1. Snow hydrology in the Moroccan Atlas Mountains

Abstract: Study region: Atlas Mountains located in Morocco. Study focus: Mountainous regions constitute an area of water production, while water is used in downstream plains. In Central Morocco, the Atlas Mountains represent the most important water supply in the country. The solid part of precipitation forms seasonal snowpack. Snowmelt is important for the water supply for different uses in neighbouring plains. Accurate knowledge of snow water equivalent is key information needed by policy-makers to help design and implement appropriate allocation strategies for water resource management. The objective of this paper is to provide a summary of our research activities on snow hydrology in the Atlas Mountains during the past twenty years. The approach combines in situ measurements, remote sensing, and modeling. New hydrological insights for the region: Following a description of the context of the Moroccan Atlas Mountains and the experimental network, an overview of the main results obtained is presented: the characterization of the spatiotemporal dynamics of snow cover; the impact of the North Atlantic Oscillation on the snow-covered area; the snowmelt contribution to the flows of the Atlas rivers; the contribution of snowmelt to surface and groundwater recharge and the quantification of climate change impacts on snow and associated runoff from the Atlas Mountains. We also present challenges and future research perspectives within this topic.

2. Machine-Learning-Based Downscaling of Hourly ERA5-Land Air Temperature over Mountainous Regions

Abstract: In mountainous regions, the scarcity of air temperature (Ta) measurements is a major limitation for hydrological and crop monitoring. An alternative to in situ measurements could be to downscale the reanalysis Ta data provided at high-temporal resolution. However, the relatively coarse spatial resolution of these products (i.e., 9 km for ERA5-Land) is unlikely to be directly representative of actual local Ta patterns. To address this issue, this study presents a new spatial downscaling strategy of hourly ERA5-Land Ta data with a three-step procedure. First, the 9 km resolution ERA5 Ta is corrected at its original resolution by using a reference Ta derived from the elevation of the 9 km resolution grid and an in situ estimate over the area of the hourly Environmental Lapse Rate (ELR). Such a correction of 9 km resolution ERA5 Ta is trained using several machine learning techniques, including Multiple Linear Regression (MLR), Support Vector Regression (SVR), and Extreme Gradient Boosting (Xgboost), as well as ancillary ERA5 data (daily mean, standard deviation, hourly ELR, and grid elevation). Next, the trained correction algorithms are run to correct 9 km resolution ERA5 Ta, and the corrected ERA5 Ta data are used to derive an updated ELR over the area (without using in situ Ta measurements). Third, the updated hourly ELR is used to disaggregate 9 km resolution corrected ERA5 Ta data at the 30-meter resolution of SRTM’s Digital Elevation Model (DEM). The effectiveness of this method is assessed across the northern part of the High Atlas Mountains in central Morocco through (1) k-fold cross-validation against five years (2016 to 2020) of in situ hourly temperature readings and (2) comparison with classical downscaling methods based on a constant ELR. Our results indicate a significant enhancement in the spatial distribution of hourly local Ta. By comparing our model, which included Xgboost, SVR, and MLR, with the constant ELR-based downscaling approach, we were able to decrease the regional root mean square error from approximately 3 ∘C to 1.61 ∘C, 1.75 ∘C, and 1.8 ∘C, reduce the mean bias error from −0.5 ∘C to null, and increase the coefficient of determination from 0.88 to 0.97, 0.96, and 0.96 for Xgboost, SVR, and MLR, respectively.

3. Assessing Irrigation Water Use with Remote Sensing-Based Soil Water Balance at an Irrigation Scheme Level in a Semi-Arid Region of Morocco

Abstract: This study aims to evaluate a remote sensing-based approach to allow estimation of the temporal and spatial distribution of crop evapotranspiration (ET) and irrigation water requirements over irrigated areas in semi-arid regions. The method is based on the daily step FAO-56 Soil Water Balance model combined with a time series of basal crop coefficients and the fractional vegetation cover derived from high-resolution satellite Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) imagery. The model was first calibrated and validated at plot scale using ET measured by eddy-covariance systems over wheat fields and olive orchards representing the main crops grown in the study area of the Haouz plain (central Morocco). The results showed that the model provided good estimates of ET for wheat and olive trees with a root mean square error (RMSE) of about 0.56 and 0.54 mm/day respectively. The model was then used to compare remotely sensed estimates of irrigation requirements (RS-IWR) and irrigation water supplied (WS) at plot scale over an irrigation district in the Haouz plain through three growing seasons. The comparison indicated a large spatio-temporal variability in irrigation water demands and supplies; the median values of WS and RS-IWR were 130 (175), 117 (175) and 118 (112) mm respectively in the 2002–2003, 2005–2006 and 2008–2009 seasons. This could be attributed to inadequate irrigation supply and/or to farmers’ socio-economic considerations and management practices. The findings demonstrate the potential for irrigation managers to use remote sensing-based models to monitor irrigation water usage for efficient and sustainable use of water resources.

4. Multi-Scale Evaluation of the TSEB Model over a Complex Agricultural Landscape in Morocco

Abstract: An accurate assessment of evapotranspiration (ET) is crucially needed at the basin scale for studying the hydrological processes and water balance especially from upstream to downstream. In the mountains, this term is poorly understood because of various challenges, including the vegetation complexity, plant diversity, lack of available data and because the in situ direct measurement of ET is difficult in complex terrain. The main objective of this work was to investigate the potential of a Two-Source-Energy-Balance model (TSEB) driven by the Landsat and MODIS data for estimating ET over a complex mountain region. The complexity is associated with the type of the vegetation canopy as well as the changes in topography. For validating purposes, a large-aperture scintillometer (LAS) was set up over a heterogeneous transect of about 1.4 km to measure sensible (H) and latent heat (LE) fluxes. Additionally, two towers of eddy covariance (EC) systems were installed along the LAS transect. First, the model was tested at the local scale against the EC measurements using multi-scale remote sensing (MODIS and Landsat) inputs at the satellite overpasses. The obtained averaged values of the root mean square error (RMSE) and correlation coefficient (R) were about 72.4 Wm−2 and 0.79 and 82.0 Wm−2 and 0.52 for Landsat and MODIS data, respectively. Secondly, the potential of the TSEB model for evaluating the latent heat fluxes at large scale was investigated by aggregating the derived parameters from both satellites based on the LAS footprint. As for the local scale, the comparison of the latent heat fluxes simulated by TSEB driven by Landsat data performed well against those measured by the LAS (R = 0.69, RMSE = 68.0 Wm−2), while slightly more scattering was observed when MODIS products were used (R = 0.38, RMSE = 99.8 Wm−2). Based on the obtained results, it can be concluded that (1) the TSEB model can be fairly used to estimate the evapotranspiration over the mountain regions; and (2) medium- to high-resolution inputs are a better option than coarse-resolution products for describing this kind of complex terrain.

5. Monitoring Irrigation Consumption Using High Resolution NDVI Image Time Series: Calibration and Validation in the Kairouan Plain (Tunisia)

Abstract: Water scarcity is one of the main factors limiting agricultural development in semi-arid areas. Remote sensing has long been used as an input for crop water balance monitoring. The increasing availability of high resolution high repetitivity remote sensing (forthcoming Sentinel-2 mission) offers an unprecedented opportunity to improve this monitoring. In this study, regional crop water consumption was estimated with the SAMIR software (SAtellite Monitoring of IRrigation) using the FAO-56 dual crop coefficient water balance model fed with high resolution NDVI image time series providing estimates of both the actual basal crop coefficient and the vegetation fraction cover. Three time series of SPOT5 images have been acquired over an irrigated area in central Tunisia along with a SPOT4 time series acquired in the frame of the SPOT4-Take5 experiment, which occurred during the first half of 2013. Using invariant objects located in the scene, normalization of the SPOT5 time series was realized based on the SPOT4-Take5 time series. Hence, a NDVI time profile was generated for each pixel. The operationality and accuracy of the SAMIR tool was assessed at both plot scale (calibration based on evapotranspiration ground measurements) and perimeter scale (irrigation volumes) when several land use types, irrigation and agricultural practices are intertwined in a given landscape. Results at plot scale gave after calibration an average Nash efficiency of 0.57 between observed and modeled evapotranspiration for two plots (barley and wheat). When aggregated for the whole season, modeled irrigation volumes at perimeter scale for all campaigns were close to observed ones (resp. 135 and 121 mm, overestimation of 11.5%). However, spatialized evapotranspiration and irrigation volumes need to be improved at finer timescales.

Abstract: Abstract Agricultural intensification has led to overexploitation of water resources, in particular of the underground resource. Estimating groundwater exploitation remains a serious problem in arid and semi-arid countries such as Algeria. The objective of this work is to estimate volumes of pumped irrigation water using the SAtellite Monitoring of Irrigation (SAMIR) model from satellite imagery. Eleven (11) Landsat-TM images covering an area of 20 hectares of citrus orchards with a drip irrigation system were used. Irrigation volumes simulated by SAMIR were compared with volumes of pumped irrigation water. The latter were recorded digitally by specific programmers over a one-year observation period. The results shows a slight discrepancy between total simulated and observed volumes, 138,782 m3 and 135,688.5 m3, respectively. The index of agreement d and RMSE were 80.94 and 0.11, respectively, while the ratio of observed to simulated volumes varied from 0.76 to 1.27. 65% of the values compared differed by less than 10%. A significant correlation was found between the two methods. This confirms the feasibility of estimating pumping by remote sensing without calculating theoretical crop water requirements.

12. Evaluating the Impact of Topography on Satellite-Derived Evapotranspiration Estimates in the High Atlas Mountains of Morocco

Abstract: Accurate evapotranspiration (ET) estimates in mountainous regions are needed for better understanding the hydrological cycle and managing water resources within watersheds. However, the complex topography of these areas can have significant effects on ET, making it challenging to monitor at all scales. In this study, we sought to improve the accuracy of thermal remote sensing-based ET estimates in the High Atlas region of Morocco by taking into account the effect of topography. To do this, we used two ET models, both driven by LANDSAT optical/thermal data: the Two-Source Energy Balance (TSEB) model and the contextual Water Deficit Index (WDI) model. The meteorological data (such as air temperature, wind speed, and humidity) used to force the models were taken from ERA5-Land reanalysis products and specifically disaggregated at 30 meters to account for elevation effects, while the solar radiation data were obtained using the Samani et al. method to consider sun exposure effects. We compared the ET estimates produced by both models to measurements taken at two Eddy covariance towers in the mountains at different elevations (900 and 3850 m.a.s.l). Our results showed that the TSEB model was able to accurately estimate ET in the region, with a high level of consistency (r² = 0.72, rmse = 43 Wm-2). The relative performance of both TSEB and WDI models was assessed. We also found that topography significantly influences ET in the High Atlas Mountains, emphasizing the importance of considering it when estimating ET at the watershed scale. This outcome can be used to better understand the hydrological cycle and manage water resources in mountainous areas.

13. The contribution of remote sensing data assimilation to simulate daily evapotranspiration of irrigated and non-irrigated crops in semi-arid context

Abstract: Remote sensing data provide valuable information on the spatial distribution of land surface conditions and properties, such as soil moisture, soil and vegetation water status. However, the frequency and resolution of remotely sensed data vary depending on the satellite and sensor. The frequency of observation of thermal infrared that allows an estimation of evapotranspiration is carried out daily by the satellites AQUA and TERRA (res. 1km), every 2 days by Sentinel-3 (res. 1km), 8 days by LANDSAT-8 and 9 (res. 60m) and will be 3 times per period of 8 days by the satellite TRISHNA (res. 60m). In addition, there is no data on days with heavy cloud cover. In order to obtain a daily evaluation of ET, we propose to correct the trajectory of a surface model based on the water balance with the assimilation of ET data from remote sensing. The question is what are the advantages of assimilation compared to open-loop or interpolation of observation. We present our work on modelling evapotranspiration and irrigation at the field scale with the SAMIR (Satellite monitoring of irrigation) model. This is a crop water balance model forced by weather data, soil and crop parameters to simulate the daily components of the water balance. A particle filter method is implemented to assimilate evapotranspiration from remote sensing. This evaluation is performed on several types of crops (wheat, barley and olive), irrigated or not, and in a semi-arid Mediterranean context (Tunisia and Morocco). Compared to open loop simulations, data assimilation allows to quickly reduce the simulation uncertainty. On the other hand, the higher the revisit frequency, the more the simulation uncertainty depends on the observation uncertainty and the model uncertainty is reduced.

14. Quantifying snow sublimation by Eddy covariance measurements on the High Atlas Mountain of Marrakech at Tazaghart plateau, Morocco

Abstract: Mountains areas are often a valuable source of water supply in semi-arid watersheds and play an important role in the hydrologic processes and water balance. Precipitation in high altitude areas is important and forms a seasonal snowpack where water is stored during winter. Therefore, an accurate assessment of sublimation is essential in the overall hydrological cycle. In this context, an Eddy-covariance flux station was installed on the Tazaghart plateau, a wide flat area located at 3850 m.a.s.l. in the High Atlas mountain of Morocco, allowing continuous acquisitions between September 2020 and January 2021, with a timestep of 30 minutes, in order to estimate evapotranspiration and sublimation processes. The observation period included three successive contrasted phases, namely bare soil in September, a period dominated by snowmelt in October after the first snowfall, and finally, after two other snowfall events, a period dominated with sublimation in December.The preliminary data analyses, from September 2020 to January 2021, show a diurnal sublimation cycle with a peak in the early afternoon and the highest relative snow sublimation fluxes that occurred with subzero temperatures, low atmospheric humidity and high incoming radiation. The daily average rate of sublimation measured was 0.41 mm per day. Measured sublimation accounted for 42% and 40% of snow ablation, based on the energy and water balance respectively. The estimated percentages are comparable, which supports the reliable measurements and provides validation of the Eddy covariance method, showing the ability of the Eddy covariance technic to quantify the direct measurements of winter water loss due to the sublimation of snowpacks, especially in higher areas where measurements are relatively difficult and rare.

15. Long-term assessment of water resources and agricultural changes across a semiarid Mediterranean piedmont (High-Atlas, Morocco)

Abstract: The Mediterranean region has experienced accelerated socioeconomic development, primarily due to population expansion. This had a substantial influence on water resource availability, with arid and semiarid areas being the most affected. In Morocco, both surface water and groundwater are already affected by reduced precipitation and massive withdrawals due to the growing demand for irrigated agriculture. The present study is carried out in the piedmont of the High-Atlas Mountains (central Morocco). This agro-hydrosystem is mainly fed by intermittent and ephemeral wadis that cross through the piedmont to the Haouz plain and discharge into the mainstream Tensift wadi. Groundwater is used for drinking purposes and serves as a buffer reserve for irrigation during dry seasons. A comprehensive analysis of hydro-climatological data between 1970 and 2018 is performed together with associated agricultural land use trends over the period 1984-2020. Over 48 years of monitoring, the analyses revealed a substantial decrease of water resources. The standardized precipitation index (SPI) showed three main meteorological drought periods, 1982-1986, 1998-2008 and 2013-2017. A decreasing trend of streamflow by nearly 40% has been noticed. The groundwater level has been decreasing dramatically over the last 2 decades. Surprisingly, this decrease in water resources was associated to an agricultural transition from seasonal crops (cereals) to perennial crops (olive trees). This conversion is likely to exacerbate the water shortage, leading to an overexploitation of groundwater resources to satisfy the growing agricultural demand.Keywords: Mediterranean region, precipitation, groundwater, streamflow, LULC, trends.

16. Estimating the drainage of irrigated areas: a combined crop water balance modeling and remote sensing approach

Abstract: Drainage is the water flowing under the roots when the soil's capacity to hold water is exceeded. It is an important term of the crop water budget, controlling soil salinization, potentially impacting downstream ecosystems, and being a strong indicator of water productivity. Estimating this flux at spatial scales relevant to farmers (plot-scale) and to watershed or irrigation district managers (sub-basin-scale) is thus fundamental for a sustainable management of water, soils, and downstream rivers. However, even though it can be measured or estimated locally with lysimeters or physically-based models, respectively, drainage is generally neglected or considered as a residual variable in crop water balance models. Furthermore, many studies have shown the relevance of using remote sensing data to spatialize crop water fluxes. The aim of this work is thus to estimate drainage from the plot-scale to the sub-basin-scale by using a crop water balance model coupled with remote sensing observations. For this, SAMIR, a crop water balance model based on the FAO-56 method using remote sensing data to constrain the modeled vegetation and the soil water status, is used. The approach is tested over the Algerri-Balaguer irrigation district in northeastern Spain where in-situ drainage measurements are available at an integrated (sub-basin) scale. Those data were obtained from a network of drains feeding four outlets where the drainage is continuously measured. Additionally, four lysimeters were installed on two experimental fields of the area. Firstly, the drainage simulated by SAMIR and by a physically-based model (HYDRUS-1D) are compared with the lysimeters measurements. Preliminary results indicate that both models are able to reproduce the drainage amount cumulated over the season given a site-specific calibration. Secondly, the field-scale SAMIR drainage estimates are aggregated over several sub-basins and compared against the drainage measurements at the outlet of the associated sub-basins. A strategy for calibrating SAMIR at the sub-basin-scale is proposed. The obtained results provide a first assessment of the potential of using a satellite-driven crop water balance to retrieve agricultural drainage at multiple spatial scales.

Abstract: Mediterranean piedmonts are an important hydro-agricultural systems. They constitute the junction between the mountains, where the streamflow is generated, and the surrounding plains, where the water is used. In Morocco, these traditional systems extend largely along the High Atlas Mountains. Yet, changing conditions in the Mediterranean basin as well as recurrent droughts in recent decades remain poorly understood in terms of hydrological and agricultural impacts, particularly in traditional hydro-agro-systems. The combined effects of climate variability and ineffective management of water resource dynamics may lead to increased water scarcity in these regions. The present work aims to assess the effects of climate variability and associated agricultural changes on water resources in a traditional irrigated piedmont of the Moroccan High Atlas. To that end, a trend analysis, together with change points detection, was carried out on annual and monthly precipitation, and streamflow from 1965 to 2018. Then, the standardized precipitation index (SPI) was employed to identify meteorological droughts. Also, groundwater, and spring discharge data were analyzed and discussed from 1973 to 2021. SPI outcomes revealed three major droughts, in 1981-1988, 1999-2008, and 2013-2018. Although the precipitation data showed no significant trend, except for Tahannaout station, the average annual precipitation over the piedmont area decreased by 28%. Similarly, streamflow decreased significantly by almost 40% for all stations, as did the Abainou spring's discharge. Consistent with that, groundwater level has declined dramatically over the past decades in the downstream piedmont. These decreases in water cycle components were tightly aligned with droughts. Yet, irrigation diversions were maintained in both dry and wet periods. Paradoxically, this decrease in water resources was associated with an agricultural transition from seasonal crops (cereals) to perennial crops (olive trees). This conversion is likely to amplify the water shortage, leading to groundwater resources overexploitation to satisfy the growing agricultural demand.

22. Yearly land cover mapping between 1984 and 2018 in the Haouz plain (Marrakech, Morocco) using robust decision trees approaches

Abstract: Land Cover is a major variable required for agricultural management and biophysical modelling. Remote sensing is the more efficient manner to map this information although robust method are still hardly available especially in semi-arid areas where the development of crops is very heterogeneous, where crops often have low vegetation coverage (e.g. tree plantations) and where several crops are sometimes associated on the same plot (e.g. trees with understory of annuals). Besides, the major problem of classical land cover classification approaches is that they require ground data every year for calibration.To solve both land cover complexity and ground data availability problems, we propose decision tree approaches based on phenological criteria assumed to remain true for any year. The present work was achieved in the Haouz plain (Marrakech, Morocco) where land cover belongs to six main classes, namely: bare soil, evergreen trees (olive and citrus), deciduous trees (apricot, apple, pomegranate…), winter crops (wheat), summer crops (melon and watermelons), fall crops (peas and broadbean). A decision tree is build based on phonological criteria supposed to be independent of the year, related either to the dynamic of NDVI (min, max and range of NDVI as compared to thresholds) and the period in which the peak or the minimum of NDVI happen (linked respectively to the max of vegetation of annual crops and to the leave fall for trees). This decision tree was applied to map the irrigated areas in the Haouz plain between 1984 and 2018 at yearly time scale using the Landsat archive downloaded from USGS. Only five years with not enough clear images were discarded. The time series obtained are consistent with the known changes that took place in the Haouz plain since 1984, namely a strong development of tree plantations, and of summer crops in some areas. The advantage of processing each year instead of only some key dates (e.g. 3 or 4 images as often encountered in studies when Landsat archive was not so easily available as now) is that it gives a better idea of uncertainties and provides a more robust trend. This work will be continued with estimates of the irrigation water consumption linked with these land cover changes.

Under these complicated conditions, the use of high spatio-temporal satellite time series data can improve classification results. In this context, Sentinel-2 for Agriculture (Sen2Agri) provides an open source processing system to exploit Sentinel-2 imagery in an operational way for crop monitoring. This research was conducted to explore and evaluate the potentiality of Sen2Agri system for crop type mapping in a highly fragmented and heterogeneous agricultural landscape in Haouz plain, Morocco. Based on the phenological information from field campaign, Sentinel-2 time series data for 2018 agricultural season, were processed to classify the main crop types dominated in the study area. After classification, accuracy assessment was undertaken based on generated crop map and resulted in Overall Accuracy (OA) of 85.6 and Kappa coefficients of 0.81.

Abstract: River flow and groundwater recharge in the Marrakech region are closely linked to the hydrological dynamics in the High Atlas Mountains. To anticipate the effects of climate change in this area where the pressure on water resources is increasing, it is essential to quantify the contribution of snowmelt and rainfall to runoff. This study aims to modeling the runoff of the Rheraya River in the Moroccan High Atlas (225 km(2), elevations ranging between 1030 and 4165 m.a.s.l.) taking into account its snow component. For this purpose, the GR4J conceptual and lumped model was applied over the period 1989-2009, coupling it with the CemaNeige module for semi-distributed snow dynamics. This work allows for an improved characterization of the hydrologic regime of this watershed. The daily snow coverage simulated by CemaNeige is in good agreement with that extracted from the MODIS snow product in the period 2000-2009 (R-2 = 0,64). In addition, the simulated daily snow water equivalent is consistent with that measured at a weather station (2004-2006, R-2 = 0,81). Finally, the runoff simulation reproduces quite well the strong seasonal and inter-annual variability. However, the low Nash value obtained as compared to standards (0,45), can be linked to the low quality of runoff measurements (unstable riverbed). In conclusion, the hydrological regime of the Rheraya River is pluvio-nival with an unimodal distribution whose maximum in April is linked with snowmelt. It is at this time of the year that downstream populations are most vulnerable to the flow deficit because irrigated crops come into their growth period.

We propose the MHYSAN model (Modèle de bilan HYdrique des Sols Agricoles Nus) for simulating soil water balance of bare soils. This model was used to simulate surface evaporation fluxes and SM content at daily time scale over a semi-arid, bare agricultural site in Tunisia (North Africa). Two main approaches are considered in this study. Firstly, the MHYSAN model was successfully calibrated for seven sites using continuous thetaprobe measurements at two depths. Then the possibility to extrapolate local SM simulations at distant sites, based on soil texture similarity only, was tested. This extrapolation was assessed using SAR estimates and manual thetaprobe measurements of SM recorded at these distant sites. The results reveal a bias of approximately 0.63% and 3.04%, and an RMSE equal to 6.11% and 4.5%, for the SAR volumetric SM and manual thetaprobe measurements, respectively. In a second approach, the MHYSAN model was calibrated using seven very high resolution SAR (TerraSAR-X) SM outputs ranging over only two months. The simulated SM were validated using continuous thetaprobe measurements during 15 months. Although the SM was measured on only seven different dates for the purposes of calibration, satisfactory results 30 were obtained as a result of the wide range of SM values recorded in these seven images. This led to good overall calibration of the soil parameters, thus demonstrating the considerable potential of Sentinel-1 images for daily soil moisture monitoring using simple models.

Abstract: The Mediterranean region is characterized by intense rainfall events giving rise to devastating floods. In Maghreb countries such as Morocco, there is a strong need for forecasting systems to reduce the impacts of floods. The development of such a system in the case of ungauged catchments is complicated, but remote-sensing products could overcome the lack of in situ measurements. The soil moisture content can strongly modulate the magnitude of flood events and consequently is a crucial parameter to take into account for flood modeling. In this study, different soil moisture products (European Space Agency Climate Change Initiative, ESA-CCI; Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity, SMOS; Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity by the Institut National de la Recherche Agronomique and Centre d'Etudes Spatiales de la Biosphère, SMOS-IC; Advanced Scatterometer, ASCAT; and ERA5 reanalysis) are compared to in situ measurements and one continuous soil-moisture-accounting (SMA) model for basins located in the High Atlas Mountains, upstream of the city of Marrakech. The results show that the SMOS-IC satellite product and the ERA5 reanalysis are best correlated with observed soil moisture and with the SMA model outputs. The different soil moisture datasets were also compared to estimate the initial soil moisture condition for an event-based hydrological model based on the Soil Conservation Service curve number (SCS-CN). The ASCAT, SMOS-IC, and ERA5 products performed equally well in validation to simulate floods, outperforming daily in situ soil moisture measurements that may not be representative of the whole catchment soil moisture conditions. The results also indicated that the daily time step may not fully represent the saturation state before a flood event due to the rapid decay of soil moisture after rainfall in these semiarid environments. Indeed, at the hourly time step, ERA5 and in situ measurements were found to better represent the initial soil moisture conditions of the SCS-CN model by comparison with the daily time step. The results of this work could be used to implement efficient flood modeling and forecasting systems in semiarid regions where soil moisture measurements are lacking.

Abstract: With the recent launch of Sentinel-2, the possibilities of image analysis increased especially in the field of land cover and crops mapping. The identification of different crop types is important particularly for agricultural field management and water resource monitoring. This paper aims to select a limited number of acquisition dates, from Sentinel-2 time series, to improve the accuracy of crop mapping method in the Haouz plain Marrakech, Morocco. First, the collected reference data was exploited to build the phenological shifts of the different crops present in the area of interest, namely: Apricot, Citrus, Olive, Cereals, watermelon and bare soil/fallow, using the derived NDVI layers. As a second step, the NDVI profiles were employed to distinguish different periods based on the spectral separability between the thematic classes. Then, crop classification independently for the 20acquired images, per period, was performed and evaluated in order to extract Overall Accuracy (OA) and kappa coefficient temporal evolution. The optimal acquisition dates per period were determined, relying on the calculated OA values, and classified based on the corresponding NDVI time series. By minimizing the number of optimal acquisition dates, different combinations were tested and analysed (3 dates per period, 2 dates per period, 1 date per period). The classification results, proved that the proposed approach found out that three acquisition dates, well distributed through the agricultural season achieve the best differentiation between five crops and bare soil with an OA of 85%.

Abstract: International audience; La COP 22 (Marrakech, 2016) a fourni aux scientifiques l'occasion de s'interroger sur les conditions d'un dialogue interdisciplinaire autour du changement climatique, notamment à travers le séminaire « Ressources en eau, sociétés et territoires méditerranéens. L'interdisciplinarité pour répondre aux défis du changement climatique », organisé par des équipes de recherche franco-marocaines. La réflexion associant chercheurs, gestionnaires et décideurs s'est déroulée à travers six ateliers centrés sur l'eau comme enjeu environnemental et social : irrigation, territoires de l'eau, gestion intégrée, risques, réutilisation des eaux usées, biens communs. Chacun de ces objets suscite des approches disciplinaires potentiellement complémentaires. Les différents ateliers ont ainsi permis de poser la question du dialogue interdisciplinaire et de réfléchir collectivement aux modalités d'articulation des contributions de chaque discipline. Interdisciplinary dialogue as a response to climate change challenges. The 22 th Conference of the Parties on Climate Change (COP 22, Marrakech 2016) offered scientists the opportunity to examine the conditions for interdisciplinary dialogue about climate change, in particular through the seminar titled "Water resources, societies and Mediterranean territories: how interdisciplinary dialogue can contribute to climate change issues", organized by international French-Moroccan research teams. To trigger the discussions associating researchers, managers and decision makers, six workshops were proposed addressing water related topics involving both physical and social component: i.e., irrigation, water territories, integrated water management, risks, water reuse and common goods. Each one of these targets involves potentially complementary disciplinary approaches. The various workshops thus made it possible to address the question of interdisciplinary dialogue and to think collectively about the ways to articulate the contributions of each discipline.

Abstract: A precise estimate of the evapotranspiration (ET) partitioning is fundamental for determining the crop water needs and optimizing irrigation management. The plant transpiration (T) is generally considered to be the most desirable component, while reducing the soil evaporation (E) could be one of the most important water-saving actions in semi-arid agricultural regions. Given the lack of reference method to estimate the E/T partitioning of wheat crop, this study inter-compares four different methods based on eddy covariance, sap flow and lysimetry measurements and FAO modeling. The objectives are: i) to quantify the systematic and random uncertainty in E and T observations, ii) to evaluate the partitioning ratio (T/ET) at the daily/field scale and iii) to assess the performance of the FAO model over two drip irrigated wheat fields. Results indicate that despite the small surface sensed by mini-lysimeters, the partitioning ratio is evaluated more precisely (19% relative error) with lysimetry than with the other systems (any combination of eddy covariance, lysimetry and sap flow measurements). Moreover, stem-scale T measurements from sap flow sensors are subject to representativeness issues at the field scale, and to systematic errors during water-stress and senescence periods. The lysimeter-derived partitioning ratio increases from about 0.50 to 0.85 during the growth stage and rapidly drops towards 0 during senescence. Its dynamics is found to be significantly correlated (R>0.7) with the 5-cm soil moisture. By comparing FAO simulations with observations, it is found that the FAO method overestimates T and underestimates E, while keeping satisfying ET estimates for drip irrigated wheat. This study suggests that different independent measurement techniques should be implemented to both quantify and reduce uncertainties in the T/ET ratio, and that accurate observations are still needed to improve the modeling of E/T components.

Abstract: International audience; The convergence of new EO data flows, new methodological developments and cloud computing infrastructure calls for a paradigm shift in operational agriculture monitoring. The Copernicus Sentinel-2 mission providing a systematic 5-day revisit cycle and free data access opens a completely new avenue for near real-time crop specific monitoring at parcel level over large countries. This research investigated the feasibility to propose methods and to develop an open source system able to generate, at national scale, cloud-free composites, dynamic cropland masks, crop type maps and vegetation status indicators suitable for most cropping systems. The so-called Sen2-Agri system automatically ingests and processes Sentinel-2 and Landsat 8 time series in a seamless way to derive these four products, thanks to streamlined processes based on machine learning algorithms and quality controlled in situ data. It embeds a set of key principles proposed to address the new challenges arising from countrywide 10 m resolution agriculture monitoring. The full-scale demonstration of this system for three entire countries (Ukraine, Mali, South Africa) and five local sites distributed across the world was a major challenge met successfully despite the availability of only one Sentinel-2 satellite in orbit. In situ data were collected for calibration and validation in a timely manner allowing the production of the four Sen2-Agri products over all the demonstration sites. The independent validation of the monthly cropland masks provided for most sites overall accuracy values higher than 90%, and already higher than 80% as early as the mid-season. The crop type maps depicting the 5 main crops for the considered study sites were also successfully validated: overall accuracy values higher than 80% and F1 Scores of the different crop type classes were most often higher than 0.65. These respective results pave the way for countrywide crop specific monitoring system at parcel level bridging the gap between parcel visits and national scale assessment. These full-scale demonstration results clearly highlight the operational agriculture monitoring capacity of the Sen2-Agri system to exploit in near real-time the observation acquired by the Sentinel-2 mission over very large areas. Scaling this open source system on cloud computing infrastructure becomes instrumental to support market transparency while building national monitoring capacity as requested by the AMIS and GEOGLAM G-20 initiatives.

35. Assessment of actual evapotranspiration over a semi-arid heterogeneous land surface by means of coupled low resolution remote sensing data with energy balance model: comparison to extra Large Aperture Scintillometer measurements

Abstract: In semi-arid areas, agricultural production is restricted by water availability; hence efficient agricultural water management is a major issue. The design of tools providing regional estimates of evapotranspiration (ET), one of the most relevant water balance fluxes, may help the sustainable management of water resources. Remote sensing provides periodic data about actual vegetation temporal dynamics (through the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index NDVI) and water availability under water stress (through the land surface temperature LST) which are crucial factors controlling ET. In this study, spatially distributed estimates of ET (or its energy equivalent, the latent heat fluxes LE) in the Kairouan plain (Central Tunisia) were computed by applying the Soil Plant Atmosphere and Remote Sensing Evapotraspiration (SPARSE) model fed by low resolution remote sensing data (Terra and Aqua MODIS). The work goal was to assess the operational use of the SPARSE model and the accuracy of the modelled i) sensible heat flux (H) and ii) daily ET over a heterogeneous semi-arid landscape with a complex land cover (i.e. trees, winter cereals, summer vegetables). The SPARSE's layer approach was run to compute instantaneous estimates of H and LE fluxes at the satellite overpass time. The good correspondence (R2 = 0.60 and 0.63 and RMSE = 57.89 W/m-2 and 53.85 W/m-2; for Terra and Aqua, respectively) between instantaneous H estimates and large aperture scintillometer (XLAS)'s H measurements along a pathlength of 4 km over the study area showed that the SPARSE model presents satisfactory accuracy. Results showed that, despite the fairly large scatter, the instantaneous LE can be suitably estimated at large scale (RMSE = 47.20 W/m-2 and 43.20 W/m-2; for Terra and Aqua, respectively and R2 = 0.55 for both satellites). Additionally, water stress was investigated by comparing modelled (SPARSE derived) to observed (XLAS derived) water stress values; we found that most points were located within a 0.2 conﬁdence interval, thus the general tendencies are well reproduced. Even though extrapolation of instantaneous latent heat flux values to daily totals was less obvious, daily ET estimates are deemed acceptable.

Abstract: The soil evaporation is under atmospheric conditions non-limited in energy-strongly linked to the near-surface soil moisture sensed by microwave radiometers. This has been the rationale for developing the DisPATCh (Disaggregation based on Physical And Theoretical scale Change) method, which relies on thermal-derived evaporation to improve the spatial resolution of SMOS (Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity) like data. In practice, the disaggregation scheme estimates the 0–5 cm soil moisture at 1 km resolution by combining 40 km SMOS soil moisture, 1 km resolution MODIS (MODerate resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) data, and a multi-scale soil evaporation model. This paper provides an overview of 1) the current status and main assumptions of DisPATCh, 2) the DisPATCh-based processor implemented in the Centre Aval de Traitement des Donnees SMOS (CATDS), and 3) related ongoing research including advanced modeling of soil evaporation and the prospect of coupling thermal- and radar-based soil moisture downscaling approaches.

Abstract: International audience; The irrigation performance criteria of equity and adequacy are of primary concern for irrigation managers. The input data required at various scales to assess irrigation performance, often not available, need costly intensive field campaigns. Remote sensing techniques, used to directly estimate crop evapotranspiration (ETc), became recently an attractive option to assess irrigation performance from individual fields to irrigation scheme or river basin scale. In this study, ETc maps were obtained by combining the FAO-56 dual approach with relationships between crop biophysical variables and NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index), using high spatial resolution time series of SPOT and Landsat images. This approach was applied for 2002/2003 growing season in Haouz plain, Morocco. Remote sensing-based indicators, reflecting equity and adequacy of the irrigation water delivery were estimated. Adequacy was determined according to Relative Irrigation supply (RIS), Depleted Fraction (DF) and Relative Evapotranspiration (RET) and equity according to the coefficient of variation of ETc. The analysis of these indicators exhibits a great variability among fields. Variability in irrigation performance at all levels, associated factors and possible improvements are discussed. This study demonstrates how remote sensing-based estimates of water consumption provide better estimates of irrigation performance at different scales than the traditional field survey methods.

Abstract: This paper presents an overview of a decade (2002-2012) of studies performed on Soil-Plant-Atmosphere processes, in semi-arid areas (Haouz plain, Morocco). In this period, fifteen in-situ experiments on the dominant irrigated crops were performed, controlling the fluxes exchanged between land surface and atmosphere. The results showed that the physically based SVATs (ICARE, SiSPAT and ISBA) provided the best estimates of surface fluxes. For operational purposes, the FAO-56 approach and SAMIR Software (Satellite Monitoring for Irrigation) give a good estimate of evapotranspiration at field and regional scales, respectively. Finally, thermal infrared data were used in conjunction with SVATs to investigate the possibility of estimating the quantity of irrigation water.

Abstract: L’agriculture irriguée est une des composantes essentielles du développement économique du Haouz avec le tourisme et l’artisanat. Elle représente plus de 85 % de la consommation en eau du bassin versant du Tensift. L’aridité climatique qui règne dans la région, ainsi que les périodes de sécheresse récurrentes depuis une dizaine d’années, induisent une mobilisation de plus en plus importante des eaux souterraines et de surface, avec un recours croissant à l’irrigation.L’objectif principal de cette étude est la détermination des volumes d’eau pompés à partir de la nappe phréatique, dont l’essentiel est destiné à l’irrigation. Pour ce faire, nous avons établi une carte d’occupation du sol par classification de trois images Landsat TM acquises à trois dates différentes. Cette carte nous a permis de localiser les différentes cultures irriguées et d’estimer les consommations totales à partir des besoins en eau standard des cultures (méthode FAO). En comparant ces chiffres avec les volumes d’eau de surface attribués par l’organisme en charge de la gestion de l’irrigation à partir d’eau de surface au niveau de la plaine (ORMVAH - Office Régionale de Mise en Valeur Agricole du Haouz), nous avons pu estimer le volume d’eau moyen pompé pour l’irrigation à 481 Mm3, valeur comprise dans l’intervalle (271; 691) Mm3•an‑1 associé aux incertitudes sur l’estimation des consommations des cultures. Par ailleurs, l’interpolation graphique entre les débits réels estimés lors de l’enquête de terrain 1986 et 1971 et les autorisations de débits attribués par l’agence de bassin au niveau de la zone fournit une estimation des pompages effectifs d’environ 495 Mm3•an‑1., Irrigated agriculture is one of the main components of the economic development of the Haouz Plain, along with tourism and craft industry. It represents more than 85% of water consumption in the Tensift catchment. The dry climate, as well the as recurrent periods of drought during the past ten years, have led to an increase in the use of surface and ground waters, used mainly for irrigation. The main objective of this study was to determine the volume of groundwater pumped for irrigation. We created a land use map through the supervised classification of three Landsat images obtained on three different dates. This map enabled us to locate the various irrigated crops and to calculate their total water needs from the consumption values for each crop, using the FAO method. By comparing the volumes of surface water allocated by ORMVAH (Office Régionale de Mise en Valeur Agricole du Haouz) with the crop requirements, we could estimate the average volume of water pumped for irrigation to be 481 Mm3•yr‑1. The values ranged between 271 and 691 Mm3•yr‑1 due to uncertainties in the estimation of crop water consumption. In addition, the graphic interpolation between the actual volume of water extracted, as determined by field investigations in 1986 and 1971, and the pumping flow allowed by the local water authority in the Haouz Plain, gave an estimated value of approximately 495 Mm3•yr‑1.

Abstract: The aim of this paper was to demonstrate the potential of multi-temporal X-band Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) moisture products to be used for the calibration of a model reproducing soil moisture (SM) variations. We propose the MHYSAN model (Modele de bilan HYdrique des Sols Agricoles Nus) for simulating soil water balance of bare soils. This model was used to simulate surface evaporation fluxes and soil moisture content (SMC) at daily time scale over a semi-arid, bare agricultural site in Tunisia (North Africa). The MHYSAN model was calibrated using seven very high-resolution SAR (TerraSAR-X) SM outputs ranging over only two months. Then, the simulated SM was validated using continuous thetaprobe measurements during 15 months. The high performances observed could be explained by the fact that although images were acquired during a short time range, the important soil moisture variation captured allowed a good calibration of the soil parameters. These results highlight the potential of Sentinel-1 images for daily soil moisture monitoring using simple models.

Abstract: Agriculture brings with it a number of issues: agricultural production and food security, water and soil resource conservation, limiting the impact of farming on the quality of our environment (water, air, soil). In the context of global changes and the challenges they pose for agriculture sustainability, our ability to characterize how croplands function in terms of water, carbon and particle fluxes is crucial. Developments of agro-ecosystems modeling, including their interactions with the atmosphere and the anthropogenic factors are valuable tools for progress in this direction. Remote sensing, with the high variety of spectral ranges and the fine spatial and temporal resolution currently available, is a tool of great value for various applications in agriculture. The availability of robust inverse methods that allow surface biophysical variables to be assessed, combined with modeling approaches, makes it a high performance tool. The major contributions of remote sensing include: – its ability to cover large stretches of land and to provide information on the various land uses and practices generated by agriculture. These uses and practices are important to know, both for census purposes (agricultural statistics, agri-environmental monitoring, etc.) and for modeling the behavior of agro-hydrosystems; – providing frequent variables characterizing soil and vegetation properties that allows us to monitor the status of crops, their production potential, their irrigation requirements. This monitoring is a highly strategic issue, both for forecasting purposes, food security and good resource management; – the possibility, from the same information, of assessing the contribution of agricultural lands to net emissions of CO2 and other greenhouse gases (GHGs); this assessment is essential for proposing alternative agricultural scenarios for mitigating the contribution of croplands to climate change; – thanks to the fine spatial and temporal resolution of information, the possibility of providing a decision support for farming activities according to the intra-field variability (precision farming). This dimension represents an important lever for enabling agricultural systems to achieve better efficiency and economical use of inputs for an agriculture that respects the environment.

Abstract: The increasing availability of high resolution high repetitively VIS-NIR remote sensing, like the forthcoming Sentinel-2 mission to be launched in 2015, offers unprecedented opportunity to improve agricultural monitoring. In this study, regional evapotranspiration and crop water consumption were estimated over an irrigated area located in the Kairouan plain (central Tunisia) using the FAO-56 dual crop coefficient water balance model combined with NDVI image time series providing estimates of the actual basal crop coefficient (Kcb) and vegetation fraction cover. Three time series of high-resolution SPOT5 images have been acquired for the 2008-2009, 2011-2012 and 2012-2013 hydrological years. We also benefited from a SPOT4 time series acquired in the frame of the SPOT4-Take5 experiment. The SPOT5 images were radiometrically corrected, first, using the SMAC6s Algorithm, and then improved using invariant objects located on the scene. The method was first calibrated using ground measurements of evapotranspiration achieved using eddy-correlation devices installed on irrigated wheat and barley plots. For other crops for which no calibration data was available, parameters were taken from bibliography. Then, the model was run to spatialize irrigation over the whole area and a validation was done using cumulated seasonal water volumes obtained from ground survey for three irrigated perimeters. In a subsequent step, evapotranspiration estimates were obtained using a large aperture scintillometer and were used for an additional validation of the model outputs. © (2015) COPYRIGHT Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers (SPIE). Abstract: Monitoring of water resources and a better understanding of the eco-hydrological processes governing their dynamics are necessary to anticipate and develop measures to adapt to climate and water-use changes. Focusing on this aim, a research project carried out within the framework of French-Moroccan cooperation demonstrated how remote sensing can help improve the monitoring and modelling of water resources in semi-arid Mediterranean regions. The study area is the Tensift Basin located near Marrakech (Morocco) - a typical Southern Mediterranean catchment with water production in the mountains and downstream consumption mainly driven by agriculture. Following a description of the institutional context and the experimental network, the main recent research results are presented: (1) methodological development for the retrieval of key components of the water cycle in a snow-covered area from remote-sensing imagery (disaggregated soil moisture from soil moisture and ocean salinity) at the kilometre scale, based on the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS); (2) the use of remote-sensing products together with land-surface modelling for the monitoring of evapotranspiration; and (3) phenomenological modelling based only on time series of remote-sensing data with application to forecasting of cereal yields. Finally, the issue of transfer of research results is also addressed through two remote sensing-based tools developed together with the project partners involved in water management and irrigation planning.

Abstract: The objective of this study was to simulate the evolution of soil erosion in a semi-arid mountainous watershed (225 km(2), High Atlas Mountains, Morocco) under different scenarios of climate and land use change to the end of 21st century. Erosion plots monitored over four years showed spatially contrasted results. Most of the soils produced from 0.015 to 2.5 t ha(-1) y(-1), whereas badlands produced 350 t ha(-1) y(-1). The average sediment yield measured at the outlet during the same period was approximately 4 t ha(-1) y(-1). The STREAM distributed erosion model was parameterized using these field measurements (infiltration rates and runoff sediment concentrations). The results showed an overall agreement between the modelled and measured annual cumulative sediment yields. Simulations of the ARPEGE meteorological model were used for the 1960-1990 and 2070-2100 periods. The changes between these two periods were downscaled using three different methods, decreasing annual precipitations by 10-14%, although with more rainfall in summer and fall. Climate change alone increased sediment yield by 4.7-10.1%. However, simulations showed that land use changes might potentially induce much larger changes in erosion (up to 250%), approximately proportional to the evolution of the extension of badlands.

In this objective, the linear unmixing method is adapted to process a 6-year archive of Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) 16-day composite data at 250 m spatial resolution. The result of the processing is a description of land use in terms of fractions of three predominant classes: orchard, non-cultivated area and annual crop. The typical signatures of land classes - endmembers - are retrieved on a yearly basis using an automated algorithm that detects the most pure pixels in the study area. The algorithm first extracts typical NDVI profiles as potential endmembers, then selects the profiles that have the best ability to reproduce the variability of MODIS NDVI time series over the study area. The endmembers appear stable over the 6 years of study and coherent with the vegetation seasonality of the three targeted land classes. Validation data allow us to quantify the error on land-use fractions to about 0.10 at 1 km resolution. Land-use estimates are consistent in space and time: the orchard class is stable, and differences in water availability (irrigation and rainfall) partly explain a part of the inter-annual variations observed for the annual crop class. The advantages and drawbacks of the approach are discussed.

Abstract: International audience; In irrigation schemes under rotational water supply in semi-arid region, the water allocation and irrigation scheduling are often based on a fixed-area proportionate water depth with every irrigation cycle irrespective of crops and their growth stages, for an equitable water supply. An experiment was conducted during the 2004- 2005 season in Haouz irrigated area in Morocco, which objective was 1) to evaluate the effects of the surface irrigation scheduling method (ex-isting rule) adopted by the irrigation agency on winter wheat production compared to a full ir-rigation method and 2) to evaluate drip irrigation versus surface irrigation impacts on water sav-ing and yield of winter wheat. The methodology was based on the FAO-56 dual approach for the surface irrigation scheduling. Ground measure- ments of the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) were used to derive the basal crop coefficient and the vegetation fraction cover. The simple FAO-56 approach was used for drip irrigation scheduling. For surface irrigation, the existing rule approach resulted in yield and WUE reductions of 22% and 15%, respectively, compared with the optimized irrigation sched-uling proposed by the FAO-56 for full irrigation treatment. This revealed the negative effects of the irrigation schedules adopted in irrigation schemes under rotational water supply on crops productivity. It was also demonstrated that drip irrigation applied to wheat was more efficient with 20% of water saving in comparison with surface irrigation (full irrigation treatment). Drip irrigation gives also higher wheat yield com-pared to surface irrigation (+28% and +52% for full irrigation and existing rule treatments re-spectively). The same improvement was ob-served for water use efficiency (+24% and +59% respectively).

Abstract: In this study, the performance of three empirical methods for estimating reference evapotranspiration (ET0): Makkink (Mak) and Priestley-Taylor (PT) (radiation-based) and Hargreaves-Samani (HARG) (temperature-based) were assessed in semi-and regions. The values of ET0 derived using these three methods were compared to those estimated using the reference FAO Penman-Monteith (FAO-PM) method under semi-arid conditions of the Tensift basin (central of Morocco) and the Yaqui Valley (Northwest Mexico). The results showed that the HARG method is the best one to estimate ET0 over both semi-and test sites. Conversely, the performance of the other two empirical methods was poor except under humid conditions. However when the parameters alpha and C-m figurate in the PT and Mak equations are locally calibrated, the performance of these two methods greatly improved. Additionally, this study showed that, when measurements of meteorological parameters needed for estimating ET0 (which are not always available especially in developing countries) are lacking, the climatic data generated with numerical weather prediction models provide an alternative and effective solution to estimate ET0. In this regard, data generated using a weather forecast model (ALADIN) over the Tensift basin showed that the HARG model is the most accurate one for estimating the spatio-temporal variability of ET0.

Abstract: On the south shore of the western Mediterranean Basin, mountain forest ecosystems are degraded, mainly due to their overexploitation. Topographic, edaphic and climatic conditions create stressful growing conditions and sensitive ecosystems. Nonetheless, in these ecosystems, forests remain an important resource for the subsistence of local populations. Historically the vulnerability of this resource has prompted mankind to establish traditional control forms of forest and pastoral areas. These common resource management systems are still functioning in the Moroccan High Atlas Mountains under the name of agdal which refers to the territory, the resources and access rules laid down by the local population in order to manage the territory. The estimation of land cover changes was a suitable method to evaluate the effectiveness of these community-based systems for forest conservation. In this paper we highlight the impact of this traditional management on woodland dynamics in a mountainous area (Nit Bouguemez Valley) through the use of remote sensing approaches, associated with forest structure characterisation and the analysis of social mechanisms. A diachronic analysis based on the comparison of aerial photographs (dated 1964) with a recent Spot 5 satellite image (from 2002, 2.5 m resolution) was performed. Estimation of changes in canopy cover percentage was achieved using a graphic chart as a base for the photo-interpretation, and a subsequent validation by field sampling. A map of canopy cover changes between 1964 and 2002 was produced. Ecological measurements of trees were also achieved on field plots. The results indicate that in the past 38 years, forest ecosystems have been affected by a relative decrease of 20.7% of the total forest area, and 8.7% for the mean canopy cover percentage. However, strong disparities in forest dynamics arose according to the agdal or non-agdal status of the forest. Significant progression in canopy cover is noted in controlled agdal areas but large degradation has occurred outside. Regarding the stand ecological conditions, we observed significant differences in the stand structure, according to the management mode. We suggest through this study increased recognition of customary forest regulations, which may be adapted and extrapolated to other communities. However, from an ecological point of view, the agdal system alone is not sufficient to reach a viable management mode in the long term.
