We present an analysis of the ionospheric electric field dynamics at high latitudes during periods of quiet and disturbed geomagnetic activity by exploiting recent advancements in dynamical systems and extreme value theory. Specifically, we employed two key indicators: the instantaneous dimension d, which evaluates the degrees of freedom within the system, and the extremal index θ, which quantifies the system’s persistence in a given state. Electric field measurements were obtained from the CSES-01 satellite at mid- and high latitudes in the Southern Hemisphere. Our analysis revealed that the instantaneous dimension increases upon crossing specific ionospheric regions corresponding to the auroral oval boundaries. Outside these regions, the instantaneous dimension fluctuates around the state-space dimension, suggesting an ergodic nature of the system. As geomagnetic activity intensifies, differences in the properties of various ionospheric regions persist, albeit with an increased system instability characterized by higher θ values, thus indicating the externally driven nature of the electric field response to geomagnetic activity. This study provides new insights into the spatial and temporal variability of electric field fluctuations in the ionosphere, highlighting the complex interplay between geomagnetic conditions and ionospheric dynamics.

High-latitude ionospheric plasma constitutes a very complex environment, which is characterized by turbulent dynamics in the presence of different ion species. The turbulent plasma motion produces statistical features of both electromagnetic and velocity fields, which have been broadly studied over the years. In this work, we use electric field high-resolution observations provided by the China-Seismo Electromagnetic Satellite-01 in order to investigate the properties of plasma turbulence within the Earth’s polar cap. We adopt a model of turbulence in which the fluctuations of the electric field are assimilated to a stochastic process evolving throughout the scales, and we show that such a process (i) satisfies the Markov condition (ii) can be modeled as a continuous diffusion process. These observations enable us to use a Fokker–Planck equation to model the changes in the statistics of turbulent fluctuations throughout the scales. In this context, we discuss the advantages and limitations of the proposed approach in modeling plasma electric field fluctuations.

Scale-invariance has rapidly established itself as one of the most used concepts in space plasmas to uncover underlying physical mechanisms via the scaling-law behavior of the statistical properties of field fluctuations. In this work, we characterize the scaling properties of the magnetic field fluctuations in a sub-alfvénic region in contrast with those of the nearby super-alfvénic zone during the ninth Parker Solar Probe perihelion. With our observations, (i) evidence of an extended self-similarity (ESS) for both the inertial and the sub-ion/kinetic regimes during both solar wind intervals is provided, (ii) a multifractal nature of field fluctuations is observed across inertial scales for both solar wind intervals, and (iii) a mono-fractal structure of the small-scale dynamics is reported. The main novelty is that a universal character is found at the sub-ion/kinetic scale, where a unique rescaling exponent describes the high-order statistics of fluctuations during both wind intervals. Conversely, a multitude of scaling symmetries is observed at the inertial scale with a similar fractal topology and geometrical structures between the magnetic field components in the ecliptic plane and perpendicular to it, in contrast with a different level of intermittency, more pronounced during the super-alfvénic interval rather than the sub-alfvénic one, along the perpendicular direction to the ecliptic plane. The above features are interpreted in terms of the possible underlying heating and/or acceleration mechanisms in the solar corona resulting from turbulence and current sheet formation.

The recent Chinese Seismo-Electromagnetic Satellite (CSES-01) provides a good opportunity to investigate some features of plasma properties and its motion in the topside ionosphere. Using simultaneous measurements from the electric field detector and the magnetometers onboard CSES-01, we investigate some properties of the plasma E × B drift velocity for a case study during a crossing of the Southern auroral region in the topside ionosphere. In detail, we analyze the spectral and scaling features of the plasma drift velocity and provide evidence of the turbulent character of the E × B drift. Our results provide an evidence of the occurrence of 2D E × B intermittent convective turbulence for the plasma motion in the topside ionospheric F2 auroral region at scales from tens of meters to tens of kilometers. The intermittent character of the observed turbulence suggests that the macro-scale intermittent structure is isomorphic with a quasi-1D fractal structure, as happens, for example, in the case of a filamentary or thin-tube-like structure. Furthermore, in the analyzed range of scales we found that both magnetohydrodynamic and kinetic processes may affect the plasma dynamics at spatial scales below 2 km. The results are discussed and compared with previous results reported in the literature.

In the polar ionosphere, the electric field is characterized by broadband and power law spectral densities at small/short spatio-temporal scales, which support a possible turbulent nature of the electric field fluctuations. Here, we investigate the multifractal character of the full three-dimensional electric field in the polar ionosphere as recorded on board the first Chinese Seismo-Electromagnetic Satellite (CSES-01). The results of our analysis prove a clear different degree of multifractality of the electric field fluctuations approaching either the polar cap trailing edge or the auroral region. The observed differences in the multifractal character are interpreted in terms of the different natures of the particle precipitation in the polar cap and in the auroral region. A possible link between the multifractal nature of electric field fluctuations, parallel to the geomagnetic field, and filamentation of field aligned currents (FACs) is established.

The interplanetary medium variability has been extensively studied by means of different approaches showing the existence of a wide variety of dynamical features, such as self-similarity, self-organization, turbulence and intermittency, and so on. Recently, by means of Parker solar probe measurements, it has been found that solar wind magnetic field fluctuations in the inertial range show a clear transition near 0.4 AU, both in terms of spectral features and multifractal properties. This breakdown of the scaling features has been interpreted as the evidence of a dynamical phase transition. Here, by using the Klimontovich S-theorem, we investigate how the process of self-organization is under way through the inner heliosphere, going deeper into the characterization of this dynamical phase transition by measuring the evolution of entropic-based measures through the inner heliosphere.

The interaction between the solar wind and the Earth’s magnetosphere−ionosphere system is very complex, being essentially the result of the interplay between an external driver, the solar wind, and internal processes to the magnetosphere−ionosphere system. In this framework, modelling the Earth’s magnetosphere−ionosphere response to the changes of the solar wind conditions requires a correct identification of the causality relations between the different parameters/quantities used to monitor this coupling. Nowadays, in the framework of complex dynamical systems, both linear statistical tools and Granger causality models drastically fail to detect causal relationships between time series. Conversely, information theory-based concepts can provide powerful model-free statistical quantities capable of disentangling the complex nature of the causal relationships. In this work, we discuss how to deal with the problem of measuring causal information in the solar wind−magnetosphere−ionosphere system. We show that a time delay of about 30−60 min is found between solar wind and magnetospheric and ionospheric overall dynamics as monitored by geomagnetic indices, with a great information transfer observed between the z component of the interplanetary magnetic field and geomagnetic indices, while a lower transfer is found when other solar wind parameters are considered. This suggests that the best candidate for modelling the geomagnetic response to solar wind changes is the interplanetary magnetic field component B z . A discussion of the relevance of our results in the framework of Space Weather is also provided.

In a recent paper, Consolini et al. investigated the statistics of geometrical invariants of the coarse-grained gradient tensor of plasma velocity for a case study of space plasma turbulence. They showed how, at spatial scales near the proton inertial length, there is evidence for the occurrence of dissipation structures along the Vieillefosse’s tail. Here, we extend the previous analysis to the statistics of the geometrical invariants of the magnetic field coarse-grained gradient tensor, computed using magnetic field measurements by the ESA-Cluster mission in the solar wind region. In detail, we investigate the evolution of the joint probability distribution functions of the magnetic geometrical invariants at different scales in the inertial range of turbulent solar wind. The results show a clear dependence of the joint statistics of geometrical invariants on the distance from the proton inertial length scale in the inertial range, which seems to be compatible with a variation of the dimensionality of the fluctuation field from two dimensions to three dimensions at the smallest scales. Evidence of an increasing role of the ingoing spiral saddle and current-associated dissipation structures is found at the smallest investigated scales, where dissipation can occur.
