National debit networks are finally making some headway largely through the efforts of Visa USA Inc and MasterCard International Inc. Visa's Interlink network has already generated commitments to issue some 65 million debit cards for about 350 banks, while MasterCard's Maestro network looks forward to issuing about 10 million cards for over 300 financial institutions. Both networks still operate mostly at the regional level, but they are expected to process transactions throughout the country or at least across regions by the end of 1992. The new national debit networks, however, would have to face strong competition from the newly formed Electronic Payment Services (EPS) and Transaction Processing Inc. EPS is reportedly capable of processing 650 million credit and debit transactions annually.
