We present the results of the broad scientific investigation campaign of an important Celestial globe by Vincenzo Coronelli, part of the Marciana National Library collection (Venice). Coronelli was one of the finest globe-makers and cartographers of the 17th century and he manufactured a large number of Terrestrial and Celestial globes of different sizes, such as the two impressive and entirely manuscript 4-meter globes commissioned for Louis XIV. Using multiple techniques, we studied the materials and the construction techniques of the first printed reproduction of the French Celestial globe, donated to the Serenissima Republic in 1689 and still in Venice. We present and discuss the results of the multispectral imaging analysis, of the chemical investigations X-ray Fluorescence (XRF), Scanning electron microscopy - Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectrometry (SEM-EDS) and Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and of the stratigraphic analysis by polarised-light microscopy. Moreover, we explain in detail the results of the X-ray tomographic analysis performed in situ. Thanks to this comprehensive campaign, we examined the production process of this unique globe, from the pigment to the woodworking approach of the Master globe-maker Coronelli.

At the end of the 17th century, different editions of the terrestrial and celestial globes by the geographer and cosmographer Vincenzo Coronelli (1650-1718) were circulating all around Europe. After the production of two large globes (384 cm in diameter) for Louis XIV (1681-1683), Coronelli’s pair of terrestrial and celestial globes had acquired enough prestige to hit the market as geographical and astronomical instruments, but also as grand decorative and collectible objects.

Dosadašnje spoznaje o tvrđavi sv. Mihovila u Šibeniku relativno su skromne, a objavljena građa uglavnom je nesistematizirana tako da danas nije moguće u postupnosti definirati različite graditeljske faze. Sukladno tome i promjene koje je tvrđava doživjela kao odgovor na upotrebu vatrenog oružja, posebice topništva treba dodatno istražiti. Uvidom u kod nas dosad gotovo nepoznatu grafičku mapu Vincenza Coronellija iz biblioteke Marciana u Veneciji, pružila nam se mogućnost rasvijetliti fazu adaptacije tvrđave koju povezujemo s periodom Kandijskog rata (1645. – 1669.). U tom razdoblju grozničavog utvrđivanja Šibenika i Splita pred opasnom turskom najezdom, prepoznajemo dio istog obrambenog programa u kojem istaknutu ulogu imaju kondotijeri u mletačkoj službi Christoph Martin von Degenfeld i Camillo Gonzaga.

The aim of this paper is to analyze the representation of forts and strongholds on the north-eastern Adriatic coast and hinterland (present day Croatia) in Vincenzo Coronelli's isolario MARI, GOLFI, ISOLE, SPIAGGIE, PORTI, CITTA, Fortezze, Ed Altri Luoghi Dell' Istria, Quarner, DALMAZIA ALBANIA EPIRO, E LIVADIA, Delineati, e Descritti Dal P(ADRE) GENERALE CORONELLI. This particular isolario was published in 1688 as the third part of Coronelli's atlas Atlante della Repubblica di Venezia. The basic methodology used includes the interpretation of socio-geographic elements from Coronelli’s original maps included in the isolario, housed in the State Archives in Zadar. Coronelli’s maps were also compared with other cartographic depictions of north-eastern Adriatic forts. During the period of the Venetian administration of eastern Adriatic (15-18th centuries) the Senate of the Republic considered the area to be of great geostrategic importance, especially during the late 17th and early 18th centuries, when several wars were waged against the Ottoman Empire, one of Venice’s major rivals. The Republic's acquisition of new territories after those wars required them to be appropriately cartographically depicted. This was a task for Vincenzo Coronelli, the official cartographer of the Venetian Republic. Coronelli's work was not only based on older available maps, but also on field research and first-hand information obtained from soldiers and seamen who had been stationed throughout the eastern Adriatic. Therefore, Mari, golfi, isole spiaggie, porti, citta... introduced a multitude of geographical, military, historical and other information about Adriatic towns and forts. Key ports, naval strongholds and hinterland forts such as Pula (Pola), Zadar (Zara), Knin (Chnin), Šibenik (Sebenico), Klis (Clissa), Split (Spalato), Hvar (Liesina), Korčula (Curzola) were depicted several times on maps and panoramas. Zadar and Split were given the greatest attention, since Zadar was the centre of Venetian Dalmatia and Split was an important strategic and commercial location on the route towards the Ottoman Empire.

Il contributo riporta i risultati analitici ottenuti sul globo di Vincenzo Coronelli finalizzati alla caratterizzione dei materiali originali utilizzati, nonchè quelli riscontarti come vecchi interventi di restauro. Le indagini sono state svolte con sistemi analitici non invasivi quali lo scanner multispettrale d'immagini nei range di lunghezza d'onda che vanno dal visibile, UV ed Infrarosso e micro nvasivi quali la microscopia ottica ed FTIR effettuata sia su sezioni stratigrafiche della superficie dipinta in modalità riflessione totale attenuata (ATR), che su micro particelle di campione analizzate con il sistema della micro cella di diamante in modalità trasmissione.
