Ibeno and Onna are two coastal communities in Niger delta, Nigeria that are vulnerable to the effects of climate change. These communities face the risk of exposure due to water level rise, change in weather conditions and extreme weather events. The main means of livelihood in these communities is fishing which has been greatly impacted by climate change coupled with pollution that is endemic in Niger Delta. The perceived changes in weather conditions observed by the fishers in the two communities include changes in water depth, frequency and intensity of temperature and fluctuation in timing of rainfall. These perceived changes have contributed to increase in fishing efforts, fishing time, decrease in fish catch amongst others which in turn have affected their fishing livelihood. Thus there is a need to build up the resilience which starts from knowing their present coping strategies and proffering better coping strategies that will enhance resilience for the fishers.&nbsp

The effects of extracts from the fruits of Sponge plant (Luffa cylindrica) on the proximate composition of juveniles of Clarias gariepienus was investigated under laboratory conditions using static renewal bioassay for 56 days. The fish with average length and weight of 13.12±1.01cm and 14.72±3.63g respectively were exposed to sub-lethal concentrations of 883mg/L, 1766mg/L, 3532mg/L and 7063mg/L of extracts from the fruit of L. cylindrica. The physicochemical parameters of water contaminated with sub-lethal concentrations of Luffa cylindrica were examined. The pH of the test media was slightly acidic, which tend to increase as concentration of Luffa cylindrica extract increases. Some physico-chemical properties and the concentrations of the metals Fe, Mn, Ni, Cd, Cr, Co, Cu, Pb, and Zn in water and sediments were examined from September 2011 to January 2012 in Bodo Creek, where oil spills have been recurrent. Temperature, pH, total dissolved solid, conductivity, salinity, dissolved oxygen, biological oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD), total hardness, sulfate, nitrate, and phosphate were determined in surface water. Particle size, total organic matter (TOM), and pH were also determined in the sediments. The parameters were within permissible limits except the mean values of BOD, COD, total hardness, and sulfate that exceeded levels permissible for domestic use. The sediments consisted mainly of sand, with TOM ranging from 0.2% to 5.5%. With the exception of cadmium that was below detection limit, metal levels (mg kg¡1) in the sediments were 12 (Mn), 1070 (Fe), 10 (Cu), 10 (Zn), 5.3 (Cr), 1.1 (Pb), 1.0 (Ni), and 0.5 (Co) while in water they were 24, 98, 21, 6.9, 4.0, 0.6, 0.18, and 0.16, respectively. The latter were higher than World Health Organization recommended permissible levels for both surface and drinking water.
