Abstract Background The development of the zebrafish visual system is significantly influenced by exposure to monochromatic light, yet investigations into its effects during juvenile stages are lacking. This study evaluated the impacts of varying intensities and durations of red and blue monochromatic light on the visual system and dopamine pathways in juvenile zebrafish. Methods Juvenile zebrafish were exposed to red (650 nm) and blue (440 nm, 460 nm) monochromatic lights over four days at intensities ranging from 500 to 10,000 lx, for durations of 6, 10, and 14 h daily. A control group was maintained under standard laboratory conditions. Post-exposure assessments included the optokinetic response (OKR), retinal structural analysis, ocular dopamine levels, and the expression of genes related to dopamine pathways (Th, Dat, and Mao). Results (1) OKR enhancement was observed with increased 440 nm light intensity, while 460 nm and 650 nm light exposures showed initial improvements followed by declines at higher intensities. (2) Retinal thinning in the outer nuclear layer was observed under the most intense (10,000 lx for 14 h) light conditions in the 440 nm and 650 nm groups, while the 460 nm group remained unaffected. (3) Dopamine levels increased with higher intensities in the 440 nm group, whereas the 460 nm group exhibited initial increases followed by decreases. The 650 nm group displayed similar trends but were statistically insignificant compared to the control group. (4) Th expression increased with light intensity in the 440 nm group. Dat showed a rising and then declining pattern, and Mao expression significantly decreased. The 460 nm group exhibited similar patterns for Th and Dat to the behavioral observations, but an inverse pattern for Mao. The 650 nm group presented significant fluctuations in Th and Dat expressions, with pronounced variations in Mao. Conclusions Specific red and blue monochromatic light conditions promote visual system development in juvenile zebrafish. However, exceeding these optimal conditions may impair visual function, highlighting the critical role of dopamine pathway in modulating light-induced effects on the visual system.

PurposeCerebral Visual Impairment (CVI) is the leading cause of pediatric visual impairment. Given the diversity of clinical presentations of CVI, we are interested in whether questionnaires appropriately target the spectrum CVI cases, specifically the Teach-CVI Screening Tool. Rasch analysis is a standard psychometric technique for assessing the targeting of questionnaire items, however this analysis technique has not yet been applied to this questionnaire.MethodsWe performed a retrospective review of clinical CVI cases from the NECO Center for Eye Care at Perkins School for the Blind from January 2016 to December 2022. Electronic medical records were reviewed to identify patients with an ICD-9 or ICD-10 code of CVI or other neurological visual impairment. Age, gender, diagnoses, visual acuity, contrast sensitivity, visual fields, ocular alignment, and Teach-CVI responses were collected. We applied the method of successive dichotomizations, a polytomous Rasch model, to estimate item measures and person measures from the survey. Targeting of questionnaire items to the sample population was explored by comparing estimated item measures to person measures. Multiple linear regression was used to determine which factors influence patient visual ability (i.e., Teach-CVI person measure).Results119 patient records were included, 54% of which were male. The mean age was 8.9 years (SD = 6.12) with a range of 0 to 33 years of age. Mean visual acuity was 0.46 logMAR (SD = 0.40), or 20/57. The majority of patients in the sample had a co-occurring visual disorder in addition to CVI (84%), the most frequent being strabismus (69.9%) or visual field loss (25.3%). Item measures ranged from -2.67 to 1.77 logits (SD = 0.76), with a mean of 0 logit by convention. Estimated person measures ranged from -2.19 to 3.08 logits (SD = 1.10) with a mean of -0.03 logit. The range of item measures covered 93.3% of the person measures, and all person measures, except one, were within one logit of an item measure. Visual measures were not statistically significantly associated with Teach-CVI person measures.ConclusionThe findings from this study suggest that the Teach-CVI survey is well targeted and an appropriate patient reported outcome measure for CVI.

Its key redox signaling molecule in oxidative stress and exerts toxicity on a wide range of organisms. Thus, to understand whether oxidative stress alters visual development, zebrafish embryos were exposed to H2O2 at concentration of 0.02 to 62.5 mM for 7 days. Eye to body length ratio (EBR) and apoptosis in retina at 48 hpf, and optomotor response (OMR) at 7 dpf were all measured. To investigate whether hydrogen peroxide-induced effects were mediated by oxidative stress, embryos were co-incubated with the antioxidant, glutathione (GSH) at 50 μM. Results revealed that concentrations of H2O2 at or above 0.1 mM induced developmental toxicity, leading to increased mortality and hatching delay. Furthermore, exposure to 0.1 mM H2O2 decreased EBR at 48 hpf and impaired OMR visual behavior at 7 dpf. Additionally, exposure increased the area of apoptotic cells in the retina at 48 hpf. The addition of GSH reversed the effects of H2O2, suggesting the involvement of oxidative stress. H2O2 decreased the expression of eye development-related genes, pax6α and pax6β. The expression of apoptosis-related genes, tp53, casp3 and bax, significantly increased, while bcl2α expression decreased. Antioxidant-related genes sod1, cat and gpx1a showed decreased expression. Expression levels of estrogen receptors (ERs) (esr1, esr2α, and esr2β) and ovarian and brain aromatase genes (cyp19a1a and cyp19a1b, respectively) were also significantly reduced. Interestingly, co-incubation of GSH effectivity reversed the impact of H2O2 on most parameters. Overall, these results demonstrate that H2O2 induces adverse effects on visual development via oxidative stress, which leads to alter apoptosis, diminished antioxidant defenses and reduced estrogen production.

Visual acuity measurement is important for the detection and monitoring of eye disorders. Developing accurate and sensitive visual acuity tests suitable for young children is therefore desirable. Recognition or form visual acuity (VA), which is measured with matching in children aged 3 years and up, is more sensitive for detecting visual deficits compared to resolution VA. The Waterloo Differential Acuity Test (WatDAT) is a proposed recognition VA test using the concept of identifying the "odd one out" among distractors. The WatDAT is expected to be cognitively easier than matching tests and therefore may be used in younger children. The purpose of this study is to investigate the testability of the WatDAT paradigm in children aged 12–36 months, and to determine the optimum format and number of distractors. Fifty-one typically-developing children aged 12–36 months participated in the study. Data for Patti Pics (PP) and Face targets (FT) were collected for formats with 3, 4 and 5 distractors. The targets were presented binocularly on a computer touch screen at 30 cm. The task was to touch the face among identical non-faces or a house among circles. Following initial training, there were 5 presentations for each distractor format. Testability was defined as correctly identifying at least 4/5 presentations and was also determined for uncrowded PP symbols using matching. Of participants aged 18–36 months, 87% could perform the WatDAT PP targets with 3 distractors compared to 68% for the FT, while 48% could perform matching with PP. The testability for FT increased to 85% for children ≥22 months. Younger children showed lower testability. For the 3 distractor format, PP targets gave 9% testability in children 12 to <18 months, and FT gave a testability of 16% in children 12 to <22 months. WatDAT testability is higher than matching VA tests. This indicates that the newly developed WatDAT has potential for measuring recognition VA in children 18 months and older. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Infant studies have suggested that the detection of biological motion (BM) might be an innate capacity, based on newborns' spontaneous preference for BM. However, it is unclear if, like adults, infants recognize humans from BM and are able to build the representation of bodies and faces. To address this issue, we tested whether exposure to BM influences subsequent face recognition in 3- to 8-month-old infants. After familiarization with a point-light walker (PLW) of either a female or a male, the infant's preference for female and male faces was measured. If infants can build the representation of not only the body but also the face from PLWs, the familiarization effect of gender induced by the PLW might be generalized to faces. We found that infants at 7 to 8 months looked for longer at the face whose gender was opposite to that of the PLW, whereas 3- to 4- and 5- to 6-month-old infants did not. These results suggest that infants can access the representation of humans from BM and extract gender, which is shared across bodies and faces, from at least 7 to 8 months of age. We examined development of 5- and 10.5-month-old infants' face representations, focusing on infants' discrimination and categorization of female and male faces. We tested for gender-based preferences and categorization of female and male faces by presenting infants with pairs of faces and then habituating them to a series of majority female or male face ensembles. We then tested for gender preferences with new face pairs (one female and one male; Study 1) or new face ensembles (majority female and majority male; Study 2). We found that both 5- and 10.5-month-old infants discriminated female from male faces in face pairs, and both age groups looked more at female faces during habituation. Neither age group, however, provided evidence of gender-based categorization. We interpret these findings within a theoretical framework that stresses environmental exposure to different social categories, and infants' ability to detect commonalities of features within categories. We conclude that infants' gender-based categorization of faces is constrained by the set of features available in the input.

Background: The visual system is not fully mature at birth and continues to develop throughout infancy until it reaches adult levels through late childhood and adolescence. Disruption of vision during this postnatal period and prior to visual maturation results in deficits of visual processing and in turn may affect the development of complementary senses. Studying people who have had one eye surgically removed during early postnatal development is a useful model for understanding timelines of sensory development and the role of binocularity in visual system maturation. Adaptive auditory and audiovisual plasticity following the loss of one eye early in life has been observed for both low-and high-level visual stimuli. Notably, people who have had one eye removed early in life perceive the McGurk effect much less than binocular controls. Methods: The current study investigates whether multisensory compensatory mechanisms are also present in people who had one eye removed late in life, after postnatal visual system maturation, by measuring whether they perceive the McGurk effect compared to binocular controls and people who have had one eye removed early in life. Results: People who had one eye removed late in life perceived the McGurk effect similar to binocular viewing controls, unlike those who had one eye removed early in life. Conclusion: This suggests differences in multisensory compensatory mechanisms based on age at surgical eye removal. This research delves into the creative graphic processes of architecture and concept art, a stage of visual development in world-creating industries such as video games and animation. The authors relate pre-production strategies such as conceptual drawings, colour scripts or thumbnail sketches with study drawings, sequential drawings or serial visions that define the experience and architectural narrative. The suitable coherence between the visual strategies to explore the idea and the communicative purpose could be useful in architectural design as considering experiential and emotional perception. Purpose: To compare the discrimination performance of 6‐year‐old children for optotypes from six paediatric visual acuity tests and to fit Luce's Biased Choice Model to the data to estimate the relative similarities and bias for each optotype. Methods: Full data sets were collected from 20 typically developing 6‐year‐olds who had passed a vision screening. They were presented with single optotypes labelled 6/12 at a distance of 9 m and were asked to identify the optotype using a matching task containing all optotypes from the relevant test. The data were combined to form a confusion matrix for each test and a biased choice model was fitted to the data. Results: Median correct performance varied from 40% to 100% across optotypes, with the HOTV test having the highest values. Estimates of the similarity of each pair of optotypes indicated equal values for all pairs in the Landolt C, HOTV, Lea numbers and Tumbling E tests. The values differed for the picture tests, that is Lea Symbols and Allen figures. The estimates of bias for each individual optotype also indicated different values with the picture tests. Conclusions: Previous studies of the threshold acuity of young children and adults have indicated differences in acuity estimates across paediatric tests. A recognition acuity task typically requires resolving the difference information between optotypes. The performance of the 6‐year‐olds here reveals variance in similarity and bias values for picture tests, particularly for the Allen figures when compared with the Lea Symbols. Ideally, this analysis should be performed when designing new tests, and these results motivate progression from the use of current picture tests to well calibrated letter or number tests at the earliest possible age. Visual perception plays a crucial role in foraging, avoiding predators, mate selection, and communication. The regulation of color vision is largely dependent on opsin, which is the first step in the formation of the visual transduction cascade in photoreceptor cells. Short-wave-sensitive 1 (sws1) is a visual pigment that mediates short-wavelength light transduction in vertebrates. The depletion of sws1 resulted in increased M-opsin in mice. However, there is still no report on the visual function of sws1 in teleost fish. Here, we constructed the sws1 knockout medaka using CRISPR/Cas9 technology. The 6 dph (days post-hatching) medaka sws1−/− larvae exhibited significantly decreased food intake and total length at the first feeding stage, and the mRNA levels of orexigenic genes (npy and agrp) were significantly upregulated after feeding. The swimming speed was significantly reduced during the period of dark-light transition stimulation in the sws1-mutant larvae. Histological analysis showed that the thickness of the lens was reduced, whereas the thickness of the ganglion cell layer (GCL) was significantly increased in sws1−/− medaka larvae. Additionally, the deletion of sws1 decreased the mRNA levels of genes involved in phototransduction (gnb3b, grk7a, grk7b, and pde6c). We also observed increased retinal cell apoptosis and oxidative stress in sws1 knockout medaka larvae. Collectively, these results suggest that sws1 deficiency in medaka larvae may impair visual function and cause retinal cell apoptosis, which is associated with the downregulation of photoconduction expression and oxidative stress. Purpose: Individuals with different types of intermittent exotropia (IXT) may use neurally coupled accommodation and vergence responses differently from those without exotropia to achieve eye alignment. This study examined the relationship between simultaneously recorded accommodation and vergence responses in children and young adults with a range of types of IXT while aligned and deviated. Methods: Responses of 29 participants with IXT (4–31 years) and 24 age‐matched controls were recorded using simultaneous eye‐tracking and eccentric photorefraction while they watched a movie in binocular or monocular viewing at varying viewing distances. Gradient response AC/A ratios and fusional vergence ranges were also assessed. Eight participants had divergence or pseudo‐divergence excess type IXT, 5 had convergence insufficiency and 16 had basic IXT. Results: Control and IXT participants accommodated similarly both in monocular and binocular‐aligned conditions to visual targets at 80 and 33 cm. When deviated in binocular viewing, most participants with IXT exhibited changes in accommodation <0.5D relative to alignment. Gradient response AC/A ratios were similar for control [0.56 MA/D (IQR: 0.51 MA/D)] and IXT participants [0.42 MA/D (0.54 MA/D); p = 0.60]. IXT participants showed larger vergence to accommodation ratios with changes from distance to near fixation [1.19 MA/D (1.45 MA/D)] than control participants [0.78 MA/D (0.60 MA/D); p = 0.02], especially among IXT participants with divergence or pseudo‐divergence excess. Participants with IXT exhibited typical fusional divergence ranges beyond their dissociated position [8.86 Δ (7.10 Δ)] and typical fusional convergence ranges from alignment [18 Δ (15.75 Δ)]. Conclusions: This study suggests that control of IXT is typically neither driven by accommodative convergence alone nor associated with over‐accommodation secondary to fusional convergence efforts. These simultaneous measurements confirmed that proximal vergence contributed significantly to IXT control, particularly for divergence or pseudo‐divergence excess type IXT. Purpose: To assess the effectiveness of combined use of stereoscopic 3D video movies and part-time patching in treating older amblyopic children with poor response or compliance to traditional patching treatments and comparing this combined treatment with patching alone. Methods: Thirty-two children aged 5–12 years with amblyopia associated with anisometropia, strabismus, or both were recruited in a randomized clinical trial. Eligible participants were assigned randomly to the combined and patching groups. Here, binocular treatment refers to using the Bangerter filter to blur the fellow eye and subsequently watching a close-up 3D movie with large parallax. The primary outcome was amblyopic eye (AE) best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) improvement at six weeks. In addition, secondary outcomes included BCVA of AE improvement at three weeks and change of stereoacuity. Results: Of 32 participants, mean (SD) age was 6.63 (1.46) years, and 19 (59%) were female. At 6 weeks, mean (SD) amblyopic eye VA improved by 0.17 ± 0.08 logMAR (2-sided 95% CI, 0.13 to 0.22; F = 57.2, p < 0.01) and 0.05 ± 0.04 logMAR (2-sided 95% CI, 0.05 to 0.09; F = 8.73, p = 0.01) in the combined and patching groups, respectively. The difference was statistically significant (mean difference, 0.13 logMAR [1.3 line]; 95% CI, 0.08–0.17 logMAR [0.8–1.7 lines]; t25 = 5.65, p < 0.01). After treatment, only the combined group had significantly improved stereoacuity, such as binocular function score (median [interquartile range], 2.30 [2.23 to 2.68] vs. 1.69 [1.60 to 2.30] log arcsec; paired, z = –3.53, p < 0.01), and mean stereoacuity gain was 0.47 log arcsec (± 0.22). Changes in other types of stereoacuity were similar. Conclusion: Our laboratory-based binocular treatment strategy engaged a high level of compliance that led to a substantial gain in visual function after a short period of treatment for older amblyopic children having poor response or compliance to traditional patching treatments. Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) is a novel mandatory constituent of breast-milk-substitute infant formula in Europe. The aim of the present narrative review was to summarize available data in connection with the background of the novel European mandatory dietary recommendation to add at least 20 mg/100 kcal (4.8 mg/100 kJ) DHA to infant formula. The literature search with the expression "docosahexaenoic acid with (infant or human milk or formula)" revealed nearly 2000 papers, including more than 400 randomized controlled trials (RCTs). DHA is a persistent constituent of human milk (HM) with a worldwide mean level of 0.37% (standard deviation: 0.11%) of all fatty acids in HM. RCTs on supplementing DHA to lactating women showed some indications, though no direct evidence of the beneficial effect of enhanced HM DHA on the development of breastfed infants. The most-recent Cochrane review of RCTs investigating the effect of DHA supplementation to infant formula for full-term infants reported no evidence for recommending supplementation. The controversy between the Cochrane view and the actual recommendation may be related to the numerous hurdles in organizing high-quality studies in this field. Every year millions of children are exposed to general anesthesia while undergoing surgical and diagnostic procedures. In the field of ophthalmology, 44,000 children are exposed to general anesthesia annually for strabismus surgery alone. While it is clear that general anesthesia is necessary for sedation and pain minimization during surgical procedures, the possibility of neurotoxic impairments from its exposure is of concern. In animals there is strong evidence linking early anesthesia exposure to abnormal neural development. but in humans the effects of anesthesia are debated. In humans many aspects of vision develop within the first year of life, making the visual system vulnerable to early adverse experiences and potentially vulnerable to early exposure to general anesthesia. We attempt to address whether the visual system is affected by early postnatal exposure to general anesthesia. We first summarize key mechanisms that could account for the neurotoxic effects of general anesthesia on the developing brain and review existing literature on the effects of early anesthesia exposure on the visual system in both animals and humans and on neurocognitive development in humans. Finally, we conclude by proposing future directions for research that could address unanswered questions regarding the impact of general anesthesia on visual development. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Nearly all modern life depends on artificial light; however, it does cause health problems. With certain restrictions of artificial light emitting technology, the influence of the light spectrum is inevitable. The most remarkable problem is its overload in the short wavelength component. Short wavelength artificial light has a wide range of influences from ocular development to mental problems. The visual neuronal pathway, as the primary light-sensing structure, may contain the fundamental mechanism of all light-induced abnormalities. However, how the artificial light spectrum shapes the visual neuronal pathway during development in mammals is poorly understood. We placed C57BL/6 mice in three different spectrum environments (full-spectrum white light: 400–750 nm; violet light: 400 ± 20 nm; green light: 510 ± 20 nm) beginning at eye opening, with a fixed light time of 7:00–19:00. During development, we assessed the ocular axial dimension, visual function and retinal neurons. After two weeks under short wavelength conditions, the ocular axial length (AL), anterior chamber depth (ACD) and length of lens thickness, real vitreous chamber depth and retinal thickness (LLVR) were shorter, visual acuity (VA) decreased, and retinal electrical activity was impaired. The density of S-cones in the dorsal and ventral retinas both decreased after one week under short wavelength conditions. In the ventral retina, it increased after three weeks. Retinal ganglion cell (RGC) density and axon thickness were not influenced; however, the axonal terminals in the lateral geniculate nucleus (LGN) were less clustered and sparse. Amacrine cells (ACs) were significantly more activated. Green light has few effects. The KEGG and GO enrichment analyses showed that many genes related to neural circuitry, synaptic formation and neurotransmitter function were differentially expressed in the short wavelength light group. In conclusion, exposure to short wavelength artificial light in the early stage of vision-dependent development in mice delayed the development of the visual pathway. With the steady progress of intelligent mine construction and the acceleration of the implementation of digital transformation of coal enterprises, the demand for digital business applications of coal mine users is growing exponentially. This puts forward higher requirements for the efficiency of business application development. The traditional development model of application systems in the coal industry relies excessively on professional manufacturers. It has problems, such as long implementation cycles, high implementation costs and low resource reuse rates. It is difficult to meet the management requirements of coal mine users for rapid development of business applications. To solve the above problems, a design scheme of intelligent mine low code industrial IoT platform using the 'model driven' development mode is proposed. Based on microservices technology, the platform architecture including the data acquisition layer, data processing layer, data storage layer, data release layer, human-computer interaction and application layer is designed. The operation platform at each level resolves the corresponding functions of the development platform configuration through a resolution engine. By designing data encoding and master data specifications, platform internal data interaction specifications, platform interfaces and services, a unified technical system has been established. The unified supervision of various IoT monitoring objects on coal mine operation sites is achieved. By developing a low code component toolbox, a series of common functions and business logic that originally needed to be customized and developed in various monitoring system software for coal mines are uniformly encapsulated. It forms directly reusable components that can adapt to different types of monitoring system applications in coal mines. This provides users with a visual development environment for intelligent mining application software development by dragging and dropping components and configuring parameters. The application results indicate that this platform can provide a rapid development platform for coal mine monitoring systems, meeting the daily needs of coal mine users for emergency customized task development.

The developing visual thalamus and cortex extract positional information encoded in the correlated activity of retinal ganglion cells by synaptic plasticity, allowing for the refinement of connectivity. Here, we use a biophysical model of the visual thalamus during the initial visual circuit refinement period to explore the role of synaptic and circuit properties in the regulation of such neural correlations. We find that the NMDA receptor dominance, combined with weak recurrent excitation and inhibition characteristic of this age, prevents the emergence of spike-correlations between thalamocortical neurons on the millisecond timescale. Such precise correlations, which would emerge due to the broad, unrefined connections from the retina to the thalamus, reduce the spatial information contained by thalamic spikes, and therefore we term them ‘parasitic’ correlations. Our results suggest that developing synapses and circuits evolved mechanisms to compensate for such detrimental parasitic correlations arising from the unrefined and immature circuit.

This study presents a design method for cultural heritage digitization using ancient Egyptian theological totems. The use of digital technology and multimedia in cultural heritage research has become an important means of cultural heritage inheritance, innovation, and dissemination with the deepening of the digital age. Ancient Egyptian theological totems were selected because their digitization is rarely discussed, although ancient Egypt has left very rich cultural heritage resources in various fields such as architecture, painting, music, and theology. The detailed digitization process was explained in three main dimensions: visual development, animation processing, and interactive design. Methods and design experiences were then summarized for each part. The study emphasizes that digital technology, as the most advanced technical means, plays a pivotal role in the inheritance, innovation, and dissemination of cultural heritage.

Life motion, the active movements of people and other animals, contains a wealth of information that is potentially accessible to the visual system of an observer. Biological-motion point-light displays have been widely used to study both the information contained in life motion stimuli and the visual mechanisms that make use of it. Biological motion conveys motion-mediated dynamic shape, which in turn can be used for identification and recognition of the agent, but it also contains local visual invariants that humans and other animals use as a general detection system that signals the presence of other agents in the visual environment. Here, we review recent research on behavioral, neurophysiological, and genetic aspects of this life-detection system and discuss its functional significance in the light of earlier hypotheses. Deprivation of one sense can be followed by enhanced development of other senses via cross-modal plasticity mechanisms. To study the effect of whisker tactile deprivation on vision during the early stages of development, we clipped the bilateral whiskers of young mice and found that their vision was impaired but later recovered to normal levels. Our results demonstrate that inhibition of the PI3K/AKT/ERK signaling pathway caused short-term visual impairment during early development, while high expression levels of Crystallin Alpha A (CRYAA) and Gap Junction Protein Alpha 8 (GJA8) in the retina led to the recovery of developmental visual acuity. Interestingly, analysis of single-cell sequencing results from human embryonic retinas at 9–19 gestational weeks (GW) revealed that CRYAA and GJA8 display stage-specific peak expression during human embryonic retinal development, suggesting potential functions in visual development. Our data show that high expression levels of CRYAA and GJA8 in the retina after whisker deprivation rescue impaired visual development, which may provide a foundation for further research on the mechanisms of cross-modal plasticity and in particular, offer new insights into the mechanisms underlying tactile-visual cross-modal development.

It has been suggested that perceiving blurry images in addition to sharp images contributes to the development of robust human visual processing. To computationally investigate the effect of exposure to blurry images, we trained convolutional neural networks (CNNs) on ImageNet object recognition with a variety of combinations of sharp and blurred images. In agreement with recent reports, mixed training on blurred and sharp images (B+S training) brings CNNs closer to humans with respect to robust object recognition against a change in image blur. B+S training also slightly reduces the texture bias of CNNs in recognition of shape-texture cue conflict images, but the effect is not strong enough to achieve human-level shape bias. Other tests also suggest that B+S training cannot produce robust human-like object recognition based on global configuration features. Using representational similarity analysis and zero-shot transfer learning, we also show that B+S-Net does not facilitate blur-robust object recognition through separate specialized sub-networks, one network for sharp images and another for blurry images, but through a single network analyzing image features common across sharp and blurry images. However, blur training alone does not automatically create a mechanism like the human brain in which sub-band information is integrated into a common representation. Our analysis suggests that experience with blurred images may help the human brain recognize objects in blurred images, but that alone does not lead to robust, human-like object recognition.

Adult observers are sensitive to the configuration of facial features within a face, able to distinguish between relative differences in feature spacing, and detecting deviations from typical facial appearance. How does the representation of the typical configuration of facial features develop? While there is a great deal of work describing children's developing abilities to detect differences in feature spacing across face images, there is substantially less work examining what children think constitutes a typical arrangement of facial features. In the current study, we investigated this issue using a production task in which adults and 5- to 10-year-old children created a face "portrait" by arranging the eyes, nose, and mouth of a standard face within an empty outline. Using this simple task, we found differences in face configuration across age groups, such that children of all ages made far larger errors than adult participants, expanding facial features outward from the center of the face more than adults. These results were not affected by face inversion, potentially implying a domain-general rather than face-specific process. We also found that children of all ages endorsed the correct configuration as a best likeness in a perceptual task. We discuss these results in terms of ongoing debate regarding the extent to which configural processing is a meaningful component of face recognition and the conclusions we can draw from production paradigms as compared to purely perceptual tasks. The trisomy of chromosome 21, the smallest autosome, is associated with significant systemic manifestations in addition to intellectual disability. The triplication of this chromosome, known as Down syndrome (DS) is also associated with several manifestations in the eye, and ocular adnexae. People with DS have a variety of ophthalmic conditions, some of which require intervention. The variable systemic and ophthalmic presentations in DS can make the delivery of eye care challenging. We highlight common ophthalmic presentations in people with DS, as well as the practical implications of delivering eye examinations for this complex needs population. As neuroscience and rehabilitative techniques advance, age-old questions concerning the visual experience of those who gain sight after blindness, once thought to be philosophical alone, take center stage and become the target for scientific inquiries. In this study, we employ a battery of visual perception tasks to study the unique experience of a small group of children who have undergone vision-restoring cataract removal surgery as part of the Himalayan Cataract Project. We tested their abilities to perceive in three dimensions (3D) using a binocular rivalry task and the Brock string task, perceive visual illusions, use cross-modal mappings between touch and vision, and spatially group based on geometric cues. Some of the children in this study gained a sense of sight for the first time in their lives, having been born with bilateral congenital cataracts, while others suffered late-onset blindness in one eye alone. This study simultaneously supports yet raises further questions concerning Hubel and Wiesel’s critical periods theory and provides additional insight into Molyneux’s problem, the ability to correlate vision with touch quickly. We suggest that our findings present a relatively unexplored intermediate stage of 3D vision development. Importantly, we spotlight some essential geometrical perception visual abilities that strengthen the idea that spontaneous geometry intuitions arise independently from visual experience (and education), thus replicating and extending previous studies. We incorporate a new model, not previously explored, of testing children with congenital cataract removal surgeries who perform the task via vision. In contrast, previous work has explored these abilities in the congenitally blind via touch. Taken together, our findings provide insight into the development of what is commonly known as the visual system in the visually deprived and highlight the need to further empirically explore an amodal, task-based interpretation of specializations in the development and structure of the brain. Moreover, we propose a novel objective method, based on a simple binocular rivalry task and the Brock string task, for determining congenital (early) vs. late blindness where medical history and records are partial or lacking (e.g., as is often the case in cataract removal cases).

Perinatal hypoxic-ischemic damage is the most frequent cause of CVI but CVI can also be the result of a genetic disorder. The majority of children with CVI have cerebral palsy and/or developmental delay. Early diagnosis is crucial; however, there is a need for consensus on evidence based diagnostic tools and referral criteria. The aim of this study is to develop guidelines for diagnosis and referral in CVI according to the grade method. Patients and Methods: We developed the guidelines according to the GRADE method 5 searches on CVI (children, developmental age = 18 years) were performed in the databases Medline, Embase, and Psychinfo, each with a distinct topic. Results: Based on evidence articles were selected on five topics: 1. Medical history and CVI-questionnaires 23 (out of 1,007). 2. Ophthalmological and orthoptic assessment 37 (out of 816). 3. Neuropsychological assessment 5 (out of 716). 4. Neuroradiological evaluation and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) 9 (out of 723). 5. Genetic assessment 5 (out of 458). Conclusion: In medical history taking, prematurity low birth weight and APGAR (Appearance, Pulse, Grimace, Activity, Respiration) Scores (<5) are important. Different questionnaires are advised for children under the age of 3 years, older children and for specific risk groups (extremely preterm). In ophthalmological examination, eye movements, specially saccades, accommodation, crowding, contrast sensitivity and visual fields should be evaluated. OCT can show objective signs of trans-synaptic degeneration and abnormalities in fixation and saccades can be measured with eye tracking. Screening of visual perceptive functioning is recommended and can be directive for further assessment. MRI findings in CVI in Cerebral Palsy can be structured in five groups: Brain maldevelopment, white and gray matter lesions, postnatal lesions and a normal MRI. In children with CVI and periventricular leukomalacia, brain lesion severity correlates with visual function impairment. A differentiation can be made between cortical and subcortical damage and related visual function impairment. There is a need for a straightforward, accessible and accurate pediatric test for color vision deficiency (CVD). We present and evaluate ColourSpot, a self-administered, gamified and color calibrated tablet-based app, which diagnoses CVD from age 4. Children tap colored targets with saturations that are altered adaptively along the three dichromatic confusion lines. Two cohorts (Total, N = 772; Discovery, N = 236; Validation, N = 536) of 4–7-year-old boys were screened using the Ishihara test for Unlettered Persons and the Neitz Test of Color Vision. ColourSpot was evaluated by testing any child who made an error on the Ishihara Unlettered test alongside a randomly selected control group who made no errors. Psychometric functions were fit to the data and "threshold ratios" were calculated as the ratio of tritan to protan or deutan thresholds. Based on the threshold ratios derived using an optimal fitting procedure that best categorized children in the discovery cohort, ColourSpot showed a sensitivity of 1.00 and a specificity of 0.97 for classifying CVD against the Ishihara Unlettered in the independent validation cohort. ColourSpot was also able to categorize individuals with ambiguous results on the Ishihara Unlettered. Compared to the Ishihara Unlettered, the Neitz Test generated an unacceptably high level of false positives. ColourSpot is an accurate test for CVD, which could be used by anyone to diagnose CVD in children from the start of their education. Key messages: Visual acuity is the most used method to assess visual function in children. Contrast sensitivity complements the information provided for visual acuity, but it is not commonly used in clinical practice. Digital devices are increasingly used as a method to evaluate visual function, due to multiple advantages. Testing with these devices can improve the evaluation of visual development in children from a few months of age. Visual acuity and contrast sensitivity tests, using eye tracking technology, are able to measure visual function in children across a wide range of ages, objectively, quickly and without need of an experienced examiner. Purpose: To report age-normative values for grating visual acuity and contrast sensitivity in healthy children using a digital device with eye tracking technology and to validate the grating acuity test. Methods: In the first project of the study, we examined healthy children aged between 6 months and 7 years with normal ophthalmological assessment. Grating visual acuity (VA) and contrast sensitivity (CS) were assessed using a preferential gaze paradigm with a DIVE (Device for an Integral Visual Examination) assisted with eye tracking technology to provide age norms. For the validation project, we compared LEA grating test (LGT) with DIVE VA in a group of children aged between 6 months and 4 years with normal and abnormal visual development. Results: Fifty-seven children (2.86 ± 1.55 years) were examined with DIVE VA test and 44 successfully completed DIVE CS test (3.06 ± 1.41 years). Both, VA and CS values increased with age, mainly along the first two years of life. Sixty-nine patients (1.34 ± 0.61 years) were included in the DIVE VA test validation. The mean difference between LGT and DIVE VA was − 1.05 ± 4.54 cpd with 95% limits of agreement (LoA) of − 9.95–7.84 cpd. Agreement between the two tests was higher in children younger than 1 year with a mean difference of − 0.19 ± 4.02 cpd. Conclusions: DIVE is an automatic, objective and reliable tool to assess several visual function parameters in children, and it has good agreement with classical VA tests, especially for the first stage of life. As visual perception development proceeds rapidly after birth, early detection of developmental maturity is required. Healthy infants do not have many opportunities for visual perception evaluation, so a reliable evaluation method is necessary. This retrospective study included 276 healthy full-term infants <24 months of age using the Preverbal Visual Assessment (PreViAs) questionnaire, which measures scores of subdivided age-groups for the global scores and 4 domains: visual attention (VA), visual communication (VC), visual-motor coordination (VMC), and visual processing (VP). Through this study, reference values and cutoff scores of the PreViAs questionnaire were presented, reliability was secured, and potential influencing factors of the PreViAs scores were analyzed. Using Cronbach's α coefficient, the global scores were 0.938, 0.781 for VA, 0.660 for VC, 0.874 for VMC, and 0.942 for VP. The internal consistency of the questionnaire was high in the global scores and 3 domains (VA, VMC, and VP). In infants under 12 months, the global scores and the VA, VMC, and VP domains showed positive association with gestational age, whereas the VC domain correlated with sex: which was found to be greater for females (p < 0.05). In those 12 month and above, no clinical factors were significantly associated with the PreViAs scores in all domains. The PreViAs questionnaire is a useful tool for visual assessment of healthy full-term infants under 24 months of age, suggesting reference values and cutoff scores according to age, and estimating the maturation age for visual perception development of each domain. Everyday face recognition presents a difficult challenge because faces vary naturally in appearance as a result of changes in lighting, expression, viewing angle, and hairstyle. We know little about how humans develop the ability to learn faces despite natural facial variability. In the current study, we provide the first examination of attentional mechanisms underlying adults' and infants' learning of naturally varying faces. Adults (n = 48) and 6- to 12-month-old infants (n = 48) viewed videos of models reading a storybook; the facial appearance of these models was either high or low in variability. Participants then viewed the learned face paired with a novel face. Infants showed adultlike prioritization of face over nonface regions; both age groups fixated the face region more in the high- than low-variability condition. Overall, however, infants showed less ability to resist contextual distractions during learning, which potentially contributed to their lack of discrimination between the learned and novel faces. Following was evaluated using smooth pursuit movement, where grade 1 indicated no movement, grade 2 partial movement, and grade 3 complete movement. Two ophthalmologists independently applied the grading method in all patients. Then one of two examiners repeated the examinations to investigate the intra-observer agreement of the grading system.Results: Intra-observer agreement was excellent (Kappa coefficient = 0.823) and inter-observer agreement was good (Kappa coefficient = 0.625). All patients who exhibited abnormal ocular movement had score discrepancy between a new fix-and-following grading examination.Conclusions: The new fix-and-follow grading scale can be applied easily in preverbal children in an office setting, and it proved reliable and reproducible. Observers experience complex patterns of visual motion in daily life due to their own movements through space, the movement of objects, and the geometry of surfaces in the visible world. Motion information shapes behavior and brain activity beginning in infancy. And yet most prior behavioral research has focused on how children process only one type, linear motion, leaving largely unexplored how children respond to radial or rotational motion patterns that co-occur with linear motion in everyday visual experience. This study examined how children and adults detect linear and radial motion patterns corrupted by a range of noise levels. Five to eight-year-old children (n = 25, 16 females; 76% White, 4% Asian, 16% more than one, 4% unknown) and young adults (n = 29, 15 females; 83.33% White, 16.67% Asian) viewed pairs of radial and linear motion displays mixed with random noise at one of two speeds (2 deg/s or 8 deg/s). Participants selected the display with coherent motion. Children and adults showed higher accuracy (percent correct) to radial versus linear motion patterns. Children had higher accuracy to the faster speed, while adults showed the opposite pattern. Adults showed better performance than children in all conditions. Exploratory analyses showed that male children had higher accuracy than their female peers. We conclude that motion processing develops in childhood with separable developmental trajectories for the processing of slow and fast visual motion, and that while further investigation is warranted, sex differences in motion processing found in young and older adults may begin in middle childhood. Intracortical inhibition plays a critical role in shaping activity patterns in the mature cortex. However, little is known about the structure of inhibition in early development prior to the onset of sensory experience, a time when spontaneous activity exhibits long-range correlations predictive of mature functional networks. Here, using calcium imaging of GABAergic neurons in the ferret visual cortex, we show that spontaneous activity in inhibitory neurons is already highly organized into distributed modular networks before visual experience. Inhibitory neurons exhibit spatially modular activity with long-range correlations and precise local organization that is in quantitative agreement with excitatory networks. Furthermore, excitatory and inhibitory networks are strongly co-aligned at both millimeter and cellular scales. These results demonstrate a remarkable degree of organization in inhibitory networks early in the developing cortex, providing support for computational models of self-organizing networks and suggesting a mechanism for the emergence of distributed functional networks during development.

Astrocytes regulate the formation and function of neuronal synapses via multiple signals; however, what controls regional and temporal expression of these signals during development is unknown. We determined the expression profile of astrocyte synapse-regulating genes in the developing mouse visual cortex, identifying astrocyte signals that show differential temporal and layer-enriched expression. These patterns are not intrinsic to astrocytes, but regulated by visually evoked neuronal activity, as they are absent in mice lacking glutamate release from thalamocortical terminals. Consequently, synapses remain immature. Expression of synapse-regulating genes and synaptic development is also altered when astrocyte signaling is blunted by diminishing calcium release from astrocyte stores. Single-nucleus RNA sequencing identified groups of astrocytic genes regulated by neuronal and astrocyte activity, and a cassette of genes that show layer-specific enrichment. Thus, the development of cortical circuits requires coordinated signaling between astrocytes and neurons, highlighting astrocytes as a target to manipulate in neurodevelopmental disorders.
