Protoplanetary discs, when externally irradiated by Far Ultraviolet (FUV) photons from OBA-type stars, lose material through photoevaporative winds, reducing the amount of material available to form planets. Understanding the link between environmental irradiation and observed disc properties requires accurately evaluating the FUV flux at star-hosting discs, which can be challenging due stellar parallax uncertainties. In this paper, we address this issue proposing a novel approach: using the local density distribution of a star-forming region (i.e. 2D pairwise star separations distribution) and assuming isotropy, we infer 3D separations between star-hosting discs and massive stars. We test this approach on synthetic clusters, showing that it significantly improves the accuracy compared to previous methods. We compute FUV fluxes for a large sample of star-bearing discs in 7 regions within 200 pc, 6 regions in Orion, and Serpens sub-regions, providing a publicly accessible catalogue. We find that discs in regions hosting late-type B and early-type A stars can reach non-negligible irradiation levels for disc evolution (10-100 G0). We investigate dust disc masses relative to FUV fluxes detecting hints of a negative correlation when restricting to average region ages. However, we emphasize the need for more stellar and disc measurements at >10^2 G0 to probe the dependence of disc properties on the environmental irradiation. Including average interstellar dust extinction, median FUV fluxes are not significantly attenuated, though this result may change if high-resolution 3D dust extinction maps were available. The method presented in this work is a powerful tool that can be expanded to additional regions.

A radiochemical method for the isolation of plutonium isotopes from environmental samples, based on the use of specific chromatography resins for actinides (TEVA, Eichrom Industries), has been set up in our laboratory and optimised for their posterior determination by alpha spectrometry (AS) or accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS). The proposed radiochemical method has replaced in our lab a well established one based on the use of a relatively un-specific anion-exchange resin (AG1X8, Biorad), because it is clearly less time consuming, reduces the amounts and molarities of acid wastes produced, and reproducibly gives high radiochemical yields. In order to check the reliability of the proposed radiochemical method for the determination of plutonium isotopes in different environmental matrixes, twin aliquots of a set of samples were prepared with TEVA and with AG 1X8 resins and measured by AS. Some samples prepared with TEVA resins were measured as well by AMS. We analyze various problems related to the physics of hadrons under extreme conditions of temperature and chemical potentials. On the one hand, we show that the thermal resonances $f_0(500)$ and $K_0^*(700)$, generated in the framework of Unitarized Chiral Perturbation Theory $\pi\pi$ and $K\pi$ scattering at finite temperature, play an essential role concerning chiral and $U(1)_A$ restoration. On the other hand, a low-energy effective Lagrangian has been constructed within ChPT at non-zero chemical potential, which we discuss here for an axial chemical potential., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures. We present a JWST MIRI/MRS spectrum of the inner disk of WISE J044634.16$-$262756.1B (hereafter J0446B), an old ($\sim$34 Myr) M4.5 star but with hints of ongoing accretion. The spectrum is molecule-rich and dominated by hydrocarbons. We detect 14 molecular species (H$_2$, CH$_3$, CH$_4$, C$_2$H$_2$, $^{13}$CCH$_2$, C$_2$H$_4$, C$_2$H$_6$, C$_3$H$_4$, C$_4$H$_2$, C$_6$H$_6$, HCN, HC$_3$N, CO$_2$ and $^{13}$CO$_2$) and 2 atomic lines ([Ne II] and [Ar II]), all observed for the first time in a disk at this age. The detection of spatially unresolved H$_2$ and Ne gas strongly supports that J0446B hosts a long-lived primordial disk, rather than a debris disk. The marginal H$_2$O detection and the high C$_2$H$_2$/CO$_2$ column density ratio indicate that the inner disk of J0446B has a very carbon-rich chemistry, with a gas-phase C/O ratio $\gtrsim$2, consistent with what have been found in most primordial disks around similarly low-mass stars. In the absence of significant outer disk dust substructures, inner disks are expected to first become water-rich due to the rapid inward drift of icy pebbles, and evolve into carbon-rich as outer disk gas flows inward on longer timescales. The faint millimeter emission in such low-mass star disks implies that they may have depleted their outer icy pebble reservoir early and already passed the water-rich phase. Models with pebble drift and volatile transport suggest that maintaining a carbon-rich chemistry for tens of Myr likely requires a slowly evolving disk with $\alpha-$viscosity $\lesssim10^{-4}$. The precursors of Herbig stars are called Intermediate Mass T Tauri (IMTT) stars, which have spectral types later than F, but stellar masses between 1.5 and 5 M_\odot, and will eventually become Herbig stars with spectral types of A and B. ALMA Band 6 and 7 archival data are obtained for 34 IMTT disks with continuum observations, 32 of which have at least 12CO, 13CO, or C18O observations although most of them at quite shallow integrations. The disk integrated flux together with a stellar luminosity scaled disk temperature are used to obtain a total disk dust mass by assuming optically thin emission. Using thermochemical Dust And LInes (DALI) models from previous work, we additionally obtain gas masses of 10/35 of the IMTT disks based on the CO isotopologues. The IMTT disks in this study have the same dust mass and radius distributions as Herbig disks. The dust mass of the IMTT disks is higher compared to that of the T Tauri disks, as is also found for the Herbig disks. No differences in dust mass are found for group I versus group II disks, in contrast to Herbig disks. The disks for which a gas mass could be determined show similar high mass disks as for the Herbig disks. Comparing the disk dust and gas mass distributions to the mass distribution of exoplanets shows that there also is not enough dust mass in disks around intermediate mass stars to form the massive exoplanets. On the other hand there is more than enough gas to form the atmospheres of exoplanets. We conclude that the sampled IMTT disk population is almost indistinguishable compared to Herbig disks, as their disk masses are the same, even though these are younger objects. Detecting planet signatures in protoplanetary disks is fundamental to understanding how and where planets form. In this work, we report dust and gas observational hints of planet formation in the disk around 2MASS-J16120668-301027, as part of the ALMA Large Program "AGE-PRO: ALMA survey of Gas Evolution in Protoplanetary disks". The disk was imaged with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) at Band 6 (1.3 mm) in dust continuum emission and four molecular lines: $^{12}$CO(J=2-1), $^{13}$CO(J=2-1), C$^{18}$O(J=2-1), and H$_2$CO(J=3$_{(3,0)}$-2$_{(2,0)}$). Resolved observations of the dust continuum emission (angular resolution of $\sim 150$ mas, 20 au) show a ring-like structure with a peak at $0.57 ^{\prime \prime}$ (75 au), a deep gap with a minimum at 0.24$^{\prime \prime}$ (31 au), an inner disk, a bridge connecting the inner disk and the outer ring, along with a spiral arm structure, and a tentative detection (to $3\sigma$) of a compact emission at the center of the disk gap, with an estimated dust mass of $\sim 2.7-12.9$ Lunar masses. We also detected a kinematic kink (not coincident with any dust substructure) through several $^{12}$CO channel maps (angular resolution $\sim$ 200 mas, 30 au), located at a radius of $\sim 0.875^{\prime \prime}$ (115.6 au). After modeling the $^{12}$CO velocity rotation around the protostar, we identified a tentative rotating-like structure at the kink location with a geometry similar to that of the disk. V892 Tau is a young binary star surrounded by a circumbinary disc which show hints of interaction with the low-mass nearby star V892 Tau NE. The goal of this paper is to constrain the orbit of V892 Tau NE and to determine the resulting circumbinary disc dynamics. We present new ALMA observations of the V892 Tau circumbinary disc at a twice higher angular and spectral resolution. We model the data with V892 Tau as a triple system and perform a grid of hydrodynamical simulations testing several orbits of the companion. The simulation outputs are then post-processed to build synthetic maps that we compare to the observations. The 12CO emission of the disc shows clear non-Keplerian features such as spiral arms. When comparing the data with our synthetic observations, we interpret these features as ongoing interactions with the companion. Our simulations indicate that an eccentricity of 0.5 of the companion is needed to reproduce the observed disc extent and that a mutual inclination of approximately 60{\deg} with the inner binary reproduces the measured disc tilt. In order to explain most of the features of the circumbinary disc, we propose that V892 Tau NE follows a misaligned eccentric orbit, with an eccentricity between 0.2 and 0.5 and a mutual inclination between 30{\deg} and 60{\deg}. Such a misaligned companion suggests the disc is oscillating and precessing with time, stabilising in an intermediate plane with a non-zero mutual inclination with the inner binary. (Abridged) The presence of short-period (< 10 days) planets around main sequence (MS) stars has been associated either with the dust-destruction region or with the magnetospheric gas-truncation radius in the protoplanetary disks that surround them during the pre-MS phase. However, previous analyses have only considered low-mass FGK stars, making it difficult to disentangle the two scenarios. This exploratory study is aimed at testing whether it is the inner dust or gas disk driving the location of short-period, giant planets. By combining TESS and Gaia DR3 data, we identified a sample of 47 intermediate-mass (1.5-3 M$_{\odot}$) MS stars hosting confirmed and firm candidate hot Jupiters. We compared their orbits with the rough position of the inner dust and gas disks, which are well separated around their Herbig stars precursors. We also made a comparison with the orbits of confirmed hot Jupiters around a similarly extracted TESS/Gaia sample of low-mass sources (0.5-1.5 M$_{\odot}$). Our results suggest that the inner gas (and not the dust) disk limits the innermost orbits of hot Jupiters around intermediate-mass stars. These findings also provide tentative support to previous works that have claimed this is indeed the case for low-mass sources. We propose that hot Jupiters could be explained via a combination of the core-accretion paradigm and migration up to the gas-truncation radius, which may be responsible for halting inward migration regardless of the stellar mass regime. Larger samples of intermediate-mass stars with hot Jupiters are necessary to confirm our hypothesis, which implies that massive Herbig stars without magnetospheres (> 3-4 M$_{\odot}$) may be the most efficient in swallowing their newborn planets., Comment: Letter accepted in Astronomy & Astrophysics. 9 figures, 1 table, 3 appendixes

Chance-aligned sources or blended companions can cause false positives in planetary transit detections or simply bias the determination of the candidate properties. In the era of high-precision space-based photometers, the need for high-spatial resolution images has demonstrated to be critical for validating and confirming transit signals. This already applied to the Kepler mission, it is now applicable to the TESS survey and will be critical for PLATO. We present the results of the AstraLux-TESS survey, a catalog of high-spatial resolution images obtained with the AstraLux instrument (Calar Alto) in the context of the TESS Follow-up Observing Program. We use the lucky-imaging technique to obtain high-spatial resolution images from planet candidate hosts included mostly in two relevant regimes: exoplanet candidates belonging to the level-one requirement of the TESS mission (planets with radii $R<4~R_{\oplus}$), and candidates around intermediate-mass stars. Among the 185 planet host candidate stars observed, we found 13 (7%) to be accompanied by additional sources within 2.2 arcsec separation. Among them, six are not associated to sources in the Gaia DR3 catalog, thus contaminating the TESS light curve. We provide upper limits and probabilities to the possible existence of field contaminants through the sensitivity limits of our images. Among the isolated hosts, we can discard hazardous companions (bright enough to mimic a planetary transit signals) for all their planets. The results from this catalog are key for the statistical validation of small planets (prime targets of the TESS mission) and planets around intermediate-mass stars in the main-sequence. These two populations of planets are hard to confirm with the radial velocity technique. Substructures in disc density are ubiquitous in the bright extended discs that are observed with high resolution. These substructures are intimately linked to the physical mechanisms driving planet formation and disc evolution. Surveys of star-forming regions find that most discs are in fact compact, less luminous, and do not exhibit these same substructures. It remains unclear whether compact discs also have similar substructures or if they are featureless. This suggests that different planet formation and disc evolution mechanisms operate in these discs. We investigated evidence of substructure within two compact discs around the stars Sz 65 and Sz 66 using high angular resolution observations with ALMA at 1.3 mm. The two stars form a wide-binary system with 6.36 arcsec separation. The continuum observations achieve a synthesised beam major axis of 0.026 arcsec, equivalent to about 4.0 au, enabling a search for substructure on these spatial scales and a characterisation of the gas and dust disc sizes with high precision. We analysed the data in the image plane through an analysis of reconstructed images, as well as in the uv plane by modelling the visibilities and by an analysis of the 12CO emission line. Comparisons were made with high-resolution observations of compact discs and radially extended discs. We find evidence of substructure in the dust distribution of Sz 65, namely a shallow gap centred at approximately 20 au, with an emission ring exterior to it. Ninety percent of the measured continuum flux is found within 27 au, and the distance for 12CO is 142 au. The observations show that Sz 66 is very compact: 90 per cent of the continuum flux is contained within 16 au, and 48 au for the gas. While the overall prevalence and diversity of substructure in compact discs relative to larger discs is yet to be determined, we find evidence that substructures can exist in compact discs.

We review recent work regarding the role of light scalar resonances at finite temperature for chiral symmetry and $U(1)_A$ restoration. In order to understand galaxy growth evolution, it is critical to constrain the evolution of its building block: gas. Mostly comprised by Hydrogen in its neutral (HI) and molecular (H2) phases, the latter is the one mostly directly associated to star-formation, while the neutral phase is considered the long-term gas reservoir. In this work, we make use of an empirical relation between dust emission at millimeter wavelengths and total gas mass in the inter-stellar medium (M_HI plus M_H2) in order to retrieve the HI content in galaxies. We assemble an heterogeneous sample of 335 galaxies at 0.011E10.5M_sun significantly decreased since 8-12Gyr ago. The specific sample used for this analysis is associated to 20-50% of the total cosmic HI content as estimated via Damped Lyman-alpha Absorbers. In IR luminous galaxies, HI mass content decreases between z~2.5 and z~1.5, while H2 seems to increase. We calculate the pion scattering amplitude at nonzero temperature and nonzero $\mu_5$, the chemical potential associated to chiral imbalance in a locally $P$-breaking scenario. The amplitude is calculated up to next to leading order in Chiral Perturbation Theory and is unitarized with the Inverse Amplitude Method to generate the poles of the $f_0(500)$ and $\rho (770)$ resonances. Within the saturation approach, the thermal $f_0(500)$ pole allows to determine $T_c(\mu_5)$, the transition temperature for chiral symmetry restoration. Our results confirm the growing behaviour of $T_c(\mu_5)$ found in previous works and, through a fit to lattice results, we improve the uncertainty range of the low-energy constants associated to $\mu_5$ corrections in the chiral lagrangian. The results for the $\rho (770)$ pole are compatible with previous works regarding the dilepton yield in heavy-ion collisions., Comment: 15 pages, 8 figures

Be stars make up almost 20% of the B star population, and are rapidly rotating stars surrounded by a disc; however the origin of this rotation remains unclear. Mass transfer within close binaries provides the leading hypothesis, with previous detections of stripped companions to Be stars supporting this. Here, we exploit the exquisite astrometric precision of Gaia to carry out the largest to date comparative study into the binarity of matched samples of nearby B and Be stars from the Bright Star Catalogue. By utilising new "proper motion anomaly" values, derived from Gaia DR2 and DR3 astrometric data alongside previous values calculated using Hipparcos and Gaia data, and the Gaia provided RUWE, we demonstrate that we can identify unresolved binaries down to separations of 0.02". Using these measures, we find that the binary fractions of B and Be stars are similar between 0.04 - 10", but the Be binary fraction is significantly lower than that of the B stars for separations below 0.04". As the separation range of these "missing" binaries is too large for mass transfer, and stripped companions are not retrieved by these measures, we suggest the companions migrate inwards via binary hardening within a triple system. This confirms statistically for the first time the hypothesis that binary interaction causes the Be phenomenon, with migration causing the dearth of Be binaries between 0.02 - 0.04". We have selected 337 intermediate and high-mass YSOs ($1.5$ to $20$ M$_{\odot}$) well-characterised with spectroscopy. By means of the clustering algorithm HDBSCAN, we study their clustering and association properties in the Gaia DR3 catalogue as a function of stellar mass. We find that the lower mass YSOs ($1.5-4$ M$_{\odot}$) have clustering rates of $55-60\%$ in Gaia astrometric space, a percentage similar to the one found in the T Tauri regime. However, intermediate-mass YSOs in the range $4-10$ M$_{\odot}$ show a decreasing clustering rate with stellar mass, down to $27\%$. We find tentative evidence suggesting that massive YSOs ($>10$ M$_{\odot}$) often appear $-$yet not always$-$ clustered. We put forward the idea that most massive YSOs form via a mechanism that demands many low-mass stars around them. However, intermediate-mass YSOs form in a classical core-collapse T Tauri way, yet they do not appear often in the clusters around massive YSOs. We also find that intermediate and high-mass YSOs become less clustered with decreasing disk emission and accretion rate. This points towards an evolution with time. For those sources that appear clustered, no major correlation is found between their stellar properties and the cluster sizes, number of cluster members, cluster densities, or distance to cluster centres. In doing this analysis, we report the identification of 55 new clusters. The accretion of material from protoplanetary disks onto their central stars is a fundamental process in the evolution of these systems and a key diagnostic in constraining the disk lifetime. We analyze the relationship between the stellar accretion rate and the disk mass in 32 intermediate-mass Herbig Ae/Be systems and compare them to their lower-mass counterparts, T Tauri stars. We find that the $\dot{M}$--$M_{\rm{disk}}$ relationship for Herbig Ae/Be stars is largely flat at $\sim$10$^{-7}$ M$_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$ across over three orders of magnitude in dust mass. While most of the sample follows the T Tauri trend, a subset of objects with high accretion rates and low dust masses are identified. These outliers (12 out of 32 sources) have an inferred disk lifetime of less than 0.01 Myr and are dominated by objects with low infrared excess. This outlier sample is likely identified in part by the bias in classifying Herbig Ae/Be stars, which requires evidence of accretion that can only be reliably measured above a rate of $\sim$10$^{-9}$ M$_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$ for these spectral types. If the disk masses are not underestimated and the accretion rates are not overestimated, this implies that these disks may be on the verge of dispersal, which may be due to efficient radial drift of material or outer disk depletion by photoevaporation and/or truncation by companions. The spatial distribution and evolution of gas in the inner 10 au of protoplanetary disks form the basis for estimating the initial conditions of planet formation. Among the most important constraints derived from spectroscopic observations of the inner disk are the radial distributions of the major gas phase constituents, how the properties of the gas change with inner disk dust evolution, and how chemical abundances and excitation conditions are influenced by the high-energy radiation from the central star. We present a survey of the radial distribution, excitation, and evolution of inner disk molecular hydrogen (H$_{2}$) obtained as part of the $HST$/ULLYSES program. We analyze far-ultraviolet spectroscopy of 71 (63 accreting) pre-main sequence systems in the ULLYSES DR5 release to characterize the H$_{2}$ emission lines, H$_{2}$ dissociation continuum emission, and major photochemical/disk evolution driving UV emissions (Ly$\alpha$, UV continuum, and C IV). We use the widths of the H$_{2}$ emission lines to show that most fluorescent H$_{2}$ arises between 0.1 - 1.4 au from the parent star, and show positive correlations of the average emitting radius with the accretion luminosity and with the dust disk mass. We find a strong correlation between H$_{2}$ dissociation emission and both the accretion-dominated Ly$\alpha$ luminosity and the inner disk dust clearing, painting a picture where water molecules in the inner 3 au are exposed to and dissociated by strong Ly$\alpha$ emission as the opacity of the inner disk declines with time., Comment: 19 pages, 11 figures. We present an ACA search for [CI] emission at 492GHz toward large T Tauri disks (gas radii $\gtrsim 200$au) in the $\sim 1-3$Myr-old Lupus star-forming region. Combined with ALMA 12-m archival data for IM Lup, we report [CI] detections in 6 out of 10 sources, thus doubling the known detections toward T Tauri disks. We also identify four Keplerian double-peaked profiles and demonstrate that [CI] fluxes correlate with $^{13}$CO, C$^{18}$O, and $^{12}$CO(2-1) fluxes, as well as with the gas disk outer radius measured from the latter transition. These findings are in line with the expectation that atomic carbon traces the disk surface. In addition, we compare the carbon and CO line luminosities of the Lupus and literature sample with [CI] detections with predictions from the self-consistent disk thermo-chemical models of Ruaud et al. (2022). These models adopt ISM carbon and oxygen elemental abundances as input parameters. With the exception of the disk around Sz 98, we find that these models reproduce all available line luminosities and upper limits with gas masses comparable to or higher than the minimum mass solar nebula and gas-to-dust mass ratios $\geq 10$. Thus, we conclude that the majority of large Myr-old disks conform to the simple expectation that they are not significantly depleted in gas, CO, or carbon., Comment: AAS Journals in press

We perform a complete calculation of the pion-kaon scattering amplitude in Chiral Perturbation Theory at finite temperature, paying particular attention to the analytic structure of the amplitude and the main differences with respect to the zero temperature case. We also extend the Inverse Amplitude Method at finite temperature for unequal-mass scattering processes, which allows us to unitarize the amplitude and obtain the thermal evolution of the $K_0^*(700)$ and $K^*(892)$ pole parameters. As a direct application of our analysis, we show that the thermal evolution of the $K_0^*(700)$ resonance is crucial to explain the behavior of the scalar susceptibility for isospin $I=1/2$, which in turn, is directly connected with chiral and $U(1)_A$ restoration properties of the QCD phase diagram., Comment: 23 pages, 11 figures, published in JHEP

T Tauri stars produce broad Lyman-alpha emission lines that contribute $\sim$88% of the total UV flux incident on the inner circumstellar disks. Lyman-alpha photons are generated at the accretion shocks and in the protostellar chromospheres and must travel through accretion flows, winds and jets, the protoplanetary disks, and the interstellar medium before reaching the observer. This trajectory produces asymmetric, double-peaked features that carry kinematic and opacity signatures of the disk environments. To understand the link between the evolution of Lyman-alpha emission lines and the disks themselves, we model HST-COS spectra from targets included in Data Release 3 of the Hubble UV Legacy Library of Young Stars as Essential Standards (ULLYSES) program. We find that resonant scattering in a simple spherical expanding shell is able to reproduce the high velocity emission line wings, providing estimates of the average velocities within the bulk intervening H I. The model velocities are significantly correlated with the K band veiling, indicating a turnover from Lyman-alpha profiles absorbed by outflowing winds to emission lines suppressed by accretion flows as the hot inner disk is depleted. Just 30% of targets in our sample have profiles with red-shifted absorption from accretion flows, many of which have resolved dust gaps. At this stage, Lyman-alpha photons may no longer intersect with disk winds along the path to the observer. Our results point to a significant evolution of Lyman-alpha irradiation within the gas disks over time, which may lead to chemical differences that are observable with ALMA and JWST., Comment: accepted to ApJ

(Abridged) The stellar metallicity, [M/H], may have important implications for planet formation. In particular, Kama et al. proposed that the deficit of refractory elements in the surfaces of some Herbig Ae/Be stars (HAeBes) may be linked to the presence of disk cavities likely caused by Jovian planets that trap the metal-rich content. This work aims to provide a robust test on the previous proposal by analyzing the largest sample of HAeBes with homogeneously derived [M/H] values, stellar, and circumstellar properties. [M/H] values of 67 HAeBes were derived based on observed spectra and Kurucz synthetic models. Statistical analyses were carried out aiming to test the potential relation between [M/H] and the group I sources from the spectral energy distribution (SED) classification by Meeus et al., associated to the presence of cavities potentially carved by giant planets. Our study robustly confirms that group I sources tend to have a lower [M/H] than that of group II HAeBes. A similar analysis involving SED-based transitional disks does not reveal such a relation, indicating that not all processes capable of creating dust holes have an effect on the stellar abundances. We also show that the observed [M/H] differences are not driven by environmental effects. Finally, group I sources tend to have stronger (sub-) mm continuum emission presumably related to the presence of giant planets. Indeed, literature results indicate that disk substructures probably associated to their presence are up to ten times more frequent in group I HAeBes. We provide indirect evidences suggesting that giant planets are more frequent around group I/low [M/H] stars than around the rest of the HAeBes. Intermediate mass stars (IMSs) represent the link between low-mass and high-mass stars and cover a key mass range for giant planet formation. In this paper, we present a spectroscopic survey of 241 young IMS candidates with IR-excess, the most complete unbiased sample to date within 300 pc. We combined VLT/X-Shooter spectra with BVR photometric observations and Gaia DR3 distances to estimate fundamental stellar parameters such as Teff, mass, radius, age, and luminosity. We further selected those stars within the intermediate mass range 1.5 <= Mstar/Msun <= 3.5 and discarded old contaminants. We used 2MASS and WISE photometry to study the IR-excesses of the sample, finding 92 previously unidentified stars with IR-excess. We classified this sample into 'protoplanetary', 'hybrid candidates' and 'debris' discs based on their observed fractional excess at 12microns, finding a new population of 17 hybrid disc candidates. We studied inner disc dispersal timescales for {\lambda} < 10{\mu}m and found very different trends for IMSs and low mass stars (LMSs). IMSs show excesses dropping fast during the first 6 Myrs independently of the wavelength, while LMSs show consistently lower fractions of excess at the shortest wavelengths and increasingly higher fractions for longer wavelengths, with slower dispersal rates. In conclusion, this study demonstrates empirically that IMSs dissipate their inner discs very differently than LMSs, providing a possible explanation for the lack of short period planets around IMSs., Comment: 19 pages, 11 figures, Accepted to MNRAS

WEAVE, the new wide-field, massively multiplexed spectroscopic survey facility for the William Herschel Telescope, will see first light in late 2022. WEAVE comprises a new 2-degree field-of-view prime-focus corrector system, a nearly 1000-multiplex fibre positioner, 20 individually deployable 'mini' integral field units (IFUs), and a single large IFU. These fibre systems feed a dual-beam spectrograph covering the wavelength range 366$-$959\,nm at $R\sim5000$, or two shorter ranges at $R\sim20\,000$. After summarising the design and implementation of WEAVE and its data systems, we present the organisation, science drivers and design of a five- to seven-year programme of eight individual surveys to: (i) study our Galaxy's origins by completing Gaia's phase-space information, providing metallicities to its limiting magnitude for $\sim$3 million stars and detailed abundances for $\sim1.5$ million brighter field and open-cluster stars; (ii) survey $\sim0.4$ million Galactic-plane OBA stars, young stellar objects and nearby gas to understand the evolution of young stars and their environments; (iii) perform an extensive spectral survey of white dwarfs; (iv) survey $\sim400$ neutral-hydrogen-selected galaxies with the IFUs; (v) study properties and kinematics of stellar populations and ionised gas in $z<0.5$ cluster galaxies; (vi) survey stellar populations and kinematics in $\sim25\,000$ field galaxies at $0.3\lesssim z \lesssim 0.7$; (vii) study the cosmic evolution of accretion and star formation using $>1$ million spectra of LOFAR-selected radio sources; (viii) trace structures using intergalactic/circumgalactic gas at $z>2$. This paper presents the first census of Galactic post-Asymptotic Giant Branch stars in the HR diagram. We combined Gaia DR3 parallax-based distances with extinction corrected integrated fluxes, and derived luminosities for a sample of 185 stars that had been proposed to be post-AGB stars in the literature. The luminosities allow us to create an HR diagram containing the largest number of post-AGB candidate objects to date. A significant fraction of the objects fall outside the typical luminosity range as covered by theoretical evolutionary post-AGB tracks as well as observed for Planetary Nebula central stars. These include massive evolved supergiants and lower luminosity objects. Here we highlight the fact that one third of the post-AGB candidates is underluminous and we identify these with the recently recognised class of post-Red Giant Branch objects thought to be the result of binary evolution., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS Letters on July 31st, 2022. (Abridged) The lifetime of protoplanetary disks around young stars limits the timescale when planets form. A disk dissipation timescale < 10 Myr was inferred from surveys providing the fraction of stars with disks in young stellar clusters with different ages. However, most previous surveys focused on the compact region within ~ 2 pc from the clusters' centers, for which the disk fraction information considering the outer part is practically absent. We aim to test if disk fraction estimates change when inferred from an extended region around the clusters' centers. Gaia EDR3 data and a best-suited, Virtual Observatory (VO)-based tool -Clusterix-, are used to identify member stars for a representative sample of 19 young clusters considering two concentric fields of view (FOV) with radii ~ 20 pc and ~ 2 pc. Our analysis reveals that the inner disk fractions inferred from the compact and the extended regions are equal within ~ 10%, which does not support a previous hypothesis proposing that disk fractions should be significantly larger considering extended regions. A list of member and disk stars in each cluster is provided and stored in a VO-compliant archive. Averaged values and plots characterizing the whole clusters are also provided, including HR diagrams based on Gaia colors and absolute magnitudes. Our results cover the largest fields ever probed when dealing with disk fractions for all clusters analysed, and imply that their complete characterization requires the use of wide FOVs. The resulting database is a benchmark for future detailed studies of young clusters, whose disk fractions must be accurately determined by using multi-wavelength analysis potentially combined with data from coming Gaia releases., Comment: Accepted in Astronomy & Astrophysics. 3 Appendixes. We revisit the most general effective lagrangian within Chiral Perturbation Theory at nonzero isospin chemical potential. In addition to the contributions already considered in the literature, we discuss the effects of new terms allowed by the symmetries, derived within the external source method including spurion fields, as well as of linear-field corrections. We study the influence of those new contributions on the energy density at zero temperature and observables derived from it, such as the pion and quark condensates and the isospin density. Corrections are shown to be compatible with lattice results, which favor a nonzero value for the only undetermined low-energy constant (LEC) to leading order ${\cal O}(p^2)$, rendering in particular a shift of the critical value for Bose-Einstein condensation. To ${\cal O}(p^4)$ we study the physical constraints on the new LEC, which renormalize the energy density and whose numerical effect is estimated within natural values. The new ${\cal O}(p^4)$ corrections give rise to more significant deviations than those previously considered and remain compatible with lattice results., Comment: 19 pages, 9 figures

This work outlines and assesses several methods for the detection of manoeuvres in Low Earth Orbit (LEO) from surveillance radar data. To be able to detect manoeuvres, the main starting assumption is that the object under analysis has an orbit known with a sufficient degree of precision. Based on the precise (a posteriori) orbit and radar data, several manoeuvre detection methods are presented; one is based on unscented Kalman filtering, whereas two others algorithms are based on reachability analysis of the state, which correlates its prediction set with the next track from the radar. The filtering algorithm can be extended for several radar tracks, whereas the reachability-based methods are more precise in detecting manoeuvres. Then, to inherit the best properties of both classes of algorithms, a manoeuvre detection filter that combines both concepts is finally presented. Manoeuvre detection results are presented first for simulated scenarios -- for validation and calibration purposes -- and later for real data. Radar information comes from the Spanish Space Surveillance Radar (S3TSR), with real manoeuvre information and high-quality ephemerides. The results show promise, taking into account that a single surveillance radar is the only source of data, obtaining manoeuvre detection rates of more than 50% and false positive rates of less than 10%., Comment: Preprint submitted to Advances in Space Research

We review recent work on thermal resonances and their connection with chiral symmetry and $U(1)_A$ restoration within the QCD phase diagram. In particular, the $f_0(500)$ and $K_0^* (700)$ states generated from $\pi\pi$ and $\pi K$ scattering within Unitarized Chiral Perturbation Theory (ChPT) at finite temperature allow one to describe scalar susceptibilities, which combined with Ward Identities yield interesting conclusions regarding the interplay between chiral and $U(1)_A$ restoration, key to understand the nature of the transition, Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures, contribution to the proceedings of the 19th International Conference on Hadron Spectroscopy and Structure (HADRON 2021). We present optical spectroscopy observations of 145 high-mass pre-main sequence candidates from the catalogue of Vioque et al. (2020). From these, we provide evidence for the Herbig nature of 128 sources. This increases the number of known objects of the class by $\sim50\%$. We determine the stellar parameters of these sources using the spectra and Gaia EDR3 data. The new sources are well distributed in mass and age, with 23 sources between $4$-$8$ M$_{\odot}$ and 32 sources above $8$ M$_{\odot}$. Accretion rates are inferred from H$\alpha$ and H$\beta$ luminosities for 104 of the new Herbigs. These accretion rates, combined with previous similar estimates, allow us to analyze the accretion properties of Herbig stars using the largest sample ever considered. We provide further support to the existence of a break in accretion properties at $\sim3$-$4$ M$_{\odot}$, which was already reported for the previously known Herbig stars. We re-estimate the potential break in accretion properties to be at $3.87^{+0.38}_{-0.96}$ M$_{\odot}$. As observed for the previously known Herbig stars, the sample of new Herbig stars independently suggests intense inner-disk photoevaporation for sources with masses above $\sim7$ M$_{\odot}$. These observations provide robust observational support to the accuracy of the Vioque et al. (2020) catalogue of Herbig candidates., Comment: Published in The Astrophysical Journal.
