Large Telescope) will lead to the detection of various relativistic effects. Such detections will be possible with S2 monitorings obtained within a few months or years, depending on the effect. Strong constraints on the angular momentum of Sgr~A* (e.g., at $1\sigma~=~0.1$) with the S2 star will be possible with a simple stellar-orbit model without using a ray-tracing code but with approximating the gravitational lensing effect. However, long monitorings are necessary, and we thus must rely on the discovery of closer-in stars near Sgr~A* if we want to efficiently constrain the black hole parameters with stellar orbits in a short time, or monitor the flares if they orbit around the black hole., Comment: 22 pages, 11 figures

We address the astrophysical imaging of a family of deformed Kerr black holes (BHs). These are stationary, asymptotically flat black hole (BH) spacetimes, that are solutions of General Relativity minimally coupled to a massive, complex scalar field: Kerr BHs with scalar hair (KBHsSH). Such BHs bifurcate from the vacuum Kerr solution and can be regarded as a horizon within a rotating boson star. In a recent letter, it was shown that KBHsSH can exhibit very distinct shadows from the ones of their vacuum counterparts. The setup therein, however, considered the light source to be a celestial sphere sufficiently far away from the BH. Here, we analyse KBHsSH surrounded by an emitting torus of matter, simulating a more realistic astrophysical environment, and study the corresponding lensing of light as seen by a very far away observer, to appropriately model ground-based observations of Sgr A*. We find that the differences in imaging between KBHsSH and comparable vacuum Kerr BHs remain, albeit less dramatic than those observed for the corresponding shadows in the previous setup. In particular, we highlight two observables that might allow differentiating KBHsSH and Kerr BHs. The first is the angular size of the photon ring (in a Kerr spacetime) or lensing ring (in a KBHSH spacetime), the latter being significantly smaller for sufficiently non-Kerr-like spacetimes. The second is the existence of an edge in the intensity distribution (the photon ring in Kerr spacetime). This edge can disappear for very non-Kerr-like KBHsSH. It is plausible, therefore, that sufficiently precise Very Long Baseline Interferometric observations of BH candidates can constrain this model., Comment: 17 pages, 8 figures, accepted in PRD

Context. Quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) are a common feature of the power spectrums of X-ray binaries. Currently it is not possible to unambiguously differentiate the large number of proposed models to explain these phenomena through existing observations. Aims. We investigate the observable predictions of a simple model that generates flux modulation: a spiral instability rotating in a thin accretion disk. This model is motivated by the accretion ejection instability (AEI) model for low- frequency QPOs (LFQPOs). We are particularly interested in the inclination dependence of the observables that are associated with this model. Methods. We develop a simple analytical model of an accretion disk, which features a spiral instability. The disk is assumed to emit blackbody radiation, which is ray-traced to a distant observer. We compute pulse profiles and power spectra as observed from infinity. Results. We show that the amplitude of the modulation associated with the spiral rotation is a strong function of inclination and frequency. The pulse profile is quasi-sinusoidal only at low inclination (face-on source). As a consequence, a higher-inclination geometry leads to a stronger and more diverse harmonic signature in the power spectrum. Conclusions. We present how the amplitude depends on the inclination when the flux modulation comes from a spiral in the disk. We also include new observables that could potentially differentiate between models, such as the pulse profile and the harmonic content of the power spectra of high-inclination sources that exhibit LFQPOs. [Abridged] Context. The high-energy radiation from black-hole binaries may be due to the reprocessing of a lamp located on the black hole axis, emitting X-rays. The observed spectrum is made of 3 components: the direct spectrum; the thermal bump; and the reflected spectrum made of the Compton hump and the iron-line complex. Aims. We aim at computing accurately the complete reprocessed spectrum (thermal bump + reflected) of black-hole binaries over the entire X-ray band. We also determine the strength of the direct component. Our choice of parameters is adapted to a source showing an important thermal component. Methods. We compute in full GR the illumination of a thin disk by a lamp along the rotation axis. We use the ATM21 radiative transfer code to compute the spectrum emitted along the disk. We ray trace this local spectrum to determine the reprocessed spectrum as observed at infinity. We discuss the dependence of the local and ray-traced spectra on the emission angle and spin. Results. We show the importance of the angle dependence of the total disk specific intensity spectrum emitted by the illuminated atmosphere when the thermal disk emission if fully taken into account. High spin implies high temperature in the inner regions, so the emitted thermal disk spectrum covers the iron-line complex. As a result we locally observe absorption lines produced in the hot disk atmosphere. Absorption lines are narrow and disappear after ray tracing the local spectrum. Conclusions. Our results mainly highlight the importance of considering the angle dependence of the local spectrum when computing reprocessed spectra, as was already found in a recent study. We simulate an oscillating purely hydrodynamical torus with constant specific angular mo- mentum around a Schwarzschild black hole. The goal is to search for quasi-periodic oscil- lations (QPOs) in the light curve of the torus. The initial torus setup is subjected to radial, vertical and diagonal (combination of radial and vertical) velocity perturbations. The hydro- dynamical simulations are performed using the general relativistic magnetohydrodynamics code Cosmos++ and ray-traced using the GYOTO code. We found that a horizontal velocity perturbation triggers the radial and plus modes, while a vertical velocity perturbation trig- gers the vertical and X modes. Accretion disks play an important role in the evolution of their relativistic inner compact objects. The emergence of a new generation of interferometers will allow to resolve these accretion disks and provide more information about the properties of the central gravitating object. Due to this instrumental leap forward it is crucial to investigate the accretion disk physics near various types of inner compact objects now to deduce later constraints on the central objects from observations. A possible candidate for the inner object is the boson star. Here, we will try to analyze the differences between accretion structures surrounding boson stars and black holes. We aim at analysing the physics of circular geodesics around boson stars and study simple thick accretion tori (so-called Polish doughnuts) in the vicinity of these stars. We realize a detailed study of the properties of circular geodesics around boson stars. We then perform a parameter study of thick tori with constant angular momentum surrounding boson stars. This is done using the boson star models computed by a code constructed with the spectral solver library KADATH. We demonstrate that all the circular stable orbits are bound. In the case of a constant angular momentum torus, a cusp in the torus surface exists only for boson stars with a strong gravitational scalar field. Moreover, for each inner radius of the disk, the allowed specific angular momentum values lie within a constrained range which depends on the boson star considered. We show that the accretion tori around boson stars have different characteristics than in the vicinity of a black hole. Millimeter very long baseline interferometry will soon produce accurate images of the closest surroundings of the supermassive compact object at the center of the Galaxy, Sgr A*. These images may reveal the existence of a central faint region, the so-called shadow, which is often interpreted as the observable consequence of the event horizon of a black hole. In this paper, we compute images of an accretion torus around Sgr A* assuming this compact object is a boson star, i.e. an alternative to black holes within general relativity, with no event horizon and no hard surface. We show that very relativistic rotating boson stars produce images extremely similar to Kerr black holes, showing in particular shadow-like and photon-ring-like structures. Context. The supermassive black hole, Sagittarius (Sgr) A*, in the centre of our Galaxy has the largest angular size in the sky among all astrophysical black holes. Its shadow, assuming no rotation, spans ~ 50 microarcsec. Resolving such dimensions has long been out of reach for astronomical instruments until a new generation of interferometers being operational during this decade. Of particular interest is the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) with resolution ~ 20 microarcsec in the millimeter-wavelength range 0.87 mm - 1.3 mm. Aims. We investigate the ability of the fully general relativistic Komissarov (2006) analytical magnetized torus model to account for observable constraints at Sgr A* in the centimeter and millimeter domains. The impact of the magnetic field geometry on the observables is also studied. Methods. We calculate ray-traced centimeter- and millimeter-wavelength synchrotron spectra and images of a magnetized accretion torus surrounding the central black hole in Sgr A*. We assume stationarity, axial symmetry, constant specific angular momentum and polytropic equation of state. A hybrid population of thermal and non-thermal electrons is considered. Results. We show that the torus model is capable of reproducing spectral constraints in the millimeter domain, and in particular in the observable domain of the EHT. However, the torus model is not yet able to fit the centimeter spectrum. 1.3 mm images at high inclinations are in agreement with observable constraints. Conclusions. The ability of the torus model to account for observations of Sgr A* in the millimeter domain is interesting in the perspective of the future EHT. Such an analytical model allows very fast computations. The black hole at the Galactic centre exhibits regularly flares of radiation, the origin of which is still not understood. In this article, we study the ability of the near-future GRAVITY infrared instrument to constrain the nature of these events. We develop realistic simulations of GRAVITY astrometric data sets for various flare models. We show that the instrument will be able to distinguish an ejected blob from alternative flare models, provided the blob inclination is >= 45deg, the flare brightest magnitude is 14 <= mK <= 15 and the flare duration is >= 1h30., Comment: 11 pages, 9 figures, accepted by MNRAS

In the context of high-frequency quasi-periodic oscillation (HF QPOs) we further explore the appearance of an observable signal generated by hot spots moving along quasi-elliptic trajectories close to the innermost stable circular orbit in the Schwarzschild spacetime. The aim of our investigation is to reveal whether observable characteristics of the Fourier power-spectral density can help us to distinguish between the two competing models, namely, the idea of bright spots orbiting on the surface of an accretion torus versus the scenario of intrinsic oscillations of the torus itself. Context. Some microquasars exhibit millisecond quasi-periodic oscillations (QPO) that are likely related to phenomena occuring in the immediate vicinity of the central black hole. Oscillations of accretion tori have been proposed to model these QPOs. Aims. Here, we aim at determining the observable spectral signature of slender accretion tori surrounding Kerr black holes. We analyze the impact of the inclination and spin parameters on the power spectra. Methods. Ray-traced power spectra of slender tori oscillation modes are computed in the Kerr metric. Results. We show that the power spectral densities of oscillating tori are very sensitive to the inclination and spin parameters. This strong dependency of the temporal spectra on inclination and spin may lead to observable constraints of these parameters. Conclusions. This work goes a step further in the analysis of the oscillating torus QPO model. High frequency quasi-periodic oscillations (HF QPOs) appear in the X-ray variability of several accreting low-mass binaries. In a series of works it was suggested that these QPOs may have connection to inhomogeneities orbiting close to an inner edge of the accretion disc. In this paper we explore the appearance of an observable signal generated by small radiating circular hot spots moving along quasi-elliptic trajectories close to the innermost stable circular orbit in the Schwarzschild spacetime. Our consideration takes into account the capabilities of observatories that have been operating in the past two decades represented by the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) and the proposed future instruments represented by the Large Observatory for X-ray Timing (LOFT). For these purposes we choose such model parameters that lead to lightcurves comparable to those observed in Galactic black hole sources, in particular the microquasar GRS 1915+105. We find that when a weak signal corresponding to the hot-spot Keplerian frequency is around the limits of the RXTE detectability, the LOFT observations can clearly reveal its first and second harmonics. Moreover, in some specific situations the radial epicyclic frequency of the spot can be detected as well. Finally, we also compare the signal produced by the spots to the signal produced by axisymmetric epicyclic disc-oscillation modes and discuss the key differences that could be identified via the proposed future technology. We investigate the possibility to distinguish the small-coupling, slow-rotation black hole solution of Chern-Simons (CS) gravity from the Kerr solution. We develop simulations of electromagnetic observables in the vicinity of CS and Kerr black holes. Context. One of the often discussed models for X-ray binaries high-frequency quasi-periodic oscillations is the oscillating torus model that considers oscillation modes of slender accretion tori. Aims. Here, we aim at developing this model by considering the observable signature of an optically thick slender accretion torus subject to simple periodic deformations. Methods. We compute light curves and power spectra of a slender accretion torus subject to simple periodic deformations: vertical or radial translation, rotation, expansion and shear. Results. We show that different types of deformations lead to very different Fourier power spectra and therefore could be observationally distinguished. Conclusions. This work is a first step in a longer-term study of the observable characteristics of the oscillating torus model. Context. There have been a long string of efforts to understand the source of the variability observed in microquasars, especially concerning the elusive High-Frequency Quasi-Periodic Oscillation. These oscillations are among the fastest phenomena that affect matter in the vicinity of stellar black holes and therefore could be used as probes of strong-field general relativity. Nevertheless, no model has yet gained wide acceptance. Aims. The aim of this article is to investigate the model derived from the occurrence of the Rossby wave instability at the inner edge of the accretion disk. In particular, our goal here is to demonstrate the capacity of this instability to modulate the observed flux in agreement with the observed results. Methods. We use the AMRVAC hydrodynamical code to model the instability in a 3D optically thin disk. The GYOTO ray-tracing code is then used to compute the associated light curve. Results. We show that the 3D Rossby wave instability is able to modulate the flux well within the observed limits.We highlight that 2D simulations allow us to obtain the same general characteristics of the light curve as 3D calculations. With the time resolution we adopted in this work, three dimensional simulations do not give rise to any new observable features that could be detected by current instrumentation or archive data., Comment: 10 pages, 10 figures, accepted by A&A

The ability of the near future second generation VLTI instrument GRAVITY to constrain the properties of the Galactic center black hole is investigated. The Galactic center infrared flares are used as probes of strong-field gravity, within the framework of the hot spot model according to which the flares are the signature of a blob of gas orbiting close to the black hole's innermost stable circular orbit. The galactic central black hole Sgr A* exhibits outbursts of radiation in the near infrared (so-called IR flares). One model of these events consists in a hotspot orbiting on the innermost stable circular orbit (ISCO) of the hole. These outbursts can be used as a probe of the central gravitational potential. One main scientific goal of the second generation VLTI instrument GRAVITY is to observe these flares astrometrically. Here, the astrometric precision of GRAVITY is investigated in imaging mode, which consists in analysing the image computed from the interferometric data. The capability of the instrument to put in light the motion of a hotspot orbiting on the ISCO of our central black hole is then discussed. We find that GRAVITY's astrometric precision for a single star in imaging mode is smaller than the Schwarzschild radius of Sgr A*. The instrument can also demonstrate that a body orbiting on the last stable orbit of the black hole is indeed moving. It yields a typical size of the orbit, if the source is as bright as m_K=14. These results show that GRAVITY allows one to study the close environment of Sgr A*. Having access to the ISCO of the central massive black hole probably allows constraining general relativity in its strong regime. The Large Observatory For x-ray Timing (LOFT) is a mission concept which was proposed to ESA as M3 and M4 candidate in the framework of the Cosmic Vision 2015-2025 program. Thanks to the unprecedented combination of effective area and spectral resolution of its main instrument and the uniquely large field of view of its wide field monitor, LOFT will be able to study the behaviour of matter in extreme conditions such as the strong gravitational field in the innermost regions close to black holes and neutron stars and the supra-nuclear densities in the interiors of neutron stars. The science payload is based on a Large Area Detector (LAD, is greater than 8m2 effective area, 2-30 keV, 240 eV spectral resolution, 1 degree collimated field of view) and a Wide Field Monitor (WFM, 2-50 keV, 4 steradian field of view, 1 arcmin source location accuracy, 300 eV spectral resolution). The WFM is equipped with an on-board system for bright events (e.g., GRB) localization. The trigger time and position of these events are broadcast to the ground within 30 s from discovery. In this paper we present the current technical and programmatic status of the mission.
