Abstract

Many calcium-binding proteins are expressed in a region-and cell-type specific manner in the mammalian hippocampus. Neuronal calcium-binding proteins (NECABs) are also expressed in hippocampal neurons, but few species have been investigated, with partly controversial findings. We here describe NECAB1, NECAB2 and NECAB3 as well as parvalbumin, calbindin, and calretinin in the European mole, and compare staining patterns of these proteins with those in mouse and other species. While subtle differences are present, NECAB staining in the European mole was generally similar to those in mouse. Common to European moles, mice, and other species we investigated, large hilar polymorphic cells, likely to represent mossy cells, were positive for all three NECABs. NECAB1 and 2 are suitable as markers for these cells along the entire septotemporal axis of the hippocampus. In the European mole, parvalbumin, calbindin and calretinin showed traits that have been described in other species before, albeit in a unique combination. In summary, we provide the first description of distribution of these proteins in the hippocampus of the European mole. This subterranean, insectivorous, and solitary living species belongs to the Order of Eulipotyphla. Despite many similarities with other subterranean species from the rodent order in terms of lifestyle, its hippocampus is cytoarchitecturally much more elaborated than in, e.g., mole-rats. It remains an open question if the hippocampal structure of the European mole reflects evolutionary constraints or ecology. Our descriptive study highlights the diversity in hippocampal cytoarchitecture even in small mammalian species.

Abstract

Species identification of the two sympatric Central EuropeanWater Shrews Neomys fodiens and N. milleri based on external features is tricky due to a relatively high variability of the traditionally used features (e.g., hair fringe on the hind feet and the tail), which in addition are often not readily visible on camera trap footage. For the Italian populations of these two species, it has relatively recently been suggested that the shape of the facial line of demarcation (line between the dark fur on the dorsal side and the lighter fur on the ventral side) can be used as an additional feature for species identification. In the current study, we evaluated this feature also in populations North of the Alps, focusing on Switzerland and -- on a smaller scale -- other parts of Europe. The examined, in part genetically identified specimens confirm that the facial line of demarcation shows a characteristic and mostly well discernible dichotomy between N. fodiens and N. milleri: in most of the examined N. milleri the dark facial mask involves the corners of the mouth and/or other parts of the mouth. In N. fodiens, however, there is usually an evenly spaced and relatively broad line of light fur between the mouth and the line of demarcation. This study corroborates that the shape of the facial line of demarcation is a helpful tool for the identification of these two Neomys-species and that this feature can be particularly relevant for studies using non-invasive monitoring methods such as camera traps. 10. Cell numbers in the reflected blade of CA3 and their relation to other hippocampal principal cell populations across seven species

Abstract

The hippocampus of many mammals contains a histoarchitectural region that is not present in laboratory mice and rats-the reflected blade of the CA3 pyramidal cell layer. Pyramidal cells of the reflected blade do not extend dendrites into the hippocampal molecular layer, and recent evidence indicates that they, like the proximal CA3 pyramids in laboratory rats and mice, partially integrate functionally with the dentate circuitry in pattern separation. Quantitative assessments of phylogenetic or disease-related changes in the hippocampal structure and function treat the reflected blade heterogeneously. Depending on the ease with which it can be differentiated, it is either assigned to the dentate hilus or to the remainder of CA3. Here, we investigate the impact that the differential assignment of reflected blade neurons may have on the outcomes of quantitative comparisons. We find it to be massive. If reflected blade neurons are treated as a separate entity or pooled with dentate hilar cells, the quantitative makeup of hippocampal cell populations can differentiate between species in a taxonomically sensible way. Assigning reflected blade neurons to CA3 greatly diminishes the differentiating power of all hippocampal principal cell populations, which may point towards a quantitative hippocampal archetype. A heterogeneous assignment results in a differentiation pattern with little taxonomic semblance. The outcomes point towards the reflected blade as either a major potential player in hippocampal functional and structural differentiation or a region that may have cloaked that hippocampi are more similarly organized across species than generally believed.

Abstract

Dans cet ouvrage, les principaux philosophes et historiens de la philosophie des États-Unis, spécialistes de Spinoza, présentent leurs interprétations et dialoguent avec leurs homologues français. C’est la première fois qu’une discussion systématique entre ces deux traditions a lieu. Elle fait suite au dialogue engagé entre Italiens et Français dans le volume Spinoza transalpin (Éditions de la Sorbonne, 2014). Si la philosophie ignore les nationalismes, elle n’ignore pas les langues. Ainsi se créent dans chaque pays des traditions d’interprétation : elles partagent des références communes, lisent les auteurs selon des problématiques liées à leur histoire et s’expriment dans des styles spécifiques, propres à leur formation et à leurs institutions. Loin de gêner le débat, ces différences rendent au contraire nécessaires les confrontations. Cette rencontre révèle que les philosophes américains prennent en compte les analyses de Gueroult, Matheron, Althusser ou Deleuze pour les prolonger, les contester ou les mesurer à leurs propres recherches. Elle témoigne surtout d’une évolution du commentaire. Il fut un temps où la lecture américaine se concentrait sur la logique et la métaphysique, alors que les questions d’éthique et de politique ainsi que les discussions sur la religion semblaient un domaine réservé à la recherche française. Il apparaît maintenant que ces frontières se dissolvent et que durant ces dernières années, les thématiques de la communauté, de la superstition, de l’objectivité du bien et du mal, de la générosité se développent outre-Atlantique dans de nouvelles perspectives.

14. Shortcomings of DNA barcodes: a perspective from the mammal fauna of Switzerland.

Abstract

The use of DNA barcodes is a popular approach to identify unknown environmental samples based on reference DNA databases. However, as shown previously, the success of reaching accurate species-level identification will not only depend on the taxonomic group under interest, but also on the availability of reliable and comprehensive reference databases. We applied this methodology for a sampling of vouchered specimens of wild mammals of Switzerland and demonstrated that reliable species identification with standard DNA barcodes in this reputedly well-known taxon may be challenging. The overall success of unambiguous species-level identifications with help of three commonly used mitochondrial markers barely reached 70 % in unsupervised queries submitted to BOLD or GenBank. Pitfalls were mostly due to misidentified or mislabelled sequences available in public databases, to the presence of highly divergent cryptic lineages or to missing reference sequences for the rarest species (i.e., those that are in greatest need for conservation attention). Divergent cryptic lineages (over 5 % sequence divergence) found in Swiss mammals were either due to highly distinct intraspecific haplotypes or to the existence of an overlooked cryptic biological species (Muscardinus speciosus). To circumvent part of the observed pitfalls, we provide a curated and complete reference database for the wild mammals of Switzerland based on carefully identified, vouchered specimens. We finally acknowledge that the identification of naturally hybridizing or introgressed species remains a significant challenge that is often overlooked in massive, unsupervised DNA barcode analyses. Abstract

Reduced energy consumption and environmentally friendly, abundant constituents are gaining more attention for the synthesis of energy materials. A rapid, highly scalable, and process-temperature-sensitive solution synthesis route is demonstrated for the fabrication of thermoelectric Cu2-xSe. The process relies on readily available precursors and microwave-assisted thermolysis, which is sensitive to reaction conditions; yielding Cu1.8Se at 200 C and Cu2Se at 250 C within 6-8 min reaction time. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) revealed crystalline nature of as-made particles with irregular truncated morphology, which exhibit a high phase purity as identified by X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD) analysis. Temperature-dependent transport properties were characterized via electrical conductivity, Seebeck coefficient, and thermal diffusivity measurements. Subsequent to spark plasma sintering, pure Cu1.8Se exhibited highly compacted and oriented grains that were similar in size in comparison to Cu2Se, which led to its high electrical and low thermal conductivity, reaching a very high power-factor (24 µW/K-2cm-1). Density-of-states (DOS) calculations confirm the observed trends in electronic properties of the material, where Cu-deficient phase exhibits metallic character. The TE figure of merit (ZT) was estimated for the materials, demonstrating an unprecedentedly high ZT at 875 K of 2.1 for Cu1.8Se sample, followed by 1.9 for Cu2Se. Synthetic and processing methods presented in this work enable large-scale production of TE materials and components for niche applications. Versé autant dans les arts libéraux que dans les arts mécaniques, Spinoza fut aussi tailleur de verre à Amsterdam, sans doute acteur de théâtre, probablement dessinateur. Il fréquenta la boutique d'antiquaire de Franciscus Van den Enden et fut proche de la société des arts Nil volentibus arduum ; il habitait non loin de Rembrandt et Potter et appréciait la compagnie de peintres et de décorateurs. Élaborée au coeur du siècle d'or de la peinture hollandaise, cette philosophie a souvent inspiré les artistes. Comment expliquer un tel regard non philosophique sur une philosophie qui ne présente pas une pensée développée sur les arts ? Comment expliquer qu'on ait tenté d'emprunter les voies de l'esthétique pour pénétrer une philosophie qui ne constitue pas ce champ de réflexion en un domaine autonome ? A défaut d'avoir une esthétique à proprement dit, le spinozisme n'en contient pas moins une profonde réflexion sur les arts et leurs usages au sein d'un projet d'éthique conçue comme art de vivre.

Abstract

The necessity, the immanence and the antifinalism of substance are the instruments of a radical anthropological thought in Spinoza, where the theological anthropomorphism appears to be ruled by a finalist anthropocentrism. The theological reform goes together with a anthropological reform, which denounces three native illusions (belief in freedom, in a substantial self and in the power of a free will). In a positive way, man, defined by Spinoza as individuum is to be considered as the effect of a triple natural relation: to the substance, to the universe and to other men (multitudo). The desire, that is the very essence of man, is here conceived as a reaction to these three fundamental and modal relations.

Abstract

The article focuses on the emergence of the philosophy of Baruch de Spinoza in France. It traces the history of the reception of Spinoza's works by such philosophers as Pierre Bayle, Henri Bergson and Gilles Deleuze. It notes that prior to its French identity, Spinozism had first of all been German. It recalls that the 1990s have been the theater for a growing internationalization of Spinoza research.

Abstract

The article presents an examination of the popularity of the philosophy of the 17th century Dutch Jewish philosopher Baruch de Spinoza in the second half of the 20th century in France. It discusses the arrival of a French Spinozism during this period and examines how his thought remains relevant when exploring issues such as the behavior of totalitarian powers, the essence of democracy and the power of human populations. The article traces Spinozism in pre-war Germany, discusses its arrival in France and examines the relationship between Spinozism and the philosophy of French philosopher René Descartes and German philosopher Karl Marx.
